Executive Address We are catching a breath after All Industry Day. Did you realize our event on November 5th marked the 25th year that IIAD has hosted an annual conference? The first was in 1988 at the Sheraton Park Central Hotel, with around 250 attendees and 70 vendors. This year, there were nearly 1000 attendees at the Irving Convention Center in Las Colinas, and close to 100 vendors. The committee’s work over the last 12 months was evident in the near-flawless execution of the day. We can’t thank the committee enough for their commitment and dedication. And we express gratitude to Lance Goff, who skillfully has led the committee for countless years, and is turning over the reins to new leadership in 2014. Please see our public letter of appreciation to Lance in this edition, along with our thanks to the many sponsors, exhibitors, panelists and volunteers. So many people to thank….so little time. We heard so many positive comments about the Irving Convention Center that we have booked it again for the coming year. The date for IIAD’s All Industry Day 2014 is Wednesday, November 5th. We have a big election on Tuesday, November 4th, so we thought it best to move to Wednesday. People have already asked how we will top this most recent event. I think the best answer is, “Come and see.” Please also save the date for our Big “I” Golf tournament. It will be held on June 2nd at Dallas Athletic Club. We look forward to returning to the recently renovated DAC, our home for the tournament in the 1990’s. If you are interested in joining the Golf Committee, please contact our office. More details in the coming months. Don’t forget to register for our Past President’s January luncheon that will be held January 16th at Bent Tree Country Club. Our guest speaker is Judge Sandy Prindle, a former JP, who is a published author and historian. He will be sharing with us his research on President Abraham Lincoln. We will also be offering two hours of CE on EPLI, taught by Ed Wells of Liberty Mutual. Registration for both is available on our website. The InVest Program at Woodrow Wilson High School will be in full swing again starting in January, and we will be again looking for volunteers for the classroom. We have also received word from the faculty that they need to place a minimum of 18 students in summer internships, up to 100! Please consider how you can help create a spot for one of these aspiring insurance professionals. One of the three WWHS interns that IIAD placed this past summer has decided to pursue insurance as a career, and has applied to U.N.T. Imagine the possibilities as that number grows. If we can inspire a passion for insurance in one school, and eventually export that to other schools, could we potentially solve one of our key problems, that being how do we attract new blood to our industry? I have been invited by InVest to attend a State Champions Workshop the second week of January. The knowledge gleaned will help us to better position our InVest program so that we can reach more students. Florida has one of the strongest InVest programs in the U.S., and my hope is to hunt down the Florida rep and learn as much as I can from him or her. I look forward to sharing with you what I learn. I wish you a healthy and prosperous 2014! - Tammy Land, Executive Director of IIAD

