This issue of the IIDENTIDAD Newsletter briefly documents the academic activities developed by the Institute members during the month of November and early December. This edition highlights the Institute's internal organization to meet the committed purposes in the Institutional Development Plan and prepare the ground that will largely guide the activities continuing this next year. Among the main stories is the oath taken in their degree examinations from significant number of graduates class 2010 of the Master in Educational Sciences, the First Report of Activities of Dr. Joaquin Caso Niebla, the meeting of the REDIE Board and diverse exchange activities and academic counseling for national and foreign IES.

Moreover, in IIDENTIDAD No. 6 is documented the IIDE's academic presence in the community through the publication and presentation of a book recording the memories of the town settlers. We take this opportunity to wish you happy holidays, a very prosperous 2013, and success in all personal and professional projects.


Project of the month "Social Development Program IIDE-UABC Ensenada". Since 2004, Dr. Lucia Coral Aguirre Muñoz coordinates the social service program "Social Development Program UABC Ensenada," which aims to contribute to the integral formation of the student based on problem solving in different neighborhoods of the city. This professional social service program and professional practice in which students can participate in any professional career from UABC is oriented to identify the needs of the community and find a solution from the academic knowledge and skills that students acquire in college. Among the activities involved in this program are: advising elementary school children, schools for parents, Mathematics and English advising for children, craft classes to elderly people, care for victims of violence, neighborhood organization and educational talks, among others. This project, which annually enroll about 40 students who serve to an average of 500 people, has been funded by the Consortium for Higher Education in North America (CONAHEC) and the UABC itself through of different calls, receiving in 2008 the National Social Service Award by the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education (ANUIES).

Dr. Lucia Coral Aguirre Muñoz holds a B.A. in Sociology from the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico; degree in Interdisciplinary Studies of Social Change at the University of Nice, France, Master and Doctor in Educational Sciences from the Universidad Iberoamericana Noroeste. She has worked in education in rural and urban areas at all levels of the educational system. She has worked in human resources training for teaching, research and management, particularly in Baja California. Her areas of interest are university pedagogy, sociology of education and humanistic education. She has been coordinator of post graduate programs at the IIDE and Assistant Principal of the institute.

The developed activities are part of several lines of research whose results were presented in journals, in national and international conferences, in thesis and in the publication of two books ("Meeting of the University with the neighborhood: knowledge, learning and community development" and "Infonavit Punta Banda: History of a community standing"), under the coordination of Dr. Aguirre. Among the colonies that have benefited from these activities are Valle Dorado 7, Punta Banda, Ejercito de Salvacion, 89, Maneadero, Montemar and Villa Colonial. Books coordinated by Dr. Aguirre.

News of the month Principal of the IIDE rends first report of Activities. Under the principle of accountability and the promotion of transparency and evaluation culture, on December 14th took place the First Report of Activities 2011-2012 of the current administration of the IIDE, UABC, by Dr. Joaqu铆n Caso Niebla, Principal of the IIDE. In this first report was informed about the progress in policy and initiatives integrated with the strategies, actions and goals set for each of the basic functions that define the work of the Institute, allowing to identify the challenges and commitments still awaiting the IIDE and its administration. Meanwhile, Prof. Hector Baro Angulo, president of the Governing Board recognized the importance of the contribution of the IIDE at an international level inviting the community to continue serving with research and educational development, several needs at the University. Attending the presentation were members from the Technical Research Council of the IIDE; Prof. Hector Baro Angulo, president of the Governing Board; Dr. Edna Luna Serrano, member of the Governing Board and Dr. Oscar Roberto L贸pez Bonilla, Vice Rector of UABC Campus Ensenada.

The event was also attended by managers from different academic units of the current UABC and academic community, staff and student community of the IIDE. The First Report of Activities 2011-2012 to be available from December 14th on the link http://iide.ens.uabc.mx.

Due to the experience of Dr. Szurmuk on cultural studies and the professional relationship that unites them, Dr. Bonilla requested her cooperation in this particular research.

