NORTH DEVON North Devon is best known for its beautiful coastlines and for being the home of the Exmoor National Park. Bordering Somerset, the national park features picturesque walks and is home to some of the earth’s oldest places – historians have dated some parts back 200 million years! With the highest coastline in Britain, there are no end of beautiful coastal walks around Exmoor and the surrounding areas and of course, you can while away the hours looking for the herds of Exmoor Ponies and feral goats! Outside of the National Park, the North Devon coast is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country, in fact the whole area is part of the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers perfect surfing conditions – no wonder it is the surfing capital of the UK! While in the region, make sure to glance out to sea and take in Lundy Island, where you’ll find one of the largest populations of puffins in the south west. Or visit the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere in Braunton.

MID-DEVON Mid-Devon is the perfect base for exploring the whole region as you are equidistance from the National Parks, the countryside, and the coast. Mid-Devon is full of surprises and beautiful rural retreats without being too remote. This part of Devon is well known for its rolling hills, rivers, valleys and woodland making it a great location for a walking or cycling holiday or for anyone hoping to spy some of Britain’s wildlife while away.

Mid-Devon is a diverse place to visit, offering everything from city centre excitements and tranquil hideaways. The beauty of the natural environment is well complimented with its cultural heritage, with strong links to the wool and lace trade – much of which is still evident. The region is full of wonderful accommodation options from friendly B&Bs to cosy cottages and country hotels set on sprawling estates. Parts of Mid-Devon border the Dartmoor National Park where you can find some of Devon’s top foodie destinations and some of the region’s spookiest stories.

WATERMOUTH LODGES

WOODLAND ESCAPES

Nestled in mature woodland in an elevated spot above Watermouth Harbour on the edge of the South West Coast path, the very best of North Devon is waiting at Park Life Resorts, Watermouth Lodges

EAST DEVON Characterised by the Jurassic Coast which stretches through East Devon and into the neighbouring county of Dorset, this is one of the most geologically important places in the UK. Enjoy beautiful coastal walks and incredible views of those iconic red cliffs, plus some of Devon’s oldest traditions, which still take place in this region. Among them is the annual Bonfire Night event in Ottery St Mary that sees residents running through the streets carrying burning Tar Barrels, the throwing of hot pennies and something called Pixie Day – where local children round up the adults in a re-enactment of the day that pixies were banished from the area! East Devon is arguably one of the most attractive places in the South West, the majority of the region is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Jurassic Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is without doubt one of the most ecologically interesting places in the UK and a truly fascinating place to visit, whether you want to spend a day at the beach or explore the countryside.

SOUTH DEVON Home to Britain’s Ocean City, Plymouth, the birthplace of the navy and the ever popular English Riviera, South Devon is full of beautiful beaches, culture and history. You’ll also find the Dartmoor National Park here with its famous ponies and ancient myths and legends.

FOOD & DRINK

DEVON DELICACIES THE DEVONSHIRE CREAM TEA The quintessential treat when in Devon – just make sure to do it the right way! (Cream first!) To make it really special, look out for the places serving a cream tea with a Devonshire Split rather than a scone, these traditional sweet buns are delightful! Cream teas have been a part of Devon life for hundreds of years – in fact there is evidence that the tradition was even done back in the 11th Century among the monks at Tavistock Abbey! The monks served their cream teas with bread rather than scones and by the 16th century, it was more common to see a cream tea with a Devonshire Split or a more recognisable scone.

There is some debate on the best way to eat a cream tea, our friends over the border say that you are supposed to put the jam first but for the real Devon experience, make sure to go cream first. It is the best way after all!

Being eco friendly doesn’t mean you need to compromise on the fun! Whether you want something action packed or a relaxing weekend, there are plenty of ways you can enjoy yourselves without negatively impacting the environment. Here in Devon we have two national parks, several Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sites of Scientific Interest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and miles of beautiful coastline and it’s important to preserve it all, so we can enjoy it for years to come! This is why so many people are turning to eco tourism and why we have so many eco friendly places to stay, visit and eat all over the county, so you can enjoy yourself without feeling guilty. Many businesses only use local, sustainable products, including locally sourced food and drink and have removed single use plastics from their sites. These are just a few of the innovative ways that businesses are cutting down their carbon footprints, find more eco friendly establishments at visitdevon.co.uk/explore/eco-friendly-devon

HISTORY & HERITAGE

DEVON’S PIRATES Like most places on Britain’s coast, Devon was plagued by pirates and smugglers during the time known as the Golden Age of Piracy. Lundy Island which is just off the coast of North Devon was even commandeered and ruled by a Pirate King! You can find out more about Devon’s pirate history by visiting during the Pirate Festival which takes place in Brixham or by heading to the museum in Appledore.

THE ACTUAL QUEEN Did you know that Queen Victoria lived in Devon for a time? As an infant, her parents moved to Sidmouth in East Devon. The home they stayed in is still there, it is in fact now a hotel, so you too can live like a royal!

DID YOU KNOW...? Some of the world’s most well known pirates and privateers lived in Devon. Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh both had homes in the county!

DEVON AND WORLD WAR II Devon played an important role in the Second World War. It was home to a number of training camps for American soldiers and was where rehearsals for the D Day landing took place. You can visit a memorial for the operation, known as Operation Tiger, at Slapton Sands and Torcross Sands in South Devon where a Sherman tank marks the site.

