AUGUST 2022

HEALTH FOCUS

with Dr Gaby

Every month our medical director DR GABY PRINSLOO shares her insights and expertise on health, wellbeing, and skin health topics. With the recent reformulation of SKIN YOUTH BIOME ™, this month we’re revisiting the link between the microbiome and the ageing process

Emerging research on the gut microbiome shows that it is essential for wellness and healthy ageing… BACTERIA, FUNGI AND VIRUSES

and probiotics, improve the composition and diversity of our gut microbiome, improve gut health and decrease local and systemic inflammation, promoting healthy ageing and longevity.

Our digestive tract contains a host of bacteria, fungi and viruses, known as the gut microbiome. A healthy gut contains 30 to 100 trillion microorganisms, with a combined weight of around 2kg. These microbes have a symbiotic relationship with our bodies. They improve digestion and produce vitamins such as vitamin K and B vitamins. They also ferment undigested fibre to produce post-biotics, including metabolites such as short chain fatty acids and neurotransmitters, which regulate our immune system, nervous system and hormones and maintain a healthy gut barrier. In short, they are essential for good health, and the greater the diversity of bacteria in the gut, the better one’s health.

Prebiotics are the non-digestible fibres, such as whole grains, garlic and inulin, found in numerous fruits and vegetables, that promote the growth of our beneficial bacteria – food for the good guys. Probiotics are the bacteria themselves. They decrease inflammation, fight free radicals and improve a host of age-related medical conditions including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Probiotics also affect our skin. They reduce inflammation which improves inflammatory skin conditions, as well as slowing the process of ageing. They can improve epithelial growth and reinforce the epithelial barrier, as well as stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as hyaluronic acid. However, it is essential to choose the right probiotic. It needs to be good quality, contain a large number of microorganisms (or colony forming units (CFUs)) and contain bacteria that can pass through the acid environment of the stomach. It should also contain specific bacterial strains that have been scientifically shown to lead to improved health.

GOOD AND BAD Sometimes we develop an imbalance of good and bad microbes in the gut, called dysbiosis. This can be caused by numerous factors including; prolonged stress, antibiotics, a high sugar, low fibre diet and physical inactivity. We are also more likely to develop dysbiosis as we get older. With age, the amount and diversity of bacteria decrease and the production of healthy post-biotics declines. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome impacts the intestinal barrier which becomes leaky. When this happens, it allows inflammatory mediators, bacteria and endotoxins (toxins from bacteria) into the blood. This leads to inflammation which, when chronic, has been identified as one of the key mechanisms of ageing, known as inflammaging. Researchers have suggested that dysbiosis is the primary cause of chronic inflammation and has a significant impact on age-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases (including dementia and Alzheimer’s). Inflammaging is also a key mechanism accelerating ageing of the skin.

TEAMWORK Microbes work as a team, so diversity is key. While each strain has a specific benefit, they also create the right environment for other good bacteria to grow. As a result, taking probiotics which combine multiple synergistic strains is important. For the most effective results, we need to take a holistic approach to improving our gut, reducing inflammation and delaying ageing. In addition to supporting our gut microbiome with prebiotics and postbiotics, we can eat a low sugar diet, manage stress, exercise appropriately, get a good night’s sleep and only use antibiotics when necessary. We can reduce inflammation with omega fatty acids and we can provide our skin with the nutrients, both oral and topical, that it needs for optimal health.

PREBIOTICS AND PROBIOTICS Fortunately, there are things we can do to improve our gut microbiome and reduce the effects of inflammaging on our body and skin. Dietary interventions, including prebiotics

A MOMENT in the sun:

SUN PROTECTION FACTORS

SPFs have never been higher, but neither has the rate of skin cancer. According to Cancer Research UK, over 15,400 people develop malignant melanoma each year, compared with around 1,800 in the mid-1970s. SPFs are now available in excess of 60, so why aren’t they protecting us? SUNSCREEN PRODUCTS— SAVIOURS OR SINNERS?

A SECOND LINE OF DEFENCE If your clients want to achieve superior protection against the sun, antioxidants need to be incorporated into their skincare regime. They mop up free radicals generated in the skin from UV exposure, minimising the damaging effects they have on DNA. Advise clients to apply an antioxidant sunscreen such as Environ® RAD and RAD Shield® (suitable for oily skin) dependent on the clients’ skin type. Also encourage them to take supplement form to protect skin over the whole body (Skin Antioxidant from Advanced Nutrition Programme™ contains a broad spectrum of antioxidants that have proven benefits with regards to UV radiation). Daily use is essential. Studies indicate that even on cloudy days 80% of radiation from UVA rays breaks through.

Despite using very high SPFs, the numbering system can be misleading. It’s logical to assume that SPF30 provides twice the protection of SPF 15, but it only blocks 4% more rays (SPF 15 blocks 93%) and contains a much greater level of potentially harmful chemicals. High SPFs give a false sense of security, which means people reapply them less frequently and spend longer in the sun. Another contributing factor to the rise of skin cancer is that people don’t apply enough, particularly if the SPF is high. The advice is to cover the skin in a ‘shot and a half’ but in a study published by the journal JAMA Dermatology, only 55% correctly identified the amount required.

FREE RADICAL DAMAGE

POWERFUL PROTECTION BOOST

Research has shown that high SPFs can be harmful when left on the skin*. Chemical sunscreens are only effective for two-three hours after application. They absorb UV rays during this time, but once they stop working they turn into free radicals which react with DNA cells, increasing the visible signs of ageing and the risk of skin cancer. It’s therefore important to keep reapplying regularly. “Scientists do not recommend anything stronger than SPF 15-20 because there is minimal advantage from the higher SPFs… stronger creams contain greater concentrations of sunscreen agents which themselves can be converted into free radicals by exposure to UV rays” says Dr Des Fernandes. It’s important to remember that SPF only indicates protection from UVB rays, which cause burning, and not UVA which cause photo-ageing so using a broad spectrum cream which protects against both is key.

