INTRODUCING DEVON
Each area of Devon has its own charm and beauty – to help you decide where to start your adventure, here’s what you can expect from around the county. South Devon The southern end of Devon is a popular holiday spot, particularly the English Riviera, which has been a staple for families looking for seaside resorts for generations. The region is full of activities and attractions and has great road and rail links, as well as being relatively close to the county’s airport. As well as having a reputation for incredible holiday destinations, South Devon features along the South West Coast Path and its National Landscapes (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty) stretch over 130 miles – all of that and we haven’t even mentioned the Global Geopark, the watersport opportunities or the famous fish markets.
This area of Devon is where you’ll find Britain’s Ocean City, Plymouth, the birthplace of the Navy and where the Mayflower embarked on its voyage to the New World.

Visit Plymouth
Mid Devon Home to the county’s capital, Exeter, Mid Devon is the place to be for those of you who like exploring and those looking for a rural retreat. Wherever you settle in Mid Devon, you’ll be well placed for visiting the north and south coasts, as well as the National Parks, Exmoor and Dartmoor. This part of Devon is perfect for anyone wanting a walking holiday, it’s famous for its rolling hills, valleys and woodlands and with its host of charming, historical market towns, you can really live like a local here.
East Devon Famous for the Jurassic Coast, which stretches through East Devon and neighbouring Dorset, East Devon is one of the most geologically interesting places in the UK and is arguably one of the most attractive places in the South West. Not only is it a designated Natural Landscape (AONB), home to a host of nature reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, but the Jurassic Coast is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This whole region is known for its beautiful walks and for continuing to practice traditional events, like Ottery St Mary’s Tar Barrels, an annual event where residents run through the streets carrying burning tar barrels, as part of their Bonfire Night celebrations.

West Devon Featuring areas of the Dartmoor National Park, another Natural Landscape (AONB) and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this is a great destination for history fans. This area of Devon is full of museums, independent shops and a host of adventure activities.

Devon is full of things to do from theme parks to zoos and just about everything in between. Whether you want something adventurous or relaxing, you can find a host of suggestions to suit every age, ability, budget and interest.
There are a host of activities available in Devon for you to enjoy during your trip. Discover the great outdoors with a wide range of watersports, cycling, adventure sports, walking, climbing, fishing, riding, golfing and a whole lot more.

Whether you want to challenge yourself on a rocky hike, a leisurely stroll along the South West Coast Path or explore Exmoor or Dartmoor on foot, you’ll find a network of pathways all over Devon. One of the best things about going for a walk or a hike in Devon is combining your day out with a hearty meal at one of the region’s pubs or restaurants. Some of the most popular routes are along the South West Coast Path, which covers most of the coastline, the Tarka Trail in North Devon, the East Devon Way and the Two Moors Way, which connects Dartmoor and Exmoor. Many of Devon’s walking routes are suitable for all abilities, with several routes designated as accessible and ideal for dog walks or days out with children in pushchairs. You can also find a host of routes from Miles without Stiles, an organisation promoting accessible routes across Dartmoor.

