The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Midsomer Norton
M
any local groups have already made their plans to mark this special occasion, and the Town Council is pleased to announce its own plans, made in partnership with a series of local organisations. More details will emerge later, but this is the broad outline. On the first day of the four-day holiday break, Thursday 2nd June, there will be an Opening Ceremony at the Rugby Club, Silver Street, with the lighting of the Beacon. On the second Bank Holiday, Friday 3rd June, there will be a Music Festival in the Town Park from 2pm to 8pm, with other attractions including a “tennis inflatable” near the Leisure Centre, Gullock Tyning. On Saturday 4th June, the action shifts to Midsomer Norton South Railway Station in Silver Street where there will be a big street party. The party and train rides will be from 12pm and 8.30pm. Finally, on Sunday 5th June, there will be a festival at the Cricket Club, with live bands and refreshments, from 2pm to 6pm. And an afternoon tea at the Methodist Church (ticketed)
at 4pm will be followed by the Service of Thanksgiving at 6pm. So there will be something for everyone over four memorable days. Of course we hope for good weather, but the events have wet weather plans just in case. A working group of the Town Council has worked hard to shape the celebration, and it has been very heartening to have such ready co-operation from so many people in the town. Something to appreciate in advance, enjoy at the time, and prove a source for nostalgic reflection, like the Coronation, in the future.
Picnic essentials for the Jubilee Weekend
I
f you’re planning to celebrate the Jubilee with a picnic or you want to get prepared for National Picnic Week (which starts on 1st July this year) here is everything you need to pack for a perfect picnic. • Something to sit on Either bring a blanket or some fold out chairs if you don’t mind carrying them and you know you’ll have the space. It doesn’t need to be anything special, just something you can all comfortably sit on.
•U tensils, plates and cups In order to save on mess, make sure to pack some utensils, plates and cups. Make sure to go for bamboo or wooden knives and forks as these can be easily recycled if you don’t want to bring your kitchen cutlery. Paper plates can also be recycled as can paper cups – or even better, bring reusable bottles or flasks, just try to avoid plastics where possible! • Ice packs or thermos Keep food safe and tasty by adding some ice packs into your bag or for those of you who want a quick cup of tea, bring a thermos.
MIDSOMER NORTON LIFE
• A bottle opener If you’re planning a bit of a boozy picnic, perhaps for a special occasion, make sure to bring something to open your drinks! No one wants to be disappointed when they get to their location after all. • Bin bags If there aren’t any bins around where you can dispose of your litter, don’t leave it behind, bring some bags with you so you can take it home and dispose of it there. You can also use bin bags to put your used plates or cups in to save getting the inside of your picnic basket dirty.

• Picnic favourites Now you know what practical items you need in your basket, you just need the food and drink! Here are some of the UK’s favourite picnic items. Sandwiches Crisps Sausage Rolls Cherry tomatoes Cucumber slices Carrot sticks Pork pies Scotch Eggs Slices of cheese Bread sticks Cocktail sausages Hard boiled eggs Salad Cakes Fruit, like apples, strawberries and grapes

The Outfield Festival IS BACK
F
ollowing on from the hugely successful sell out festival in 2019, and after two years of waiting – the Outfield Festival returns bigger and better for 2022 on August 28th at Midsomer Norton Cricket Club. In 2019, over 1,500 people enjoyed one of the biggest social events in the Town’s history, and festival organisers say 2022 will be the party everyone has been waiting for.
2019 saw Toploader and East 17 headline and this year, the festival is bringing another big headliner to the town in Scouting For Girls. The three-piece indie pop group will be drawing the day to a close with a set packed full of their well known hits to sing along to. Organisers have been busy checking out support bands to ensure a high quality line up and are delighted to have secured Bristol-based synth pop band Mesh, finalists of the 2020 Pilton Stage competition to play at Glastonbury. Mesh have enjoyed chart success in Germany and have had played huge venues in Europe to great acclaim. Also on the lineup is Gabriel Templar, who creates his own unique sound by combining The Beatles incredibly catchy melody lines with Eminem's fast and clever lyrical pace. Gabriel has racked up over a million streams of his latest single “They’re Not Happy About Me” on Spotify and has a million plus following on Tiktok.
One of the 2022 Pilton Stage finalists, Irie Fire, will be bringing the reggae fusion groove to proceedings with their eight piece ensemble, and are sure to get the crowd up and dancing. Two further acts will be joining the line up and will be announced soon. Keeping everyone entertained between the sets again will be Somer Valley FM’s James Bridges, alongside Matt Ettle with Somer Valley FM also being on site to support the event.
MIDSOMER NORTON LIFE
The festival is very much a family friendly event and has a range of activities for the younger audience, including a silent disco, face and glitter painting, crafts and a soft play and creation area for the under 5’s. Plus a secret event to be unveiled on the day! Building on the first festival’s success, this year boasts a bigger stage with a screen, a dedicated under 16’s area and a disabled viewing platform. The festival opens its gates (and bar) at noon, and there will be plenty of food choices available. Tickets are on sale now at www.outfieldfestival. co.uk/tickets and are selling fast. Tickets in advance are £30 for over 16’s, £10 for 10-16 year olds and under 12’s are free. More information about the event can be found on the festival website.
There are still some sponsorship packages available with access to the hospitality area. If you are interested, please email outfieldfestival@gmail.com

