PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS If you aren’t aware of the opportunities for networking, promoting our industry and giving back to the community, then today is the day to find out what you have been missing.

The IIAD is the hub of the insurance industry in North Texas. If you aren’t aware of the opportunities for networking, promoting our industry and giving back to the community, then today is the day to find out what you have been missing.

First, the Inaugural IIAD Sporting Clay Tournament “Shooting for the Future” is right around the corner on September 21st. Our goal is to raise enough money for a scholarship endowment that will give a deserving candidate the opportunity to earn a college degree. We still have sponsorships available!

Speaking of the future, don’t forget to encourage your Young Agents and Account Managers to take advantage of the many events sponsored by the YAs throughout the year. Nothing is more important to our young professionals than building enduring relationships within the industry.

Don’t forget about our monthly luncheons. If you haven’t been in a while, please join us. If you are a regular, please invite a guest. The best way to enhance our association is to get more people involved.

Our big Spring event is the golf tournament. Make sure to register early, as it always fills up fast. The best part of the tournament seeing all our sponsors on the course.

And Finally, THE premier event for the Insurance industry in North Texas… The Jim Millerman Insurance Convention. This is where it all comes together. The is the best place to forge new relationships and see old friends. If you are looking for solutions for your clients, this is the place to be. All your underwriters and associate members will be there eager to share how they can help your clients.

All of this culminates with our Communities Foundation endowment that allows us to make annual donations to deserving charities. Each year our board nominates charitable organizations to be the recipients of our donations. Nothing is more rewarding than the opportunity to support these special charities that are really making a difference in our community. We need your support and passion to continue the commitment of excellence for our association. ur office was blessed with another high school intern over the summer. If you haven’t considered hiring a student, I’ve got to tell you that you are missing the boat. The high school students are full of life and knowledge about technology.

They can provide so much oxygen to an office while lightening the load of your existing workers. Please check out Jennifer Romero’s article and video (see page 25). She interviewed a number of other IIAD members’ interns, and I think you will find her discussions enlightening.

I’d like to send a special shout out to DISD for sponsoring Ms. Romero through the Dallas Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program.

This was the 10th anniversary of the program, and almost 400 students received internships this summer. The learning experiences and workplace skills they attained has laid the foundation towards their future success in college and the workforce. Our intern is contemplating a future career in the Insurance Industry as a result of her work here this summer!

IIAD is taking on a new event this year: Sporting Clays. The tournament is September 21st, 2017 at the Dallas Gun Club, and our goal is to fundraise for scholarships, We have a sustainable and future endeavors that are model that is producing consistent with our Mission. I results that are consistent like that it is drawing in with our Mission, “Serving members that haven’t participated in other IIAD and Strengthening events. While we can’t be Independent Insurance everything to all people, we Agents through Education, can be something to most.

Lastly, I want to let you know that the outpouring of I want to take a moment to support for Cameron Lindsey express my gratitude for (daughter of Gary & Rachel Bruce Sams’ leadership over this past year. Bruce, and the Lindsey) has been heartwarming for me and my entire Board, has done a staff. Every day, we cheer as fantastic job of staying the course on our governance, and we watch the donations come in! It has been a joy to see our providing solid direction for association rally together for our future. We have a this sweet, precious family. YA President s I sit down to write this article many of our fellow Texans are living a nightmare.

Massive flooding, entire neighborhoods destroyed, belongings lost and in some cases the loss of loved ones. During these times of crisis, it warms my heart to see people reaching out and helping one another. The out pouring of support, be it monetary, donations, or even people loading up their vehicles and driving to South Texas with their boats to help recuse people.

Times like these remind me why we as Young Agents do what we do. Networking is a big part of our groups efforts each year but is not the sole focus of our group. More importantly the Young Agents spend time each year volunteering for a number of organizations. This year we will be focusing our volunteer efforts at City Square. City Square is a Dallas based non-profit charity that fights the cause and effect of poverty through service, advocacy and friendship.