Watersports in Devon
There are nearly 150 miles of the National Cycle Network in Devon, so whether you want a coastal, moorland, or rural ride, you’ll find something for you with routes covering everything from 3 to 30 miles.
From rafting and kayaking on the Tamar or the River Dart to surfing in the UK Surf Reserve which covers the North Devon coastline, there are plenty of opportunities to get out on the waves while in Devon.
The Exe Estuary Trail follows the River Exe, in South Devon, while the Tarka Trail gives you a chance to explore North Devon.
For those of you who want to enjoy a spot of surfing, North Devon is always a good bet, places like Croyde Bay and Woolacombe are great for beginners, while the coast at Lynmouth is a good option for those with a bit more experience. It is one of the only places where you’ll find point break, a wave that breaks along the headland – not sure you’re quite ready for the sea? You can also enjoy watersports at a range of activity centres across the county. Look out for organisations at all of Devon’s seaside resorts where you’ll be able to borrow equipment and join in instructor-led sessions, some of the most popular places to find these businesses are in the English Riviera, the North Devon coast and on the Jurassic Coast. Devon has a host of zoos, farm attractions and aquariums where you can learn more about the natural world, make friends with the animals and even get married! There are zoos located on both National Parks, as well as in places like Paignton, while there are aquariums in Plymouth and Ilfracombe. Go rockpooling Rockpooling is a nostalgic pastime that can still help you while away the hours without breaking the bank. All you need is a net and a bucket! Head to one of the rockier beaches, like Combe Martin in North Devon or the beaches along the Jurassic Coast. Just remember to put everyone back where you found them!
Go birdwatching No matter the season, you’ll always find something new when birdwatching in Devon and it won’t cost you anything at all! Whether you’re a pro twitcher or not, there are loads of bird species to spot. With a host of nature reserves to choose from, like Seaton Wetlands or Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, you can spend as much or as a little time as you like exploring. Alternatively, head to Exmoor, Dartmoor or look out towards Lundy Island to see sea birds, birds of prey and even puffins.
Visit a museum Several of Devon’s museums are free to visit and have a rotating programme of exhibits to explore, so no two visits are the same. Some of the region’s biggest museums can be found in Exeter and Plymouth, and these, along with those in smaller towns and villages are a great option for a day out.
Go pony spotting Devon is home to two distinct breeds of wild pony. Dartmoor Ponies and Exmoor Ponies can be found roaming on the National Parks and are an iconic sight. Head out and see how many you can find, just remember, they are wild animals, so don’t approach them or try to feed them and if you see one in trouble, report it to one of the park’s visitor centres.

Great Torrington is a friendly, welcoming, historical market town. Built on the site of an ancient settlement and surrounded on three sides by 365 acres of varied and beautiful Common land. It enjoys spectacular views across unspoilt green countryside which offers plenty of walks and with links to the Tarka Trail, excellent cycling opportunities. The town centre is full of interesting independent shops, offering unique items, often made by local people and boasts a vibrant and unique multi-use arts centre, The Plough. Larger visitor attractions include Dartington Crystal and beautiful gardens at RHS Rosemoor. Great Torrington’s fascinating history dating back to the Bronze Age can be explored further through self-guided walking tours of the town centre: Learn about the town’s pivotal place in the English Civil War and follow in the footsteps of Henry VIII’s grandmother and Cardinal Wolsey, amongst others.

Blue Flag Beaches As of 2023 Devon has fourteen Blue Flag Beaches. The Blue Flag is one of the world’s best recognised awards for beaches and in order to receive one, the beach in question must reach a series of environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria. It’s been a leading award to indicate the quality of the world’s beaches since 1987 and aims to encourage local authorities to invest in environmental and safety programmes to help make beaches the best that they can be. The criteria includes:
Environmental, education and information Beaches must offer a minimum of five environmental education activities; display information about water quality and information about that region’s coastal ecosystem.
Safety and facilities Beaches should have lifeguards and lifesaving equipment on hand, with first aid equipment easily accessible. Other safety features include maps of nearby facilities, which should be displayed where they can be seen, the area should have a supply of drinking water and accessible toilet facilities.

Accessible places to stay There are a host of accommodation options across Devon that have adapted rooms, wider doorframes, adapted beds, hoists and wetrooms, so they can be used by wheelchair users. Other places are purpose built for guests with additional needs and will feature lowered sinks, contrasting floors and walls and easy to use light switches and taps. There are a number of properties in the region that have won awards for their accessibility and are particularly known for being autism and dementia friendly.
Accessible things to do All across Devon you’ll find things to do with accessibility in mind. From theme parks to surfing instruction, everyone is working to make sure they are as accessible as possible, so everyone can enjoy themselves and make memories to last a lifetime. On Dartmoor, you’ll find rock climbing sessions that are suitable for all ages and abilities, as well as designated accessible routes as part of the Miles without Stiles campaign.
At the coast, you’ll find several beaches that are accessible, especially in places like Seaton, who have a purpose built, level cover which helps those in wheelchairs and with mobility aids reach the seafront. Attractions across Devon offer a range of facilities, from quiet rooms to BSL guides.
Miles without Stiles Miles without Stiles is a national initiative which has created a number of stile free and accessible routes across National Parks, including Dartmoor. On Dartmoor, all the Miles without Stiles routes are suitable for a wide range of users, including those in all terrain powered mobility scooters and are rated with a series of gradings, like Suitable for Some, Suitable for Many or Suitable for All, and are regularly checked for their accessibility.