SWALLOW Charity MEMBERS give back to the community
S
WALLOW is a local charity supporting teenagers and adults with learning disabilities. SWALLOW relies on donations from individuals and organisations to be able to respond to those who desperately need their support. SWALLOW members, those who the charity support, like to give something back to the community that they are in. They do this in several ways – the SWALLOW gardening group maintains elderly and disabled people’s gardens in the local area, one beneficiary said: “it is a shame that I can’t garden any more, but it is great that the lovely gardening team help me out.” Members also make food in both of the SWALLOW community cafés for vulnerable
families and recently, they have started raising money for those suffering from the war in Ukraine by sending the profits of daily specials in the café to the Disasters Emergency Committee. If you would like to know more about SWALLOW, the work that the charity does supporting local teenagers and adults with learning disabilities, and how you could get involved, please go to www.swallowcharity.org, or ring 01761 414034 and ask for Nicky Tew.

Midsomer Norton Town Council Website www.midsomernortontowncouncil.co.uk
T
he prospect of a new website for Midsomer Norton Town Council was raised on the December 2019 Finance and Operations agenda. At the time, the existing site was starting to show its age. Not only did it look dated, it was becoming increasingly cumbersome for the Council staff to maintain and update. Several quotes were sought with costs varying to over £7,000. Despite the considerable effort required, it was decided the Town Council would try producing the new website in-house utilising the existing skills and experience of the staff and councillors. The new site has been designed with a newspaper style look and feel with the home page now containing much more information to engage visitors. Articles are category based making it easier to add new content. To reduce the maintenance workload the site has features such as article expiration and can automatically propagate content to our social media channels. Going forward, the Communications Working Party envisage expanding our digital offering. Plans are underway to produce YouTube content
promoting our town and the events we host. We will continue to work with, and support, local print media providers but also look to utilise the skills and talents of our residents by reaching out to our town’s organisations who might like to contribute digital content showing Midsomer Norton at its best. The new website went live on the 19th March. To encourage as many people as possible to visit the new site and keep updated on the many wonderful things happening in our town, we will soon be launching a free prize draw for the first thousand people who enter with a top prize of a £100 Amazon voucher and five prizes of free tickets to the Community Cinema.

Cost of Living Support From AGE UK
W
e understand that the news is painting a worrying picture at the moment, both at home and away. The concern around the rise in food and fuel prices, as well as energy bills increasing are very real and will affect us all in the coming months. But we are all in this together, so don't forget about Age UK Bath & North East Somerset's free Information and Advice Service which offers trusted and impartial support. Missing out? According to the Government's own statistics, nearly one million people over 65 are not receiving benefits that they are entitled to. So, if you have not done so before, or if your circumstances have recently changed, we urge you to speak to us about a free benefit check. The types of benefits you could receive are varied and depend on your situation but can include Attendance Allowance, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support, Pension Credit and Warm Home Discount. Some of these benefits, such as Pension Credit, open the door to a wide range of other support, including help with energy bills.