Young Agents across Dallas will be coming together in the upcoming months to volunteer, fundraise and raise awareness for this wonderful organization.

No matter your reason for volunteering or how much or little time you give, being part of something bigger than yourself is always rewarding.

The candidate “snap shots” describe their skills sets, experience, and position they are looking for. GIFT OF GIVING

IAD’s Mission Statement is “Serving and Strengthening Independent Insurance IAgents through Education, Perpetuation and Promotion of Goodwill”.

Annually, the Board votes to send disbursements from our Communities Foundation of Texas fund to local charities as a way of giving back to the community and fulfilling our mission of promoting goodwill. This summer, the IIAD board delivered five donation checks to charities in Dallas and Allen: 1) Make-a-Wish of North Texas, 2) Attitudes and Attire, 3) Camp Esperanza, 4) Allen Community Outreach, and 5) ChristianWorks for Children.

What’s funny about each of these visits, is that although IIAD was giving to a charity, they were giving right back to us. Isn’t that the way goodness work?

The Board & I learned how the charities provide wishes to sick children, help women in need and vets transition into work life, send young cancer patients to camp, feed and clothe the impoverished, and help children and their families meet and overcome even the most difficult challenges in their lives. It was heartwarming to hear about their good works, and know that IIAD could contribute in their efforts to help others.

A snippet about each of these worthy causes follows. All are seeking volunteers to help them in their missions, should you feel so led.

Make-a-Wish North Texas: For those that are regular attendees of IIAD’s annual convention (Jim Millerman Insurance Convention) and our February Philanthropic luncheon, you are aware that Make-a-Wish has a soft spot in our hearts. The chapter in Irving annually serves over 550 children with life-threatening medical conditions, by granting their wishes. To date, over 8,500 wishes have been granted by the North Texas chapter. While the wishes ranged from “I wish to swim with the dolphins” to “I wish to be a firefighter for a day”, they all had one thing in common – each wish played a significant role in improving a deserving child’s quality of life”, per Scotty Landry, President & CEO. IIAD, in partnership with Trusted Choice, has been able to grant one wish a year for the past 4 years, including a special horse trailer for a barrel racing teen. Our Young Agents raised money at the IIAD Golf tournament in May for Make-a-Wish, with a dunk tank. IICF matched the dunk tank proceeds, so in addition to our board’s donation, there was another check presentation to make even more dreams come true. This fall, IIAD’s YA group will combine forces with IIATC’s YAs for a trivia night, to raise additional funds for Make-aWish. And, we will again be orchestrating an IIAD Toy Drive in December for Make-a-Wish, to fill up their toy closet. The Wish Granters use the toys in the closet to bring joy to the hospital rooms while children are waiting for their wishes to be granted

Attitudes and Attire: The IIAD Board chose to recognize Attitudes & Attires as it closely aligns with other career oriented initiatives of the association. One example is our annual Finance Boot Camp, part of our INVEST program for high school students. During the camp, volunteers coach students on how to “Dress for Success” as well as mentoring students on effective interview techniques and how to craft an elevator speech.

The daylong event is an opportunity to introduce students to the great big world of insurance – a noble profession where career opportunities are endless.

Since 1996 Attitudes & Attires has been dedicated to promoting personal growth for women seeking self-sufficiency. Since the agency's inception, more than 21,000 women have acquired tools to build the confidence they need to succeed. With this year’s donation, IIAD recognized an opportunity to introduce the women being touched

by Attitudes & Attires to the possibility of insurance careers.

Over the 21 years of service, the average number of women per year who are served by Attitudes & Attires has grown to 1300. Those served can choose to participate in multiple programs such as the following: • Core Program - focusing on job readiness and self-esteem.

• Hopeful Smiles - a partnership with area dentists to restore oral appearance of women in need.