Accessible beaches Saunton Sands, North Devon Saunton Sands Beach can be accessed via a sand covered concrete ramp, which allows for easy access onto the beach itself. There is a car park which features designated disabled parking spaces near the entrance of the barrier and attendants on hand, should these spaces be full, to direct you to others that would be suitable for your needs. The beach shop has a selection of beach wheelchairs and all terrain wheelchairs that are available for hire. These need to be booked in advance and are suitable for adults and children. Seaton, East Devon Seaton Beach was the site of a trial for a project which saw a platform fitted on the beach to allow wheelchair users and those with mobility issues to more easily access the beach. The beach’s car park features designated Blue Badge parking, has lifeguards on duty and has disabled toilet facilities close to the beach.

Blackpool Sands, South Devon Blackpool Sands has ramped access down to the beach itself, as well as a wheelchair friendly promenade area. The car park has designated Blue Badge parking and there are disabled toilet facilities and exceptions for assistance dogs all year around. Croyde Bay, North Devon Croyde Bay is a popular beach, especially for surfers and we recommend accessing the beach from the car park at the northern end. There is a sloping path that is suitable for wheelchairs down towards the sand and this car park also has designated disabled parking. The beach is serviced by lifeguards and there are disabled toilet facilities, including a nearby Changing Places toilet. Many of Devon’s beaches have beach wheelchairs available to hire and disabled bathroom facilities. Elsewhere in Devon, the county is serviced by Countryside Mobility, who have trampers and all terrain wheelchairs and mobility scooters to explore some of the wilder areas and Shop Mobility, who are on hand to help you in some of the more built up areas. Additionally, some attractions have their own mobility aids, hearing induction loops and audio guides available for visitors to use.

The majority of visitors to Devon are responsible dog owners but it can be easy for your dog to forget their manners when they are somewhere new. To make sure that everyone – your dog included! – has a great time while in Devon, here are some ways you can be a responsible dog owner. • Keep a lead with you - dogs should be kept on a lead while in car parks and church yards, so make sure to have it on you at all times. You may also notice signs asking for dogs to be on leads in certain areas where there is conservation work or farmland to help protect wildlife.

• Make sure they are tagged or wear a collar - It is your legal duty to ensure that dogs have an external tag or collar with your name and contact details on. Any dogs without can be claimed as a stray and it is always easier to reunite if they have a collar than if whoever finds them has to track down a vet to read the microchip! • Clean up after them - Did you know it is an offence not to clean up after your dog? Make sure to have bags with you at all times just in case. You’ll find bins marked for dog’s mess in towns and villages and be aware that you are required to pick up any dog mess on all land open to the air which the public has access to. • Follow all signage Make sure to follow any instructions you might come across – this is for your dog’s safety as much as it is for other people’s enjoyment!

You’ll also be able to hear the calls of woodpeckers and the hoots of owls, as well as other woodland song birds.

Devon’s rivers and estuaries are crucial lifelines for much of the county’s wildlife The River Otter in East Devon has become famous for its resident otter and beaver populations, both a result of conservation projects. Otters, despite the name of the river, were at one time quite rare, but now they are frequently seen playfully making their way around the waterways. Devon’s riverbanks are also home to water voles, kingfishers and other wading birds providing a diverse array of bird and animal life to find. Both of Devon’s coastlines are dynamic environments too with a wealth of marine life. In warmer weather you can often see seals basking and bobbing along in the water. Just off the coast of North Devon, you’ll find Lundy Island which is a designated Marine Conservation Zone, it has a thriving seal colony as well as being home to the South West’s largest puffin population. Dolphins and porpoises are frequent visitors to Devon’s waters and the cliffs around the county provide nesting sites for a variety of seabirds, including guillemots and razorbills – it’s a true paradise for birdwatchers! Devon’s commitment to marine conservation doesn’t just include the animals, it extends to the seagrass beds which are a vital ecosystem for fish and seahorses. These underwater meadows contribute to the health of the marine environment and in turn, keep the region’s landscapes healthy too.

