Editorial
The importance of plastics for the manufacture and handling of medical products is continually increasing all over the world. Requirements will continue to grow, not only from the point of view of costs. Thanks to their specific technical properties and wide range of application, they offer numerous advantages in comparison to other materials. Thus, for example, our iglidur® polymer plain bearings run lubricant and maintenance-free. There is a wide range of hygienic design solutions available, too: without grease and oil, corrosion-free, easy to clean! The same applies to our igubal® pivoting bearings, DryLin® linear plain bearings and xiros® polymer ball bearings. igus® offers you more than 10,000 plain bearing items ex stock, within 24 hours or the same day. Without minimum order quantities, from one single unit. 29 catalogue materials are René Achnitz available for almost every application. This ranges from FDAconform bearings through to high-temperature or underwater bearings. We will be happy to visit you on site to answer questions about your application. Equally, you are very welcome to come and visit us at igus®: We have now completed the 60-percent extension of our lean factory at our Cologne headquarters. igus® now produces, tests and researches in Cologne in buildings with a total area of 36,000 m². You are more than welcome to give us a call, too. We are available from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday, and from 8 am to midday on Saturdays.

for innovative artificial hips
After lower limbs have been amputated, it is important to regain mobility. Wear-resistant polymer plain bearings made of iglidur® Z ensure better movement in artificial hips. The new artificial limb for people amputated at the hip made by Otto Bock Healthcare compensates the missing muscles to a large extent and reduces the amount of physical effort required to walk. The foot‘s rolling motion is harmonic under full load. The forces that occur under oscillating movement are transmitted reliably without any increase in play. Four plastic plain bearings made of iglidur® Z prove their wear-resistance on the two main axes. The maintenance-free bearings absorb extreme loads and have high mechanical damping at the same time. This has a positive effect at edges and under impact loads.

New materials and dimensions
On the one hand, the xiros® polymer ball bearing range serves the niches high temperature and chemicals. Applications for the maintenance and lubricant-free systems can be found in medical technology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. In addition, igus® offers maintenancefree ball bearings for a wider range of uses under normal temperature, also made of tribo-optimised plastic. The single-row groove ball bearings according to DIN 625 have been designed for lubricant-free dry running. Inner and outer ring are made of high-grade iglidur® materials. The roll bodies are made of stainless steel, glass or plastic. A completely new igus® development is the maintenance-free ball Maximum media bearing material xirodur® C160. It resistance and yet is extremely media-resistant, can still economical: New be used up to 80 °C and is ® xirodur C160 material economical. for temperatures up to

medical @ Polymer bearings: Safe, ergonomic and durable Special cycles for the disabled and senior citizens have to be fail-safe and sturdy. The manufacturer draisin GmbH relies on durable, maintenance-free plastic ball bearings from igus® in numerous places.
Components made of tribo-optimised plastic have been used for several years now. Thus, for example, the flexible profile round guide DryLin® W for seat adjustment, igubal® pivotal bearings for straightforward folding for transport and iglidur® G plain bearings in the pedals and seat springs. Further examples: The variable DryLin® W measuring system is used to control the tricycle frame. The lubricant-free miniature profile guide DryLine® N is installed in a therapeutic aid for stroke patients, the orthosis.

Hygienic design and high temperature The new spindle linear table DryLin® SHTC-HYD combines stainless steel and plastic. It is resistant to chemicals and corrosion. Rounded corners, no countersunk screws as well as large, easy-torinse gaps make fast, one-hundred-percent cleaning possible. The new DryLin® SHT-20-EWM-HTX is compact and extremely sturdy. The plain bearing films are made of iglidur® X, which allows use up to permanent usage temperatures of up to 180 °C. Shafts and spindles are made of stainless steel, slides and traverses of anodised aluminium.

xiros® pedestal and flange bearings with ball bearings: Anglebalancing to compensate alignment faults.
Maintenance-free and adjustable With the DryLin® W linear guide with „Turn-To-Fit“ function, customers choose for themselves whether they would prefer defined play or if the unit is to be pre-tensioned without play. The tolerance of the maintenance-free system is adjusted over the whole bearing surface by turning a setting screw. This way, the bearing is an optimum fit for the shaft and can be moved without lubrication. The system has a compact design height, very good friction and wear values, is light and resistant to humidity and dirt. Ideal, for example, for therapy and dialysis beds and workstations for the disabled.
