It's all go aT MIDSOMER NORTON STATION
A
fter a successful 2021 operating season, the Somerset and Dorset Railway at Midsomer Norton South Station is currently closed for public operations, however, that doesn't mean there's nothing going on! Our permanent way team has decided to tackle the task of replacing worn rail and sleepers within the station area. The labour intensive work to replace it commenced on January 2nd where 4 sections of track were prepared for lifting. Ground preparation, sleeper laying, rail assembly and then finally ballasting will all be completed in good time for our new season commencing in April. Work also continues in the gardens and on the restoration of the collection of wagons and coaches across the station site. Our 2022 operating season starts on Saturday 2nd April with a weekend of Steam Trains at the station. Easter Sunday and Monday will once again see our steam locomotives in action with a Children’s Easter Egg Hunt and locally sourced hot cross buns and Easter biscuits served in our Buffet Coach. A busy April comes to a close with our three day steam and diesel gala starting on Friday 22nd. Keep your eyes on our website and social media channels for more information and tickets.
The full 2022 calendar will be published shortly, but this year will see the largest number of running days we have ever had! Other events will include further week day operations with the DMU and the unique experience provided by the Wickham Trolley. With the increased number of operating days, we are now on the lookout for more volunteers especially within the station shop and buffet coach. Volunteering just one day a month would help us immensely. Not every role is about operating the trains and running the station, we also have some roles which can be done from the comfort of your home. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved and working with new people, volunteering at the Station could be for you! If you would like more details please contact chrissdjr@gmail.com

join Midsomer Norton’s new Local Cultural Programme
V
isitors to Midsomer Norton, alongside residents and businesses based in the town, are all invited to join in the first of a series of events being hosted as part of Midsomer Norton’s Local Cultural Programme. This new initiative is being led by the Midsomer Norton Community Trust and is being funded by Historic England as part of the High Streets Heritage Action Zone scheme. Manager of Midsomer Norton Community Trust, Alex Davis, said: “It has been a difficult couple of years for everyone, so we’re thrilled to be launching 2022 with a series of events to bring people together again and ensure that the High Street is being used and enjoyed by all. We’ve been working closely with several community groups to bring this programme together and we can’t wait to show everyone what’s next.” The first event of the programme was the Midsomer Norton Wassail which took place on 12th February. The event began at 1pm at the Assembly Room at the Town Hall before a procession to the Town Park where the traditional ceremony took place in the Sensory Garden. As part of the event, there was also a mini market held in the Town Park full of rural arts and crafts

The Midsomer Norton Community Trust are encouraging residents and businesses to open their curtains and create illuminated window displays on the theme of Midsomer Memories to amuse, entertain, and inspire. SOMER VALLEY FOODbank
T
he team at the Somer Valley Foodbank have recently been focused on moving to their new warehouse. Unfortunately, they had to leave their larger one for reasons beyond their control, but fortunately, a benefactor found them a new one, which is great as warehouse space is at a premium these days. The team are now settled and have devised new procedures to ease the smooth running of the warehouse. Once again, the generosity of the community has been fantastic and the Foodbank collected 1.5 tonnes of food at their Tesco collection. Besides that, there have been several donations of food and the churches in the area have provided items from the most wanted list. There have also been several monetary donations, which will go towards the cost of the new warehouse. There was even a mystery donation of £500, which was amazing. There was the usual Christmas rush of clients, but the team were able to fulfil all the vouchers that people brought and clients even had bags of Christmas goodies that we were able to put together thanks to the donations given by a local school, Cadbury’s and local businesses. Thankfully most of the Christmas items have been handed
out and there are no left over mince pies or Christmas puddings! They are working with the B&NES Affordable Food Network to help people in crisis and are behind the Council initiative of ‘money first’ which aims to provide ways for families to have enough money so that they do not need to depend on free food handouts. Over the coming year, the team will also be organising courses for volunteers, so they know how best to direct people to other organisations to give them help to get out of their crisis. With the help of the community, Somer Valley Foodbank can continue to provide the emergency service of food parcels to those in need across the Somer Valley area, donating food or money. The Somer Valley Foodbank has a distribution centre in Midsomer Norton and you can find this at The Salvation Army Hall in Midsomer Norton on Monday from 12 - 2pm. Easter food traditions
F
rom roast lamb to Hot Cross Buns and chocolate eggs, Easter’s traditional foods have some of the best flavours. The foods we eat at this time of year go back centuries and some of them link back to the origins of the Easter festival. Find out more about the UK’s favourite Easter foods here.
Easter eggs Easter eggs first became associated with Easter in the 19th century after being created and sold by Cadbury. They were inspired by the tradition of decorating real eggs at Easter. The UK’s first Easter eggs were covered with marzipan flowers and filled with almonds.
Hot Cross Buns We all know the cross on the top is a symbol of the crucifixion and are supposed to be eaten on Good Friday to commemorate the Easter story. According to tradition, Hot Cross Buns cooked on Good Friday are said to never go mouldy throughout the year and if you split one with a friend, it is said that your friendship will get stronger through the coming year. In Tudor times, fruit buns were used for special occasions, which is why a cross was added to them.

