In normal life your celebrations don't usually intersect with your sad times and your sad times aren't typically your times of celebration. When you’re sad, you don't really feel like celebrating anything much. The opposite is also true; when you’re celebrating, you don't want your good spirits dampened by reasons to be sad. We try our best to keep our sadness and our celebration separate. It just makes life less complicated. But Jesus has called us to be a sadly celebratory community, or a celebratory sad community. Why is this true? Because Jesus calls you to a life of uncompromising honesty and a life of unchallenged hope. If you’re going to be honest-really honest--then you’re going to be sad. Why? Because you can’t be honest without recognizing the horrible legacy of damage that sin has left on each one of us and on the surrounding world. Sin damages us, it damages our relationships, and it damages our environment. There’s nothing you’ll ever examine or experience, this side of eternity, that hasn’t been damaged in some way by sin. The destruction is so widespread it almost leaves you breathless. When you’re really honest about how broken the world actually is, you can’t help but be profoundly sad. Yet we’re not just called to be people of honesty, we’re called to be people of hope as well. When you begin to consider how magnificent God's love really is, when you begin to understand how powerful his grace is, and when you begin to realize that

God is right now exercising both his love and his grace so that this world would be fully and completely restored, you can't help but celebrate. This God who’s the ultimate definition of love and wisdom won’t leave us and the surrounding world alone until we and it are fully and completely restored to what we were meant to be in the beginning. So we should be the saddest and most celebrant community on earth. And we should be sad and celebratory at the very same time. We’re sad because we know how bad things actually are and we celebrate because we know that the help that Jesus offers us reaches to the deepest level of our need. Are you sad at the condition of your world and does your sadness dance with your celebration because you also know how great God's life-transforming grace actually is? When you take those honest looks at your world, have you remembered that God won’t quit or rest until he's made all things new? May both celebration and sadness dance in your heart to the rhythm of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and may you weep with joy and celebrate with sadness until He makes all things new once again! Reflection Questions • Where is sin currently leaving a legacy of damage on our culture? • Have you become numb towards that damage? • How has the brokenness of the world affected your daily life? • In the midst of that brokenness, are you tempted to lose hope? • How can you maintain hope in the midst of that damage? by Dr. Paul Tripp This resource is from Paul Tripp Ministries. Get Back Up...

We all fall down. What we do next is crucial. Our children sometimes run around like wild animals. Before our sons were born, I began to teach our daughter a little phrase for when she would fall down or crash her little tricycle. "Eliza, what do we do when we fall down?" Eliza would answer, "We get back up." Maybe I copied it from Batman Begins. Who knows. I soon realized that just getting up was not the answer. I mean, if you get knocked down, it's not beneficial to get back up just to get knocked right back down. So, with that in mind, I changed the phase a bit. When one of our children falls down (it's not like they're clumsy all the time), I ask, "What happens when we fall down?" They'll now answer, "We get back up and do it better." This phrase even works when their tower made of blocks collapses. I recently bought a book because the title grabbed my attention. Has that ever happened to you before. I'm also a reader of other books by Wayne Mack. His book, Down, But Not Out: How to Get Up When Life Knocks You Down is a great and ironically hard hitting resource for all Christians.

The first few chapters threw me off when he began to address the sin of worry. Yes, sin. He very specifically detailed worry as useless and unnecessary, unbecoming, and involves unbelief. Mack wrote that worry is a common but serious problem with serious consequences. He encourages us to understand worry from God's perspective. Mack outlined how we can overcome the sin of worry. He even includes application sections at the end of the chapters. I recommend you buy, read, and apply this book. It will seem at times that you are being sliced open and exposed. However, in his explanation and application of God's word, that's exactly what we often need. If you desire change, even in the area of worry, I believe God will use this book in your life. by G.W. Believers In Business Twice a month, Believers In Business meets for fellowship, encouragement, networking, and lunch. Believers In Business provides a chance for Christians to come together for the purpose of sharpening each other in the faith during the work day. Believers In Business provides opportunity to network. It's important to share information about your business. It's also important to get to know others and about their profession. Someone in our meeting may be looking for your specific product or service. Believers In Business meets for lunch. God doesn't call us to an alter any longer. He calls us to a table. Think of what Heaven will be like. We will dine with the God of the universe. Having a meal together is a great way to get to know each other and get involved in each other's lives. During each meeting, we introduce ourselves to the group and share about our business. We then hear from a local Christian in business about what God has been doing within their business. Next, we hear a devotional from another Christian in business. Lastly, we enjoy the rest of our time together with food and fellowship. There are no dues or membership fees. We meet at Ocean Zen at 11:30am - 1pm. Check the calendar on page 11 for specific dates. We are called to be witnesses. We must start where we are, every day...at work. 6

