MIDSOMER NORTON Illuminated Carnival – SHOW YOUR SUPPORT
I
t's not long until Midsomer Norton Illuminated Carnival returns to the town's streets on Monday the 13th of November. Once again, our carnival will bring some much-needed excitement to a cold winter night with the sounds, sights and lights that accompany our traditional annual event. Last year was our first carnival back after Covid-19 saw carnival go into hibernation for two years. This year, we wanted to make sure that Carnival was spectacular... A big challenge following the attendance of the Queen's Jubilee cart last year. We are pleased to confirm that this year, we have all our regular entries, a few new clubs and some returning clubs that haven't appeared in Midsomer Norton for several years attending.
As our Illuminated Carnival continues to grow, the existing team needs to focus more time on the Carnival procession and everything that goes into running one of the largest community events in the area. We’re a small voluntary group of all ages and backgrounds and we desperately need more help. This is why we chose not to hold a competition to find carnival royalty this year and we're grateful to our existing royal party for staying on for this event. We’re looking for someone to help organise the annual coronation of our Carnival Royalty. It’s a great opportunity to continue the Midsomer Norton Carnival Royalty tradition which dates back to our first carnival in 1948 and make it your own.

being part of the largest community event in the area with a proud heritage.
Donate – if you don’t want to join us then you can support us with a donation, every little really really does count and as we’re 100% voluntary, you‘ll know that every penny goes to charity.
And it's easy to donate, you can join our 50 Club, become a Patron, or just donate. It can all be done online via our website illuminatedcarnival.co.uk or just scan the QR code and of course, you can donate during our carnival parade. You don’t have to make a huge commitment to volunteer. You can work on it during your spare time at home and as well as a warm welcome, we’ll assist you as needed. Additionally, you’ll have the chance to make new friends and inspire the younger generation in our community. We would therefore like to reach out to the local community for help to keep it alive. Of course, carnival is just that, a community event run by members of our community to help raise funds for local charities and good causes and you can help.

SWALLOW CHARITY Focus on Employment
F
or many members of SWALLOW, the local charity supporting teenagers and adults with learning disabilities, having a job is their dream. They want to be able to work, to contribute to society and to feel valued. At SWALLOW Charity’s Work Skills Enterprise Scheme, people have the opportunity to gain valuable experience which can help them prepare for the world of work. In the craft sessions, they work as a team to produce wonderful cards and gifts. In horticulture, members learn how to grow vegetables and flowers, and elements of garden maintenance. At SWALLOW’s two Community Cafés in Radstock and Peasedown, our trainees learn catering skills, both in the kitchen and front of house. The teams work hard together to produce delicious food and drinks.
members a chance to prove what they can contribute. We have an employment support co-ordinator that can provide prospective employers with support, both before employment and ongoing. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact – Sam Williams at 01761 414 034 or by email Samwilliams@swallowcharity.org
SWALLOW also offers supported employment opportunities within the charity and we are asking other local employers to consider whether they could do the same. There are a number of SWALLOW members who would desperately like to share their skills and become valuable members of a local company’s workforce. We are asking local employers to consider giving SWALLOW

What is FixMyStreet?
F
ixMyStreet is a website for reporting things which are broken, dirty, damaged, dumped or need fixing, cleaning. or clearing, like graffeti, dog fouling, over grown rights of way or street lights that don't work. For problems that might put people in immediate danger, like gas leaks or falling trees, please contact your council or the appropriate utility company or emergency service directly – by phone if possible.
Is this a council website? No, it isn't – but FixMyStreet does send your reports direct to B&NES. They also publish them online, so that others in the community can read, discuss, and offer advice where needed.
Who are they?
Is there a FixMyStreet app? Yes – there's an app for iOS and Android If your phone isn't supported, try accessing FixMyStreet via your mobile browser.
FixMyStreet is an independent website, built by the charity mySociety. They wanted to make it easier to report problems in the community, even if you don't know who those reports should go to. All you have to do is type in a postcode – or let the site locate you automatically – and describe your problem. They then send your report to the people whose job it is to fix it.
How do I make a report?
FixMyStreet covers the whole of the UK. No matter where you are, the only thing you ever have to remember is the web address – FixMyStreet.com.
3. Check your email inbox for our confirmation mail, click on the link, and job done.
Do councils read or act on FixMyStreet reports? They certainly do. Reports sent through FixMyStreet go into the same B&NES council email inboxes as reports sent through by any other means. Really smart councils integrate directly, so we can place report details directly into their systems, saving them time and money.
1. Start at the homepage at www.fixmystreet.com and type in your postcode or a place name. Not sure where you are? Pick ‘use my location’. 2. Put the pin in the map to show exactly where the problem is, and type in a description of the issue. Then send.