This cake is usually eaten during Lent and features 11 marzipan balls on the top to represent the apostles, minus Judas. There is also a layer of marzipan in the middle too, so this is a great Easter treat for anyone who loves almonds!
Roast Lamb Ever wondered why we eat lamb at Easter? It’s because Jesus was the sacrificial lamb of God, as well as being perfect for spring because of lambs being born in the spring, making it a fresh, seasonal meal.
Easter biscuits Did you know that historians think Easter biscuits originated in the South West? That means that here in Midsomer Norton we can eat as many of them as we like! These biscuits differ from other fruit biscuits because they include Cassia Oil which is traditionally thought to have been used to clean Jesus’ body after the crucifixion.
TRADITIONAL ROAST LEG OF LAMB WITH MINT SAUCE Ingredients: 1.5-2kg leg of lamb 8 small springs fresh rosemary 2 tbsp honey 25g melted butter 150 ml dry cider
For the mint sauce: A large handful of fresh mint leaves 1 tbsp caster sugar 3-4 tbsp cider or wine vinegar 2tbsp boiling water
Method Preheat the oven to 200c or gas mark 6. Using a sharp knife, make small cuts in the leg of lamb and insert the rosemary. Place aside. Mix the butter and honey together with a little salt and pepper to taste and pour over the leg
of lamb, making sure it seeps into the cuts. Put the leg of lamb into a roasting tin, pour the cider in and cover with foil. Roast the lamb between 1.25 and 1.5 hours. When the lamb is half cooked, remove the foil and baste frequently with the juices from the roasting tin for the remaining time. Remove the joint from the oven, lift the lamb onto a warmed serving plate, cover with foil and leave to stand for half an hour. While the meat is resting, make the mint sauce. Finely chop the mint leaves and mix with the sugar in a small bowl. Add boiling water and stir well until the sugar has dissolved. Stir in the vinegar and leave the sauce to stand for half an hour before serving. Serve together with roasted vegetables.
EASTER BISCUITS Ingredients: 100g golden caster sugar 1 egg ½ tsp baking powder 80g currants 100g soft butter 250g plain flour 2tbsp milk ½ tsp cassia oil or 1 tsp mixed spice
Method Start by preheating your oven to 200 degrees or gas mark 6. Place some greaseproof paper on a big baking tray and leave to the side.
In a bowl, beat the sugar and butter together until soft and fluffy. Add the egg and whip until completely mixed. Fold in the flour, baking powder and spice. Gently mix together whilst slowly adding the milk until you get a dough. Knead in the currants. Move the dough to a floured surface and roll out to your desired thickness. Create individual biscuits, either using a cutter or the rim of a glass. Place on the tray and bake until the edges start to turn golden, around 12 minutes. Sprinkle with sugar when still hot and then allow them to cool.