Can you help Radstock Museum?
D
id you know the Museum is run almost entirely by volunteers? Did you know that the museum is independent and receives no government funding? Did you know that to remain open, the Museum relies on funds from admissions, donations and purchases from the shop and tearoom? The story of how Radstock Museum came to be is as fascinating as the history of the Somerset Coalfield and now the museum needs volunteers to help keep that story going. It all began when Dr Charles Chillcott came to Radstock as their new local GP and on meeting his patients heard their stories of times working in the Somerset Coalfield. He decided that though the mines had been closed, this way of life needed to be remembered and so he declared his intentions to form a local museum society. This led, in 1985, to the Radstock, Midsomer Norton and District Museum Society being formed. One of the people present at that original meeting was Dennis Chedgy who continues to give history talks and contribute to the Five Arches. He remains the longest serving museum volunteer and Society member. Dr Chillcott’s dreams were finally realised in February 1989, when the Bishop of Bath and Wells, officially opened the first museum. Manned and managed by volunteers, the museum was only able to open at weekends and bank holidays, but it nevertheless averaged 4,000 visitors a year over the next ten years before moved to its new permanent home at the Radstock Market Hall. In 1995, the Museum Society, with assistance from the local authority, purchased the Market Hall and renovated the building, reopening again in 1998. Since this time, there have been visitors from all over the world, plus regular local and international school visits and the museum has been adapted to make sure it is accessible for all, with wheelchair
access throughout and a lift so that everyone can experience the many artefacts on offer. To this day, the museum volunteers run extra activities and events, including the Bygone Days talks and Science in Radstock talks. The Education Team host school visits and run events during the school holidays, while the Exhibition Team research and put together exhibitions in the gallery which are regularly updated to cover a wide range of historical topics. One of the most recent additions including the Virtual Reality experience which was developed by students at Bath College’s Somer Valley campus, which allows you to take a virtual ride in coal truck through a mine with pit ponies, miners working, rock falls and floods. This is just one of the interactive displays you can enjoy during your visit. The museum always welcomes new volunteers who want to join the team, the museum is now fully open and school visits are running once again, which means they have the opportunity to expand the team of volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering at the museum, you will be rewarded by enjoying the company of a great team of people, the chance to learn about your heritage and learn new skills along the way. You can do as much or as little as you choose and volunteer in an area that interests

Central Garage has been providing vehicle repair services in Paulton for generations. Starting with Mr Frank A Raisey, a builder, who built Central Garage in Paulton’s High Street in 1945, to offer car and motorcycle repairs. The company was taken over in 1955 by Ron Laurence, who introduced the fuel filling station and Gerald Knight joined the company in 1962. Berkeley Motor Company (Berkeley Coaches) took ownership in 1972, moving the workshop to its current location on Ham Lane, Paulton, and adding a small fleet of hire vans, keeping the high street site as a car show room and fuel filling station. A few years later, Nick Cross, one of our senior technicians started and is still with us now. Central Garage became a Fiat dealership in 1978 and Graham Hodges joined the company as a parts manager. On 3rd March, 1981, Gerald and Graham took over Central Garage, growing the van and car hire agency, renaming it Central Hire and expanding the workshop. Shortly after, they became an agent for Bosch Electronics and expanded the new car sales part of the business. In 1982, they modernised the filling station and later progressed into a full spar shop. Alan Green joined the team in 2001 as an apprentice and on 3rd October 2016, Alan and his long term friend, Mark Gainey took over the business, turning it into Central Garage (Paulton) Ltd. Since then, they have grown the business
further, modernising the Central Hire vehicle fleet with the latest ULEZ compliant vehicles and now also offers local vehicle breakdown and recovery services.
The workshop facilities have also been modernised significantly, with state of the art equipment, expanding into an IMI approved performance tuning and remapping centre. Central Garage has also become a longlife custom exhaust franchise, known as Bath LongLife and a Dinitrol under body protection centre, offering full classic car restoration services. We now have five fully qualified vehicle technicians and we continue to keep up to date with the innovation of new vehicle technology, which is constantly developing.
At Central Garage (Paulton) Ltd, we pride ourselves on our longstanding track record of providing effective solutions with a personalised approach which has built us an amazing reputation. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Paulton, Midsomer Norton, Radstock and the surrounding areas for the continued support.

Cleaning of the Midsomer Norton War Memorial
T
he aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Midsomer Norton, as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The memorial was unveiled and dedicated on 11 November 1920 by Rev. RJ Davey. It commemorates 73 local servicemen who died during the First World War. Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the 36 fallen of that conflict. The memorial is a scaled-down replica of the Cenotaph, London with consent being given by its designer Edwin Lutyens to use the copyright of the design, albeit in different materials. It consists of a three stepped Blue Keynton stone base with St Aldhelm stone cenotaph. The memorial has a bronze wreath and plaques on its faces. The wreath is located on one of the side faces and below this is inscribed THE/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD with a small bronze plaque below.
Over time, the Memorial has become weathered, and the inscriptions were hard to read. The Town Council commissioned David Dunscombe to carry out the cleaning. David and his team also removed the flower beds and repaired the stonework around the Memorial. The project was funded from the Council's War Memorial Ear Marked Reserve. The Council would like to thank Celia’s Hairdresser for the use of water and electric during the project and Stonebarn for replanting the flowers from the flowerbeds to the Hollies Garden.

