KEYNSHAM NEWS
Chairman’s Welcome
W
hen I wrote to you in the Spring, I emphasised how we should make the most of our family and friends, the better weather and enjoy taking on a new role or opportunity in our town. Of course, I didn’t know then that Europe was about to be involved in a war with all the misery that that would bring. It made my musings in the joys of Spring seem wildly optimistic. However, as always, the community of Keynsham stepped up, volunteers, including a number of town councillors, came forward to become involved in Keynsham Hope for Ukraine. They quickly set up collection points for contributions from residents to support the refugees fleeing from the conflict. They also established a method of getting the much needed parcels to Poland, together with a support network in that country to ensure that our donations were at a point of need. Thank you to all who have contributed so far to this work and, in particular to
McGills who have allowed us to store donations at their depot and generally helped with the work. Somebody once said that the future is an unknown country. None of us know what is to come. We can be pretty sure that it won’t always be what we expect. We must try to plan for the future but always live in the present. It is, after all, the only time we have. So, let’s make the most of it. Look for opportunities to bring happiness to our neighbours and ourselves in any way we can. After all, as Shakespeare said: “No man is an island…”. We are lucky that most of us live in a safe place among people we love. We should treasure this time for we don’t know when things might change again. I’m sure we haven’t forgotten Covid! Please continue to support Ukraine.

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM
M
y goodness, doesn’t time fly! I am writing this article in early April after working in my garden reorganising the South facing flowerbed and I know in a blink of an eye, my herbaceous perennials will be needing supports and l will be patrolling at night with my torch to catch any hungry slugs out for a late snack! Also, once again the volunteers at Keynsham In Bloom are working hard with our various projects to impress the judges from South West In Bloom this July and make our town a pleasant and colourful place in which to live. A reminder to our gardeners who would like to show their horticultural skills and join the Keynsham In Bloom competition, the theme being CROWNING GLORY. Entry forms are available from the Town Council in Temple Street or contact keynshaminbloom@icloud.com. To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, why not decorate your gardens FIT FOR A QUEEN with jewel-coloured plants and, once again, contact the Council to collect an entry form. The Knitting for Her Majesty group have been wonderful, please look out for the knitted bunting, the Union flag in Age UK’s window and numerous other items dangling from our trees in the Memorial Park and Market Walk, they will cheer even the dullest day. I am looking forward to celebrating her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee from 2nd to the 5th of June and especially the Picnic in the Memorial Park on the 4th June where there will be entertainment and music so bring the family for a great day. Keynsham In Bloom will have a stall at the picnic the aim being to sell sunflowers. As you will all know, life for the Ukrainian people is dreadful at present and KIB would like to sell baby sunflowers,
the national flower of the Ukraine, and any money raised will be sent to assist this worthy cause. Keynsham In Bloom Volunteers are a busy little band of people and if you would like to get involved, please contact myself, catherinemarywoodman@gmail.com or Dawn Drury at keynshaminbloom@icloud.com You would be made very welcome. Keep well, safe and gardening. Mary Woodman

KEYNSHAM’s Hope for Ukraine
I
think we were all deeply touched and sympathetic as we watched the unfolding events in Ukraine and it left many of us with a desire to be of practical help. We’ve witnessed hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals turn into over ten million refugees over the course of 3 weeks and this has meant that an immediate response to those needs was required. In Keynsham, we have encouraged people to send money to established charities that are best placed to provide assistance immediately to those fleeing from the war, and two funds that we have encouraged donations towards are the British Red Cross, via their web page, or via telephone on 0300 023 0820, or the Disaster’s Emergency Committee via their web page or via telephone on 0370 60 60 900
It became apparent quite quickly that there was also a desire in Keynsham to provide physical donations, and after sorting through and considering the different projects that were running in Bristol, one stood out as well organised and carefully established. “Hope for Ukraine” is the project that I have chosen to be involved with as it comes from an established and experienced group that have worked with charities in Eastern Europe for many years. Currently pursuing their charity status, they have created an infrastructure with headquarters
based at Carmel Church in Brislington and at a warehouse kindly supplied by McGills in Keynsham. ‘Hope for Ukraine’ work directly with churches in Eastern Europe that are currently taking in refugees that need emergency supplies. The lists of items that they require are lists provided to us by those that are working with those refugees, so we can be certain that no items are wasted or not used.
A number of our Town Councillors have worked to create and establish collection ‘hubs’ across Keynsham at St John’s, St. Dunstan’s, Community at 67 and Lime Landscaping in Willsbridge. Each week we take in hundreds of donations and we are all extremely grateful for the extraordinary generosity of Keynsham people. Each week a list of items needed is published on local social media, on the doors of St. John’s church and at the ‘Hope for Ukraine Website’ and it is our hope that this generosity can continue for the many months that it might be needed. We hope that you will make our lists part of your weekly shop and those lists can be found at: https://hopeforukraine.org.uk Cllr Dave Biddleston

