A Little further afield Sidmouth is a lot closer than you think, Exeter, one of Devon’s largest cities is just half an hour by road and many of Devon and Dorset’s favourite tourist spots are just a stone’s throw from the town centre.
Budleigh Salterton Beautifully rural with a 2 mile long pebble beach and access to the Jurassic Coastline, Budleigh Salterton can be found in East Devon. The town has a varied range of shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs catering for every taste and its centre features a gentle brook flowing through it. It is one of Devon’s most unspoilt and charming towns and makes a delightful destination for a day trip. The town is famous for its literary festival, which is held every year and was founded by bestselling author, Hilary Mantel.

56 - visitsidmouth.co.uk Lyme Regis Arguably the most famous of the towns along the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis is the place to go for fossil hunters. The town’s dinosaur and fossil museum can be found in the former home of Mary Anning, Dorset’s most famous fossil hunter and geologist. With a variety of beaches to suit everyone’s taste within easy reach of the town centre, Lyme Regis provides a safe place to build sand castles and search out a few fossils of your own, here you’ll find fabulous coastal walks, independent shops, plenty of regular events and a foodie haven. Seaton Located within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and nestled between the cliffs of Beer and the area of Nature Reserves between Axmouth and Lyme Regis, Seaton has World Heritage Status. You can find out more about the region’s history and the town’s culture by visiting Seaton Tramway, Seaton Jurassic and Seaton Wetlands, all of which are incredibly popular with visitors to the region. Exeter The capital of Devon, Exeter is one of the county’s two cities and can be found right in its heart. It is a great place for those that love being outside without compromising on the hustle and bustle of a city. Full of culture, events and a vibrant night life, Exeter is just a half hour journey by car from Sidmouth. The historic quayside is one of the most picturesque places in the city and alongside Princesshay and the high street, is a hub of pubs, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. Exeter Cathedral Having stood in the centre of Exeter for over 1000 years, the historic cathedral and its gardens are one of Devon’s must visit attractions – it is one of the oldest and most beautiful cathedrals in England and is open for tours and quiet reflection. Guided tours can be joined outside the cathedral, with options to go around the building itself, the roofs – where you have an uninterrupted view of Exeter and beyond – or a city wide tour which includes its rich history and stories of the underground tunnels. Alternatively, explore on your own and spend sunny days in the cathedral gardens.

visitsidmouth.co.uk - 57 Exmouth Marking the start of the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, Exmouth is one of Devon’s oldest and prettiest seaside resorts. The town has plenty to see and do all year around, especially for those that love the beach and getting out on the waves. Being on the coast, it is no surprise that the town is famous for its food festivals, especially the annual Exmouth Mussel Festival where you can pick up the freshest seafood. Ladram Bay On the outskirts of Sidmouth, Otterton and Budleigh Salterton is this beautiful bay within easy reach of some of Devon’s top attractions and walking routes. There is a wonderful walking and cycling route from Ladram Bay to Sidmouth sea front which is especially popular with families. The bay itself is secluded and gives the impression of a private beach, it is instantly recognisable due to the natural cliffs and sea stacks which are made up of local sandstone. Branscombe Believed to be Britain’s longest village, Branscombe can be found between Seaton and Sidmouth and is a picturesque village full of thatched cottages and colourful buildings that stretch down towards the sea. A number of National Trust properties can be found in and around the village, allowing you to enjoy a taste of the past, while the South West Coast Path and the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty allow you to easily walk between the village and its neighbours: Beer, Sidmouth and Seaton. Fossils The Jurassic Coast and the towns and villages along it are the place to be for fossil hunters. Beginners would be best off visiting Lyme Regis or Charmouth where there are plenty of rock pools and chances to see fossils, renowned fossil finder, Mary Anning would search these beaches to add to her collection and there are still plenty to find here. As many of the beaches along the Jurassic Coast have a strict no fossil collecting policy, the best place to see the region’s fossils is at one of the many museums dedicated to dinosaurs and the Jurassic Coast, like those in Sidmouth or Lyme Regis.