5 Halloween Safety Tips

T I P S

Trick or treating is fun for kids, but the stats on kids' safety on October 31 are downright scary. Here are tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics for Halloween safety. It's no wonder kids go bonkers—and accidents happen—on October 31. You know to keep 'em away from jack-o'-lanterns and any other lit candles (right? just checking), but you've also got to be smart on the street. “Because of the high volume of kids out on Halloween, more are hit by cars than at other times of the year,” says Kyran Quinlan, M.D., chair-elect of the AAP's council on injury, violence, and poison prevention. Another less obvious modern-day nemesis: button batteries. They're in musical greeting cards, invitations, and blinking costume parts. If swallowed, they can get stuck in the throat and burn the tissue. Here's how to suit up and troll for treats safely: 1. Sheathe the Saber: The safest accessories are short and soft. Try to talk him into leaving unwieldy swords and pitchforks at home. 2. Tailor-made: Hem the costume if it's dragging to prevent tripping (use packing tape or iron-on Stitch Witchery). 3. Walk This Way: Clown shoes and plastic heels are never easy to walk in— especially in the dark. Go for sneakers or flats. 4. Watch Out: A mask should have eyeholes wide enough for your kid to see well (cut bigger openings if necessary). Better yet, opt for face paint instead. 5. Be Bright: Add reflective tape on the back, arms, and legs of dark costumes so By American Academy of Pediatrics he's more visible to drivers. www.parenting.com/article/halloween-safety-tips?page=0,0

dreams! My family of three is thriving and happy! The life I live now is not what I expected it to be, but I am wholeheartedly embracing this season I’m in!

Serving While Single Three years ago, my life as I knew it changed...completely turned upside down. I became a full-time, single mom to my beautiful daughters after 12 years of marriage.

Psalm 62:6-7 says “Truly he is my rock janelle@singlemomzrock.com and my salvation; he is my fortress, I willwww.singlemomzrock.com not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty 417.483.3479 rock, my refuge.” When a friend sent me a card in the mail shortly after the divorce, she put this scripture in it to remind me of who I needed to lean on during this hard time. I had no idea that verse would be the foundation for the ministry that I would start for single moms in our area two years later. My life has changed. The dreams I dreamt are no longer. My family was torn apart. But what I have learned over these last few years is that I have new

When we go through rough times, we always want to be on the other side of that valley. What we need to realize is if it wasn’t for that valley, we wouldn’t get to be the person that God needs us to be. My valley made me realize how strong God always knew I was, it grew me, has given me self-confidence like no other and has stretched me to find my true passion in life. I started SingleMomzRock to help single parents in our area realize their story is not over...just like mine isn’t. What’s funny is I didn’t realize by wanting to help other single parents out, that in turn, it would heal me. But it has. God is still in the business of Redeeming...just ask me!

Bethesda Medical Care is a board certified family medicine practice, providing personalized healthcare for patients of all ages. For less than a dollar a day, those who enroll in our practice are able to see Dr. Graham as often as necessary, for an unhurried hour long consultation, as well as to have direct email or phone access for more urgent questions. We have acquired specialized training in tropical medicine and international health so that we can advise long-term expatriates living overseas, as well as short term overseas travelers, who may need immunization counseling. Our office is a state licensed facility for yellow fever vaccination and we stock a variety of other tropical vaccines. In addition, Dr. Graham is a FAA-designated Senior Aviation Medical Examiner. Bethesda Medical Care takes its name from the story of Jesus healing the sick man at the pool of Bethesda near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem (John 5:1-17). The name Bethesda is derived from two Hebrew words: Beth (which means “house”) and Chesed (which means “mercy” or “lovingkindness”). Our mission at Bethesda Medical Care is to become a house of mercy for the sick, as well as a place of healing for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit (I Thessalonians 5:23-24).