Midsomer Norton WInter round-up
M
idsomer Norton Town Council and Midsomer Norton Community Trust held a series of successful events towards the end of 2021 to mark Remembrance Day and to celebrate the Christmas season On Sunday 14th November, the town’s annual Remembrance Parade returned after a break because of the pandemic. The Town Council worked with the Midsomer Norton and Radstock Branch of the Royal British Legion to organise the event. The parade left North Road/Radstock Road at around 10.40am and marched toward the town’s War Memorial, where two minutes silence was observed. The laying of wreaths from local organisations followed and then the parade moved on to St John’s Church where a remembrance service took place. Later in the month, the town welcomed Dan Norris, Mayor for the West of England Combined Authority to turn on the Christmas lights. Father Christmas also made an appearance, giving out gifts from Tesco and reindeer packs from the Midsomer Norton Men’s Shed. Midsomer Norton and Radstock Silver Band provided the entertainment and a reindeer duck
race was held. Midsomer Norton Town Council has thanked the Midsomer Norton and District Carnival Association, Sainsbury’s, Somer Valley FM, Midsomer Norton Library and the town warden for helping the event happen. Other events for Christmas included the Teen Cinema Night, which was free for teenagers living in Midsomer Norton. The film chosen this year was The Christmas Chronicles. Younger children enjoyed themselves at the Children’s Christmas Party which took place the day after and the older members of the community enjoyed the Seniors’ Christmas Party which was held on 10th December and was the 10th year that the event took place. We hope that 2022 will be full of even more festive cheer than 2021! Find out about more events taking place in the town by visiting midsomernortoncommunitytrust.co.uk

BIG CHANGES FOR Midsomer Norton & Radstock Silver Band
I
t is with regret that we announce that Jo Sykes has decided to resign as our musical director at the end of last year. The ongoing effects of Covid-19 on the banding world are still being felt, and we are not isolated from that with some members deciding to move on after lockdown. To those that have or are now leaving, we thank you for you dedication and support for the band over the years and wish you all the best for the future. 2022 is not the end but rather an exciting new beginning of our journey together as we rebuild under a new experienced respected leader in the New Year. To lead this rebuild we are extremely lucky to have Gareth Key who has achieved amazing things in the brass band world with bands such as Cory, he is also an accomplished arranger, conductor and formally our solo trombone and chairman so a true friend of the band :-) Find out more about him here: brassbandresults.co.uk/people/gareth-key In 2022, Gareth will work with the band and our new music selection sub-committee to pick music

that both excites and challenges and allows us to grow The start of our new journey began on Tuesday, 4th January and we were happy to welcome a nice group of current members and a few familiar faces from the past. Events for 2022 are already coming in and more will come, so the future for the band is positive. We always welcome new players to the band room, on a one off or on-going basis. Welton School GETS ACTIVE!
R
ecent months have seen several significant developments in the outdoor experiences on offer at Welton Primary School.
Thanks to a generous donation from the school's PTFA, playtimes have been improved with new lunchtime play equipment. OPAL lead, Debbie Stevens, said: “At Welton we are fortunate to have extensive grounds at the back of our school. The children have a wide range of zones to enjoy and move between. The loose parts area, football pitch and mud kitchen are always popular, but it has been great to have the funds to develop the ‘games’ area. The addition of space hoppers, pogo stick jumpers, football bibs, sensory balls, 12 JD Bug scooters (and helmets), junior tennis balls, giant Jenga and giant snakes and ladders have been gratefully received by all of the children." In addition to this, at the end of last year the
school were very grateful to receive a generous donation from Radstock and Westfield Big Local which was used to purchase a large wooden outdoor classroom big enough to hold a whole class of children. Pupils have named the new permanent outdoor learning space 'The Nest' to
tie in with their bird themed class names and the aim is to use this space to support the curriculum as well as OPAL and forest schoolwork. Many pupils have already spent time using The Nest to enjoy hot chocolate, as well as story sessions and in addition to this, the PTFA have just purchased a new fire pit for all the pupils to enjoy.
Cross Country A team of keen runners from Welton Primary School Running Club took part in the recent B&NES Schools' Cross Country Competition. The school running club is relatively new but has been successful so far. The club's lead said: " We are very proud of all of the children who represented Welton and took part in this event. Our running club meet once a week and run approximately 2 km along the Colliers Way cycle path - which we are lucky enough to be able to access easily from the back of our school. The children are growing in confidence and ability with many choosing to take up running on the weekends as well." The photo on page 21 shows Poppy Wood with the bronze medal she received at the event. Poppy tells us she was happy with coming third in her first cross country event and can’t wait to complete more!

