ZAHSA Al Fidaa Foundation is affiliated to ZAHSA and have currently above 800 applicants who have been verified. A workshop was held in the Darul Ihsaan offices on the 16 March 2013. Alhamdulillah, major organisations were present like SANZAF, AL IMDAAD FOUNDATION, JAMIATUL ULEMA KWAZULU NATAL, IQRA as well as other bonafide organisations. On the 29th May 2014 ZAHSA was previewed to Sheikh Abdul Khaaliq and Sheikh Irfaan Abrahams of the MJC (Muslim Judicial Council). With recommendations from these bodies, ZAHSA hopes to create a uniform system allowing national standards to all zakaah bodies. Please view the website at www.zahsa.org. The Al Fidaa team were instrumental in devising ZAHSA and hope that the Almighty will accept ZAHSA on a national level and that other bodies join in this initiative which will ultimately provide a comprehensive data landscape for all zakaah organisations. If all major bodies come aboard this concept, at the click of a button ZAHSA will be able to calculate the exact number of Zakaah cases in South Africa. The online program allows recipients to be searched according to area, locality, income, gender and profession. Al Fidaa Foundation hopes to introduce this concept to all its branches and sister organisations to form a comprehensive overview of the Zakaah position in the Eastern Cape. cont on page 7...

MAKAATIB OPERATED BY THE AL FIDAA FOUNDATION Makaatib are the fountains of faith. Islam’s preservation depends on these institutes to grant the skill to read the Quraan fluently and to teach the basics of Deen to our next generation. The duas learnt are necessary for Salaah, Haj and practises of Islam. Attendance of children at Maktabs creates an environment of Deen for their homes. Children reading to their parents, revising fiqh and lessons of Deen results in a wholesome atmosphere of Islam within the home. The system of Makaatib is a responsibility we owe to Deen and should be foremost in the mould of a healthy Islamic society. The Al Fidaa Taalimi board ensures that the Madaris are operating smoothly with good rapport between Staff and admin. The Waterval Institute (also known as Mia’s Farm) assists in supervising the Madaaris. Twice a year the Waterval Inspectors participate in testing students and reviewing class progress so that up to date reports can be drawn up. May Allah Ta’ala reward them well for their kind assistance and supply of books for learners. Mia’s Farm also hosted two workshops for Ustaads in Port Elizabeth at the Madrasah Mansoor premises in 2013 and a single workshop in February 2014. Gifts are regularly given to students who show progress and parents are invited to the Madaris to attend talks to encourage the importance of family to the learning of Deen. We thank our donors for their financial assistance and pray the Almighty accepts our efforts for the preservation of Deen. YOUNG HEARTS INSPIRE LOVE AND SACRIFICE FOR DEEN A few thought provoking incidents from the lives of kids who attend our Madrasah’s in difficult circumstances

Madrasah Ali - Jacksonville A boy age 11 walks 2km with his two younger sisters to Madrasah daily. Streets are not like our suburb streets. Its roads are in terrible conditions and it’s uphill most of the way. Despite weather conditions, they were punctual in attending Madrasah. (Sadly the boy doesn’t attend now due to contracting T.B) Madrasah Abu Bakr - Helenvale A student of the Madrasah was innocently shot during gang violence in the area. Madrasah Shamsul Huda - Zimdahlstr A student told the ustaad, “How do I make istinjaa ( clean oneself in the toilet) at home, we don’t have a flush toilet, I use a bucket” Madrasah Saeed - Azalea Road Madrasah closed and needs to relocate due to excessive spate of gang violence. The Ustaad mentioned on few occasions that shooting was taking place right infront of the Madrasah. Madrasah Zubair - Malabar Ext6 New Madrasah started. A six year old crying in Madrasah, when the ustaad and inspector asked her why she is crying, she said her tummy is paining due to hunger, Alhamdulilah the next day feeding was introduced in the Madrasah. Madrasah Ali - Jacksonville A female student was absent for many days. When inspectors visited the house the student was shy to attend Madrasah as she did not posses Islamic attire anymore, Her Muslim father does not live with them and her mother went back to christianity lives with Christian boyfriend in the house. Kids want to remain Muslim. They live in a 5m x 10m shack.