The Bristol Avon Rivers Trust
T
he Bristol Avon Rivers Trust (BART) is preparing to deliver work to improve habitat for the critically endangered European Eel, Brown Trout, River Lamprey and other aquatic species on the Cam and Wellow Brooks in Somerset under a new grant awarded by Natural England. The project comes at a time when the river environment and the wildlife that live in it are coming under a sharper news spotlight in recent months. For example, the once common European Eel is now classified as critically endangered, with the number returning to European waters declining by as much as 95 % over the last forty years. Populations of trout, river lamprey and associated species have also suffered alongside the general health of our rivers.
To help achieve this, BART has been awarded £134,000 by the Natural England Species Recovery Programme to remove barriers currently stopping or delaying the migration of these species upstream from the Bristol Avon, via the Midford Brook, into these two Somerset brooks.
Due to this, local partners of the Bristol Avon Catchment Partnership (a grouping of the statutory and voluntary sector bodies concerned with the management of the Bristol Avon) have shown a desire to address the problem by publishing the Bristol Avon Fish Recovery Strategy, which has raised awareness of the necessity of reestablishing a healthy natural balance in our rivers. This project will help deliver the strategy within a sub-catchment identified as a priority to restore native fish populations.
Under their “Cam and Wellow Eel project”, BART seeks to address a number of challenges by providing safe passage for eels to overcome key barriers, thus allowing this migratory species to access habitat further upstream. This will be done by providing eel passes on larger weir structures, removing small weir obstructions and enhancing wetland habitat along the river. This work will benefit not only eels, but also other fish and aquatic species. The project will run for two years and on its completion will result in 9.5 km

of additional habitat for European eels to move into, of which 4.5km will also be accessible to fish, including brown trout and river/brook lamprey. 2 km of improved general river habitat work will also be undertaken. Before and after the interventions are carried out, the project will conduct fish eDNA surveys, giving the Trust a more complete picture of the species present and absent throughout the brooks. On hearing news of the successful grant application, Michael Thompson, Senior Project Manager at BART, said: “Nature recovery work, su ch as that planned on the Cam and Wellow Brooks, will benefit every single one of us. With the help of this generous support from Natural England’s Species Recovery Programme, visitors to these wonderful rivers will benefit from increased opportunities to experience nature returning, whilst healthier cleaner rivers will also help to tackle problems of flooding, drought and water pollution downstream. This work also links into a recently published Fish Recovery Strategy for the wider Bristol Avon (available from BART and the Bristol Avon Catchment Partnership), which shows how habitat improvements can be achieved elsewhere in the catchment. This covers possible works to improve the river environments stretching from Bristol’s floating harbour to, for example, the high wildlife potential tributaries of the Chew and Somerset Frome at Keynsham and Bath. Having iconic species such as trout and eels back in good numbers and in good health, will be a fantastic reward for the work that is being put in

by so many people to improve the health of our rivers and wider ecosystems.” The BART Cam and Wellow Eel project has been funded by Natural England under its Species Recovery Programme. Launched on 14th September, the Programme will offer grants totalling some £14m to help halt and reverse declines in populations of our most threatened species. The BART Cam and Wellow Eel project is one of sixty three projects that are being awarded grants under the two year programme to address issues effecting populations of rare species including, for example, the critically endangered European eel, Greater Mouse-eared bat; endangered Sand lizard, Atlantic salmon and Eurasian curlew, the vulnerable Pasqueflower, Grizzled skipper and Northern lapwing. • BART’s programmes and news updates are available at www.bristolavonriverstrust.org • Bristol Avon Fish Recovery Strategy can be found at www.bristolavoncatchment.co.uk/bristolavon-fish-recovery-strategy • More about Natural England’s Species Recovery Programme is available at www.naturalengland.blog.gov.uk/2023/09/14/ species-recovery-programme-capital-grantscheme-awards • For more information about the Cam and Wellow Eel Project please email: info@bristolavonriverstrust.org

