The Complete Package Getting the total package can be harder than it seems. From electronic items to kids toys, there always seems to be something else that's needed for the item to function as intended. That new TV that you just bought needs a variety of cables and hookups to get that high definition picture you really want. A computer needs extra software and upgrades to do the task you bought it for. Then there are the kids toys that need an endless amount of batteries. It seems as if nothing is as good as it sounds; something else is always required to get the total package. Aren't you happy God doesn't work that way? You'll never be turned away by God to go searching for something that will make you more

W h e re Are You?

complete. Paul says in Colossians 2:10 - "And ye are complete in him...". For the believer, that's a comforting fact. A relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior is everything the sinner needs. To stand before God forgiven, receiving everything you need from Christ. His complete righteousness applied to your account; nothing left out, nothing extra required. He is a rock solid place for your faith to rest. The work of Christ does not need something else to be added to it. It truly is the complete package! by Eric Shadle, M. (Are You In T he S on? Par t 2)

In Genesis 3:8, we read that Adam and Eve heard God walking through the Garden in the cool of the day. This was something God did often.

and Eve had the unique privilege of communing with God while He was in the garden. Remember, God’s word was specific:

Before Eve, we read about how God and Adam spent time together. This was a physical act on the part of both parties involved. They spoke together and most likely walked together, putting one foot in front of the other.

“You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (2:16b-17, ESV).

Consider the times God spoke with Adam. God didn’t speak through a burning bush at this point. God and Adam were together, walking in the garden, speaking with each other. It was during one visit that Adam received God's commandment not eat of a certain tree. During another visit, God made Eve from Adam’s rib. Adam most likely passed the commandment on the Eve. Can you visualize it? Eve received God's word from Adam. Adam

In 3:1-5 the serpent planted seeds of doubt in Eve's mind about God's truth; “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden? […] You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Notice the deception was lengthier that God’s command. [continued on pg 5]

Flag Etiquette

T I P S

During the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, countries were asked to dip their flag to King Edward VII. The American flag bearer refused. The team captain, Martin Sheridan, is quoted as saying “this flag dips to no earthly king.” There's a right way and a wrong way to display our flag. There’s more to proper flag respect than just not letting it touch the ground. Here are 4 useful tips from the United States Flag Code for rendering proper respect to Old Glory. 1. When the flag is displayed against a wall, either vertically or horizontally, its union (stars) should be at the top, to the flag's own right, and to the observer's left. 2. The flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, although the Flag Code permits night time display “when a patriotic effect is desired.” The flag should be illuminated if displayed at night. 3. The flag should be displayed only when the weather is fair, except when an all-weather flag is displayed. 4. The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman, and members of patriotic organizations. by G.W. [continued from pg 3] This truth-counterfeit was acted upon as if it was better than God’s truth. Eve then told this to Adam. And here we find that they disobeyed God's word, together. They replaced God's word with the serpent’s word. They replaced God's truth with the serpent's lie. Then Adam and Eve hid and God walked in. He walked through the garden and asked, "Where are you?" Adam then basically said, here we are. But something was out of place. No, not something, someone. In the text, we see God, walking in the garden, just as He’d done before. Where was Adam? You may say hiding and that’s the right answer. What really mattered is where Adam wasn’t. Adam wasn’t walking with God through the garden. Notice the depth of God’s questions. Yes, God asked Adam about his current location. God also asked him “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat” (3:1-13)? These questions were an opportunity for Adam to consider his current location, to confess, and to realize where he should have been; walking with God. One day, I peeked around the corner and caught our daughter drawing on the wall. I asked her, “Eliza, what are you doing?” That’s when it hit me. I already knew she drew on the wall. I was giving her an opportunity to tell me what she had done. She decided not to tell me. I then said, “I saw what you did. I’m not asking because I don’t know. I’m asking you what you did to give you an opportunity to be honest with me and tell me what you did. Are you supposed to draw on the wall?”

Satan is a liar, accuser, and murder. He lied to Eve by sugarcoating a lie with a little truth, just like he did when he tempted Jesus (Matt 4:6). Satan tempts us to do something and tries to persuade us by saying, "This sin isn’t that bad. Just give in. You'll love it." At the moment we give in to the temptation, he turns to God and accuses us saying, "Look at what your child just did." Keep in mind, God created us in His image. Satan's goal was to kill His creation. By breaking God's commandment, Adam and Eve would surely die. They did not become like God, as Satan said. Instead, they became like Satan the accuser. Instead of taking responsibility, Adam accused Eve and Eve accused the serpent. Notice that the serpent didn't try to blame anyone. Adam was not walking with God or enjoying His presence. We take for granted we have the ability to rise from a chair and walk wherever we like. Most of the time we walk without thought and our toes suffer the consequences. Walking with God is not just putting one foot in front of the other. Walking with God on this side of eternity takes thought, it takes focused intensity. As Adam Stoddard said, "The sheep that walks closely to the Shepherd is less likely to be picked off by the wolves." by G.W. Fuller