HISTORY AND HERITAGE Graziella
Devon is an incredibly old county, in fact the oldest human remains in the UK were found here! You’ll find evidence of the Celtic tribes that roamed the land before the Roman invasion, forts and buildings that date back to the Iron Age and the Medieval period and even connections to the English Civil War. Some of the buildings that are still in use now were used as bases for Oliver Cromwell and his forces! Everywhere you look, you’ll find evidence of the region’s history and heritage in Devon.

Our county’s great seafaring history is well known and has greatly influenced its culture. Many famous historical figures feature in Devon’s past including Sir Francis Drake, Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Walter Raleigh. You can find out more about the region’s maritime history all along the coast, but particularly in places like Appledore in North Devon and Plymouth in South Devon.

Other visitors from America are descended from the GIs that made Devon home during WWII. There were a number of American barracks and training camps here, especially in North Devon.
The Mayflower, the ship which took pilgrims to the New World to create settlements which would later become North America, left from Plymouth on 16th September 1620. The families onboard became known as the Pilgrims and were the first settlers, founding many of the modern communities we now know. 403 years later and you can find the evidence of the huge impact that the Mayflower voyage made all over Plymouth. Visitors from America can find a granite block marking the ship’s name in the Barbican area of Plymouth. Coming to Devon to trace your ancestry? Plymouth is a great place to start, especially if you can follow your family back to the original pilgrims that set off from Plymouth. Devon’s pirate history At one time the South West was plagued by pirates, but piracy was at its peak during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Lundy Island, just off the North Devon coast was perfectly placed for local pirates attacking ships travelling around the Bristol Channel. The island was even ruled by a pirate king at one point!

Devon’s royal connections Did you know an actual queen once lived in Devon? Queen Victoria lived in Sidmouth, which is in East Devon. Devon’s wartime connections Devon has played a strategically important part in conflicts throughout British history, from the English Civil War through to WWII.
The English Civil War was a series of battles that took place across the UK between the King and Parliament, which eventually saw victory for parliament and resulted in the temporary abolition of the monarchy. The majority of Devon declared for the King, with landowners forcing their tenants to join their campaigns. Some smaller industrial places, like Chagford, supported the Parliamentarians, which was one of the catalysts for the Battle of Sourton Down on the outskirts of Oakhampton.

As the fighting got more intense, members of the royal family tried to flee to France, including King Charles I’s wife, who was heavily pregnant at the time. She made it as far as Exeter, which was a royalist stronghold, where she gave birth and evaded a Parliamentarian plan to capture her and hold her ransom. Before she had even recovered from the labour, she was smuggled out and made it to France. Important battles took place at various places, including Plymouth, Exeter, Torrington and Dartmouth. Some of the headquarters from the Civil War can still be seen across Devon, particularly in Okehampton and Dartmoor, many of them are now used as hotels.

Later, William of Orange, who led the Glorious Revolution against James II of England landed in Brixham and made his way up country, gaining supporters along the way.
Along the coast, several beacons and outposts that are still there today were erected in case of invasion. Those bases were used again in WWII, becoming pillboxes, many routes along the South West Coast Path feature former pillboxes. You can recognise pillboxes by their distinct shape, they are often squat, concrete fort like buildings, in North Devon you can also find remains of former barracks and in South Devon, at Torcross, a Sherman Tank stands as a reminder of Devon’s contribution to WWII.

As you would expect from a coastal location, Devon was of strategic significance in both World Wars. During WWI, Devon was home to several Belgian refugees. Agatha Christie, who was born in Torquay, worked as a nurse during the war and tended to those that arrived from Europe, even taking inspiration from them to create her most famous character, Hercule Poirot.

