Picnic Essentials for the Jubilee Weekend

If you’re planning to celebrate the Jubilee with a picnic or you want to get prepared for National Picnic Week (which starts on 1st July this year) here is everything you need to pack for a perfect picnic.

• Something to sit on Either bring a blanket or some fold out chairs if you don’t mind carrying them and you know you’ll have the space. It doesn’t need to be anything special, just something you can all comfortably sit on.

• Utensils, plates and cups In order to save on mess, make sure to pack some utensils, plates and cups. Make sure to go for bamboo or wooden knives and forks as these can be easily recycled if you don’t want to bring your kitchen cutlery. Paper plates can also be recycled as can paper cups – or even better, bring reusable bottles or flasks, just try to avoid plastics where possible!

• ice packs or thermos Keep food safe and tasty by adding some ice packs into your bag or for those of you who want a quick cup of tea, bring a thermos.

• a bottle opener If you’re planning a bit of a boozy picnic, perhaps for a special occasion, make sure to bring something to open your drinks! No one wants to be disappointed when they get to their location after all.

• bin bags If there aren’t any bins around where you can dispose of your litter, don’t leave it behind, bring some bags with you so you can take it home and dispose of it there. You can also use bin bags to put your used plates or cups in to save getting the inside of your picnic basket dirty.

• hand wipes Picnics will inevitably equal sticky hands, no matter how careful you are!

• picnic favourites Now you know what practical items you need in your basket, you just need the food and drink! Here are some of the UK’s favourite picnic items. Sandwiches Crisps Sausage Rolls Cherry tomatoes Cucumber slices Carrot sticks Pork pies Scotch Eggs Slices of cheese Bread sticks Cocktail sausages Hard boiled eggs Salad Cakes Fruit, like apples, strawberries and grapes
