Salon of the year awards 2022 with celebrity host and change maker Mariella Frostrup. Hosted at The Londoner, the world’s first super boutique hotel, the iiaa Salon of the Year Awards were presented by guest of honour and keynote speaker: Mariella Frostrup, on the very same day that she and fellow campaigners engaged with MPs in the House of Commons on their Menopause Mandate. Mariella is known for her illustrious broadcast career ranging across travel, music, and the arts, as well as hosting a current affair show on Times Radio. In 2022, she founded Menopause Mandate with Davina McCall, Penny Lancaster, and others, to campaign for greater awareness of the impact of the menopause. Both the awards and the speeches were a celebration of achievement and resilience. Above all they honoured the dedication of skincare professionals and the extraordinary results that they achieve both on the skin and on confidence from within. For the first time, we also introduced the new Green Salon of the Year Award, for the salon showcasing outstanding sustainability initiatives, a value at the heart of the iiaa. This was presented by David Alpert, to winners The Ivy Skin and Laser Clinic.

Says David Alpert,” I was delighted to launch our first ever Green Salon of the Year Award – which is so important to us here at the iiaa, as well as to me personally. Every year, I am also both proud and humbled by the incredible achievements of our skincare professionals. The 2022 Awards feel particularly poignant – when we reflect on such success, accomplishment, and resilience in the face of Covid and all the challenges created for salons and the high street. It was an honour to be able to celebrate these successes in person together.” Mariella commented: “The invitation to host the iiaa Salon of the Year Awards was one I couldn’t turn down – to share in the celebration of remarkable beauty professionals who are so committed to achieving the very best for their clients and with it to inspire selfconfidence and belief.” Congratulations to all our winners! In our next issue of the Bulletin, we will showcase the fantastic case studies and initiatives from our Green Salon of The Year and Therapist of The Year Catergories.

Trust Your Gut

The Gut & Skin Connection They may be microscopic, but as we all know now probiotics are big news. But how do these microscopic superheroes protect skin and how we can incorporate this as part of a healthy ageing plan. From small beginnings The gut microbiome begins to form at the moment of birth. An unborn baby lives in a sterile environment and is completely free of bacteria until it travels through the birth canal, where it becomes sheathed in protective flora from its mother. It then immediately picks up a variety of bacteria from the environment, such as those dwelling on its parents’ skin and clothing as it happily enjoys its first cuddle, the towel it’s wrapped in, and any hospital equipment it comes into contact with. Far from being harmful, this rapid colonisation is important for helping to train the baby’s immune system. In addition, the typical microbes that first set up home in an infant’s gut are highly adept at breaking down breast milk and the complex carbohydrates which are introduced at the weaning stage, so that vital nutrients can be absorbed. It takes a further three years for the full microbiome to develop, which may explain why babies and toddlers often suffer from digestive issues. Micro-warriors It’s well known that probiotics can help with digestive issues such as bloating, diarrhoea, inflammatory bowel disease and IBS, but the recent surge in research studies has revealed that their powers are far more wide ranging. Diabetes: Research showed that intestinal flora affects blood sugar control and that it could be stabilised by shifting the balance of bacterial populations. Immune system: The gut microbiome communicates with immune cells and controls the way the body fights infection. Weight management: An imbalance of healthy and unhealthy gut microbes is called dysbiosis and may contribute to weight gain, so recommending probiotics to clients seeking to shed post party season pounds is key. Several studies have shown significant differences in the gut microbiome of identical twins, one of whom was obese and one who was a normal weight. In one study when the microbiome of the obese twin was transferred to mice, they gained more weight than the ones that received the microbiome of the lean twin, despite the fact that they ate exactly the same diet. Alzheimer’s: There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that probiotics potentially have a protective effect on central nervous system disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease. Skin health: The scientific community agree that there is a clear link between a strong presence of good bacteria in the gut and healthy skin. Clients with skin concerns such

as eczema, rosacea, acne and the signs of ageing should all be taking probiotics as part of their skincare regime, inspiring the development of our Skin Youth Biome and Skin Clear Skin Biome formulations. Happy gut, healthy skin While the bacteria on our skin provides essential protection, it’s nothing compared to the wonders they work internally. Research into this area is still in its infancy, scientists have already discovered incredible benefits for both skin and general wellbeing but the true extent of their powers may not be revealed for many years. “For over five years, our skin researchers have closely monitored pioneering research surrounding the human microbiome – the fascinating research has increased dramatically! This inspired the development of our pioneering Skin Youth Biome™ (launched 2019) and Skin Clear Biome™ (launched 2021) formulas. Now, we’ve evolved Skin Youth Biome™ by adding in two completely new postbiotic strains. The results from our trials have been mind-blowing – there was a statistically significant result for elasticity improvement and wrinkle reduction, with 100% of participants experiencing an improvement in several of the seven signs of ageing.”, says Lorraine Perretta, Head of Nutrition for our Advanced Nutrition Programme™ supplement range. It's good to talk Another discovery that scientists have made is that the brain and gut are in constant communication. The gut sends messages to your grey matter about various aspects of your skin and health via the vagus nerve that runs between them, almost like a telephone cord. Helping to maintain normal gut flora by consuming probiotics through diet or supplementation helps keep the lines of communication open, enabling it to function at its optimal level and provide tangible skin benefits. The exact biological mechanism behind the skin/gut/brain link is as yet unknown, but in its simplest terms a healthy gut will absorb vital nutrients more effectively, leading to a more youthful, radiant complexion. Conversely, an imbalance of good bacteria may impair the lining of the intestine. This can lead to a condition called ‘leaky gut’, in which harmful bacteria, toxins and microscopic food particles pass through the impaired lining and spend their time merrily floating around the bloodstream wreaking havoc. Among other issues, they can trigger inflammation as the body fights back, which can lead to skin issues along with other health problems. As part of a gut repair protocol, probiotics help

