MADRASAH REPORT 2015 Al-hamdulillah, Allah Ta’ala has blessed the Muslims of South Africa with the system of the Maktab. Many Arabs who migrated to different countries of the world such as Brazil, Argentinia have struggled to maintain an Islamic presence in their new surroundings. However our forefathers in South Africa from Cape Town to Gauteng have adopted the Maktab system resulting in hundreds of kids over generations schooled in Qur’an, Islamic history, Adab & Akhlaaq, Hadith, Fiqh and much more. It
Inspirational stories from our children attending Madrasahs Madrasah Umar – Salt Lake A student mentions to her Appa, “You explained and made us understand why it is so important to attend madrasah. You make sure that we make our wudhu correctly and perform our salaah” A parent mentioned to the Ustaad, “Since my son started attending madrasah his behaviour have improved so much better at home”. Students ask the Appa if they could please attend madrasah during the holidays as well as they love being in madrasah. In their quest for knowledge two students undertake a journey of 2kms daily to the madrasah
has become the platform of many to become Hafiz or pursue the life of an Islamic Scholar or Sheikh/ Molana through the Maktab system. Today more than 80% of Muslims can read the Holy Qur’an due to the effective teaching in the Madrasah/maktab. We owe our identity as Muslims in this country, the numerous Hufaaz and Ulema and our passion of welfare to the seeds implanted in our hearts by the Ustaads of the maktabs. Let us support this wonderful and effacious methodology and spend with heart and for His love towards this most impactful teaching of our children.

and back home. Madrasah Shamsul Huda – Beverly Hills A student mentions to her Appa, : “ I am the only muslim person in my home, everyone else is Christian.” The Appa asked how does she manage in Ramadhaan? The student says,” My grandmother is the one that will wake me for sehri and make sure no one eats in front of her. Her granny will even go so far as to fast with her despite the fact that she is not Muslim An 8 year old female student entered into the Quran this year, her classmates were very excited and happy for her. This achievement made her classmates more eager to complete their yassarnalquraan before the end of the year
InShaAllah. Madrasah Tun Noor – Bloemendal Two students voluntarily attend madrasah on Saturday and Sunday to further their memorisation of the Quran. Madrasah Uthmaan – Bloemendal The Ustaad mentions, “Since the Al-Fidaa Taalimi board presented a workshop to parents on how to assist their children at madrasah and we have introduced a merit system, we see a lot of competition among the students vying for the top spot. Madrasah Muhammed – Kensington A grade 1 female student went into the Quran. She is a very hardworking and dedicated student always willing to help others where she can.

The Al-Fidaa Foundation Maktab Feeding Program is one of several feeding schemes. Many of our children come hungry to Madrasah. Al-Fidaa Foundation provides a freshly made sandwich daily to the learners since they are our guests and the beloved students of Deen. Approximately 300 sandwiches are made daily and distributed to the learners. The approximate cost for this project is R15,000 per month.

ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES
MALABAR EXT 6
MASJID SAALIHEEN Our mothers are proven to be an important link in the chain of knowledge for a child. When that link is weak or non-existent, the effects can be seen in the child. Alhamdulillâh, the Al Fidaa Foundation is successfully still running its Islamic educational program for women covering aspects of learning to recite Qur’ân, Fiqh (jurisprudence), Aqaaid (beliefs) and Seerah (history). The program currently runs in Salsoneville, Salt Lake and Malabar Extension 6, with ladies attending once a week for approximately an hour on different days of the week. We are still in the early stages of establishing these classes at 2 more venues inshâ-Allâh. The ladies in other areas have heard Newsletter Third Edition 2008 - 2015
about these classes and have now requested that it be established in their areas as well. Students attending these classes are so enthusiastic that at one madrasah, if the teacher is unable to make it to the class due to transport issues, the ladies all get their own transport and have class at the home of the teacher. Indeed this displays the desire and enthusiasm for the knowledge of deen. Certain students would also request extra tuition time from the teacher so as to enhance their knowledge even more. We thus see that the teachers also have to sacrifice for the upliftment of their communities. 4
A direct result of these classes is that some of the students are mothers to those attending our makaatib (afternoon madrasah for children) so they ensure that their children attend regularly and they are now better equipped to assist the children at home. These mothers have now become a catalyst for the men also to commence with learning Islâm. Inshâ-Allâh with this type of vigour we can definitely produce a nation who will become flagbearers of Islâm. We make du’â that the Almighty perpetuates these efforts of ours and makes it means of the salvation of all those instrumental in the operation of these classes.

