PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS "It’s been said that success is where preparation and opportunity meet. That is how I feel about the efforts of the IIAD staff, IES, Young Agents and the greatest group of association members in Texas!"
Bruce Sams, IIAD President
t’s been said that success is where preparation and opportunity meet. That is how I feel about the efforts of the IIAD staff, IES, Young Agents and the greatest group of association members in Texas! As this year’s president of IIAD I am extremely satisfied with the accomplishments of our association staff, members and Board of Directors in striving to accomplish our mission “SERVING AND STRENGTHENING INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENTS THROUGH EDUCATION, PERPETUATION AND PROMOTION OF GOODWILL. “
My memory is short but this year has seen numerous accomplishments that are in my opinion noteworthy. At our October Luncheon, we had our first annual CSR Appreciation Luncheon. This was a great day of recognition for these capable and hardworking people. We could not do without them or the value and character they bring to our industry. All Industry Day, now to be known as the “Jim Millerman Dallas Insurance Convention,” was a huge success. The event brought to our membership a day of learning, comradery, and networking like no other conference of its kind in the DFW Metro area.
At Christmas, we had a Holiday reception and gift giving opportunity benefitting the Make-AWish Foundation. It was wonderful to see the generosity of our membership overflow to these beautiful children. In January, we celebrated our 4th Annual Academy of Finance Boot Camp for the students of Woodrow Wilson High School. We had almost 50 students attend and compete for prizes at the event. Fun and learning were at the forefront as our membership team introduced the insurance industry to the students who are considering insurance as a career path. Since the inception of the Boot Camp, the Academy of Finance has seen an increase from 20% to 90+% in the students applying to college.
Last month’s luncheon brought the power of the Star Wars Force to young Make-AWish ambassador, Porter Combs, and family. His wish was granted to go to Disney World in Florida and attend Jedi Training Camp. This was accomplished through the generous efforts of The IIAD and its members, Trusted Choice, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. It was a joy to witness the impact of giving on all that attended. Our next major event will be our Annual Golf Tournament to be held at Dallas Athletic Club on Monday, May 15, 2017. This signature event is an opportunity to network between Agents, Company, and Associate Members. With more than 280 golfers present you are sure to have a good time. There are still sponsorship opportunities available. Keep in mind that you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the event. There are many volunteer positions or you can purchase a dinner ticket to come and enjoy the social event after the tournament. Thank you to all who have participated in our success thus far. Remember, the joy is in the effort and is shared by all!

"At the rate of $10/hour for 120 hours, an intern can be the very best way to “try on” a future employee, educate a student about our industry and receive insight into the next generation and the contributions they can make!"
Iat Woodrow Wilson High School these last four
IAD’s involvement with the Academy of Finance years has had a significant impact. When IIAD first started providing volunteers to the classroom to provide mentors and help teach
the insurance curriculum, twenty percent of the students were applying for college. That number has now exceeded ninety percent. At the IIAD Boot Camp in January, a number of the students expressed an interest in pursuing insurance as a career path at the conclusion of the event. The volunteers on hand spent the day mentoring students, honing their interview skills and giving them business etiquette guidance. As the evaluation forms rolled in from the students, it was apparent that they craved interaction of this type, appreciated the time that was spent, and valued the advice and tips given from our industry professionals.
IIAD is launching a new school for InVEST: Newman Smith High School in Carrollton. With this comes the need for additional volunteers, willing to make a difference. I spent time with the InVEST board in January. They applauded our efforts and effectiveness, and I am confident IIAD is doing the right things when it comes to developing and recruiting fresh talent. We need to continue to put people in the classrooms to share about our industry, and we need to find a way to provide more summer internships. InVEST’s Internship Guide (http://www.investprogram.org/professi onals/recruite-a-graduate/conductinternship) is a useful tool that shows how and where you can utilize a summer intern. At the rate of $10/hour for 120 hours, an intern can be the very best way to “try on” a future employee, educate a student about our industry and receive insight into the next generation and the contributions they can make.
TRIIAD, the other component of IIAD’s approach to finding and training new talent, is starting another session, with more to come throughout the year. We will be offering both AMS360 & Epic training for newly recruited individuals, as well as existing agency personnel. Contact Christina Lehman, TRIIAD Director, for additional information: Christina@iiadallas.org. My staff adopted the motto, “Success in Seventeen” at the beginning of this year. Based on feedback from the Boot Camp and Star Wars Make-aWish Luncheon, we are heading in the right direction. As Yoda so profoundly said, “Do. Or do not. There is no try”. Let us know how we can help you reach your goals in 2017.