MAKTAB FEEDING PROGRAM Many of our children come hungry to Madrasah. Al Fidaa Foundation provides a simple sandwich to the learners since they are our guests and the beloved students of Deen. Approximately 240 sandwiches are made daily and distributed to the learners. The approximate cost for this project is over R 11 000 a month. Al Fidaa also feeds parents and children with a good meal at occasions to create love between the Ustaad and families and to share light-hearted moments with parents. Please donate your aqeeqah meat or animal to this most important project. We welcome groups/individuals to make fresh, wholesome sandwiches to be dropped off at the office before noon so that they could be distributed to our Madrasah learners. For more info please contact our office at 041 484 1288.

MADRASAH REPORT 2014 Maktab education is the most important and at the same time most neglected institution of primary education. It serves as the lifeline to the preservation and protection of the Islamic faith. Yet the number of maktab students is dwindling and the question is who or what is too blame? Maktab gives children the opportunity to master a syllabus that is the best in the world to acquaint

themselves with the basic laws pertaining to the obligations that they have to discharge on a day to day basis. Al-Fidaa Foundation has identified key areas in the Metro and established makaatibs to ensure that the legacy of deen will be carried on by our younger generation. By Muhammad Matvad

Madrasah Muhammed SAW 25 Kipling Street Kensington Enrolment: 19 Students The Madrasah was established in 2008. Premises was generously made available by Molana Hanief Moosagie Saheb and family. This was the first maktab established in the area to cater for the 40 Muslim families living there. A musjid is needed in this area to cater for Kensington, Perridgevale, Sydnham and North End.

Madrasah Abu Bakr Pienaar Str Shops Helenvale Enrolment: 27 Students The Madrasah was established in 2008. What was once a surgery operated by the late Dr. Mansoor, the premises was made available for Islamic education by Mrs F Mansoor. Prior to the establishment of this Madrasah, students had very little access to syllabi Islamic education. The area is well known for being notorious and rife with gang violence. There is a dire need for a Musjid to be built in Helenvale, to serve as a beacon of light.

Madrasah Umar 51 Felcas road Salt Lake Enrolment: 17 The Madrasah was established in 2009 utilising a classroom in the Bethelsdorp High school. Due to vandalism the Madrasah had to move. Alhamdulilah Mrs Rashida Abrahams has made her garage space available for the Madrasah. Renovations are required to ensure comfort for the students.

Madrasah Uthmaan 2 St Theresa Str Bloemendaal Enrolment: 30 The Madrasah was established in 2010. Premises was generously made available by Dr. Moola. Bloemendaal being a very vast area and not all Muslims living close to the Musjid made it difficult for parents to afford their children with syllabi Islamic education.

Madrasah Ali 3 Angola Str Jacksonville Enrolment: 15 Al-Fidaa Foundation adopted the Madrasah in 2013. The premises is looked after by the Malabar Muslim Association. The area is plagued by poor infrastructure and basic services thus placing extra sacrifice on those students attending the Madrasah. Many a times public riots have become an obstacle for our little ones walking to Madrasah. A Musjid is needed in the area to serve the community better.

Madrasah Sa’ad 109 Angola Str Timothy Valley Enrolment: 15 The Madrasah was established in 2014 to cater for those students from Timothy Valley who were not attending the Madrasah in Jacksonville due to the violence and robberies along the way. Premises was made available by Mrs Z Mohamed. A musjid is needed whereby the adults could also further their zeal for Islamic Education.

Madrasah Zubair 1968 Saliehout Str Malabar Ext6 Enrolment: 11 The Madrasah was established in 2006 by Hajee Haroon Patel Saheb. Al-Fidaa Foundation adopted the supervision in February 2014. Continuously being plagued by gang violence and drug abuse have hampered the growth of Islam in this area. A musallah is required to provide a safe and secure area for imparting Islamic education and performance of Salaah.