Spring cleaning: Our top tips
A
s we move into spring, it is the perfect time to revitalise your space, ready for a new season. Here are our top tips for giving your home a spring clean.
Decluttering We all know that a tidy living space helps to lower stress and anxiety, plus inhaling the dust from forgotten items that are cluttering up your workspaces and floor isn’t good for anyone. One easy way to start a spring clean is by doing a little tidy and organising your rooms one at a time.
Be green Doing a spring clean is all well and good but think about the products that you’re using. Always look for products in recyclable containers or use old school cleaning methods like vinegar and baking powder – it is much more cost effective and provides a lower carbon footprint.
Work from top to bottom There is no point running the hoover around and then deciding to brush the cobwebs from the corners of the room or the light fixtures. Start from the ceiling and work your way down, that way you won’t have to do some jobs twice!
Don’t forget the walls! Dust settles on walls as much as it does on the floor and other services, use a damp towel to wipe down the walls starting from the top and work your way down.
Clear out those cupboards Spring cleaning isn’t just about donating old clothes, make a point to go through your kitchen and bathroom cupboards too and get rid of any out of date food, medicines, make up and anything else you’re not going to use. READ ALL ABOUT IT AT Midsomer Norton Primary School
M
idsomer Norton Primary School pupils have been learning about putting together and publishing their own magazine, MNPS News at their weekly Magazine Club. The club is run by Mrs Josham and together, the pupils have learned how to create eye catching headlines, set out articles and how to conduct an interview. Since its launch, the children have not only improved their literacy skills but have also grown in confidence and have really enjoyed being given responsibilities and titles, much like you would at a real newspaper. As well as utilising the children’s writing skills,
photography and speaking talents have also been improved. Make sure to look out for the next issue of MNPS News – you never know, you might recognise a couple of names in the future!

Our Time, Our Space Bright Start Children’s Centres
P
regnancy, birth and the time when babies are very young can be a time of great change and adjustment for families. It’s an exciting time, but one that can be fraught with anxiety and worry. For some women this, along with low mood or depression can mean that they feel that they are not coping and may need extra support to get through these feelings.
Bright Start Children’s Centres work in partnership with midwives, health visitors and local organisation “Creativity Works” to deliver a project called “Our Time, Our Space”, specifically for pregnant women who are experiencing low mood or anxiety.
The course is carefully designed so that mums-to-be: A ccess ‘time and space’ for themselves. We use a professional artist to help participants discover creative skills – no experience necessary. All materials are provided as well. G ain new skills & coping strategies to support wellbeing Reduce anxiety and isolation and G ain practical and emotional support during pregnancy and the first year of being a parent Our Time, Our Space is most suitable for women who are between 18-28 weeks pregnant at the start of the course, although we can accept women at any stage of pregnancy. Classed as ‘antenatal care’, if attendance has been recommended by a doctor or midwife, means that time off work for attendance must be facilitated by employers.
The 6 week programme (each session lasts 1.5 hours) is run by experienced practitioners and takes place in a relaxed environment, with refreshments provided. Sessions include art-based activities, relaxation for labour, Theraplay - supporting relationshipbuilding with baby and peer support from other mums. On completion of the course, the Children’s Centre team will help mums-to-be to consider what support they may benefit from after the birth of their baby. This could be access to “My Time, My Space”, a similar group that runs for mums and their babies up to the age of 2 years. It could be access to “Bright Beginnings”, a group for parents and their babies to learn Infant massage, learn about early brain development and strengthen attachment. Or it could be any of our many other groups and services. For more information about Our Time, Our Space or any other Children’s Centre Services, please chat to your midwife or Health Visitor, or phone the Children’s Centre direct on 01225 396660. Our next course starts in March 2022, so we are inviting referrals now.