Young Agents’ Presidential Address It is inevitable during the holiday season I see old faces and also some new ones. With a lot of certainty, I can say not all of these people will necessarily understand what I do for a living. In some circles, I have found that my colleagues either neglect to metion or consciously omit that they are a part of the insurance industry. Some do this for fear of receiving negative comments and others to avoid an explanation of what insurance is and why it is necessary. For example, one of my own colleagues was heckled in an auditorium of over 200 adults when the presenter asked what he did for a living. In some ways, I can see why it can be intimidating to tell others about our great industry. When asked: “So what do you do for a living?” how do you answer if you are part of the insurance industry? The general population is introduced to insurance because of a compulsory federal, state, or local requirement or contractual stipulation. To this end, most see it as an added cost to conduct their business or life, “a necessary evil.” I’m not entirely sure why people impute this negative connotation, but I would wager a guess that it is a lack of knowledge. The lumping together of all financial services sectors; carless financial behavior by some; lack of stability in the economy; and federal regulations like the Affordable Care Act have not made this easier on us as an industry. So what can we do to educate those around us about the importance of insurance and the impact it has on the overall economy? In the state of Texas, there is a curriculum that was created by the Texas Department of Insurance. The study material can be taught in a matter of 100 minutes and can be introduced as early as 8th grade. Unfortunately, I have never heard of any school taking advantage of this study material. I would opine that this is due to an emphasis on other subjects and increased scrutiny for public educators to produce results to increase scores in Math and Science . I don’t see the TDI program being adopted by many school districts, which leads me to post-high school education. Based on statistics from the National Center for Education, from 1975 to 2011 only 51% of graduating seniors entered into collegiate education. This automatically left 49% of seniors out of a pool that could possibly have taken a course in insurance. This is of course, unless they entered the industry, consciously pursued information in this regard, or were affected by it because of a life or business situation. Out of the 51% how many do you think pursued a business degree or attended a higher learning institution that had a course in insurance? Based on these stats, things are looking dismal and yet we wonder why we, as an industry, get a bad rap. Critics question how the insurance industry benefits the economy. The number one contribution is that it allows people to transfer potentially crippling economic risk. Secondly, it creates a capital market similar to banks through its share holders’ investments and premiums. To what magnitude is this effect? According to the US Department of Commerce at the end of 2012 the insurance industry accounted for 2.6% of the Gross Domestic Product of our great country. In dollars that is a little over 15 billion. The insurance industry as of 2012 employs 2.4 million people, that is more than the total population of Houston (est.2012 US Census). About 1.4 million of those people work for an insurance company and the rest are insurance agents, brokers or are in insurance-related services. They also pay approximately $16.7 billion in premium taxes from the $1.4 trillion in written premiums they have. Finally, they invest $1.4 trillion in stocks and $2.1 trillion in bonds, according to the Insurance Information Institute insurance industry recap of 2012. I would say we are kind of a big deal in our economy. So now let’s move to what hits home for us. The day we no longer need to borrow money to buy property, autos, and machinery; can pay out of pocket for medical care; stop suing each other; can stop mother-nature and catastrophic events; or simply stop worrying about losing valuable people and possessions; we might minimize the overall value of insurance. Even if these things were possible, we would never get rid of the risk that exists regardless of how carefully we plan and behave. It is unfortunate that some of our close family, friends, and neighbors may have experienced difficulties with insurance in the past. That is truly why I enjoy what I do; because I want people to trust me as a resource when they are having difficulty understanding their insurance needs. I want to encourage all of you to get the word out and be proud of the great industry that affords us this living and sustains us and our families. We don’t do this for charity, we are heavily regulated, we pay our fare share, we contribute to the economy, and ultimately benefit society in many ways. Let’s pave the way for the next wave of experts by continuing to learn our craft, educate others, and by providing good service within our means. Who knows, maybe in the next couple of decades there may be a shift in the way people regard us. -Jose Flores, Young Agents President 9

2013 IIAD Volunteer of the Year What makes a great volunteer at IIAD? It is someone that gives unselfishly of their time, with a genuine smile on their face. It is a person that not only takes on committee work, but also looks for new ways to benefit the organization as a whole. They show up and ask what they can do to help…..and then they do it. Christi White of State Auto is this year’s IIAD Volunteer of the Year. Christi spent countless hours making calls to solicit sponsors to raise money for All Industry Day and our Golf tournament, and then volunteered to work the registration tables for both of those events. She also took on a very special project this past year with the purpose of growing our membership. Christi spent several days of her time interviewing members of our association and asking them what benefit they derived from being a member of IIAD. You can see the culmination of her work (and that of the other Membership committee members) in a video that we proudly display on our website. Christi has actively recruited new members for IIAD since moving here from Houston several years ago, and is our “Welcoming Committee” at each luncheon, where she greets new members and makes sure that they feel welcome. We couldn’t do what we do without Christi White, and so today, we want her to know how much she means to this organization.

House Bill 5 Overview
41
House Bill 5 in Regards to the Independent Insurance Industry House Bill 5 was signed by Governor Perry on June 10, 2013. The bill is relevant and pertinent to the Independent Insurance Industry, in that is essentially requires high school students to be “career ready” before they graduate. We can be strategic in helping the districts educate the students for business, particularly insurance. House Bill 5 should be viewed as a gateway opportunity to help independent insurance get “into schools” and bring the younger generation into our industry.