Abney & Baker Home Care and Support Raising The Bar For Carers We’ve always done things differently at Abney & Baker and continuing that trend, we’re really excited to launch Fairer Care, our new recruitment arm. Why Fairer Care? Since the very first day when we signed up with the Living Wage Foundation, before we’d even hired anyone, we set out to improve the pay and employment experience for carers.
“Abney & Baker is great and I’d highly recommend them. It’s like day is to night compared to the last company I worked with. I feel supported and respected. Great pay” A&B Carer.
Every year since, we’ve found ways to build on this and provide better pay and terms and a better carer experience. So, Fairer Care is a celebration of this.
You’ll also gain loads of transferable skills including time management, communication skills, ability to prioritise, working as a team, and plenty more.
From paying for our care team’s full shift at full hourly rate and guaranteed pay contracts to introducing small community teams, we’re dedicated to finding, training, developing, and supporting the best people out there.
What is the pay like in care?
Why work in care? It’s one of the most rewarding jobs you can do! You can see the immediate and positive impact you have on the lives of people you support. You make a real difference to someone’s quality of life, helping them to stay living confidently and happily in their own home.
Full shift pay and great hourly rates mean a care team member with Abney & Baker can earn between £22,900 and £27,800 a year which is 25% above the UK average. Guaranteed pay contracts as standard also mean you can have confidence in what you’ll get at the end of the month. Carers tell us it has been the difference that has made family holidays, a new car, and saving for rainy days possible.

‘Give a Jab Keynsham’ Fundraising for Vaccines
A
Keynsham resident has launched an exciting and ambitious scheme to help deliver Covid vaccines to every corner of the globe. Local folk musician, Helen James, has launched Give a Jab Keynsham, an initiative which allows us all to show our appreciation of our wonderful health services and our gratitude to live in a country where vaccinations are freely given to all, by helping to pay for doses to be delivered to less fortunate communities around the world where medical infrastructure may be lacking and inoculation rates remain low. Helen has set up a Crowdfunder fundraising page: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/givea-jab-keynsham where all money raised will go to support UNICEF’s vital campaign to deliver 2 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccine to health workers and the most vulnerable in countries where they are needed most. Give a Jab Keynsham went live in mid-December 2021 and raised an amazing £670 in the first 2 weeks alone! “We know that Covid won’t be truly beaten until it is beaten in every part of the world,” says Helen, “We are so fortunate to live in a country which has the resources to deliver free vaccinations so efficiently. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to show solidarity with other parts of the world that are not as lucky as us, by donating each time we receive our own jabs and boosters. Any amount, however small, will help; whatever you can afford. Let us, as a town, demonstrate the power of community and folk coming together to help; individuals and organisations, churches, businesses, community groups and neighbourhoods. Everyone working together, we can really make a difference.”
Andy Wait, Chair of Keynsham Town Council, supports the campaign saying: “In this country, vaccines are available to us free with little inconvenience. “Sadly, Covid 19 will only be crushed when the whole world is jabbed. Please help UNICEF inoculate the whole world. Keynsham is a great community, please give what you can to support this vital work so we can all be free to live.” Give a Jab Keynsham will be ongoing all through 2022 and until the UNICEF Covid 19 Vaccine campaign closes. Cllr Duncan Hounsell has joined the campaign leading Saltford and Corston Give a Jab crowdfunder pages and also Tim Roberts, retired agriculturalist and Marksbury resident, is campaigning with Give a jab Marksbury. Keynsham can be a model for others to follow - if we blaze a trail, more villages, towns and cities around the country may follow suit and the ripples of the campaign multiply far beyond our patch. Please support Give a Jab Keynsham and help our town, once again, show how kind, generous and special it is, and really make a difference!

