“The Eastern Cape, an area where 72% of individuals live below the breadline.” The communities of need who surround us are often forgotten in the worlds of comfort we have created for ourselves. We are so keen to read about the expansion of Walmer Park Shopping centre or comment how busy Greenacres is (our popular shopping centre in Port Elizabeth), dashing to the many food outlets of choice to enjoy sumptuous meals or vie with each other in our passion for the best cars, sound systems and decorated homes that we are oblivious of the many in distress around us. The glitter and glamour of our worlds has undermined the woe and worries others are experiencing.

Hand of the Almighty and He will ensure the profits of peace and security in both worlds according to our intentions.

To soothe our conscience of self-indulgence and merrymaking, we comment on the poor by saying: “we work hard for our money….”, “the poor are so lazy…”, “they just want to collect food parcels, tell them to wash the car in the yard and see how quick the ‘poor man’ runs”. Fair enough, there are those who are professional beggars/con artists who are experts in seducing a soft heart for a quick buck but is that the fault of every poor person? A widow who has four children to feed, a family left in destitution because of a druggie husband who desert his responsibilities, a mother who has a sickly child who needs urgent help to get to Cape Town for treatment, a poor lady who desperately needs a wheelchair for her beloved handicapped child or an elderly mum who has given her last portion of cereal for her hungry child - are they also to be forsaken? Do we forsake and hate a poor person who is tested by circumstances and ignore their plight? Do we honestly feel

It is a sad reality that many will only donate when seeing a picture of a child with a distended belly due to starvation, a mom caressing a dying child or share some pity when a vulture lurks close to a starving baby, then our pockets empty in zakaah. The lives of humanity have become a movie to us, only an emotionally powerful image of distress stirs our we are acquitted from blame since they conscience, whilst we ourselves cannot are old and unemployable, uneducated lacking a varsity degree so they deserve to undergo a slight dip in our earnings and cannot tolerate any form of financial be looked down on with contempt in our difficulty. The Islamic ethos of generosity circles whilst we splash R 500 on a video game, large pretty vases for our lounges, or found in our illustrious past bears testimony show support to our rich friend’s daughter to help without discrimination. Supporting a widow, caring for orphans, helping a with lavish wedding gifts? These have businessman who is cash-strapped and become our beautiful ideals: that we will contributing to the upliftment of society in care more for our housemaids - paying general was de rigueur of the identity of them exorbitant wages to ensure our Muslims. homes are prim and proper for the next party; or for the Joneses who may stop We earnestly need to examine the manner over for tea since the housemaid is our need for keeping a standard, not the issue of our social welfare donations and rekindle the passion to assist others and of kindness or sharing of resources with live to the Prophetic dictum: “Love for your a fellow human being. So our assistance Muslim brother what you love for yourself”. to those less endowed is almost always As much as a comfortable lifestyle is for our selfish reasons rather than true cherished by ourselves, we should aspire charity which seeks no recompense other to create and share this happiness for than the pleasure of the Almighty. Yes, we are heavily taxed for what we earn and the every Ummati, this is Fidaa! Devotion and sacrifice to the Ummah and making efforts government owes the poor their due; and to alleviate difficulties of the Ummah! May corruption has brought unrest throughout the Almighty grant us all the understanding, the country but none can deny that as Muslims, our donations are accepted in the Ameen.

