W o r k i n g O u t O u r S a l v a t i o n "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." Philippians 2:12-13 (ESV) In our society, the term “working out” often produces a mental image of an individual walking, jogging, or lifting weights to achieve or maintain some level of physical fitness. A decision to be physically fit was made. This decision started a process in which the individual engages in exercise and physical fitness behaviors consistent with the decision and that results in the desired outcome: being physically fit. Similarly, when our children sometimes quarrel among themselves, my wife will tell them to “work out” their differences. This command leads to a process of negotiation and compromise behaviors consistent with the task and that result in the desired state: the resolution of the conflict. The term “work out” implies two things. First, it implies a process, something that takes place over time. Second, it implies action on the part of the individual. In verse 12, Paul tells us to work out our salvation. This implies a process in which the believer is to be an active participant. Similar to the examples above, when an individual gives his/ her life to Jesus Christ, that decision is the starting point of a process in which the individual engages in behaviors consistent with the decision and results in the desired outcome: a Christ-like life, spiritual fitness. We all know too well that physical fitness does not result only from the decision to be physically fit. It requires much work to make physical fitness a reality. Salvation also does

not result only from a one time decision to be saved, but requires the “working out” or behaviors consistent with that decision that makes the Christ-like life in us a reality. The “working out” of our salvation is evidence of the validity of our decision to let Christ be the Lord of our lives. May we examine ourselves today to make certain that this salvation is being “worked out” in our individual lives. by Dr. Wesley A. Scroggins

ProcrastinationConfidence Killer!

Take your family to a local apple orchard. Just imagine the possibilities of what you can make with buckets of apples.

Procrastination can take root in our lives and kill our confidence. Procrastination happens most often when we fear or dislike doing something. It causes us to hide our talents or not take part in a great relationship or opportunity.

Cream Cheese Apple Muffins 1 package (3 oz) cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup sugar 2 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp vanilla extract Add in mixing bowl, beat until smooth.

Procrastination shows up in many forms like creative avoidance, excuses, and other lies we tell ourselves that keep us from winning. Beating the ugly habit of procrastinating can be done. Check out these 7 Steps to neutralize procrastination.

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt Combine, and then stir in cream cheese mixture until moistened.

1. When you begin to procrastinate, stop, think, and breathe! 2. Say out loud, "I don't want to do this (whatever you are avoiding)
because...

1 cup diced peeled tart apples 1/2 cup bran flakes Fold in the muffin mixture

3. What am I telling myself to continue procrastinating?

Topping: 1 1/2 tsp sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon

4. What evidence do I have proving any of the above to be true?

Fill greased muffin cups 2/3 full. Combine topping ingredients; sprinkle over batter. Bake 375°F for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack. Yields 1 dozen.

6. What am I risking by taking a step forward toward success?

5. What am I risking by staying frozen in procrastination?

7. What am I willing to do right now? Step 7 is critical. Sometimes we can change how we feel and think about something by doing it when we don’t feel like it. It is all in our willingness to win. It's hard to admit your need for help. It's hard to admit that there are things you don’t know and don’t understand. It's hard to admit that there are things that you can’t do. It's hard to reach out and cry out for help. It's hard to confess to weakness and ignorance. It's hard to have to depend on another for what you think you should be able to supply for yourself. It's hard to talk about what you don’t know and what you can’t do. It's hard to admit to poor judgment and wrong responses. It's hard to receive correction and to confess to sin. Why are these things so hard? Because we all like to buy into two very seductive lies. These lies argue against any need to be dependent and they bolster the independence that tends to attract us all. The first lie is the lie of AUTONOMY. Autonomy tells me that I'm an independent being with the right to do what I want to do, when, where, and how I want to do it. Now you may say, "Paul, I know well enough not to believe that!" Yet every time you defend yourself against the correction of another or tell someone not to tell you what to do, you buy into this lie. The second lie is the lie of SELF-SUFFICIENCY. This lie tells me I have everything within myself to be what I’m supposed to be and to do what I’m supposed to do. Perhaps you're thinking, "Okay, I do occasionally buy into my autonomy, but I definitely don't think I'm selfsufficient!" Yet each time you resist reaching out for help or each time you act as if you're okay when, in fact, you're not, you’ve bought into this lie. 8