Keynsham Music Festival 25th Anniversary 27th June – 3rd July
O
rganising the Festival this year for our 25th Anniversary has been a roller-coaster of emotions. There is real excitement that we are, at long last, able to put on some truly amazing events and performances to bring our community together but there is also real disappointment in that we have to make some very difficult choices as to what we can realistically afford because we are seeing huge increases in our costs. Our sincere thanks to the Town Council and local business sponsors who continue to be so supportive. Having to make financial decisions months before the event is a risk which we take every year but we know we can always rely on the generosity of you, the public, to donate at the gates to cover the costs. However, this year is proving to be a little more challenging! The weekend festival events have always been free, but for those who can afford it, this year we will be collecting donations on both the Saturday and Sunday, and we are asking you to donate £5 per adult for each of the days you visit. All children are completely free. You will be able to
donate by cash, card, or phone. If you are a taxpayer, we would be very grateful if you could let us have your details so that we can take advantage of Gift Aid. Some of the events in the week leading up to the festival will charge an entry fee which can be paid for in advance.
What can you look forward to this year? We hope we have catered for all tastes – and here are some of the highlights. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - a full live performance (at The Space on Monday 27th June) to celebrate 50 years since its release - followed by David Bowie hits. Puccini’s opera Tosca (in the Park on Thursday 30th June) by festival favourites Opera in a Box. A chance to see this famous opera performed in English in a Big Top – an evening not to be missed. Reggae in the Park (Friday 1st July) – Da Fuchaman and the Fire Blaze Band supported by St Opia. Anyone who caught their performances back in September will know this is going to be a very special evening. Full bar and a Mexican pop-up restaurant courtesy of Dalia Cocina.

Access by (free) ticket only. Cutting energy bills and carbon emissions in KEYNSHAM
K
eynsham Community Energy has helped over 150 people make their houses more energy efficient, by providing free draughtproofing products and advice leaflets. It’s all thanks to a grant from the Bath and West Community Energy Fund. Volunteers from the group hosted pop up energy efficiency cafes, attended events and spoke at local clubs and societies. They gave away door, window and chimney draught-proofing, low energy lightbulbs, room thermometers and radiator reflectors. Keynsham Community Energy Chair, Nick Coates, said: “The last two years have been tough. First COVID-19 meant many people lost their jobs or were furloughed, putting strain on households. Then the cost of living started to bite, and energy bills have gone through the roof. There has never been a more urgent need to insulate our homes and lower our energy bills. Peter Capener, Managing Director of Bath and West Community Energy, said: “Helping people make their homes more energy efficient is a winwin. It doesn’t only result in lower fuel bills. It also helps the country reduce our carbon footprint, because well-insulated homes require less energy to heat them.”
With energy prices and the cost of living going through the roof, Keynsham Community Energy is determined to carry on their work in 2022. Watch out for their pop-up events in Keynsham and Saltford this year! Keynsham Community Energy is also working with Bath and North East Somerset Council to put community owned solar panels on the roof of the Keynsham Riverside View apartment complex. This project is in the advanced planning stage and will provide renewable electricity to the Keynsham leisure centre at a discounted rate. www.keynshamcommunityenergy.org
The latest IPCC report highlights the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and calls for massive energy efficiency and energy reduction efforts. The UK government’s energy strategy must prioritise insulating the UK’s draughty housing stock.

KTCRFM

ne of the reasons that KTCRfm was granted its Ofcom Public Service Broadcasting Licence in 2019 was that the Keynsham Hour, then being broadcast by Somervalley FM, was a genuinely community based programme. In a single year of a one hour a week programme the work and news of over 50 local organisations was featured. This is the secret of successful local radio – those “organisations” included local politicians, local community groups, musicians, artists and local businesses.

