Cherry Blossoms are widely grown as a flowering ornamental tree. It is viewed as a part of the Japanese custom of "Hanani"
Unlike their relatives Prunus avium and Prunus cerasus, the fruits of this tree are not edible. Their flower petals however are added to cakes, sweets and jellies and used for brewing Sakura tea.
The dark wood of this tree is sometimes used to manufacture fine furniture. Cherry Blossoms are richly symbolic and therefore a part of Japanese art, anime, manga, film and music. It is associated with mortality and grace.
Most cherry species are native to the Northern Hemisphere.
Their flowering starts in April and ends by early May. Full sun exposure is necessary for this tree to bloom beautiful flowers and be strong. Cherry tree root systems grow closer to the surface and have a large number of sucker shoots that grow vertically from them. Because of their shallow root systems, cherry trees have the potential to cause significant damage to surface landscaping.