ZAHSA Al Fidaa Foundation is affiliated to ZAHSA and have currently above 550 applicants who have been verified. A workshop was held in the Darul Ihsaan offices on the 16 march 2013. Alhamdullilah, major organisations were present like SANZAF, AL IMDAAD FOUNDATION, JAMIATUL ULEMA KWAZULU NATAL, IQRA as well as other bona fide organisations. With recommendations from these bodies, ZAHSA hopes to create a uniform system allowing national standards to all zakaah bodies. Please view the website at www.zahsa.org. The Al Fidaa team were instrumental in devising ZAHSA and hope that the Almighty will accept ZAHSA on a national level and that other bodies join in this initiative which will ultimately provide a comprehensive data landscape for all zakaah organisations. If all major bodies come aboard this concept, at the click of a button ZAHSA will be able to calculate the exact number of Zakaah cases in South Africa. The online program allows recipients to be searched according to area locality, income, gender and profession. Al Fidaa Foundation hopes to introduce this concept to all its branches and sister organisations to form a comprehensive overview of the Zakaah position in the Eastern Cape. cont on page 11... Madressas & Makaatib Operated By The Al Fidaa Foundation Madressas/Makaatib are the fountains of faith. Islam’s preservation depends on these institutes to grant the skill to read the Quraan fluently and to teach the basics of Deen to our next generation. The duas learnt are necessary for salaah, Haj and practises of Islam. Attendance of children to maktabs creates an environment of Deen for their homes. Children reading to their parents, revising fiqh and lessons of Deen results in a wholesome atmosphere of Islam within the home. The system of Makaatib and madressa is a reponsibility we owe to Deen and should be foremost in the mould of a healthy Islamic society. Madressa Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi was Sallam) was our first Madressa established in Kensington, followed by Madressa Abu Bakr in Katanga. Katanga has approximately 40 Muslim families but it is so sad that the Katanga area has no Musalaa or musjid. Whilst we are quick to build musjids in affluent areas, the needy areas which are so close are completely neglected. We beseech the Muslim public to contribute generously to the building of a musjid in the area for the five daily salaah and Deeni activities. For further enquiries, please do contact the Al Fidaa office at 041 453 1222.

Madressa Shamsul Huda is our prized Madressa project with close to a hundred students. Initially it was started by the late Moulana Adam Saheb who is marhoom; we pray that this project remains a Sadaqah Jaariyah for him and all the donors involved. Thereafter it was in the capable care of Hafez Tayob Moosagie and family who took a keen interest in upholding this institute over the years. Al Fidaa now operates this Madressa which includes Hadhrat Moulana Rashied Ramlan sahib as principal and four female Mualimas. Hafiz Mustapha Lagerdien also assists with the older boys. This madressa is situated on Zimdahl Street on the property generously donated by Mr Husain Vanker Saheb, shukran jazeelan. Madressa Umar is situated in the Salt lake area and Madressa Uthmaan is situated in Bloemendaal. The Al Fidaa Taalimi board ensures that the madressas are operating smoothly with good rapport between Staff and admin. The Waterval Institute (also known as Mia’s Farm) assists in supervising the Madressas and regularly checks on all Madaaris. Twice a year the Waterval Inspectors participate in testing students and reviewing class progress so that up to date reports can be

drawn up. May Allah Ta’ala reward them well for their kind assistance and supply of books for learners. Mia’s Farm also hosted two workshops for Ustaads in Port Elizabeth at the Madressa Mansoor premises. Gifts are regularly given to students who show progress and parents are invited to the madressas to attend talks to encourage families the importance of learning Deen. We thank our donors for their financial assistance and pray the Almighty accepts our efforts for the preservation of Deen.

Maktab Feeding Program Many of our children come hungry to Madressa. Al Fidaa Foundation provides a simple sandwich to the learners since they are our guests and the beloved students of Deen. Approximately 70 sandwiches are made daily and distributed to the learners. The approximate cost for this project is R 4000 a month. Al Fidaa also feeds parents and children with a good meal at occasions to create love between the Ustaads and families and to share light-hearted moments with parents. Please donate your aqeeqah meat or animal to this most important project. We welcome groups to make fresh, wholesome sandwiches to be dropped off at the office before noon so that they could be distributed to our Madressa learners. For more info please contact our office at 041 453 1222.

Adult Classes Skills Centre Adult Madrasa classes have begun in Helenvale, Timothy Valley, Salt Lake, Kwazakhele & New Brighton Al Fidaa Foundation is in the process of forming a team of Muallimas to run a standardised syllabus for Adults. Knowledge is power, and through knowledge only, will hearts gain faith and the conviction to change for a better Islamic lifestyle. Al Fidaa will encourage our Zakaah recipients also to attend these classes so that the necessary laws of Zakaah, Nikaah etc. can be learnt by as many people as possible at venues close to home. Efforts will be towards firstly Shaafi syllabus and insha Allah we hope

to later establish male adult classes. The syllabus will be reviewed by the Ulema to ensure that basic knowledge is learnt by participants to lead a life as a true Muslim with the correct beliefs. Poverty should not be an excuse for lack of access to Islamic learning. Al Fidaa wishes adults from disadvantaged homes to have access to an Islamic education and not to shy away from knowledge due to age. May the Almighty make this drive a success insha Allah.