Technical Research Council of the IIDE has a work meeting. On November 21st in a work session the members of the Technical Research Council of the IIDE met in order to discuss the proposed agenda which included the following topics: a) Proposal for Academic Merit Award 2012; b) monitoring the design and development of the Institute's website, c) schedule of activities for the end of the year, and d) general issues.

This year there were five meetings of the Technical Council, regardless of the open meeting scheduled for December 14th where the IIDE's Principal presented his first report of activities.

New generation of teachers graduated in Educational Sciences from the IIDE. During the months of November and December, nine students of the Master in Educational Sciences, class 2010, presented and approved satisfactorily their degree test. In this regard, the following stands: Eduardo Mariscal Chavez presented the thesis entitled "Relationship between the result of an admission exam and socioeconomic status of applicants to the Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Baja California and “Federal Lazaro Cardenas High School", under the direction of Prof. Martin Rosas Morales. The committee was integrated by Dr. Luis Lizasoain Hernandez, Professor from the University of the Basque Country, Dr. Virginia Velasco Ariza, academic of the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences (FCAYS) of UABC and Dr. Norma Larranzolo Reyna, IIDE researcher.

Valeria Cantu Gonzalez presented the research "Health issues and academic achievement in secondary schools in California", with the tutorship of Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez Macias. In his committee attended Drs. Luis Angel Contreras Niño and Guadalupe Tinajero Villavicencio, IIDE researchers.

Sofia Contreras Roldan presented the thesis "Environmental Attitudes of high school students in Baja California: Personal and academic characteristics associated", under the direction of Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez Macias. Drs. Armando Sánchez Martínez, member of the Honorary Board of the National Academy of Environmental Education, and Dr. Joaquín Caso Niebla and Luis Angel Contreras Niño, IIDE academics, served as Board examiners. Noe Canseco Ramirez passed his grade by defending the thesis entitled "The teaching philosophy in high school: between disciplinary field and the field of education." His thesis committee was integrated by Drs. Guadalupe Lopez Bonilla (Director) and Guadalupe Tinajero Villavicencio, IIDE researchers; Dr. Célida de los Angeles Godina Herrera, an academic at the Universidad Autonoma de Puebla, and Prof..Marie Antonieta Rodriguez Linares, UABC academic.

Martin Alonso Mercado Varela presented the research "Profile of applicants accepted and not accepted at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California and its relation to the Examen de Habilidades y Conocimientos Basicos (EXHCOBA)". His thesis supervisor was Dr. Norma Larranzolo Reyna and his dissertation committee was composed by Dr. Virginia Velasco Ariza and Prof. Martin Rosas Morales FCAYS academic and IIDE researcher.

Maria Jose Paulina Viveros Riquelme received her degree of Master Educational Sciences after presenting a thesis entitled "Development of an Academic Density Index to establish the relative importance of cross-linked curriculum content." Her committee was integrated by Drs. Luis Angel Contreras Niño (director) and Joaquin Caso Niebla, and Prof. José Luis Ramírez Cuevas, all IIDE academics. Cesar Leon Lorta presented and approved his degree examination defending the thesis "Determining educational uses with the support of smartphones in formal courses in the opinion of undergraduate students Unit UABC Valle Dorado". His dissertation committee was composed by Dr. Javier Organist Sandoval (director), Drs. Gilles Lavigne and Lewis McAnally Salas, IIDE researchers. Genoveva Gutierrez Ruiz earned his Master in Educational Sciences degree after presenting a research project entitled "Analysis of navigational records in a virtual learning environment." Her dissertation committee was composed by Dr. Gilles Lavigne (Director), Lewis McAnally Salas and Javier Organist Sandoval, researchers from the IIDE and Prof. Juan Pablo Torres Herrera, UABC academic.