• Boots to Heels - assisting women in the military community with the transition from military to civilian life by focusing on job readiness.

The goal of Attitudes & Attires is to help each woman leave with a renewed sense of self-worth, empowerment, and motivation on her journey. IIAD is proud to support the efforts of Attitudes & Attires and the programs they provide to many who are striving to move forward in a self-sufficient lifestyle. Camp Esperanza: This is a weeklong camp for kids who have or had cancer and underwent treatment at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. It’s a week where the kids are away from the hospital and they are surrounded by kids who are exactly the same as they are. The purpose of The Bridewell Foundation is to raise money to fund Camp Esperanza which is free of charge to all campers.

Camp Esperanza could have never come to fruition without the vision of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bridewell. In 1982, they approached Children’s Medical Center of Dallas with the idea of establishing a fund to provide a summer camping experience for children being treated for cancer. Mr. Bridewell, himself a cancer patient, laid the groundwork for the establishment of an endowment to fund the camp. In May of 1982, Mr. Bridewell died and the endowment was formed.

Memorials were given in his honor to further ensure the camp’s beginning. The Bridewell Foundation was established and the first campers participated in Camp Esperanza in 1983.

The cost of providing a one week camping experience for each camper is $500.00 and $70,000.00 is needed to operate camp each year. The donation by the IIAD will fund a week of camp for several good kids who are fighting like crazy to beat cancer!!!! IIAD Board Member Matt Orlie is also a board member of the Bridewell Foundation, and we appreciate him shining the light on this organization.

Allen Community Outreach: On Friday afternoon, July 28th, the IIAD Board presented a check to Allen Community Outreach (ACO) at the direction of Ben Patterson, ex-officio member of the board. “Having lived in the community for the past 15 years, I have watched how this organization helps those in need here locally and it is great to give to this great organization”, stated Ben. “My father, Ron, brings his garden excess for the pantry”, said a smiling Ben Patterson. “It was great to see how this organization helps their community and IIAD is proud to assist with this contribution!”

ACO offers a computer lab to help with resume building, case managers, financial counselors to help families avoid hunger and homelessness, a resale store and food pantry, a community treasure chest and a boutique with furniture and higher end resale items in Waters Creek. The ACO targets families in Allen, Fairview and Lucas. Over 7000 items are donated monthly for the resale store, and over 30,000 pounds of food are received, primarily from Wal-Mart, Target and Sprouts.

Of particular interest in our visit was learning of the increasing poverty levels in Collin County. Over 50% of the Collin County resident’s income goes to rent, because of their high housing costs. If a car breaks down or a family member gets sick, the impoverished struggle to pay their bills. The first cutback is always food.

The Food Pantry provides emergency food four times a year for anyone that needs food. Beyond that, they will create a relationship to set up a scheduled time to shop the pantry. The pantry is very similar to a grocery store, with staples, fresh produce and frozen meat and vegetables. They service 500 families a month, which is up from 400 families per month last year, and 200 per month in 2015. As the city has grown, so has the need to provide this service.

ChristianWorks for Children: IIAD Board delivered a check to ChristianWorks for Children, led by Director Ron Pine, on July 19th. This organization has a 50 year history in the Dallas Fort Worth community of equipping children, families, and individuals with tools to navigate life’s toughest challenges. They believe, no matter the makeup, family is the foundation of our society. Thus, building healthy homes and families is their purpose.

With a network of over 30 Christian principled licensed professional counselors and social workers, the organization offers programs and services intentionally designed to help children, individuals, couples and families gain healing and restored hope for a healthier life.

In addition to therapeutic counseling, ChristianWorks for Children offers free support groups using a specifically designed curriculum for children, teens and their care givers for help in navigating (1) the death of a loved one, (2) divorce of parents, (3) becoming a blended family, and (4) post adoption difficulties.

ChristianWorks, through its AdoptionWorks program is also a Licensed Adoption Agency by the state of Texas helping create families through adoption.