One major incident during WWII was Exercise Tiger, which was a rehearsal for D Day. The incident ended up having greater fatalities than the actual Normandy Invasion and took place at Slapton Sands on 28th April 1944. The exercise was understandably vital, so commanders used live naval and artillery ammunition to make it as real as possible. However, a group of German E Boats approached to investigate the heavy use of radios and attacked. Memorials for Exercise Tiger can be found at Slapton Sands.
When you think of 1940s Britain, you likely think of the London Blitz and evacuees heading to the countryside, but did you know that Devon was actually a hive of activity during WWII? Not only did the county welcome evacuees but it was also home to a number of Jewish refugees escaping Europe and American GIs who undertook training exercises in the county. Evacuees touched the majority of people in Devon’s towns and villages, they were not just from places from London either, children from Plymouth and Exeter were also rehoused elsewhere in Devon.
Did you know Devon was also home to several Prisoner of War camps? There were a number of Italian prisoners located in the camp at Holsworthy, with German prisoners joining them in late 1944. If you head to Holsworthy and visit the Church of St Peter, you’ll find hand painted stained glass windows which was made by Italian POWs and crucifixes carved by German POWs.
It was the arrival of the GIs that saw Devon become a more strategic training area. Torquay became the main training wing of the RAF, while North Devon was a US Assault Training Centre, with barracks being assembled in Ilfracombe and Hele Bay and Braunton Burrows and Woolacombe becoming training grounds.

The Budleigh Literature Festival proudly boasts the late Dame Hilary Mantel as its famous patron. Mantel, acclaimed for her award-winning novels, including the Wolf Hall trilogy, spent significant time living in Devon, contributing to the region’s literary vibrancy.
Devon’s captivating landscapes and enduring allure have been a source of inspiration for numerous esteemed authors, intricately weaving the county into the literary fabric of England. Agatha Christie, celebrated as the Queen of Crime and one of the world’s best-selling authors, was born in Torquay and drew inspiration from the surrounding coast and countryside. You’ll find reference to places around Devon, including Burgh Island, in her novels. The literary legacy of Devon further unfolds with the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who was born in Ottery St Mary and spent many years in North Devon. The rugged coasts and rolling hills became a muse for Coleridge’s evocative verses, including his masterpiece, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” Perhaps the most famous Sherlock Holmes story, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” was inspired by the wilds of Dartmoor. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle spent some time in the region and took inspiration from some local tales. Whilst Rudyard Kipling, who attended school in Westward Ho!, left his mark on the region, with many of his cherished spots now integral to the popular walking route, Kipling Tor.

Dartmoor is a hotspot for mythical stories. The notorious “Hound of Dartmoor” is perhaps one of the most enduring legends. It is said that a phantom black dog haunts the moors, its eerie howls and ominous presence striking fear into those who encounter it. This spectral canine is believed by some to be a harbinger of doom, while others see it as a guardian spirit. The Pixies, mischievous supernatural beings with a penchant for pranks, are another integral part of Devon’s mythology. Legends tell of these tiny, winged creatures inhabiting the secluded corners of Dartmoor and delighting in leading travellers astray with their enchanting music. Wistman’s Wood, an ancient woodland on Dartmoor, is shrouded in myth. The twisted, moss-covered trees evoke an otherworldly atmosphere, believed by some to be a meeting place for supernatural beings. Local lore suggests that the Wild Hunt, a spectral procession of ghostly riders, can be witnessed charging through the night skies above Dartmoor, led by a mythical figure, such as the Devil or a legendary hunter.

TRAVELLING TO DEVON Devon is well served by trains from all over the country with some very picturesque routes, and is linked by major roads and has an airport accepting both international and domestic flights.
So, whether you are visiting from elsewhere in the UK or coming from further afield, you can easily reach your Devon destination.
Travel by car The M5 runs into Exeter and there are links to other major motorways including the M4 which connects the south west with London and beyond. Major A roads joining the M5 include the North Devon Link Road (A361) which serves North Devon from Junction 27, the A30 which serves the west of the county from Junction 31 and the A38 to Plymouth. There is also the A380 which will take you to the Torbay area from Junction 31. The M25/ M3 onto the A303 and A30, link Devon to the south and east of England.
Travel by coach and bus Devon is serviced by national coach services with main stops in Exeter, Tiverton, Plymouth, Bideford, Barnstaple, Westward Ho! and Ilfracombe. The county also has a local bus network with routes that include popular attractions and facilities such as train stations and shopping centres.