Given its impeccable skin nourishing credentials, it’s no surprise that vitamin A helps defend against UV damage. “The most powerful sun-protective molecule is the retinyl palmitate form of vitamin A, which in adequate doses, can have a photoprotective effect of SPF20 and gives additional protection against UVA”, says Dr Fernandes. As well as applying topically, it should be taken in supplement form. “By using a combination of Vitamin A and antioxidants, it’s possible to safely expose skin to the sun for no longer than 20 minutes without sunscreen, in order to synthesize vitamin D, which is vital for healthy skin as well as preventing conditions such as osteoporosis and even cancer."

REMINDER

Zava put together a regime that suits my skin which is very dry and sun damaged from a childhood growing up in Australia, with a lot of age spots which I found nothing would cure. I have quite a few favourite products which have really helped. The Youth EssentiA® Cleansing Lotion is really gentle and moisturising and the Mela Prep Lotions have really faded my age spots. I am now on AVST 3 and this has made a huge difference to my skin texture as well as the oil capsules and masks which do genuinely give you a bit of a face lift. I also had facial scarring and this is now smoother and overall my skin is much less dry and even a bit glowing. I have now moved to to the Youth EssentiA® C-Quence Serum 4 and the Defence Crème which again has improved the hydration and smoothness of my skin. I do like the way that Zava supplements the skin products with vitamins from Advanced Nutrition Programme™ and supplements, particularly the Skin Omegas, Skin Moisture Lock and Vitamin C which really does keep my skin hydrated and looking radiant, considering its age. Now it's even better with Skin Moisture IQ One Pouch A Day, easy to travel with and economical. I especially like the facials and massage when we are able to meet, which are quite rejuvenating and the mineral makeup is such an easy and natural looking cover. Zava is an amazing person and I am so pleased I have met her.

MEET THE EDUCATOR Education is one our key pillars at the iiaa. Over the next few months, we are putting the focus on our passionate and inspiring team behind our training programme, with our new MEET THE EDUCATOR feature. This month, we meet KATHY KEATING

To find out more about our training workshops or to book a course email EDUCATION@IIAA.EU or call 020 8450 2020 EXT 261 for an updated list of our workshops see HERE

Q. WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY? I have always loved beauty and skincare. I battled with a problematic skin at a very young age, and it led me to the world of skincare. My love for products and treatments and the beneficial impact they can have, is why I am still here today. I wanted to be able to gain as much knowledge on skin and health. I love the idea of making someone feel good about themselves, seeing a change in their skin and most important boosting self-esteem. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR JOB ROLE NOW. WHAT DOES AN AVERAGE DAY ENTAIL? I am a proud iiaa Educator for 7 years now. My role is to Educate salon owners and passionate therapists about our exceptional skincare brands. Providing you with the knowledge and expertise you need to deliver real results for your clients. On a typical day I could be training any of our 16 courses via zoom or in a classroom setting. When not training I enjoy building new courses and supporting salons with technical questions they may have. WHO WAS / IS YOUR INDUSTRY INSPIRATION? Time juggling, hard working mums, entrepreneurial driven skin experts who invest in their staff. Corinna Tolan has rocked the skin profession and really earned her spot in the industry. Her passion is infectious and has inspired so many therapists and public to invest in their skin health. Joann Mahon, a therapist, and entrepreneur who really shows the sky is the limit. My peers inspire me every day!! WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB AND / OR WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY? I feel very lucky to do what I love every day. Meeting passionate skin obsessed therapists and seeing the results they achieve. I am continuously learning in this ever-evolving industry. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? I feel very proud of our Dublin Training Centre and all the therapists that I have trained over the years who continue to come back and refresh their knowledge every year.

WHAT IS YOUR MUST-HAVE ENVIRON® PRODUCT/ TREATMENT AND WHY? I could not live without my daily dose of vitamin A and RAD SPF is a must. I have seen great results with Body Profile treatment. It is a results driven, cost effective treatment. I like to call it my summer Spanx. WHAT IS YOUR MUST-HAVE ADVANCED NUTRITION PROGRAMME PRODUCT AND WHY? There are so many I take daily! Skin Youth Biome and Skin Clear Biome— I feel great physically and the glow and radiance it gives is amazing! DO YOU HAVE ANY PREDICTIONS FOR BEAUTY TRENDS THAT WILL SHAPE THE MARKET DURING 2022? I don’t follow trends per se, but I do think there is more of an interest in anti-ageing treatments, and certainly more are investing. Healthy skin is always on trend. The 2022 consumer is looking for natural, sustainable, healthy, effortless beauty products. WHY SHOULD CLIENTS INVEST IN REGULAR EDUCATION? Knowledge is power but what you do with the knowledge after training is most important. I advise clients to do 3 takeouts after a training course. What did I learn? Where can I make changes? When can I implement these changes? Set goals to help you achieve each time. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COURSE TO TEACH AND WHY? I truly love them all! Vitamin A workshop is excellent, and I am a massive, Advanced Nutrition Programme fan. I could talk for hours! HOW HAS YOUR SKIN CHANGED SINCE USING THE iiaa BRANDS? Post pregnancy I had a little melasma which is now under control. I can safely say I feel more confident to not wear make-up these days. The combination of using Advanced Nutrition Programme and Environ has improved my skin, body, hair, nails, and overall wellbeing.

I could not live without my daily dose

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST BEAUTY NO-NO? Face wipes are huge no no! The first step to a healthy skin is a good cleanser.