THE PLIGHT OF OUR ZAKAAT APPLICANTS The Plight of Reverts A lady had accepted Islam and got married, having 2 kids she was abandoned by her husband who became involved with another woman and succumbed to alcohol abuse. Having nowhere to go to and nobody to assist her, Al-Fidaa assisted her with daily bread and milk as well rental for one month. Alhamdulillah! Now she has attained employment and is sustaining her family. Assault ruins livelihood A self-employed man having survived a brutal assault at his home, lost all his belongings and could no longer continue living at his residence. Al-Fidaa stepped in by assisting him with rental at a new place, utensils, bedding and food items. He contacted our staff the next day telling us how he and his family enjoyed a peaceful night’s sleep! The test of not being able to see well Sight is a bounty which we very seldom show gratitude for. With the advancement in age the sight of a person generally deteriorates. We’ve received numerous applications for assistance with eye-ware. Alhamdulillah, many of our elderly were given extended use of the eyes with eyewear to enhance their vision
Apostacy (Irtidaad) rife in our community Missionaries have taken advantage of the poverty and plight of people in our community. Al-Fidaa staff have come to know of 13 families who have left the fold of Islam. Due to weakness of Imaan, these people have become the fishing grounds for missionaries. Alhamdulillah, our staff have begun a process of visiting these families to ascertain their status and Alhamdulillah, thus far 1 family has come back into the fold of Islam! Much effort and concern is required for us as a community to protect and safeguard the belief of fellow Muslims. One lost, is one too many!! The Plight of our widowed mothers Death being an inevitable reality, comes at a time when we least expect and creates huge changes in our families. One such incident is of a lady who was left to care for her kids at the sudden death of her husband. With no immediate family to assist them, Al-Fidaa has undertaken to supply the family with monthly food items. She will also be assisted with a supplement of items to boost her home-based business making food items for sale to the surrounding community. The Height of poverty and strife A family pitches up at our offices informing staff that they haven’t had a decent meal for the past 3 days. Staff provided them with food items and necessary

utensils. A family of 5 individuals all unemployed with no income at all were assisted with their water and rates account. A divorcee with kids forced to live off her mother’s state pension due to unemployment. She has been assisted with rental for one month, a monthly food parcel and assistance with electricity. Currently she has found employment to sustain her family. The elderly, the forgotten stalwarts of our community The elderly of current times have to endure abuse, neglect and poverty due to their rights not being fulfilled either by their family or society at large. They are left to fend for themselves living off a meagre state pension which is quickly depleted due to the high cost of living. Al-Fidaa on a monthly basis assists the needy amongst the elderly with food parcels being delivered to their doorstep. Those who are capable come and collect food parcels on a monthly basis from our office. Becoming a means of Guidance After having accepted Islam, a man had the task of convincing his spouse to do the same. With interference from her family no real inclination to Islam was apparent. She accompanied her husband to our offices and our staff engaged her regarding the aspects of Islam. Alhamdulillah! She left our offices as a Muslim after having accepted the tenets of Islam.
2015 SPECIAL REPORT MISSIONVALE, THE
FORGOTTEN PEOPLE!
FROM OUR ZAKAAH DESK… Alhamdulillâh, we have once again been given the opportunity to present to you, the reader, an overview of our activities in the Zakaah Department of the Al Fidaa Foundation. It is indeed a sad situation that with the increase of unemployment and current economic climate, many more people are left to suffer with inadequate accommodation, hunger and poverty. Allâh Ta’âla through His infinite mercy and grace has instituted the avenue of Zakaah as a means of taking care of the needs of the destitute and poor amongst His creation. Our offices encounter many people daily who just require the bare necessities to survive. Currently we have 1055 case files on our Port Elizabeth database whom we help regularly with food items, rental, water and electricity and medical costs when the need arises. Looking at this amount we will definitely realize that to help each and every individual continuously will prove financially difficult! Besides the physically disabled, ill and old individuals there
are others whom we assist with training and educational needs. Through this process we empower them with the skills and ability to fend for themselves thus lightening the responsibility on the community for the future. These individuals then find employment for themselves or through our recommendation they are able to gain experience from those already in that particular field. The various incidents and reports quoted in this edition will bear testimony to the array of cases that our staff have to deal with at our offices. With our experienced staff and efficient processes coupled with our online Zakaah program ZAHSA, we are able to discharge Zakaah in a manner which is not degrading and demeaning for those needing assistance. Without a doubt from the time the applicant walks in at our offices till he is processed and assisted, it is a pleasurable experience! We therefore implore you to continue supporting us thus making it easy for us to assist the needy in our community. Kindly contact our offices at 041 453 1222 should you require any further information.