Midsomer Norton Town Hall Transformation
M
idsomer Norton’s Town Hall has served the community since 1859 and over the last 150 years, has really become the heart of the town. Since first being built, the town hall has had multiple owners and dozens of tenants, all of whom have left their mark on the building. With several additions and internal positions, the building has become very difficult to use for the many organisations that are based there. Thanks to the dynamic team of Trustees at the Midsomer Norton Community Trust, the Town Hall has an impressive list of groups who use it, with around 30,000 visits per year. A further 7,000
visits attend Art and Culture events, such as the cinema and musical performances. However, the building’s layout does present challenges to those visitors.

According to the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, who are former tenants of the Town Hall, this is the reason they moved, finding that the interior layout presented accessibility challenges. With this in mind, a proposal has been put together to transform the town hall to preserve it for future generations. The plans include reinstating the original ground floor market hall, a rear extension for meeting rooms, storage space and service rooms, as well as the replacement of internal services, with updates to the wiring and heating to make the building more energy efficient. Without these changes, income and sustainability are limited. One priority is fixing a leak to prevent further damage. The proposals have been put together to make sure that the new building retains its heritage, serves the community and is a more welcome place for people to use. Funding has been received from the High Street Heritage Action Zone,
27
Midsomer Norton Town Council and B&NES Council. Additional funding may come from a loan from the Public Works Loan Board. The Council will be required to seek the approval of the Secretary of State for this loan, which is to be paid back over 50 years and the budget has been adapted to fulfil any loan repayments that may be required. If funding applications are unsuccessful, it is proposed that a loan will cover any shortfall. Representatives from Midsomer Norton Town Council, said: “We strongly believe that in transforming this Grade II listed building it will become a catalyst for regenerating the market town’s heritage economy.” The Town Council are interested in your views on the Town Hall’s transformation, please send comments to the Town Clerk, either by email, administrator@midsomernortontowncouncil.co.uk or by post: Town Clerk, Town Hall, The Island, Midsomer Norton BA3 2HQ.

High Street Heritage Action Zone updates
T
he end of 2021, was a busy time for the High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) project in Midsomer Norton. Several new programmes were launched and it hoped that this will be carried forward into the spring. The most important update includes the launch of the Midsomer Norton Cultural Programme. This saw the appointment of Beth Whalley, the new Cultural Programme Engagement Coordinator and the ongoing improvement and development works for the High Street, new Market Square at the Island and the restoration of the Town Hall. Part of Beth’s role has included delivering new events and activities, including two in February. The first was the Window Trail which began on 10th February and will run until the 20th as part of the National Window Wanderland initiative. The second event was a revival of the Midsomer Norton wassail on 12th February. Other HSHAZ project streams advanced in recent months, including efforts to improve the open spaces and appearance of the High Street. Following recommendations, the team have now signed off on plans to renew several of the public benches, introduce seasonal banners and create a new mural on the High Street, which will be coming in the spring. Plans for the new Market Square at the Island have also progressed and landscape design processes are now taking place. New steps and ramps to the Town Hall are also being designed to ensure that it is accessible and user friendly. With regards to the Town Hall renovation project, the HSHAZ team are continuing to work closely with the Town Council and other partners on Phase 1 of the scheme, which includes the reinstatement of the Market Hall at the ground floor. Planning and fundraising are now taking place for Phase 2.
For more information about the HSHAZ Project of Cultural Programme, please feel free to contact the team on MidsomerNortonHSHAZ@ bathnes.gov.uk or culture@ midsomernortoncommunitytrust.co.uk