and fund raising initiatives – at short and long notice. It is daily – the local press, after all, is weekly or just monthly. The KTCRfm Facebook page has recently recorded a peak of 20,000 “hits” over an ongoing 28 day period and that has to be some indication of how many people are now listening to KTCRfm. It was so good to hear that a new member turned up to join one local community group because she “heard about it on the radio”. It is still true that a significantly large local demographic does not, or cannot, engage in social media. Following Good Morning the weekly KTCR Hour offers a noticeboard where local issues and event can be featured in more detail. Many local organisations are now using KTCRfm as normal practice, and there is plenty of space for more, and it’s free. There are many other places on the radio, that will act as a notice board for you, as well. The weekly Churches Together programme Believe Together is one, as so is the Back Track programme where an individual can talk about themselves, their mission or business, or community organisation for a whole hour as well playing their favourite tunes. and many listeners will know a great deal more about her, her aspirations and what drives her. If you, or your organisation wants to reach a real spread of the community just email KTCRfm@ gmail.com to open a chat about what might be the best way for you to make use of KTCRfm. Or ask someone to email for you. But do listen in to KTCRfm to hear what other people and groups are doing! Many of the presenters of KTCRfm shows broadcast ways to contact them, and have associated social media pages to support and publicise events and causes further. KTCRfm, or course, also offers more formal advertising opportunities, or course, at very reasonable prices. But KTCRfm also offers something more which is unique. Your chance to be involved in local radio – a chance to learn skills like no other, especially IT skills, to be creative and to enhance self confidence, in the care of people who know what they are doing. And all enshrouded in the safety of British Broadcasting Standards! The door is truly open for you to make use of KTCRfm, your truly local radio.

T
he youngest pupils at Castle Primary School in Keynsham were full of excitement during a visit by First Bus inspector, Ian Street, who arrived at the school early one morning and brought a double decker bus with him! Children in both Reception classes and Puddleducks Preschool had the opportunity to explore the bus, climbing up to the top deck, ringing the bells and even sitting in the driver’s seat. They were fascinated to learn about the day in the life of a local bus driver. The following week, the Reception classes were lucky enough to meet Ian again, but this time they took a trip on
the 349 to Keynsham High Street as part of their lessons this term about transport. “For some children, this was their first ever bus journey and the experience was incredibly exciting for them,” said Irina Creed, Early Years’ Lead. “They loved learning about bus routes and were inspired to draw maps of their own journey and label everything they had spotted along the way.”

TOWN COUNCIL OFFICES OPENING FULLY SOON!
I
t has not been an easy, almost three years, for the Town Council. What with us having to evacuate 15 – 17 Temple Street in April 2019 owing to the contamination with dust and noise from the Riverside construction works, followed by three separate water leaks over the summer, again, as a result of the construction works. We were then re-homed, for a long period of time, within the B&NES Civic Centre building until the COVID pandemic hit and a series of lockdowns forced our administration staff to work from home. Our grounds maintenance staff have continued to be out and about every day during this pandemic looking after the green spaces, play areas and Cemetery, whilst the Youth Workers have been offering on-line activities for young people. Recently our administration staff returned to the office which is now regularly open to the public between 9.00 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. Monday – Friday. There should be a member of staff in the office most afternoons too. Recently, we had delivery of all our office furniture that has been in storage for a long period of time and we will be taking the next few weeks to unpack and get our office running efficiently, to be open full time (hopefully at the beginning of May). Please note that if the door is locked, you will need to ring the doorbell to gain entry, and in order to protect everyone’s health, any visitors will be required to use hand sanitiser upon entry and keep socially distant.

Churches Together offer help for the Ukraine
C
hurches Together in Keynsham and Saltford are taking collections and sending funds to organisations, agencies and partners that they already have operating both within Ukraine and in the surrounding countries. In addition, as a collective, Churches Together supports Christian Aid, which has an appeal for Ukraine and is part of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). Separate fundraising initiatives have been carried out by the churches and two of the Churches, St John’s and St Dunstan’s, along with Community @67, are drop-off hubs for the collection of the specific items that have been identified as priority donations. Collections of these and so much more have revealed the urgent compassion that people are expressing for the refugees and those who remain for whatever reason. This is being organised overall by the Carmel Church in Brislington who have direct links with a Pastor in South West Ukraine. The list of items needed and further information can be found at their website: https://hopeforukraine.org.uk/ CTKS will also be assisting with Red Cross street collections in the near future. The longer-term support for the refugees is a strong focus for the local churches and St.
John’s Church has signed up to http://www. sanctuaryfoundation.org.uk/ who are providing advice and guidance around sponsoring people/ families displaced by the Ukraine War. CTKS is keen to explore the possibility of sponsorship for Ukrainian families who arrive locally and is keen to work collaboratively in all areas of support with the Keynsham Town Council, the local authority B&NES, and other local community groups. Churches Together have an abiding concern for all refugees and there is constant prayer for their welfare. All the churches are providing space for prayer at this very distressing and unprecedented time.