Madrasah Abu Ubaidah Tromp Road Missionvale Enrolment: 15 Al-Fidaa Foundation adopted the Madrasah in 2014. An area well known in the Metro for high unemployment, poverty and access to basic services has the left the community in a dire strain of need. A desperate need for a Musjid is required.

Madrasah Shamsul Huda Zimdahl Str Beverly Hills Enrolment: 88

Madrasah Tun Noor 68 Diedloft Str Bloemendaal Enrolment: 19 Al-Fidaa Foundation adopted the supervision of the Taalimi in September 2013. The Madrasah is situated at Musjid Noor. Alhamdulilah our little ones have a great zeal for Islamic Education and have made great strides in perfecting their Tajweed.

The Madrasah was established by the late marhoom Molana Adam Saheb; we pray that this project remains a Sadaqah Jaariya for him and all the donors involved. Thereafter it was in the capable care of Hafez Tayyib Moosagie and family who continued to nourish the zeal for Ilm. Premises was generously made available by Hajee Husain Vanker Saheb. Al-Fidaa Foundation now operates this Madrasah which has 2 Male and 5 Female Asaatiza. The Madrasah is in a desperate need for an alternate premise to accommodate the six classrooms needed.

ADULT LADIES CLASSES Alhamdulillâh, we have successfully established classes for ladies in the Salt Lake and Arcadia areas. These classes are being conducted by the staff of Madrasatu Banaatil Islaam under the supervision of Moulana Riyaad Lagerdien.

Arcadia : There are also an average of 10 ladies attending classes at this venue. Students also cover aspects of Fiqh, Aqâ’id, History, Duas and Qur’ân reading.

Salt Lake Madrasah

Classes at this venue are held on Sundays from 10am to 11am.

There are on average 10 ladies attending classes at this venue. Alhamdulillâh, 2 ladies have also accepted Islâm at the hands of the teacher and are currently learning the basics of Islâm.

Students at these classes are extremely eager and punctual in their attendance. They instil pleasure into the hearts of the teachers making them feel honoured to share their knowledge with them. Programs are regularly held wherein they are encouraged regarding the virtues of acquiring knowledge of Deen.

One student has also commenced with Qur’ân recitation after having completed the elementary books. Classes at this venue are held on Thursday nights from Maghrib to Ishâ.

LETTERS OF THANKS AND APPRECIATION Asalaamu Alaikum Waraghmatullah, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Al Fidaa organisation for the most wonderful work it does feeding the poor and needy patients at West End Clinic, and other sites in the Metro. Being the pharmacist at the clinic, I have in the past year marvelled at the sterling work being done. Al Fidaa is the epitome of what an Islamic organisation should be. On a daily basis warm soup and sometimes mealies and beans are dispensed, and for many patients it’s the only warm meal for the day. It was pitiful in the past to see these people that sometimes queue from after 4 am, going home hungry. Many chronic patients came with inflated blood pressures etc, all because they could not take their medication due to not having any food at home. I have seen churches distribute at other clinics, a “sawdust” mix, and call it “soup”, once a week, with much fanfare, song and dance, whilst a dedicated Muslim group provide a nourishing meal without any hulabaloo. Brother Suleiman Haffejee is a hands on worker, as well as a daaie to the non Muslim patients. What an asset to Al Fidaa. Moulana Nazeer, you have started this organisation with tawakkul in Allah a Azza wa Jal, and today you can see the fruits. As the Khulafaa e Rasheen ( Radi”Allahu Anhum Ajmaeen) served the poor, today you follow in their mubarak footsteps. May Allah Rabbul Izzat give strength and dignity to your organisation. Ameen, ya Rabbal Alameen. Wasallaam, Adam Ebrahim.

ESTABLISHMENT OF FIRST SOCIAL WELFARE OFFICE IN UITENHAGE BY THE SHAHEED JEEVA TRUST has assisted the Shaheed Jeeva Trust to establish the first Social Welfare Office in Uitenhage. The premise is situated in the Madrasah Tus Shaheed complex on 48 Rosedale Drive. There is a qualified counsellor to attend to the needs of the community and is under the direct supervision of Moulana Shuaib Brood. Zakaah applicants will be captured on the ZAHSA online program. The office will be opened daily 8:30am to 1:00pm Mon to Friday. For more info please contact Moulana Shuaib Brood at 073 721 4847.

