Kerrytown - A historic market district located in the City of Ann Arobor Michigan. Known for its art scene and farmers market.

Community [Intersection of Physical Boundaries + Common Interests]

The ‘neighborhood’ allows for many different types of physical and emotional interactions. Sometimes they are pedestrian/pedestrian, car/pedestrian, pedestrian/cityscape, etc. I believe that through these differing interactions, community is formed. These unique overlapping moments allow us to interact with people with similar intentions/interests, thus building a larger commonly shared understanding and empathy of the surrounding physical environment.

In this analysis I hope to layout my understanding of what a neighborhood is and is not. To do so I will compare and contrast city life in Chicago versus rural life in Wisconsin.

So, what is “neighborhood?” Borders Determined More By Human Relationships Than Legal Declarations Our socio-economic statuses. education, interests and genetics determine much of who we interact with. Our neighborhoods WHQG WR EH UHÁHFWLRQV RI WKRVH FKDUDFWHULVWLFV DV ZHOO

Transporation Dependent on Density/Necessity Rural life doesn’t need public transport because of its vastness, while city life requires it. The social interaction that comes from “dealing” with public transport is lost in rural areas. There, interactions are usually with known people rather than strangers. City life tends to allow for meeting new people/neighbors. There are also just less people in the country!

Interests & Money = Amenities Depending on what you like to do and how much money you have, you are determining your neighborhood’s amenities.

The people you share the bus with, go to school with, buy produce from, see every morning commute, live near, see at church, etcectera; they are your neighbors and the social and physical constructs with them create the neighborhood.

Path: you need path to reach every building. that form the basic structure of a neighborhood.

Street Section (edge. boundary) : depend on the path, you can get different Street Sections. they have their own scale which depends on the population is large or small. at the same time, they get their own edge and boundry to other sections.

Green Space: green space is the irreplaceable element in a neighborhood. not just beacuse is kind of a rest place, but also a place in which people can get fresh air and be close to nature.

Water: can you imagine what if life is without water ? water is a basic part of our life, and it is even the fundamentals of our body. more over, according to the human’s natural preference of nature, water give people great experience.