TOWN COUNCIL's Civic Service and Civic Awards
A
fter two cancelled years, the annual Civic Service is to return on Sunday 19th June 2022. It will be at 6pm at St John's Church and the Town Council is meanwhile keen to invite nominations for awards. We do expect a bumper crop, since we know the pandemic has brought out so much kindness and good work in the community, both formally organised by charitable and local authority groups (new and long established) and less formal initiatives to help those in need. If you know of anyone who has contributed to our community, either in the last few years or indeed over a longer period, do please put them
forward to the Town Council by ringing, emailing or writing. There are lifetime awards for those who contribute over a longer period, individual awards, and awards to recognise the good work of groups. The people and groups who are recognised in this way are appreciated both for their service, and for their willingness to come forward and accept the symbolic thanks of the town, which helps to build community pride and resilience over time. Please contact the Council in writing at The Town Hall, The Island, Midsomer Norton, BA3 2HQ, or ring 01761 418 701 or email administrator@midsomernortontowncouncil.co.uk, before the 6th May deadline.

he quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate cannot be underestimated. Swan Transport has always strived to be a friendly scheme and our team of volunteer drivers have shown such kindness over the last two years. Our passengers have been leaving the office staff comments and the overwhelming feature is how kind our drivers are and how much that means to them. The University of Sussex, partnering with Radio 4, have been studying kindness with neuroscientists examining the impact on the brain. This recent research has begun to shine a light on the benefits and impacts kindness on people and communities has. The pandemic has led us all to think more

'ACTIVE TRAVEL SOCIAL PRESCRIBING' Project FROM B&NES
M
ath and North East Somerset (B&NES) Council have been awarded a small pot of funding from the Department for Transport to explore the feasibility of delivering an ‘Active Travel Social Prescribing’ project in the Somer Valley. This project will form part of the existing local social prescribing service and offers an opportunity to support our residents health and wellbeing without the need for medicalised intervention, by encouraging and supporting people to be more active through walking and cycling. Examples of what B&NES hope to offer through the project are guided local walks, a 1-2-1 walking support programme; cycle training; bike hire; advice on ways to incorporate more walking and cycling into daily life; route planning; confidence building on two-wheels and inclusive cycling opportunities. The ‘Active Travel Hub’ will also be a focus for the community more generally; somewhere to enjoy a coffee and talk about the
ways in which general wellbeing can benefit from incorporating more active travel in one’s day to day activities. With so many opportunities to walk and cycle in the Somer Valley with the old railway alignment paths and beautiful countryside; we aim for the ‘Active Travel Hub’ to be a focal point for starting. B&NES are very keen to work with local residents and communities on developing this project and are eager to have your input into what this new project could offer in the local area. They welcome your ideas, thoughts and suggestions on what you think would be good to have available through this project and via the Hub, that will encourage and support residents to walk and cycle more in the local area. Please do get in touch with your thoughts and comments by e-mailing Public_Health@BATHNES.GOV.UK.

MIDSOMER NORTON STATION NEWS
S
pring has definitely sprung at Midsomer Norton South Station and the volunteers are ready for visitors. Our station shop, buffet coach and museum will be open on all running days. The closed winter season has seen a considerable amount of work at the Station with a large track re-laying project being completed on schedule, despite the ravages of Storm Eunice in early February and the continued inclement weather. Our signalling team has been busy with the next phase of the signalling restoration on the line, which will enable passenger trains to depart and arrive from the ‘Up’ platform later this season, for the first time in the station’s restoration era. The gardeners have been busy sprucing up the station gardens and preparing for the busy year ahead. 2022 will see a record number of operating days for the railway with more services than ever
before. A full season of steam and diesel trains is planned with many special events across the year. Along with our resident steam Sentinel locomotive, 7109 “Joyce”, our Wickham Trolley and our 03 and 08 diesels, we are pleased to have extended the stay of the steam locomotive, Kitson 5459 “Austin 1”, for 2022. We will also be welcoming a 2-car Class 107 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) which will offer a different perspective on the line with its view through the driver’s cab. We are pleased to be working with Midsomer Norton Town Council and the Midsomer Norton Community Trust to host one day of the town’s planned ‘Queen’s Platinum Jubilee’ events. More details will be made available in the coming weeks. It’s sure to be a great party, celebrating the Jubilee and the history of the station.