Uitenhage boasts the second eldest Musjid in South Africa which was built in 1849. The town has a large amount of Muslims and through the Grace of the Almighty the Al Fidaa Foundation

Page 6

The Shaheed Jeeva trust will co-operate with likeminded organisations and persons in the interest of the poor and welcome projects to partner for the upliftment of the people of Uitenhage. No single organisation can fulfil the needs of any community, it is the unity of purpose despite differences that will accomplish great tasks by few like-minded persons. This Ummah requires broad shouldered personalities to sacrifice for the upliftment of the Ummah and every atom of good which is done sincerely will move mountains of despair from the hearts of the distressed. But May the Almighty reward the Shaheed Jeeva Trust only those whose hearts are filled with compasfor their most wonderful contribution to social sion and endowed with the pain of the Ummah welfare and may the centre be of benefit to the will realise the urgent need to merge our capabilicommunity of Uitenhage, ameen. ties and talents for the benefit of the Ummah.

MISSIONVALE JAMAAT KHANA

Years of neglect and lack of support have caused perhaps irreversible damage to the morale of the people of Missionvale, an area once upon time with a visible Muslim population today shows no signs of its once apparent Muslim community. If the world has to cry its loss to the history of Spain we Muslims of Port Elizabeth need to cry woe on the indifference we have shown to local Muslims in areas like Missionvale. As yet, there is no established Musjid in this area, the present Jamaat Khana belongs to a third party, how do expect these families to uphold the tenets of Islam without the core protection of a Musjid? Al Fidaa Foundation thanks to the Almighty has established the semblance of a Jamaat Khaana, an Imaam has been appointed and regular salaah takes place with Maktab activities. We beseech the public to donate generously towards a Musjid and to support the community by involvement and duas.

Molana Abdul Khaaliq Allie Secretary of the MJC was present as Guest Speaker at this momentous occasion. JazakAllah to all attendees.

Currently we have 24 verified applicants who received food parcels in our recent distribution. From amongst our applicants we encountered the following types of people : 1. Pensioners who had many children in their care, resulting in their monthly stipend from the government being depleted very soon after it was received.

METHODOLOGY OF ZAKAAH ASSISTANCE AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT Many of our recipients apply at our offices for assistance. Al Fidaa Foundation has highly qualified staff that provides passionate care and advice to persons requesting assistance. Appeals are made in the form of rent, food parcels or medical assistance. Applicants are immediately recorded on our ZAHSA online program and a fieldworker follows the application with a house visit to verify the circumstances. If the applicants are qualify after the house visit, then only will the applicant be recorded as a CASE FILE on our data base. Preference is given to widows, orphans, or women with family responsibilities. Al Fidaa Foundation regularly corresponds with other organisations to verify appli-

cant information to protect against the zakaah being distributed in the incorrect avenues.

Al Fidaa Foundation does not grant assistance many a times to males without families due to financial constraints. Males will be encouraged to look for employment or given support to start a business venture to attain financial security. Thus far Al Fidaa has supported applicants in the fields of plumbing, electrical security and welding courses, street vending and lawn trimming. To date, we have many success stories which only gives credence to the old age motto “give a man a fish and he has food for the day, teach him to fish and he has the skill of earning for a lifetime”.

AL-FIDAA FOUNDATION PE ZAKAAH REPORT 2014 Alhamdulillâh, through the grace of the Almighty and the generosity of our donors we were able to provide relief to a number of our Zakaah recipients. Indeed the tough economic conditions have made us see an influx in the numbers of people needing assistance. Placing luxuries aside, people are struggling just to maintain a life based on necessities. Luxuries in their lives have become extinct with a major portion of their income being used for electricity and food. Then there exists those categories of people who do not even know where the next meal would come from.