Hello IIAD members! I don’t know about you, but 2017 is already flying by for me and my fellow Young Agents! One of my favorite annual events went fantastically, the WWHS Academy of Finance Boot Camp. I don’t take any credit for this awesome event, but was lucky enough to be able to “strut my stuff” alongside fellow YA members. What I mean to say is I helped represent independent agents in the Academy’s Run Way show, where we helped show the students that there are so many fun and unique roles within our industry. Whatever their skillset, there’s a career for them! And we were asked to dance up to the front of the room…what a blast! We’re also just coming off of the Young Agent’s Professional Development Day! We had a packed house to dive deep into liquor liability and fun facts and lingo to know when speaking to a customer. An interesting topic, knowledgeable and entertaining speaker (thanks Kyle Stevens and the Western Security Surplus team!) and a neat location (Taboo Lounge in Dallas- check it out!). The day was a hit so keep your eyes peeled for our next one this year! 2017 is off to a great start and so much lies in the year ahead. Last but not least, the best time of the year is so very close. MARCH MADNESS social event info coming soon! Cheers, Lindsey Kluempers YA President Boyd, Shackelford & Barnett Insurance

Dionne Hilliard, the Academy of Finance Director at WWHS loved watching the boys learn how to tie neckties. “They aren’t learning this in the classroom, and apparently aren’t learning it at home. It is so wonderful that IIAD takes a day to invest in these students.”
WWHS Academy of Finance
BOOT CAMP
2017
n January 20th, IIAD hosted 40 students and their teacher from the Academy of Finance at Woodrow Wilson High School for a day of mentorship-driven learning. The IIAD Board and Staff led the agenda with help from carrier volunteers. The day started with a “Not Your Grandma’s Insurance Industry Style Show” narrated by Errica Rivera of State Auto. Eight volunteers from different backgrounds “modeled” their insurance jobs: Actuary, Sales Director, Underwriter, Claims Manager, IT Manager, Agent, CSR, & Attorney. After strutting down the runway, each model provided the students with a glimpse under the hood of what their role entails, and the skills that enabled them to be successful. The students engaged the models with questions to gain a better understanding of each job, including the educational requirements and how the various positions interact with the others. The students were just as interested in the “how” of the career options as they were in the “why” the models liked insurance and how they got into the business. The high schoolers were then split into groups by gender, to hear about dressing for success, and building LinkedIn Profiles. The guys’ group, led by Oscar Silva of Great America, and Gary Lindsey of Hotchkiss Insurance Agency, learned how to tie their neckties, while the ladies learned how to gauge appropriate skirt lengths. “I was struck by the difference between what they are allowed to do in school, and what we would consider appropriate for a job interview,” commented Annabel Williams, Regional Sales Director at AIG, and IIAD’s InVEST Committee Co-chair. “The students wear a uniform plaid skirt that is to come down to their fingertips in length. That is too short for the workplace.”
The majority of the remaining time was spent mentoring the students in small groups on interview skills and helping them to prepare an elevator pitch. The high school juniors also spent time interacting with some students from UNT. The high school students provided feedback at the end, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with mentors and practice honing their interview skills. “Everything was very useful, and I appreciate that they took time out of their day to tell us about what they do, and encourage us to follow our dreams, and how insurance can open up opportunities.” The students competed against each other for prizes, and three reached the top level by sharing their elevator pitch with the group, and then awaiting the judges’ decision. The top prizes were $200 cash, a laptop and an ipad mini. A special thank you goes to Enya He for sharing her personal story, and to Lloyds for sponsoring the event. Also, Travelers provided nice padfolios for the students. Allen & Connor Sparks of Independent Insurance Group cooked a tasty lunch of burgers and chicken. All of the Boot Camp volunteers came away feeling a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in knowing they helped the students prepare for their futures, while sharing a little something about our great industry. Hail Litigation Reform IIAT supports meaningful reform for runaway litigation following a catastrophic event. Likewise, the association supports efforts of TLR and TCJL that will reduce frivolous claims which threaten the marketplace in affected areas of the state. Reserve the right to go to the courthouse Ensure that the courthouse is the last resort when disputing a claim Preserve a competitive market place Common-sense reform