For long Missionvale has remained a site with many shacks and tin structures, however the landscape is rapidly changing with the erection of RDP homes. Newspapers bear testimony to the struggles and plight of these people with no adequate sanitation and water. Indeed they have been forgotten, yet once upon time it was the grounds of prosperity and luxury for those who previously resided there. With some parts of the area named Khan Grounds, Lombard Grounds, etc. we are exposed to the reality that this was once a place where Muslims also lived since these names were commonly associated with Muslims. Sadly the names are all that has remained with a very few still holding fast onto whatever remnants they have left of Islâm. It is with this concern that the Al Fidaa Foundation has envisaged the construction of a centre which could take care of the religious needs of the community and fortify the next generation. We have made an application to the municipality for a site which could best serve this purpose but are awaiting their response. Currently we are operating a maktab (afternoon children’s madrasah) as well as a soup kitchen in the locality. We cannot sit back and watch an entire community lose their Islâmic identity and ethos without us making a concerted effort to aid their plight. The Tabligh Jama’at brothers can bear testimony to harrowing statistics of people that have already left the fold of Islâm. Indeed it is a sad state of affairs! Alhamdulillâh, on the other hand we can say that many children from non-Muslim backgrounds are being taught in our maktab. There is even a student from the area who is currently becoming an Aalimah! Indeed Allâh Ta’âla has kept guidance in His control, but nothing stops us from making effort towards the attaining of that guidance and its establishment. Let’s not be part of those who have forgotten the people of Missionvale. We therefore implore you to assist us in making this project a reality and investing in your Aakhirah! Kindly contact our offices for further info.

What Is The Function Of A SETA? The main function of a SETA is to bring skills development to the employees (or prospective employees) in its sector
SETA ACCREDITATION
What Is SETA? SETA, is an acronym for Sector Education and Training Authority. It refers to the authoritative educational bodies established under the South African Skills Development Act (97 of 1998). At the moment, there are over 20 different SETAs in South Africa. Each established SETA acts as a training and education quality assurance body in its respective sector, which means that they are highly respected in their specific areas. There are SETAs that deal with tourism; banking; manufacturing; agriculture and more.
The Benefits Of SETA Accreditation
SETA accredited training entails that a skills development course is approved by one of the 21 industry specific SETAs. Each SETA sets specific standards for training providers which ensures the quality of the SETA accredited course. Once the attendee has completed the SETA accredited training, they will obtain recognition of competence that is recognized throughout the whole of South Africa. It confirms the level of proficiency and quality of training undertaken for current and future employers. Therefore, the main benefit for employers is the knowledge that a certain standard has been set and adhered to by the course provider. The attendee has the benefit of knowing their training will be recognized throughout South Africa and can aim to complete a full Qualification Title if numerous courses have been successfully passed of the same qualification standard.
What Are Unit Standards? The title of a unit standard expresses the main outcome that someone who is credited with the unit standard has demonstrated they know and/or can do. Unit standards (standards) are the building blocks for qualifications and may be combined into different pathways and qualifications to meet the needs of different learners. Unit standards are a collection of knowledge, skills and attributes in which a learner must prove competence in a structured assessment to gain credit on the NQF. Each unit standard has a unique number associated with it for ease of reference. Which Unit Standards Has Al-Fidaa Foundation Been Accredited For? Al-Fidaa Foundation has been provisionally accredited to offer the following unit standards: UNIT STANDARD 123631: Cost a garment UNIT STANDARD 123632: Make garments UNIT STANDARD 10006: Demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurship and develop entrepreneurial qualities UNIT STANDARD 14569: Demonstrate an understanding of how to participate effectively in the workplace UNIT STANDARD 13999: Demonstrate an understanding of basic accounting practices Al-Fidaa Foundation has also applied to be accredited for the following unit standards: 12115 Finish and store pressed and iron items 123630 Establish customer requirements and sell a garment 123633 Source Materials
Al-Fidaa Foundation is working towards providing competency certificates to its learners. There are a few key elements that need to be in place. With time and effort we are confident we shall reach that process in the near future. Tel: 041 484 1288 Web: www.alfidaa.co.za