to maintain the balance and protect the lining, keeping any potential escapees firmly where they belong and safeguarding skin health. Do you suffer from SAD gut? Our gut can influence skin health through what is commonly referred to as the gut-skin axis. Various SAD factors impact the balance of our gut: S – stress, smoking, lack of sleep; A – ageing, alcohol, antibiotics; D - diet. Growing evidence that a healthy gut may help support skin challenges like dryness, ageing, discolouration, sensitivity, and overall skin health/ quality. Research shows that healthy, happy gut environment can help regulate positive skin immunity and anti-inflammatory response which are key drivers for healthy ageing and healthy skin. The ultimate all rounder While probiotics aren’t a panacea, their wide ranging benefits for skin mean that your clients should be incorporating them as part of a holistic skincare regime. The exciting part is that the explosion of interest from the scientific community, and the numerous ongoing research studies, means that this is just the beginning. Did you know...Gut goes global Gut health is one of the biggest topics in the nutrition world, and consumers are buying into the extraordinary benefits. Innova Market Insights reports that there was a 25% growth in global food and beverage launches with digestive health-related claims between 2012 and 2016, with a 34% rise in US launches featuring a probiotics claim. As ongoing research reveals the full extent of the powers of beneficial bacteria, demand for supplements that support gut health looks set to increase further still.

Anti-Ageing with Dr Gaby

Every month our medical director Dr Gaby Prinsloo shares her insights and expertise on health, wellbeing and anti-ageing topics. This month: belly bloat

B

elly bloat is more common than we might think – affecting 10 to 25% of otherwise healthy people. It is especially common in summer.

Bloating is a feeling of fullness, tightness or pressure in the abdomen, which may be associated with swelling or distension. The symptoms usually come and go, and can vary in intensity from mild to extremely uncomfortable.

The most common cause of bloating is a build-up of gas in the digestive system. This could be caused by eating too fast or drinking too many fizzy drinks, but more often is caused by gas produced when bacteria in the digestive system break down carbohydrates (a process called fermentation). Fermentation increases with poor digestion, gut dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad bacteria), food intolerances or gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and coeliac disease.

As always, it is important to take an integrated, holistic approach to managing bloating. Digestion often gets worse as we get older. After menopause the body makes less bile and fewer digestive enzymes, leaving food undigested. Bad bacteria then ferment this food producing excess gas. Hormonal changes such as increased estrogen and cortisol can also lead to symptoms of bloating. About 3 in 4 women experience cyclic bloating, either before or during their periods, and many experience bloating in perimenopause. High estrogen can cause increased water retention, increased intestinal gas from changes in gut motility, or increased sensitivity of the gut. Many women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) experience cravings for high sugar foods, which can further impact their digestion and cause bloating. The stress hormone, cortisol, also impacts our gut, decreasing motility, impairing digestion, and increasing gut dysbiosis, leading to digestive symptoms and bloating.

Prebiotics (food for good bacteria) are found in high fibre foods such as legumes, beans, peas, asparagus, berries, as well as many herbs and spices including turmeric, ginger, fennel, and thyme. Probiotics (good bacteria) can be found naturally in some foods including miso, kimchi, sauerkraut and probiotic-rich yoghurt. However, it is always beneficial to include a probiotic supplement containing strains such as lactobacillus rhamnosus, lactobacillus reuteri and bifidobacterium longum. Postbiotics are the bioactive compounds and nutrients that are made by bacteria. While they improve immune function and decrease inflammation, they also improve our digestion and microbiome. These can be found in some supplements. We need to AVOID foods that increase fermentation and damage our gut health. These include high sugar foods and refined carbohydrates such as sweets, chocolates, pastries and cakes, fast foods and processed foods, as well as excess alcohol. Food intolerances can exacerbate bloating. If you are unsure if you have an intolerance, it’s a good idea to keep a food diary to keep track of the foods you’re eating, and look for patterns with the symptoms of bloating. Modern lifestyles encourage habits that can increase bloating. We often eat while working or eat quickly without chewing properly. CHEWING slowly improves digestion and decreases bloating. Drinking enough WATER regularly throughout each day is also essential. It encourages gut motility and prevents constipation, maintaining a healthy digestive system and prevent bloating. Last, but not least, exercising regularly, managing stress and getting a good night’s sleep all improve gut motility and digestion, and decrease bloating. It’s always important to exclude any serious medical conditions which may manifest with bloating. Check with a medical professional if you are in any doubt, especially if bloating is ongoing or getting worse, or you have other symptoms.

Lastly, constipation and even weight gain can leave us feeling bloated. As always, it is important to take an integrated, holistic approach to managing bloating. We need to INCLUDE foods that improve our digestion and maintain a healthy gut microbiome. These include prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics.