Provide insurance for 80% of the business in Texas, representing about $9.6 billion in premiums. Provide homeowners and auto insurance for nearly 30% of the families in Texas. Operate offices in all but 35 of Texas, 254 countries. Employ nearly 14,000 people in Texas, over 3,000 of which have ownership in the local agencies. Are free to place a customer's insurance with any company the agency represents. It is not uncommon for the agency to represent more than a dozen insurance companies. Do not set insurance prices or pay claims. Agents evaluate the insurance needs of customers and recommend the best coverage to meet their needs. Are a diverse group of small business owners. About 60% of IIAT members employ four or fewer people, while some agencies employ hundreds of people.
Retail agents have historically struggled with the issue of following a confusing status as it relates to placement with a surplus lines market. IIAT believes that larger sophisticated commercial insurance purchasers can make an educated decision about what option is the best for their specific circumstance.
Coverage Change Notificaiton The Insurance Code requires that notification of changes in coverage must be provided; however, there is not requirement of where the notification is located or when the notification must be made. Plain language notification must disclose in renewal policy Provide notice to agent and customer prior to use of new policy form Clarifies that proper notification does not require nonrenewal notice
" The number one reason to join the association is for the relationships with the people. You will make a network of friends that you can call when you have coverage issues, or problems within the agency. You develop friends that you can call and lean on, and that has been the greatest gift". Lee Loftis, IIAT Government Affairs Director

Honoring IIAD Past Presidents!
T he IIAD January 2017 Luncheon was dedicated to the IIAD Past
Presidents. On January 18, 2017 at Bent Tree Country Club IIAD held a 2 hour continuing education class presented by Heather Billingslea of Chubb. The CE topic was "Ethics."
Following the CE class was the IIAD luncheon. At the luncheon registration the IIAD Past Presidents received a rose and was seated at their reserved table. Stephen Pine of Patterson and Associates, did the invocation and read off the names of all Past Presidents in attendance. They all stood and were recognized (see above picture of the IIAD Past Presidents that were present). Our special guest were: Dionne Hilliard, Director of the Academy of Finanace at Woodrow Wilson High School, Steven Ewing, Principal of Woodrow Wilson High School, Joseph Gonzalez, the Academy of Finance Director & Instructor at Adamson High School, Janie Ortega the Principal at Adamson High School, Luis Navarro student (and starting quarterback, with aspirations of owning his own insurance agency) of Adamson High School, Denise Tucker, the Director and Teacher at the Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship Academy, and Sarah Ritsema, the Principal of Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship Academy (IDEA for short). The speaker for that day was Jeff McKissack with Defense by Design. Jeff presented the importance of "Agent Safety." Millennial Employees 3.
4. Recognize both the positives and negatives. Just like their interest in constant feedback, Millennials’ drive and passion for their careers is fueled through recognition. Use your regular feedback meetings as a time to recognize both positive and negative elements of their work. Recognition can come in a variety of forms, but it’s best to think outside of the box to give your Millennial employees a little something extra — raises, promotions and rewards do the trick for grand accomplishments.
With ambition and drive to boot, Millennials are the perfect candidates for mentorship programs. This generation also values guidance and strong personal relationships — two things which establish the perfect environment for mentorship. Give your entry-level hiring a boost by establishing a mentorship program within your company. Pair Millennial workers with wiser generations to allow them to gain a new perspective on their career while also creating a level of reverse mentorship. Mentors will gain the Millennial perspective while also having a chance to share their many success stories and challenges. This will bring your employees together to learn from each other and improve productivity and personal growth.

