“Serving and strengthening Independent Insurance Agents through education, perpetuation and promotion of goodwill.”

A

s President of our Association I want to announce, the IIAD (Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas) has a new Mission Statement. Last Thursday was IIAD’s annual convention, trade show and marketing event formerly known as “All Industry Day” held at the Irving Convention Center. What a great day it was to have near one thousand agent, company and associate members in one place focused on the success of our Independent Agency Distribution System. The event was first envisioned by Jim Millerman the IIAD President in 1987. He had the vision and foresight to see the need for an event of this kind. Jim is no longer with us but his legacy lives on and the IIAD will be renaming their annual signature event posthumously in his honor. During the convention IIAD introduced a new mission statement: “Serving and strengthening Independent Insurance Agents through education, perpetuation and promotion of goodwill.” It means that we are continuing to serve the industry we all love by facilitating opportunities to better our membership. I would like to mention two of the initiatives that are the embodiment of this vision. IES (Insurance Employment Service) is the placement arm of IIAD supplying entry level to industry expert employees to our members at steep discounts from industry standard rates. John Spicer is the Executive Director of IES. He is a staffing expert with years of experience and a passion for serving our members and industry. Currently the service has over 40 candidates ready to see you. Christina Lehman is Director of TRIIAD (Training and Recruiting Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas). She is making great headway toward training the next generation of entry level service staff for agencies looking to hire new people into the agency workforce. Christina is a graduate of West Texas A & M with a degree in Business. If you are looking for an entry level licensed employee with knowledge of AMS 360 or Applied Epic management software, look no further, she has trained them and they are available through Insurance Employment Services. I am so proud to be President of the IIAD and the efforts it is making toward this lofty mission statement instituted by Tammy Land our Executive Director.

IIAD has done much this year, but I think by far the biggest accomplishment was the addition to staff, enabling a dedicated focus to TRIIAD (Training and Recruiting for IIAD.

Looking back and looking forward!

YOUNG AGENTS PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS "The value of strong relationships is one of my favorite characteristics of our industry and what really makes it a special place to build a young Cookies and carols means that person’s career!"

016 was a great year for both IIAD and the Dallas Young Agent group. I’m still trying to figure out where the time has gone, but I can’t say enough about the group, the energy and what lies ahead in 2017! First off, I’d like to thank our sponsors this year who have made it possible for us to continue providing networking events for our young people to build relationships with their peers in the industry. The value of strong relationships is one of my favorite characteristics of our industry and what really makes it a special place to build a young person’s career foundation. We couldn’t do it without you!

In addition to networking events, and what I’m most proud of so far, was the money we were able to raise at this year’s YA Wine toss at All Industry Day. Because of generous donations of wine (big shout out to everyone who helped us!) and the full day of participation from everyone at the event, we were able to raise $1,525 to go towards Dallas CASA. This money will make a huge difference for the children as we roll into the holidays. From all of us with Dallas YA, THANK YOU for your energy, participation and overall awesomeness. You helped us make a difference this holiday season.

2017 is upon us, and I couldn’t be more excited for the busy year that lies ahead. We have plans to help feed thousands of folks by donating food and putting together sandwiches with Tango Tab. This year’s Academy of Finance Boot Camp with Woodrow Wilson High School is coming up and is sure to be a success. Our volunteer group helps to prepare high school students to strengthen resumes, interview skills and other essential skills that they will need as they prepare themselves for strong career paths. This is just one small piece of how we’re working to help attract strong, driven young folks into our industry, and to have some fun while doing so! From all of us with Dallas Young Agents, we want to wish you a happy holiday season. Bring on 2017!

Lindsey Kluempers YA President

HELPING......EASY AS PIE!