Our Mission has always been to make people independent and create the spirit of entrepreneurship amongst needy people. To encourage ladies to become self reliant, a sewing course is offered

to suitable applicants at no cost. Some have progressed to advanced courses later and started simple home income businesses. To date, Al Fidaa Foundation has done completed seven batches cont on pg 4

MADRESSA MAKTAB SURVEY The Al Fidaa Team have done a detailed study of present madressas in the Nelson Mandela Metro. Our field workers visited various areas and with careful input from community members, have earmarked 17 areas which are in dire need of a maktab/madressa. These have been marked with the help of Google Maps. If any organisation wishes to open Madaaris in these areas,

please feel free to contact our offices for a copy. It is our wish that concerned individuals sponsor towards this project and help Islam stay firm by the introduction of these Makaatib. In many of these areas, houses will have to be rented as an initial start up cost. After they have become established, a Musjid/Musalaa should be erected. May Allah Ta’ala soften our hearts to establish

these much needed makaatibs, Ameen. Our condition in Eastern Cape is worthy of forewarning. Poor Muslims in most areas do not have easy access to praying and learning venues. Yet we cast a blind eye to these local projects and donate large sums to other provinces. At times our egos become obstacles towards progress in local

projects, resulting in loss of barakah to all. The poor in our midst need our support and protection. Our wealth and time towards them will benefit our Islam. The neglect we see in so many projects in the Eastern Cape is only due to constant bickering and disunity of which the poor unfortunately suffer the consequences. May Allah Ta’ala grant us all the understanding, Ameen.

of students ranging from areas like Gelvandale, Kwanobuhle, Malabar, New Brighton, Zwide, Veeplaas, Kwazakhele, Missionvale and Motherwell. At times, we arrange a lift to collect learners close by, from and to their homes. A computer course is also offered to applicants free of charge. Many non Muslims have attended these courses and are greatly appreciative to the skills offered to them. Al

Fidaa Foundation also offers participants daily breakfast free for the entire course and provides meals on certain days. The Skills Centre houses 12 sewing machines and twenty computers.

AL FIDAA FOUNDATION RUSSEL ROAD JAMAAT KHANA to a survey conducted, more than a thousand Muslims live in the CO-HOSTS AN ISLAMIC According Central area of town, of which many are foreigners. The Islam Awareness Centre is based at 12 Rodney Street in the city centre of Port Elizabeth. The organisation started in 2009 and has actively been promoting the beautiful concepts of Islam. Sheikh Imaan has been a long time assistant to the centre, which is supervised by the Chairperson Mr Naushad Adams. The organisation also regularly places beautiful excerpts of the Quran in local newspapers and distributes literature to the public. Any queries with regard to the centre may be directed to 082 786 3455. Al Fidaa has co-hosted Page 4

seven groups of non Muslims to the centre where the beautiful concepts of Islam were highlighted and doubts about Islam were dispelled by workshop instructors. The audience included school teachers, principals and many of the applicants who visited the Al Fidaa Skill Centre. Many thanks to the support of the Dawah centre and Moulana Yusuf Bhemath in co-ordinating workshops at the Dawah centre as well as at schools. We pray that the Islam Awareness Centre grows in strength to assist the understanding of Islam for those who search for the truth about Islam. Newsletter First Edition 2008 - 2013

Letters of thanks and appreciation Asalaamu Alaikum Waraghmatullah, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Al Fidaa organisation for the most wonderful work it does feeding the poor and needy patients at West End Clinic, and other sites in the Metro. Being the pharmacist at the clinic, I have in the past year marvelled at the sterling work being done. Al Fidaa is the epitome of what an Islamic organisation should be. On a daily basis warm soup and sometimes mealies and beans are dispensed, and for many patients it’s the only warm meal for the day. It was pitiful in the past to see these people that sometimes queue from after 4 am, going home hungry. Many chronic patients came with inflated blood pressures etc, all because they could not take their medication due to not having any food at home. I have seen churches distribute at other clinics, a “sawdust” mix, and call it “soup”, once a week, with much fanfare, song and dance, whilst a dedicated Muslim group provide a nourishing meal without any hulabaloo. Brother Suleiman Haffejee is a hands on worker, as well as a daaie to the non Muslim patients. What an asset to Al Fidaa. Moulana Nazeer, you have started this organisation with tawakkul in Allah a Azza wa Jal, and today you can see the fruits. As the Khulafaa e Rasheen ( Radi”Allahu Anhum Ajmaeen) served the poor, today you follow in their mubarak footsteps. May Allah Rabbul Izzat give strength and dignity to your organisation. Ameen, ya Rabbal Alameen. Wasallaam, Adam Ebrahim.