1. 2.
Millennials need more than the standard annual performance review. In fact, 80 percent of surveyed Millennials said they would prefer to receive feedback in real time. Open up a two-way chain of communication by scheduling bi-weekly meetings with your Millennial employees to dish out feedback and also open the door to a variety of pressing questions. While this generation craves flexibility, they also require a level of structure. By developing a give-andtake communicative relationship, you will create a more cohesive working environment where they’ll be willing to not only work harder, but achieve more in the long run.
With 81 percent of Millennials interested in making their own hours at work, being open to flexibility is a must when it comes to recruiting, hiring, managing and retaining Generation Y. It’s time to throw out your ideas of employees being tethered to their desks at the standard working hours. Happiness and motivation will come through offering all of your employees, not just Millennials, the ability to tweak their hours to better meet their needs. Consider giving them flextime to allow them to decide when they arrive and leave the office based on a core period of time in which they’re required to make an appearance. You can also establish a telecommuting policy for your employees to work from home on the days when they need to accommodate a busy schedule.
5. With their keen sense of direction and interest in navigating a career, Millennials have made name for themselves in their job-hopping tendencies. Rather than being faced with Millennial turnover, give your employees the opportunity to grow professionally as a part of your company. While your employees may already participate in basic skills and leadership training, give them something more to look forward to by allowing them to suggest what areas they’re interested in improving. Consider investing in new training programs, allowing your employees to cross-train in other departments and positions, and cover the tab as they attend seminars, conferences, and other training-focused events.

It Gets Your Word Out If you want your business to be successful, the service or the product you are offering must be known so that you will have potential buyers. If your business is unknown to the community and you don’t have any kind of communication with your customers you need to use marketing strategies to create awareness for your service or product. Not having proper marketing may cause that potential customers are not aware of any offers your business has to make, and your company can lose the opportunity to expand and become successful. So, if you use marketing to promote your company, it will give you a chance to be discovered by many potential customers.
It Boosts Up Your Sales
Once you had advertised your service, product or company and got it on the radar, you will need to increase your chances of making a sale. The very second this becomes reality, there is a chance that new customers will spread the word and tell their family and friends about your amazing services or the products they have discovered. As they spread their word more and more, your sales will slowly increase. So, if you haven’t used marketing strategies, this would have never happened and, without sales, your business will not be successful.
Gives Your Company Reputation The company’s reputation is one big factor which decides whether your business will be successful or not. Having good marketing helps you build your brand name. When you set high expectations for your company in the public eye, then your company will stand on a firmer ground. So, when your reputation grows, it will increase your sales and expand your business. To build a good reputation for your company, you have to actively participate in community programs, have effective communication both internally and externally and offer quality services and products to support your marketing and make your efforts worthwhile.
Gives You Healthy Competition Marketing makes room in the marketplace for a little healthy competition. When you present your prices via marketing, it reaches the potential customers but it also reaches other businesses who are selling in the same industry. Like there are monopoly companies that put the prices they want on certain services and products, there is marketing which generates competition between businesses who are trying to win over customers before their competing company does. If there wasn’t for this healthy competition, monopoly companies would sell their products and other companies wouldn’t stand a chance in the marketplace. So, marketing enables both small and new business to grow and enter the marketplace.
What To Have In Mind Even though marketing is very important for every business to be successful, have in mind that it can be very expensive. It may happen that a business can spend almost half of its revenue on marketing in the very first year. After that, your marketing budget will approximately be 30% and maybe sometimes more. In order for your company to have the best chance of succeeding, the best form of marketing will be to use mixed and different forms of marketing, like website development, print and the broadcast form of advertising, as well as public relations, designing and printing materials and maybe some special events, like trade shows.