Golden Eagle at the Somer Centre
N
orton Radstock u3a members are looking | forward to the Autumn and Winter Coffee Mornings, speaker meetings and to the extremely interesting schedule of speakers in the New Year. The speaker on 11th September was Wesley Murch who provided a fascinating talk about how he started and developed his Eagle and Falcon training. Towards the end of his talk, Wesley brought his Golden Eagle into the Somer Centre which created a huge amount of interest with members taking their own photos of the impressive bird. October's speaker was John Barkle with Memories of a Village Grocer and included his experiences as a grocer running stores in Pilton and Ditcheat. He also worked for 25 years in Wells. This talk invoked many memories and brought back happy times from the members' childhoods. Looking forward, the November presentations will be by the popular Tim Lewis, who will again entertain his audience with songs and readings about the preparations for Christmas, followed by a unique version of Jack and the Beanstalk!
The final talk of the year on 11th December will be given by Dinah Auton, who will entertain members with stories of the 54-year history of the costume collection of Bath Theatrical Costume Hire, including the shows and films they have been in and who has worn the items. There will be a few pieces of their vast collection on show for members to enjoy with original pieces for decades (centuries) gone by. The very popular u3a Christmas Coffee Morning will take place on Monday, 18th December with the usual mince pies and opportunity to hand out our Christmas cards with the usual seasonal members' chat. The u3a provides a wonderful opportunity for anyone who is no longer in full time employment to meet others and particularly anyone who is living on their own to share the company of others. New staff at Town Council
S
through the Council’s website and Social Media as they progress.”
The experience and guidance from Locum Town Clerk, Peter Finnis (taking over from the previous Locum in June) has been invaluable in directing the Council’s resources most effectively, utilising external HR consultants to quickly source top quality candidates for the Council to consider and managing the entire recruitment process.
The Council’s new Deputy Clerk, Kate Egan, joined Midsomer Norton Town Council at the beginning of August after gaining experience of working within Local Government over the past six years, mainly with parishes in Somerset Council and is interested in seeing how her experience can be carried over. Kate has the full suite of qualifications for a Local Council professional and is looking forward to working with the residents and Councillors of Midsomer Norton and getting to know the areas within the Town.
ince the turn of the year, Midsomer Norton Town Council’s first priority has been to establish a stable and effective staffing structure. This has now been achieved with the recruitment of two exceptional new members joining the team on a permanent basis.
Katie Mason, the new Town Clerk, is an experienced public administrator having served in the Royal Navy (2008-2022) as a Logistics Officer. She completed a Masters' in Public Administration (MPA) in July 2023 and is excited to take up the position of Town Clerk. Moving to Radstock in 2021, Katie previously lived for three years in Denmark, where she takes inspiration from the exceptional public services there. The new Town Clerk is looking forward to meeting local residents, and fully exploring the remit of the Town Council’s responsibilities. “You might see me cycling between Radstock and Midsomer Norton but I’ll also be available on Monday and Thursday afternoons at Unit 14 South Road, when the Town Council is open to the public, as well as at council meetings. Amongst a whole range of activities, I’m particularly excited about the Town Hall restoration and Somer Valley Rediscovered projects and I’ll be sharing updates
The new Clerk and Deputy join existing Council staff members, Jo Corbett, who has been with the Council for three years as the Administration and Finance Officer and Town Warden, Dave Paisey who has been on the team for five years. Delighted with the new appointments, Mayor of Midsomer Norton, Cllr Gordon Mackay, commented, “It’s fantastic to welcome Katie and Kate to the Town Council. With the turnover of staff and having local elections this year, it’s been a challenging time which, I’m delighted to say, has been coped with admirably. My greatest thanks to Jo for her hard work during this time and the two Locum Clerks, Paul Russell and Peter Finnis who have given such great service over these last nine months. “The Council is now in the most incredibly strong position going forward with the highest calibre staff to deliver results for the people of Midsomer Norton.”

Producers Somer Valley FM worked with local historians, Nick Waton and Monica Evans to curate the trail. Four brilliant local artists – Sharne Tasney, Samuel Lindup, Molly Mural and Jessica Smith – were tasked with using the benches as their canvases to create new temporary artworks on the High Street. Each of the works celebrates a different aspect of local history and culture. Read more about the artists and discover the bench locations at yourmidsomernorton.co.uk/ bench-trail/