CARELINE 0861 000 349 Many people due to the pressures of western modern influence fall short in solving the many complex scenarios of life and often resort to magazines or friends to help sort their moments of crisis. Un-islamic advice and bad company only makes our problems worse. Al Fidaa Foundation has initiated this helpline to assist with sound Islamic solutions to real, everyday trials. Run by a panel of excellent qualified volunteers with professional experience, the helpline offers sincere advice and encouragement to persons for the sake of the Almighty.

The panel of Counsellors have had several workshops over the years with students interacting with them on an informal basis and rendering down to earth tips on leading a quality life. Workshops were held at Nasruddin High School, St Thomas High School, Woolhope High School and at YOi (Youth of Islam) events. Pamphlets and bookmarkers were also distributed.

OFFICE OPENED IN BLOEMENDAL AND INSHA ALLAH KING WILLIAMS TOWN Al Fidaa Foundation has its roots and beginnings in the office space generously bestowed by the PEMET (Port Elizabeth Muslim Educational Trust). This office space was utilized for approximately six months. Through the kind gesture of an anonymous donor, Al Fidaa Foundation took hold of a premise on 50 Standford Road, Korsten, allowing staff and visitors to focus on the core activities of the Al Fidaa Foundation. However, many of the needy were also based in areas far away from the Standford Road office. For their ease, Al Fidaa has a satellite office on 2 St. Theresa Street, Bloemendal to make the services of Al Fidaa more accessible. The office is run by a professional female counsellor. We pray that the Almighty accepts our services to humanity and many thanks to all donors for their kind assistance. A soup kitchen also operates from the office and feeding times are in the afternoons, Monday to Friday.

If any person wishes to join or has projects to suggest please do contact our offices at 041 453 1222.

METHODOLOGY OF ZAKAAH ASSISTANCE AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Many of our recipients apply at our offices for assistance. Al Fidaa Foundation has highly qualified staff that provides passionate care and advice to persons requesting assistance. Appeals are made in the form of rent, food parcels or medical assistance. Applicants are immediately recorded on our ZAHSA online program and a fieldworker follows the application with a house visit to verify the circumstances. If the applicants qualify after the house visit, then only will

the applicant be recorded as a CASE FILE on our data base. Preference is given to widows, orphans, or women with family responsibilities. Al Fidaa Foundation regularly corresponds with other organisations to verify applicant information to protect against the zakaah being distributed in the incorrect avenues. Al Fidaa Foundation does not grant assistance to males without families due to financial constraints. Males will be encouraged

Tel: 041 453 1222 Web: www.alfidaa.co.za

to look for employment or given support to start a business venture to attain financial security. Thus far Al Fidaa has supported applicants in the fields of plumbing, electrical security and welding courses, street vending and lawn trimming. To date, we have many success stories which only gives credence to the old age motto “give a man a fish and he has food for the day, teach him to fish and he has the skill of earning for a lifetime.

King Williams Town is a lively town, home to many Muslim families who have great passion to assist the poor in the Eastern Cape. Many projects in the country are sponsored by the caring individuals who reside in King Williams Town and to be part of this dynamic community, Al Fidaa Foundation is in the process of establishing an office in King Williams Town. The office will be supervised by an Alim who will also stratergise welfare work in and around King Wiliams Town. This office will work closely with our East London branch, headed by Moulana Anwar Variawa (present Imam of the Town Musjid in East London).

DISASTER MANAGEMENT/ WINTER WARM PROJECTS AND DISTRIBUTION OF USED CLOTHES

Al Fidaa Foundation, due to generous donations from the public of food and clothing, are able to respond to certain emergency situations at times. Floods and shacks burnt down due to fires create great loss to people. Al Fidaa according to its means, responds with temporary food kitchens or distribute food parcels needed by such persons. However, due to financial constraints, Al Fidaa Foundation is not able to respond on a national level. Blankets are distributed in winter to our Zakaah applicants or to persons affected by unforeseen circumstancTel: 041 453 1222 Web: www.alfidaa.co.za

es. Although government is responsible for people in disaster afflicted areas one should take cognizance of the many Muslims that are also affected. Your assistance would strengthen their belief in Muslim brotherhood and unity. Remember, our walls and strong “palaces” are a protection from the elements but our charity is our protection from the trials of the Hereafter, and charity grants the Mercy of the Almighty on all in every condition. Please donate open-heartedly for these ongoing projects as a sadaqah for you and your loved ones. Page 9