One of Devon’s most famous residents was the crime writer Agatha Christie who was born in Torquay. There are a number of sites across the town that have connections to Christie and her family, including a bust of her that can be found near the harbour, her former holiday home is now managed by the National Trust and is located in the English Riviera and you can find references to places around Devon in her novels. For instance, And Then There Were None was inspired by Burgh Island in South Devon.

DEVON’S DARKER SIDE

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Much of Devon’s heritage is based in the region’s myths and legends, many of which originated on Dartmoor. With stories of everything from witches to giants to pixies and a pack of rabid dogs that traverse the moor there is plenty to inspire. In fact, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used one of the moor’s most famous myths as inspiration for the Hound of the Baskervilles! TRADITIONAL DEVON EVENTS

WHAT'S ON

Devonians are a stickler for tradition which is why some of our most popular events have been taking place for centuries! Tavistock Goose Fair for instance dates back to the 12th century while Tar Barrel Rolling has been taking place on 5th November in Ottery St Mary for hundreds of years. The West Country has a history of torchlit processions to commemorate the Gun Powder Plot, but only the residents of Ottery St Mary actually carry full sized, flaming tar barrels through the streets. Make sure to check the website for all the latest events: visitdevon.co.uk/whats-on

Devon is a haven of quirky West Country traditions, it isn’t just Tar Barrel Rolling that can still be seen – here are some of the weird and wonderful traditions you can find in Devon…

POT WALLOPING

WORM CHARMING FESTIVAL

This event dates back to the 19th century and features the locals throwing pebbles that have fallen from the ridge during winter. It takes place over three days and these days includes stalls and live entertainment.

As the name suggests, the aim is to catch as many worms as possible. Participants work in teams consisting of a Catcher, a Charmer and a Counter who have to work together to charm worms from the ground and catch them. Of course they are returned to the ground afterwards.

May, Westward Ho!

HUNTING THE EARL OF RONE May, Combe Martin

Historic houses, castles & gardens

Breathtaking views & stunning starscapes

Wellbeing retreats & golf and fishing

This annual celebration involves the search and capture of an imaginary person called the Earl of Rone. No one really knows where the tradition came from, but it is based on the true story of an Irish nobleman who was forced to flee his home and shipwrecked in Combe Martin. The event lasts several days and includes a parade of Grenadiers, the hunt and then a donkey parade. To finish, an effigy of the earl is carried to the beach at sunset and thrown into the sea.

May, Blackawton

PIXIE DAY

June, Ottery St Mary Every June in Ottery St Mary the locals celebrate an old folk story where the pixies of the town were banished to the local caves. The town’s children round up the adults as part of a reenactment and send them to the Pixie Parlour (aka the caves).

Myths &Legends Dartmoor has a long history of myths and legends, including ghostly goings on, pixies, witches, giants and more! The moor has a dramatic atmosphere with thick mist, stone circles and the cries of birds, all inspiring stories that have lasted through the generations.

HERE’S SOME OF THE SPOOKIEST TALES FROM THE MOOR THE GHOST OF SIR FRANCIS DRAKE The ghost of Sir Francis Drake is said to continue to haunt his former home at Buckland Abbey after being doomed to remain there forever as punishment for making a pact with the devil to ensure the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Apparently, you can see him making his nightly ghostly journey across Dartmoor towards Plymouth in a black coach drawn by a headless horse. If that wasn’t spooky enough, there are a

series of tunnels underneath the Abbey which connects to the village where you can find all kinds of sprites and spirits.

THE DEWERSTONE The large granite outcrop stands over 100 meters high and can be visited to this day. The outcrop is named after the devil who used to terrorise the moor at night with his pack of hell hounds who would chase travellers up and over the stone.

An RHS Partner Garden, with spectacular woodland & water gardens on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Famous for its National Collection of Birch and Alder, enchanting and inspiring in every season. Open all year round. 10am - 6pm everyday. www.stonelanegardens.com

There is a fairly modern local legend that claims that one night, a group of young men enjoying a night out in Dartmoor’s pubs accepted a challenge to visit the pool on Midsummer’s Eve. When Midsummer’s Eve rolled around, they headed up to Cramber Tor on a motorcycle, but no one knows who they saw in the pool as they both died on their way home.

THE LEGEND OF THE HAIRY HANDS

Meeting Rooms Video Conferencing

It is said that a pair of ghostly hairy hands appear on a stretch of road between Postbridge and Two Bridges that force you off the road. What’s scary is that stories of the hands have appeared for longer than there have been cars on the road and the stretch was avoided even before driving was commonplace.

KITTY JAY’S GRAVE Perhaps one of the creepiest stories is that of Kitty Jay’s Grave. You can find the grave near Natsworthy and the story goes that Kitty was a local farm worker who became pregnant out of wedlock. Her lover rejected her, resulting in her taking her own life. Back then, those that died in this manner were not allowed to be buried on hallowed ground and in order to confuse their spirits were buried at crossroads to prevent hauntings. The grave can be seen at the top of Green Lane and is instantly recognisable because to this day, fresh flowers appear on it – though no one has ever admitted to placing them there.

DID YOU KNOW...? The last witches to be tried in the UK were executed in Exeter.