News from the Station
W
e are delighted to announce the imminent arrival of our guest steam locomotive ‘Kilmersdon’. The R3 class loco worked from 1929, when it was delivered to Kilmersdon Colliery near Radstock, until 1973, when the pit closed and we are excited to welcome it ‘home’ to Somerset from its current location at The Watercress Line (by kind permission of its owners: The Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust). It's not long until Christmas, but the station is buzzing, as we’ve heard on the breeze that Santa is coming! Our Santa Specials will run every Saturday and Sunday throughout December, culminating on Friday, 22nd December and will again be steam-hauled by Kilmersdon. Come and ride the line in our beautifully decorated, steamheated carriages and then visit Santa in his grotto, where all children receive a small present. Adults receive a mince pie and hot festive drink (or cold alternative) while children receive a goody bag containing festive treats. Last year we were oversubscribed and tickets are already selling well, so book early and don’t miss out. We have decided, once again, to run quiet trains for those people with a sensory impairment. These will be the first train of the day on Sunday
3rd and 17th December. The carriages will be decorated but there will be no music. All trains are wheelchair friendly. Our final outing for this running season will be the Mince Pie Special on 1st January, where you will have the pleasure of riding behind our visiting steam engine. There will be mince pies for everyone (included in the price) and the buffet car will be open to purchase hot and cold drinks and a selection of snack items. It’s a lovely way to round off the year, though sadly, it will mark the departure of Kilmersdon, after which it returns to its base in Hampshire. We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has supported us through, what has

been, a challenging year. We have very much enjoyed your company and we hope you have enjoyed ours and will return again another time. We are entirely run by volunteers, to whom we must say an enormous thank you. They work tirelessly throughout the year to keep things going and provide services and events for our visitors. If you think this is something you might like to do, we are always looking for more volunteers. You don’t need to be technical or have any special skills, there are opportunities in lots of different areas and necessary training can be given. Pop in and have a chat or come along to one of our volunteer days if you are interested.

Lions Help restock curo pantry
R
adstock and Midsomer Norton Lions helped restock the Curo Pantry food bank which operates from Welton Vale Community Room on a Tuesday between 10am and 1.00pm. The food bank allows families and anyone in need to purchase bags of shopping for £3.00. Lions Margaret Burdon and Lyn Haile went out for a supermarket sweep and purchased £230.00 of goods to restock the pantry. Emma Newman, Curo Regional Customer Account Manager, and Jo Forrest, Curo Customer Account Manger, were delighted when the goods were dropped off as the pantry has, on occasions, run out of food and had to turn people away, which is heartbreaking. Lions are pleased to help out this hardworking team responding to local need.

2023 POPPY APPEAL
O
n the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the nation gathers together to show their respect to the fallen, (now on the closest Sunday following that date). The British Legion cannot help those who have lost their lives, but they do help the families of those who have given their life, and they can help those who have sustained injuries and health issues as a result of their service. To achieve this task, which is enormous, the British Legion need to find the money to fund the help given. The annual Poppy Appeal is the major fund-raising event which happens not only in the UK but also abroad from local Legion branches. Midsomer Norton, Radstock and the surrounding area have traditionally given so much to the cause and the Branch are indebted to the people of the region for the fantastic amounts raised in previous years. However, the local appeal is only ever as successful as their last appeal.
This year, the appeal starts on the 27 th October and ends on the 11 th November. The Branch will have unmanned poppy boxes in many of the shops and will also have manned collecting points at the Farmer’s Market, Lidl’s and Tesco’s. All the money raised, is used to support our troops, past and present and their families either directly or through rehabilitation centres.
Snowflakes falling, whispers white, Santa's sleigh in the silent night. Stockings hung with hopeful glee, Underneath the Christmas tree. Candy canes and gingerbread, Stories told as we're tucked in bed. Twinkling lights in every hue, Paint the sky in festive view. Elves at work with joy and mirth, Bringing gifts and heaps of merriment's birth. Reindeer hooves on rooftops tap, Guiding Santa's festive map. Little ones with eyes so wide, Dreams of sleds on hills to slide. Wishes sent to stars above, for peace and joy, wrapped in love. In cosy pyjamas, snug and tight, Awaiting the magical, wondrous night. For in the heart of every child, Christmas dreams are sweetly compiled.