Islam Awareness Centre
ISLAMIC AWARENESS CENTRE ARTICLE WRITTEN BY BROTHER NAUSHAD ADAM (CHAIRPERSON )
There is no question that there is much ignorance about Islam, but worse are the misconceptions that are perpetuated by the news media, which breed prejudice. There is a need to inform, and educate the public and rectify these errant views about Islam. On a local city basis, in Port Elizabeth, there is one such organization that has seized the initiative. Even the hardline critics of Islam and orientalists are given a response. Islam Awareness Centre is a non-profit organisation, based in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. Its objective, apart from the above, is to assist anyone who has questions about, or, is interested in learning more about, and or embracing this way of life. It is run by a small and dedicated group of volunteers.
our trustees, Sheikh Iman Nakhomo has designed varying presentations depending on the need and level of the attendees. While Al Fidaa Foundation equips occupational skills to many needy individuals and groups, they have partnered with us to provide a comprehensive introduction to Islam. Such presentations often extend over 2 to 3 hours, such is the interest. not a session passes without a substantial open Question and Answer period. The amazement of attendees at what Islam really is in comparison to their own, often incorrect understandings, almost always prompts them to request extending the presentation until they are satisfied. The proof of this is that Al-Fidaa has kept a continuous stream of teachers, and other groups they train, filling our centre both during the week and on Saturdays. To consolidate the concepts in every presentation, all attendees are given a Da’wah pack consisting of a Qur’an (translation) and da’wah literature.
WEEKLY ISLAM AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS We run weekly Islam awareness and da’wah campaigns in the local newspapers, as well as on social media, consisting of quotes from the Qur’an and Hadith as they apply to various aspects of life, drawing attention to the perfect way of life as commanded by Allah Subhanallah Wa Ta’ala and as shown by Rasulullah SallalahuAlayhiWasalam.
Al Fidaa Foundation very generously provides return transport to the centre, as well meals for the attendees. Apart from this, active da’wah takes place in a few masaajid/ madrassas in the townships, and there have been residents who have embraced Islam on an ongoing basis.
We also distribute Islamic literature highlighting the basics of Tawheed, Nubuwah, and the Code of Life of the Qur’an. We organise da’wah seminars and train da’wah workers, for which purpose we use multimedia tools and conduct live presentations at our centre situated at 11a Rodney Street, Central. One of

KING WILLIAM’S TOWN OFFICE A year has passed since the establishment of the Al-Fidaa office in King William’s Town. Alhamdulillâh, we have approximately 50 case files on our database whom we regularly assist. These people travel from far areas outside of the town and therefore are only able to visit our offices once a month.
Being in the heart of the Eastern Cape, we encounter many cases of households where the grandparents are left to fend for their many grandchildren. They barely make ends meet with their monthly state pension. Through the help of the Almighty Newsletter Third Edition 2008 - 2015
we are able to bring relief to these struggling people. However, the relief is short-lived as sometimes there are many individuals under one roof so the food items do not last very long.
they receive in the form of soup and samp and beans.
From this office we also supervise the 5 soup kitchens operating in the surrounding areas. These soup kitchens are running at a Masjid in the rural area of Ethembeni, an orphanage, a school for the physically challenged and two clinics.
Our aim is still to establish a skills centre in the area whereby we could empower the locals with such skills which could open up a gateway for them from their poverty-stricken lives towards a life of independence and self-sustainability. Due to the unavailability of suitable space and the exorbitant property costs, this remains a dream yet to become a reality.
Alhamdulillâh, the recipients of the assistance at these venues really appreciate the nutritional supplements
We make du’â that the Almighty makes this dream a reality and utilize us for the upliftment and benefit of mankind.

Abu Mansoor Muhammad Al-Baghdaadi (RA) was a pious saint who was a Saahib e Karaamat (one who was able to do miracles). He had taught the entire Qur’aan to 70 blind students. After his demise someone saw him in a dream and enquired as to how Allah Ta’ala had treated him, to which he replied, “Allah Ta’ala forgave me by virtue of my having taught little children Surah Faatiha.”