or the first time in three years, Midsomer Norton Cricket Club are looking forward to something like a normal cricket season. The shortened 2020 season was the first to be disrupted by Covid and the 2021 season started with plenty of restrictions still in place. So, all are hoping that the 2022 season will be one to remember for all the right reasons. Weather permitting, there will be a full schedule of cricket this summer with three senior sides playing on Saturdays and women’s hard ball and soft ball teams. Youth team cricket continues to thrive at the club with age group teams at under 11, under 13 and under 15 levels and for the youngest of all, the All Stars and Dynamo sessions will again take place. Improvements to the playing and practice areas – and upgrades to the clubhouse – mean that the club continues to attract new members and provides important facilities to the local community.

Good quality food at a low cost – Radstock Food Club
R
adstock Food On Our Doorstep (FOOD) Club was launched in 2020 to provide local families with good-quality food at a low cost, while also reducing food waste. The club is run by a small but dedicated team of wonderful volunteers supported by Children’s Centre staff. It costs just £1 a year for a family to become a member of the club. Once they have joined, families pay £3.50 per week to receive a bag of food worth approximately £10-£15. The food varies each week and can include seasonal items, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and dairy, as well as staple store cupboard items such as pasta,
IF THE UK SPENT JUST £5 A WEEK WITH THEIR LOCAL SHOPS & BUSINESSES INSTEAD OF ONLINE OR WITH MULTI-NATIONALS, IT WOULD BE WORTH APPROX £16 BILLION GOING DIRECTLY BACK INTO OUR TOWNS. breakfast cereals and tinned goods. Dietary requirements can be accommodated, with items being substituted with appropriate alternatives. To become a member, families must live or work within approximately 15 minutes of the club, have a child under 18 years old and be on a low income or in receipt of benefits. The Covid-19 pandemic, along with spiralling energy and living costs, has led to an increase in families who are facing financial challenges. As part of their work supporting local families, Children’s Centre Family Support Workers promote the benefits of joining the Food Club and will support families to complete the membership application and attend. SWALLOW Charity Focus on employment
S
WALLOW, the local charity supporting teenagers and adults with learning disabilities, offers a range of help and support to enable its members to live enriched and fulfilling lives. One element of their lives that our members want us to support them in is employment. Being employed is about more than earning money. It’s about feeling valued, independent and fulfilled. SWALLOW Charity supports its members to gain valuable experience that can be used to improve their ability to gain employment. There are three strands of work skills, craft based work skills where people come together as a team and make products such as cards, decorations, jewellery and candles. These products are sold online and at craft fairs. Here's Paul (see the photo below) selling SWALLOW goods just before Christmas: The second strand is horticulture, every Thursday there is a group which learns about how to grow plants and fruit and vegetables. They plant hanging baskets and pots for sale. There is also a group of members who provide a free garden maintenance service to elderly and disabled
people in the local community. Thirdly, SWALLOW operates two community cafés, one in Radstock at St Nicholas Church Rooms and one at the Hive in Peasedown St John – both venues provide experience in catering in the kitchens and front of house and offer the local community healthy nutritious food and drink at very reasonable prices. If you would like to know more about how you can support SWALLOW’s work, or you are interested in joining any of the activities, please contact Nicky on nickyt@swallowcharity.org, or ring 01761 414034, or go to www.swallowcharity.org.