Julian Rodriguez Lopez presented the thesis "Teaching Profile Diagnostics of Mathematics and Spanish professors at Higher Secondary Education in the city of Ensenada." His supervisor was Dr. Gilles Lavigne and his committee was composed by Drs. Lucia Coral Aguirre Muñoz, IIDE researcher, Gema Lopez Gorosave, academic of UABC and MCE Isabel Miramontes Bush, academic at the Colegio de Bachilleres de Baja California. 7


The IIDE advises the University of Yucatan in teacher evaluation. In mid-November the IIDE was visited by Dr. Carmen Barrera Rosado, head of the Assessment of Teaching Practice at the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan (UADY), who held a working meeting with Dr. Edna Luna Serrano to work on the improvement of the assessment model from that University. The UADY, the Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua and UABC have been working for some time on an interinstitutional project under the coordination of Dr. Edna Luna and other distinguished scholars, so in this stage Dr. Barrera was allowed to know in detail the characteristics associated with teacher evaluation system from UABC, the theoretical model on which it is based and the nature of self-report instrument in which it is based.

This stay will allow the UADY to make those adjustments and changes that are relevant in its assessment procedures to improve and systematize.

Editorial Board meeting of the REDIE. The Journal of Educational Research (REDIE) held its twentieth Editorial Board meeting on the headquarters of the Institute for Educational Research on December 7th. The meeting was attended by Dr. Gustavo Fischman, University of Arizona, Dr. Norma Iglesias, from San Diego State University, and Rosario Rogel, Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico, three of the six researchers that currently integrate the Editorial Board as well as with the presence of the Editorial Board of the journal, Dr. Edna Luna, B.A. Gabriela Vidauri, Mayer Cabrera, and Prof. Luz Elena Antillon, academics from the IIDE. Besides becoming the ideal place to make an assessment of the achievements made during the year, the council meeting allows feedback between the editorial team and board members, prominent scholars that operate in the field of scientific publications. 25 y 26 de junio | 25 y 26 de junio |

Researchers editorial board.

Decisions such as changing the periodicity in the publication, searching the internationalization of REDIE and the inclusion of it on indexes and databases that validate the quality of the magazine, were some of the topics covered in the agenda.


The IIDE represented by students in a college call. As part of the accreditation process by the Institutional Management Committees and Institutional Management and Outreach, Bonding and Extension of Culture CIEES, on November 15th students Maria Jose Paulina Viveros Riquelme and Juan Carlos Perez Moran represented the Postgraduate Programs from the IIDE in the workshops organized for this purpose. The meeting, attended by students from various undergraduate and postgraduate programs from UABC was held in Mexicali Campus, giving rise to comments and points of view on issues that affect the certification of the curricula and programs and university services. The discussion was mainly on the conditions regarding infrastructure of the institution, the mandatory knowing of English for undergraduate and graduate students, and teacher evaluation.

Researcher from the IIDE offers workshop for use of digital program. With a total of 32 participants, including students and faculty staff of the Institute, on November 16th was held the workshop "Using Zotero" program that helps managing and cite sources for the development of an academic project.

The workshop had the objective to present the features and benefits of the program to enhance its use and explore the benefits that this program offers. Dr. Lewis McAnally Salas, IIDE researcher was responsible for leading the workshop. Dr. McAnally is a graduate student from the Doctorate in International Education, Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas, Coordinator of Postgraduate Programs at the IIDE, member of the Academic Board "Digital Technology in Education" member of the National Researchers System level I.

The IIDE creates a historical memories book of Punta Banda community. Attended by about 100 people including students and teachers of different educational levels, as well as historians and members of the community, on November 5th the presentation of the book "INFONAVIT Punta Banda: History of a community standing", took place written by historians Manuel Guillen Guillen and Pedro Monroy Medina and coordinated by Dr. Coral Lucia Aguirre Muñoz, academic from the IIDE.

Lucía Coral Aguirre Muñoz has a PhD in Education from the Universidad Iberoamericana Noroeste, she is a teacher at a post graduate level at the IIDE and her research focuses on community development and social service.

Through this paper documents and historical memories of their community are provided to the residents of Punta Banda, in order to strengthen their identity and cohesion among its settlers and inhabitants. The event was held in the facilities of CONALEP Ensenada, where at the end of it copies among attendees were donated.