YOi

(Youth of Islam) is a branch of the Al Fidaa Foundation which structures programs for the youth. Guest speakers interact on the level of youth inspiring them through Taalim on important issues affecting their lives. Students from Woolhope Senior Secondary School and St Thomas High School have been taken out on excursions under the supervision of teachers in an Islamic environment. Farm owners were kind enough to bestow their immaculate landscapes for students to roam about and enjoy countryside experiences with Taalim and Islamic lectures. May the Almighty bless all who participated and grant each of the volunteers the best of both worlds in reward. Al Fidaa appreciates the help of volun-

teers who make all our projects successful, shukran jazeelan. Al Fidaa also hosted a very successful jalsa for young female teens at the Masjdus Saalihaat 1 Bell Road Parkside. Prizes were given and the spirit of enthusiasm was shared by all. We wish to thank the Principal and staff for their excellent assistance, shukran. Al Fidaa Foundation hosted two camps for Muslim Youth boys. A great thank you to the trustees of Musjid Taqwa and Musjid Al Aziz, for providing a venue for students to sleep over and utilise for programs. All this was due to the many hands which volunteered and we ask Allah Ta’ala to grant the greatest rewards for all those who contributed and assisted.

EDUCARE CENTRE FOR PRE SCHOOLERS IN VLAKKIE Malabar Ext 6 Al Fidaa Foundation operates an Educare centre in Ext 6 Malabar. The venue used is the Malabar Ext 6 Jamaat Khana. Classes are held daily from 9am to 1pm. Children from the age of four attend and are taught basic reading and writing alongside simple Duas and Islamic etiquette. At present we are trying to procure land for a permanent educare centre which will house the items needed for learners of the centre. These areas are infested with drug dealers and people of low morality and conduct; a rose would wither in such harsh surroundings. Our only hope is to make an effort on young hearts and grant them sound Islamic principles. We hope then to give a selected few sponsorships in worldly and Deeni avenues to uplift families from their dismal surroundings and inspire their actions with Islam and true sincere belief. These are neighbours on our doorstep who require assistance and encouragement. Al Fidaa also assists the Adolph Schauder Pre School with items of need and food assistance. Your support will be our strength to sustain the many projects of Al Fidaa Foundation.

“Please allow me to take this wonderful opportunity to sincerely thank you for all the efforts you have done.”

from the Zakaah Desk

All praises are due unto the Almighty for having granted us the opportunity to be a part of the discharging of this responsibility of Zakâh, placed upon the shoulders of the wealthy in our society. Through their commitment we were able to bring some relief to the poverty-stricken Muslims amongst us as well as those experiencing difficulties in their daily lives. • Alhamdulillâh, a highlight of our department this year was the development and introduction of the first ever online Zakâh applicant data base known as ZAHSA. The details of approximately 700 Zakâh applicants have been captured to date and it facilitates the accurate distribution of Zakâh in a systematic manner. This program has already been showcased to other major charity organizations and has been met with acceptance. • As our department deals with the discharging of Zakâh to worthy recipients, the following are examples of actual individuals that have benefitted through the Zakâh of our Muslim community: 1. An unemployed woman, 38 years old, who is a single parent with 2 children assisted with rental of R2860. 2. A divorcee, 40 years old, with 3 children - assisted with rental and electricity to the value of R2710. 3. A divorcee, 39 years old, with 2 children - contribution towards a much needed operation to the amount of R7500. 4. A divorcee, with 2 children. 1 child needs to travel to Red Cross Hospital regularly because of a medical - Al-Fidaa assists with transport costs and daily expenses in Cape Town. 5. A widow, 50 years old, with 4 kids - provided with a two-plate stove and a monthly food parcel. 6. A widow, 64 years old, with 2 kids - provided with monthly food parcels. So from the above it is evident that our Zakâh when discharged, will indeed bring some relief to those suffering some sort of hardship and difficulty and at least bring a smile to their faces. These are but a few of the many cases that are dealt with on a daily basis. So the need for the fulfilment of our Zakâh is extremely great! May Allâh Ta’âla grant us the ability to continue discharging this responsibility which constitutes a pillar of Islâm and may He maintain in us the worry and concern for those less-fortunate than us. Ameen