How is your carbon footprint?
W
ith the environment, climate change and global warming all becoming more and more relevant, we’ve put together some simple ways you can make a difference at home. Limit showers to less than 2 minutes and place a plastic bottle in your toilet system to save water in your flush.
Switching off the lights and using low energy lightbulbs can make more of a difference than you might think. Find out more at the Centre for Sustainable Energy, www.cse.org
Understanding which appliances use the most electricity in your homes can help you to see where you might cut back a little – if you have a smart meter, they’ll be able to tell you what appliances use the most and how much you use generally.
Switch off chargers at the plug or unplug; they use electric even if nothing is charging!
Only boil as much water as you need for a cuppa!
If your family are fit and healthy, turning down the heating and popping on a jumper can make a difference to your bills as well as CO2 emissions.
Hard to do with our busy lives, but you could aim to walk if your journey is under a mile. There are CO2 savings and health benefits too!
Make sure you use your council's recycling schemes, such as the green recycling box for plastic, glass and tin, food waste bins and cardboard recycling bags.

st Midsomer Norton Scout Group are getting set for the year ahead.
.Helen Lear, Group Scout Leader, said: “We’ve been working hard on our programme of activities for our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to make sure they have fun times and gain skills for life – our sections are looking forward to pet care, cookery and games, fire lighting and history walks this Spring. "But behind the scenes we also have plans to improve our facilities – our scout hall, vehicles and camping equipment. "We want our scouting family to have great surroundings they can be proud of, so our hall to do list is just like any family’s, with decorating, floor sanding and carpet laying right up there.” The Scout Section is also looking forward to the warmer weather and preparing for Summer Camp – an opportunity for our young members to learn new sports such as paddleboarding, kayaking and how to feed themselves at the end of a busy day!
Scouting offers many opportunities, and our volunteers work hard and turn their hands to many different tasks to deliver those opportunities – from fund raising for new equipment; building steps at our campsite in Wellow or learning new skills to share with our young people. It’s never a dull day. Sleeping out to support Julian House
J
on Durrant, a local businessman, is taking on Julian House’s Big Bath Sleep-Out for the second time in March to help raise vital funds and awareness for the charity. After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and suffering with his mental health, he found solace in volunteering at the charity’s hostel kitchen, he now wants to do more to help people experiencing homelessness and poor mental health and is encouraging others to do the same. Jon took part in the Big Bath Sleep-Out at home last year and found it challenging. He said: “Had I been forced to sleep out another two or three nights, I would have reached a mental health state where I would have needed to be admitted into hospital again. I genuinely don’t know how homeless people cope.” Jon said: “I want to take on the Big Bath SleepOut again to thank Julian House for what they did for me, as well as raising money and awareness. I believe that Julian House can give people the help and support to restart their lives. I would also encourage other people to take part in the Big Bath Sleep-Out in March. Firstly, with
more people attending, the event will hopefully raise much needed funds for Julian House to provide the huge range of services they do. Secondly, I don’t think that you can even start to imagine how hard it is to be a rough sleeper until you experience just one night of how it might be.” This year, members of the public can choose whether they’d like to join the Julian House team on Friday 4th March and sleep out in Alice Park, Bath, or choose to sleep out in their homes and gardens. The event is suitable for all ages, families, friends and colleagues. Find out more about the event and sign up here: bigbathsleepout.co.uk

A Thank you from The LIONS
T
he Radstock and Midsomer Norton Lions Club would like to thank you all for supporting their carol float collections over the Christmas period. . Speaking about the float, they said: “We would like to thank Paul for allowing us to ‘garage’ our float at his farm and Lion Rex for doing up the float during the summer months, giving it a much needed coat or two of paint. “We had great pleasure in bringing Father Christmas to many children in our area, especially as last year we were unable to bring him to the public, and we collected over £3,800 which will be used for our charity work locally, nationally and internationally.
“Whilst we were able to construct our float, we would not have been able to take it around without the help of Angie, Ann, Bob, Dave, Jacquie, John, Jon, Laurence, Margaret, Mike, Stuart & Susan, who generously gave up their time to help with the collections.” Currently, the Radstock and Midsomer Norton Lions are looking for people to join them, if you are interested, find out more by googling “Radstock Lions” or ring 0345 8339601, 01761 235556 or 07811 420536 or by email, contact@ rmnlions.org.uk.