L

ike many in our industry, Hotchkiss Insurance believes in giving back. It is important that we recognize our blessings and strive to benefit all people, in both business and community. If it so happens that we can have a good time doing it, then the stars have aligned nicely. This October, Hotchkiss Helps decided to have a little fun with Halloween. It was determined that twelve participants would volunteer to receive a pie in the face, at work, in work clothes, regardless of other meetings or appointments. People would then donate money to specific participants, and at the end of the contest, the top three participants with the highest donations in their name would be pied. As an added incentive, the top three donators got the pieshoving honors. Then the mayhem began. We had no idea this would be so successful, or that we would have so much fun. Various groups joined forces to ensure their ‘favorite’ person was in the top three; truces would be made and alliances would be broken. Votes were cast, donations made, and the landscape started to clearly appear. Then, during the last two days of the competition, a grassroots movement developed, and upended the results of the whole thing. Investors strategically re allocated their donations at the last minute, resulting in an unexpected finish. The top three earners were Doug Duncan ($540), Brad Burnham ($420), and Hunter Ramsey ($410). The event raised $2005 on its own; and Hotchkiss Insurance generously committed to matching all raised funds, for a grand total of $4,010. Hotchkiss Helps is the philanthropic arm of Hotchkiss Insurance Agency, and I am fortunate to be associated with the people who donate their time and effort into these important endeavors. The funds collected by Hotchkiss Helps are used to help support charitable foundations like Community Partners of Denton County, Agape Resource & Assistance Center, and The American Cancer Society. Hotchkiss Helps has donated 35 turkeys for Thanksgiving for the past three consecutive years, raised money for ALS research and support, sponsored Christmas for victims of domestic violence, and helped provide medical equipment for families in need. The point is not to be selfcongratulatory. The point is that we all desire to help; 15. and if you can shove a pie in someone’s face while you do it, all the better.

Devin Wright

Devin Wright is a MakeaWish recipient. During IIAD's All Industry Day event Devin gave the invocation and was presented a check for $7500 by Scotty Landry, President & CEO of a MakeaWish North Texas. Her wish was to get a horse trailer to travel to rodeos and barrel races. Thanks to IIAD & Trusted Choice for making all of this possible! About Devin Devin was diagnosed October 14, 2014 which was a month and a half before she turned 18 and also her senior year of high school. She was queen of her high school rodeo team and even though she missed over half of her rodeos due to being in the hospital, she still managed to place 1st in 2 divisions at the North Texas High School Rodeo Association. She is planning to attend North Central Texas College in the fall of 2017. She is interested in pursing a career in photography, but her barrel racing will always come first so she will be riding on the NCTC rodeo team. Since she received her "wish trailer" she has been able to travel to rodeos and barrel races and has placed in almost all of them. Her trailer has been an amazing asset to her barrel racing career because she still struggles with fatigue, seizures and neuropathy.

NAMING CONTEST! D

Article by IIAD Staff

On November 30, 2016, three organizations came together at Woodrow Wilson High School in East Dallas to donate $5,000 to the Academy of Finance for student enrichment. The organizations are The East Dallas Exchange Club, a civic club that helps public school kids, The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, dedicated to assisting communities to enrich lives, and Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas, a membership organization that promotes goodwill within the community.

$5000 Donation to the Academy of Finance at WWHS! Dionne Hilliard, Director of the Academy of Finance at Woodrow Wilson High School, received the check donation, along with three of her insurance students: Jake Patin, Armando Navarro & Kullen Smith. “It means a great deal to Woodrow Wilson’s Academy of Finance to receive such a generous donation today. I am excited for the many opportunities it will open up for our students, and even more thrilled to have wonderful partners to help encourage our students to learn more, do more, and be great!” The Academy of Finance has flourished with the help of the school’s business partners. This donation will go towards scholarships, business clothing for student interviews and professional development of the two insurance classes.

On hand to make the presentation were members of all three organizations, including the President of The East Dallas Exchange Club, Tim Webster, & President of IIAD Bruce Sams. Absent from the presentation, but instrumental in bringing the three organizations together for a single cause was Bill Henry, CEO/Chairman of MHBT, A Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC Company. Henry is former Board Chair of the IICF Southeast Division, and a longtime member of IIAD. He also has ties to the 29. East Dallas Exchange Club.

Luncheon Speaker Jan Kearbey (Service Lloyds)

IIAD'S CSR APPRECIATION LUNCHEON 2016 When people feel good at work, when leadership takes a personal interest, when

people get a chance to do what they do best, are recognized and rewarded for a job well done, they do better work. This is exactly what IIAD has realized, which is why we decided to hold a luncheon recognizing all of our hard working CSR's. The luncheon was free to all CSR's who wanted to attend and various agencies and their principals were on hand to join in recognition and reward of these hard workers. There were over 70 CSR's in attendance. We know that agencies would not be able to run as smoothly without the CSRs' dedication. Associate members were encouraged to bring a special gift to recognize each CSR. Jan Kearbey of Service Lloyds provided an inspirational presentation, full of wisdom gleaned from her many years in the insurance industry.