Christmas Shopping
C
hristmas delights are already gracing the shelves, heralding the start of the festive season. Retailers are in a race to kick off the festivities earlier each year, and joining them on this sleigh ride might just be a savvy move! So, why should you contemplate starting your Christmas shopping well before the tree goes up? Let's unravel the reasons: 1. Chill and Shop: Ever found yourself stuck in massive queues or traffic jams just before Christmas? Starting early allows you to avoid the stress and stay ahead of the game. 2. Beat the Rush: That must-have toy or gadget that vanishes as Christmas approaches? Don't wait; go get it as soon as you know someone on your list desires something specific. Procrastination is not your friend! 3. Perfect Your List: Grab a hot chocolate (or mulled wine!) and begin jotting down your gift list. Who's on it, and what do they wish for? If you're drawing a blank, use this extra time for some stealthy detective work – ask people what they'd like. Waiting until Christmas Eve is a risky move! 4. Streamline Your Gift List: Get your act together quickly, and you might strike a deal with extended family and friends to skip gift exchanges or set a budget limit. It's not about being a Scrooge; it's about keeping your spending in check. Does everyone on your list really need a present? 5. Money-Saving Bonanza: Keep an eye out for deals like "3 for 2" and grab them while you can. While there are pre-Christmas bargains and online flash sales, some popular items might not be included. Seize the opportunity! 6. Finances in Harmony: December can be a financial strain with higher utility bills, increased
miles on the car, and heftier grocery bills. Starting your Christmas shopping early can soften the financial blow and make the season more budget-friendly. 7. Quality Control: It's better to deal with any hiccups in your purchases before Christmas Day. No one wants to witness the disappointment when a gift fails to work, especially when it involves battery-operated toys or electronic goodies for the kids. 8. More Holiday Magic: Christmas should be about relaxation and quality time with family. While a bit of holiday stress is unavoidable, doing your shopping early leaves you more room to savour the holiday magic.

Somer Valley Foodbank NEWs
S
omer Valley Foodbank has seen a large increase in the numbersof users. We have had at least 800 more clients compared to the same time last year. The main reasons are benefit delays and the cost of living crisis. We are seeing more and more people who are in work but cannot make their funds stretch to cover all the bills. This obviously has caused pressure on our stock levels and the warehouse is beginning to look empty. We have been able to acquire food from other foodbanks and make some bulk purchases from Tesco. Donations have reduced slightly but once again, the people in this area are still managing to support us, even though times are tough for everyone. We are hopeful of good donations during the Harvest season.
At the moment, the Midsomer Norton distribution centre team, operating from the Salvation Army Hall, are looking for new members to help distribute food to people holding vouchers from local agencies. Volunteers would be on duty once a month on Mondays from 11.30am to 2.00pm. Training will be given. For more details email info@somervalley.foodbank.org.uk or visit the website at www.somervalley.foodbank.org.uk As well as giving out food, the second element to our service is the chance to signpost clients to other services that can offer them additional help. We do this mainly via the Community Wellbeing Hub based in Peasedown. Clients are then contacted directly by an agency that can offer them help.
Looking forward, we are heading towards Christmas and hopefully generous donations that will help us to continue to help people in crisis into the next year. We will be holding our three day Tesco collection at the end of November and hopefully will receive the usual support from the
people of this area.

Norton Hill Primary School comes top of the class!
N
orton Hill Primary School has clinched the top spot in its Ofsted inspection, with a resounding 'Outstanding' rating across all areas. The inspection, conducted over two intensive days in late July, comprehensively scrutinised lessons, curriculum, interviewed staff and students and listened to parental perspectives.
the prospect of Norton Hill Primary shaping the future. Parents, an integral part of the school community, shared positive feedback during the evaluation. They lauded the "excellent" and "enthusiastic" training of staff in caring for children with additional educational needs and commended the "incredibly caring" approach to students' emotional well-being. One parent emphasised: "I genuinely believe Mrs. Waterhouse cares about my child's future."
This remarkable accomplishment is particularly noteworthy for Norton Hill Primary, a stillexpanding school catering to students from Reception to Year 3 since its beginnings with a lone Reception class in September 2020. The 'Outstanding' rating, the highest accolade attainable, is determined across five key areas: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision.
Looking ahead, Mrs. Waterhouse, her team, and students aspire to build on this success by advancing their 'STEAM' specialist curriculum, fostering connections with neighbouring schools, inviting outside speakers, engaging with community organisations, and enhancing their facilities. Plans include the creation of a wildlife pond to bolster the school's commitment to ecology, environmental awareness, and outdoor learning.
This impressive result puts Norton Hill Primary in the top 15% of schools in the country and few schools achieve the highest rating across all assessed categories. The inspection team commended the school's forward-thinking, creativity, and innovation, characterising the quality of learning and the children's understanding as 'exceptional' and surpassing their years. Mrs. Waterhouse was apprised that hers is "a school where everyone can flourish," with the inspectors expressing excitement about
