This wonderful 13-mile circular walk is fully signposted and offers a fascinating journey through Sidmouth’s captivating history and landscapes. Created by Sidmouth Town Council and the Sid Vale Association, it was launched during the 2019 Sidmouth Walking Festival. The route follows existing footpaths around the town, taking you through the picturesque villages of Sidbury and Salcombe Regis, and showcasing around 30 of the region’s most cherished landmarks.

Sidmouth’s main beach is a breathtaking expanse of sand and shingle, set against the iconic red cliffs that create an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Clean, easily accessible, and full of character, this beach is ideal for those who want to unwind by the sea or discover the fascinating history beneath their feet.

At low tide, the famous red sand is revealed, along with a series of rock pools teeming with marine life—perfect for curious explorers of all ages. For those who prefer a more leisurely seaside experience, deckchairs are available for hire throughout the summer, allowing you to soak up the sun in comfort.
For the adventurous, the western end of the esplanade offers paddleboard and kayak rentals, available throughout the summer months. This is a fantastic way to see the Jurassic Coast from the water, gliding along the dramatic cliffs and hidden coves. Boating is also popular, with a slipway at the eastern end of the promenade providing easy access to the sea. Small fishing boats often dot the horizon as they set out for the day’s catch.
While there is no lifeguard present, an inshore rescue service is on hand, and the beach is generally considered a safe spot for swimming, bathing, and water sports.

At the western end of Sidmouth’s seafront, Jacob’s Ladder Beach is named after the charming white wooden staircase that leads down from the beautifully landscaped Connaught Gardens. While both the staircase and the level path from Town Beach offer fantastic access, descending from Connaught Gardens provides a panoramic coastal view that is breathtaking no matter the season.
Backed by steep, sheltering cliffs, Jacob’s Ladder Beach is perfect for a family day by the sea. The natural rock pools revealed at low tide invite exploration, while the pebbles scattered along the shore tell their own ancient story—just remember to leave them behind, as they are protected by law.
Though there is no lifeguard service, swimming remains a favourite activity here, as does coastal walking. The beach sits on the East Devon Heritage Coast and is directly connected to the South West Coast Path, offering incredible opportunities to explore more of the Jurassic Coast’s awe-inspiring scenery.
