RE-IMAGINED The Neighborhood Studio 2014 of the Graduate Architecture Program at the Illinois Institute of Technology presents a study to be exhibited at CONNECT SOFA CHICAGO 2014. As a basis for analysis, the Neighborhood Studio 2014 has been researching the Packard Automotive Plant in Detroit, Michigan. The massive structure was once an icon of modern manufacturing and productivity. The innovative reinforced concrete structure, designed by Albert Kahn, housed state of the art automobile production facilities, including an assembly line more than half a mile long. However, time and the changing paradigms of industry ultimately brought the great machinery to a halt. It became a symbol of decay and urban ruin. Now, as the city of Detroit looks ahead, the Studio is challenged to re-imagine this derelict place. The site becomes a beacon for the future, inspiring the development of new typologies for manufacturing that are relevant to the modern world. 4

FABRICATED The design began by exploring the architect’s role in the making of a neighborhood. Can we design new prototypes for public spaces in the city? How will the city of the future be re-shaped by our intervention? With these in mind, the installation explores the process of manufacturing. In the development of the seating element, planes are transformed into a triangulated structural volume with operations appropriate to the material. The MDF sheets are precision machine cut for a dry-joint assembly. Expounding on construction, modules are aggregated into an expressive composition for customizable spaces.

7

HANDCRAFTED Working as a counterbalance for the heavy nature of the MDF, a lightweight paper element works as an overhead marquee that embraces the space reserved for the community. Beginning with planar materials and applying deliberate manipulations, a secondary structural typology was developed through folding, creating a structurally sound canopy. By employing materials that are a by-product of manufacturing, the installation acknowledges its roots in this process, and looks toward a more sustainable future.

DICHOTOMY As the divide between machine production and handcraft continues to be emphasized, the combined placement of seating elements and canopy invite an encounter between varied typologies of modular fabrication. In the dialogue of materiality, assembly, and production the composition of pieces is ready to receive meaning and value from people, place and time.

CONFIGURATIONS The installation is an invitation to converse, interact, and repose. It poses as a catalyst for human activity, creating within itself a diverse community. The elements are given meaning by their relationship to each other and, above all, the synergy of the people that gather within. The dynamic interaction creates the character of the space.

EXPERIENCE We invite the visitors to gather in this space in much the same way as the community of elements we are striving to portray. We invite you to consider the role of the machine in our contemporary society and of the human hand in the production process of today. But most of all, we invite you to contribute to the creation of something new.