Many records exist of the monthly challenges we face in assisting people with various financial problems. Through the employment of ZAHSA we have identified families in extreme dire straits for whom we will endeavour to provide food parcels on fixed monthly basis. Thus providing a continuous form of assistance during these trying times of theirs. Our Zakaah projects are solely dependant on the funds made available by donors, however, this does not put us in a position to provide assistance to all applicants. We maintain a policy of trying to cover all applicants by giving each one a chance to benefit from assistance available. Kindly assist us with your Zakaah contributions to facilitate vast coverage of our recipients. Al-Fidaa Foundation White Door Centre of Hope Localised Victim Support Centre Introduction The crimes against women and children continue to impact on their rights: the right to be treated with fairness and with respect for your dignity and privacy; the right to protection and the right to assistance. In South Africa the levels of crime and violence are seen as one of the biggest threats to the consolidation of democracy and the future stability of the country. Background In response to increased reports of crimes against women and children, the Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP), a Programme of the National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS) was announced in May 1996 and officially launched in August 1998, however, full implementation only started in January 1999 after a lengthy process of obtaining approval of the inter-sectoral business plan. Prior to 1994, needs of most citizens were neglected and social awareness around crimes involving sexual and domestic violence was very low. The strategy was developed to address the high rate of victimization in South Africa. VEP has to contribute to building safe and peaceful communities, strengthening a human rights culture and provide more effective, multi-sectoral, co-ordinated responses to victims of crime and trauma particularly women and children. Vision A society in which crime prevention is prioritised and the rights and needs of victims of crime and violence are acknowledged and effectively addressed within a restorative justice framework. Purpose To develop, strengthen and monitor integrated victim empowerment policies, programmes and services at all levels through strategic partnerships within and between government and civil society. Specific emphasis is placed on the prevention of victimisation, providing support, protection and empowerment for victims of crime and violence, with a special focus on vulnerable groups.

Goal The aim of the VEP is to provide a holistic and effective person centered support service for victims of violence and crime. Interventions of both preventative and curative nature are applied. White Door Concept Defined The Department of Social Development in collaboration with other stakeholders such as Health, Justice & NPA, SAPS, Education, Correctional Services, Civil Society Organizations aim to provide integrated, responsive and quality service to victims of crime and violence. All these Centres have mostly volunteers who solely depend on government and corporate funding for the programme, capacity building and stipend. The utilization of volunteers forms an integral part of the programme. Definition of a White Door Centre A white door is a localised victim reception centre that is located as close to the community as possible. It functions as a short term safe space that victims can access if they need to wait for professional services, including the police. Services Offered A white door site is a short term safe space and the victim should not remain in the site for more than three to six hours. The site operates as a localised reception-assessment-referral (RAR) site. As these sites are largely manned by community members a clear process flow must be put in place to ensure that the WD can link to the closest professional site. Due to the short length of stay at the WD, limited services will be offered in terms of counselling etc. The victim will only be contained emotionally and then referred out for professional services. In terms of psycho social interventions, only very basic non-professional emotional support will be offered. The following is a summary of services that will be offered at the WD site: • A safe secure environment. • Basic emotional containment. • Referral to the closest professional victim’s service site. • Basic care items, such as a blanket, refreshments and clothing.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT/ WINTER WARM PROJECTS AND DISTRIBUTION OF USED CLOTHES

However, due to financial constraints, Al Fidaa Foundation is not able to respond on a national level. Al Fidaa Foundation operates an Educare centre in Ext 6 Malabar. The venue used is the Vlakkie Jamaat Khana. Classes are held daily from 9amto 1pm. Children from the age of four attend and are taught basic reading and writing alongside simple Duas and Islamic etiquette. At present we are trying to procure land for a permanent educare centre which will house the items needed for learners of the centre. These areas are infested with drug dealers and people of low morality and conduct; a rose would wither in such harsh surroundings. Our only hope is to make an effort on young hearts and grant them sound Islamic principles. We hope then to give a selected few sponsorships in worldly and Deeni avenues to uplift families from their dismal surroundings and inspire their actions with Islam and true sincere belief. These are our neighbours on our doorstep who require our assistance and encouragement.
