Come along and join us.
it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Wells City Carnival that is back after an unplanned absence of two years.
i was asked to come on board as a new chairman which i was delighted to accept.
i have been connected to the carnival for many years in one way or another, and i am delighted to bring my expertise to the committee.. this year is going to be a very stressful time as we need to recover from lack of funds.
We have had to pay out in the last three years for insurance and storage amongst other things and have been unable to do any fundraising, so it is more important than ever that you support our carnival so we can rebuild and secure the future of this wonderful event.
any donations can be paid to Lloyds Bank,High Street, Wells or send a cheque made payable to Wells City Carnival to the Secretary: m. Day, 28 Queen elizabeth Court, Street Ba16 0Br tel: 07383 978470
many thanks for reading this and please enjoy our wonderful spectacular show. regards Robert Hale

Parker Service Group Ltda tribute to NANCY DODD
I first met nancy about 1970 when I joined the unigate carnival club, she worked at unigate and was soon trying to get us to join the committee and leave the club, I told her no chance.
However, after a while, I became a long distance driver with unigate and spent a lot of time away from home, so I joined the committee and nancy and Cecil became great friends. Her enthusiasm for carnival was second to none and she led from the front in every endeavour. From organising presentations to carnival Queen dances around the villages. Sorting everything from judges and special guests.
nancy was a Freeman of Wells and had served as both the Chairman & President of the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnival. association. She was a formidable lady who had a will of her own and God forbid anyone who should step on her toes.
I have felt the nancy dodd wrath on many occasions, but always from the heart. We always remained friends. Her
passing has left a great void in our organisation and one that will prove hard to replace.

GORGONS Carnival Club
gorgons Carnival Club’s 2022 entry is titled tattered Sails
Theme: Pirates
Idea by: Anthony Reed Cart captains: Matt Andrews & Anthony Reed
Chairperson: Harriet Fowler Secretary: Shelly Ford
Headquarters: Wells Football club
Song: Curse of the Vampire Coast - Tattered Sails Shanty
This year is the carnival club’s 50th Anniversary. The entry is based on a pirate theme and is similar to the 1st cart we made at Butler Carnival Park back in 2000. The club decided would be a great way to repeat the theme as has been 20 years since we have been building there. In the last few years the club’s membership has decreased, which means we have only able to pull out a 2 piece entry.
Gorgons Carnival Club can provide events with trained marshals/stewards, we also have our own outside bars for any type of events.
For more information about any event we hold or any service we provide, please ask a member of the club. The Carnival club is always looking for new members to help fundraise, build the cart, and perform. Members under 16 year olds must have a family member join them.
If you are interested, please contact Shelly Ford through the clubs Facebook page or email GorgonsCC@aol.com We
MENDIP VALE Carnival Club
our entry this year is called end of the pier, set in the 1960s. the float has a helter skelter, swing boats, chaira-plane and even a popular shop with everything from buckets and spades to sticks of rock.
It’s a fun entry which everyone can relate to, from young to old there’s nothing better than a family walk along to the end of the pier.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us this year, and especially over the last two years. Without your help it would make it a lot harder.
We are always on the lookout for new members. If you would like to become a member contact our chairwoman, Romey Richards, on 07974817970.
It’s getting harder each year so we’d love to see some news faces joining the club. We also do pretty much all of our fundraising at steam rallies which is very enjoyable.
It’s been such a long time since we have been able to get back on the road and we can’t wait to entertain you through the streets of Wells once again. So when you see us make sure you give Wells’ oldest carnival club the biggest cheer of the lot.

a guide to JUDGING at the Carnival
Carnival is very competitive and entrants are striving to obtain the maximum amount of points in order to win the many trophies. These are not only at the Town in attendance, but also for the County Cups competed in at the seven towns on the Mid-Somerset Circuit. Judging takes place whilst the Procession is on the move. In the region of 60 Judges are allocated classes as shown in this Programme from which the following headings are observed to obtain the scoring. For the mounted entries classes 1-6 the following categories are judged.
1) Presentation & General Effect
This is the first & overall impression that the entry has upon the Judge.
2) Musical Appropriateness
How well is the musical content of the entry presented & how appropriate is the choice of music to the theme of the entry.
3) Stillness/Pose Class 1&2, or Life & Movement Class 3,4&6 or Comedy Content Class 5
With Features, movement is paramount. These entries must be judged, not for the amount of movement, but for the effectiveness of the movement & its appropriateness to the theme.
Rhythm, timing, choreographic impact, energy & action portrayed are significant elements of movement which must be considered to determine the overall effect of the movement of an entry.
However. in Tableaux, points are awarded for the ability of the personnel on an entry to maintain a position of complete stillness. A competitor, whose eyes clearly move, following someone in the crowd, spoils the illusion of the entry as a Tableau.
Comic entries should be judged according to the impact that the comic element has upon you. Obviously each Judge will have their own sense of humour, but the reaction of the spectators is also an indication of the general comic effect of the entry.
4) Costumes & Make-up
The effectiveness of the costume along with the appropriateness of the costume to the theme. Room is left for artistic interpretation according to the way the entry wishes to portray its theme.
5) Lighting
Again the effectiveness is the key word. It is not the sheer volume of light which should score the highest points, but how effectively it is applied.
6) Cart Build up
Effectiveness is most important. The quality of workmanship & the technical skills demonstrated are all taken in to account.
Six judges will each be given a pair of categories i.e. 1&2, 3&4 or 5&6 this being a total of 36. 16 judging classes 1,2,5 & 6 the other 16 judging classes 3 & 4.
In the walking Classes 7-13, there is a slight difference where the following Categories are judged.
1) General Effect & Entertainment Value 2) Costume / Prop & Makeup 3) Presentation & Routine 4) Ingenuity
Here the categories are split as 1&2 or 3&4, with each of the 6 judges given one of the pairs making an additional 12 judges for classes 7 to 13.
Additionally there are classes for the Best decorated towing vehicle, for which the following are judged
1) Vehicle build up 2) Presentation & general effect 3) Lighting
Here the categories are grouped as 1&2, 1&3, 2&3 each judge having a pair of categories
Finally there is a class for the best dressed towing vehicle driver (who has to be visible from the waist
For these two classes another 9 judges are required.
The judges are spread evenly along the route in 6 zones with no duplication of class/category within the zone. This gives fair results to all entries especially if problems occur along the route.
For example, if there were a temporary problem with the music or lighting, and all judges for that category were close together, then the entry would be unfairly judged..
All categories are marked from a total of 40 points & these scores are entered in to a computer programme with the results being available later in
Collecting tins can be obtained from Wells Film Centre, Princes Road, Wells after 5pm. Collection floats are being supplied by Mendip Shooting Ground, Wells and Glastonbury Young Farmers, Jack’s Station, Foundry Garage and D’Ovidio Builders and various other organisations.