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep." John 21: 15-17 (KJV)

N o t W h a t We A r e , B u t W h a t We C a n B e

The setting of this scripture passage is during the time after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus appears to the disciples before his ascension to the Father in heaven. During this time we see much confusion and despair among the disciples. This is especially so regarding Simon Peter. In the gospels, we see Peter as a man who was always making mistakes. Oftentimes, he spoke and acted before he thought, resulting in failure, and admonishment from Jesus. The last and most highly noted example of this is when Peter swore he would stand with Jesus to the death, but then denied knowing Him three times after Jesus was arrested (John 18: 2527). Peter’s speech was mighty, but he changed his mind and became a coward when the prospect of death became a reality. Peter’s life was in a state of despair. He surely felt shame, embarrassment, and uncertainty as to his relationship with the risen Christ. In this passage, we see Peter being honest and real for possibly the first time. Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him. Peter replies with a “yes.” But what is interesting is that in the Greek text, Jesus and Peter use two different words for love. Jesus 6

uses the Greek word agapaw. It means unconditional love and is the word used in the Bible for God’s love for us. Peter uses the Greek word filew. This word refers to brotherly love, and refers to a strong affection for the object of the love. The two words are very different. Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him unconditionally. Peter replies that he has a strong affection for Jesus. Here we see a very honest Simon Peter. Peter is giving Jesus all that he has, but right now the filew love, the strong affection, is the best he has to offer. How did Jesus respond? He responded with, “Feed my sheep.” Jesus was willing to take what Peter had to offer, even though at this point it was not the agaph love that Jesus desired. Jesus was willing to accept Peter as he was, because Jesus saw Peter not only for what he was at present, but for what he knew Peter could be, given the power of the Holy Spirit in his life. We do not have to be perfect and spotless to be accepted by and useful to Jesus. If we honestly and sincerely give Him our best, He will take us and the possibilities are endless as to what we may become. Simon Peter, in his failure and despair, gave the little that he had, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, look at what he did become.

Blindness of Identity

by Dr. Paul Tripp I’m persuaded that many Christians don’t have a Gospel perspective on who they are. This lack of Gospel identity shows up in two ways. First, many Christians underestimate the presence and power of indwelling sin. We don’t see how easily entrapped we are in this world full of snares (see Galatians 6:1). We don’t grasp the comprehensive nature of the war that’s always raging within our heart (see Romans 7:15-25). We’re not aware of how prone we are to run after God replacements (see Romans 1:25).. And we fail to see that our greatest problems exists inside of us, not outside of us (see 2 Corinthians 5:15). My work with teenagers has convinced me that one of the main reasons teenagers aren’t excited by the Gospel is because they don’t think they need it. Many parents have successfully raised self-righteous little Pharisees. When they look at themselves, they don’t see a sinner in desperate need, so they’re not grateful for a Savior. Sadly, the same is true of many of us. We also fail to see the other side of our Gospel identity: a new identity in Christ. Christ not only gives me forgiveness and a new future, but a whole new identity as well! I’m now a child of God, with all of the rights and privileges that this title bestows. This is important because we all live out of some sense of identity, and our Gospel identity amnesia will always lead to some form of identity replacement. That is, if who I am in Christ doesn’t shape the way I think 8

about myself and the things I face, then I’ll live out of some other identity. One replacement identity that we take on is difficult life circumstances. While divorce, depression, and single parenthood are significant human experiences, they’re not identities. In the same way, our work isn’t our identity, even though it’s an important part of how God intends us to live. For too many of us, our sense of identity is more rooted in our performance than it is in God’s grace. It’s wonderful to be successful at what God has called you to do, but when you use your success to define who you are, you’ll always have a distorted perspective. There are many other types of replacement identities. If you want to read about them, here's a list of four common ones. Living as an “effective and fruitful” Christian begins with a healthy identity rooted in Christ. If you understand who you are as a child of God, you’ll make decisions that produce good fruit. An identity rooted in any other replacement will lead to some kind of ineffectiveness and unfruitfulness. This resource is from Paul Tripp Ministries. For additional resources, visit PaulTripp.com. The name Bethesda is derived from two Hebrew words: Beth (which means “house”) and Chesed (which means “mercy” or “lovingkindness”). Our mission at Bethesda Medical Care is to become a house of mercy for the sick, as well as a place of healing for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit (I Thessalonians 5:23-24).