Why are these two lies so wrong and so dangerous? Because the Bible clearly tells us that we’re people who have been made for COMMUNITY. We were designed to live in worshipful community with God and humble community with people. We were never constructed to live all by ourselves. Even Adam and Eve needed God and one another. Think about this. They were perfect people, living in a perfect world, yet they were still needy because they were not created to live life on their own. Remember, there are few people more influential in your life than you are because no one talks to you more than you do. You spend each day in constant conversation with you! And the things that you tell yourself shape what you do and say each day. Do you constantly remind yourself of your need for God and others? Do you tell yourself that it’s good to admit weakness and to reach out for help? If you do, it’s not a sign that something’s wrong. No, by God's definition, that kind of self-talk is a sign that something‘s very right. How about beginning to pray these three prayers every morning? "Lord, I‘m a person in desperate need of help today." "Lord, won't you, in your grace, send your helpers my way?" "Lord, please give me the humility to receive the help when it comes." Are you intimidated by your weaknesses? Are you afraid to bare your needs to God and others? Don't forget that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He came so that we’d be able to experience both peace with God and with others. He came so that we’d no longer have to seduce ourselves with the delusions of autonomy and self-sufficiency. He came so that we could be the kind of people we were created to be, living in humble worship of Him and humble dependency on others, right here, right now.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: 1. Reflect on the other people in your life. How do the decisions you make affect those around you? 2. Share some evidence of your neediness. What were some things that you couldn't do this past week? 3. When was the last time you initiated confession for a mistake you made? 4. Why shouldn't you be intimidated by weakness? by Dr. Paul Tripp This resource is from Paul Tripp Ministries. For additional resources, visit PaulTripp.com. Used with permission.

And In This Corner, Enoch's BBQ! I was born in Kansas City. As you know, there's some great BBQ in Kansas City. I grew up sampling all kinds of BBQ. My neighbor even had a smoker that took up his garage. He would smoke meat all weekend. The whole neighborhood smelled like a BBQ competition. Some "BBQ" restaurants are overhyped and prepackaged. There are few BBQ places worth going back for seconds. There are even fewer in the Springfield area that I'll frequent. One BBQ place that I've frequented is Enoch's BBQ & Southern Classics, located in Chesterfield Village. When my family walked in the door, we met the owner himself. Enoch told us about his family business and gave us some dinner suggestions. We decided to order the BBQ Nachos. The BBQ Nachos are tortilla chips, smothered in BBQ beans, cheese, sour cream, red onions, green onions, and BBQ sauce, with a choice of meat. We ordered 2; one with chicken and one with their slow-smoked brisket. There's good news and bad news. The bad news;

Enoch said they R e v i e w just ran out of the BBQ beans. Bummer. Or was it? The good news; in place of the BBQ beans, Enoch suggested covering the nachos with their Homemade Brunswick Stew. Keep in mind, this was our first time visiting this restaurant. We didn't know what the nachos tasted like with the BBQ beans. We picked a table for our party of 5, divvied up the plates and forks, and filled our cups just in time for our food to reach our table. It smelled great but we didn't waste much time just smelling the food. We dug in! The BBQ Nachos were fantastic...really fantastic! We didn't taste store bought BBQ sauce Enoch's BBQ sauce is unique to Enoch's alone. This KC kid was impressed. We went through the nachos like we were chipper shredders. Good thing we got 2 orders. We even went back the very next week just to try their BBQ Nachos with the BBQ beans. You'll have to decide which is better. You need to drop by Enoch's. They are Springfield's exclusive BBQ restaurant. They even cater. Take it from the Fuller family; Enoch's BBQ wins the bout in the BBQ fight! View their menu at EnochsBBQ.com or just drop in and tell them George Fuller sent you.

Happy Birthday Dad!

Bethesda Medical Care is a board certified family medicine practice, providing personalized healthcare for patients of all ages. For less than a dollar a day, those who enroll in our practice are able to see Dr. Graham as often as necessary, for an unhurried hour long consultation, as well as to have direct email or phone access for more urgent questions. We have acquired specialized training in tropical medicine and international health so that we can advise long-term expatriates living overseas, as well as short term overseas travelers, who may need immunization counseling. Our office is a state licensed facility for yellow fever vaccination and we stock a variety of other tropical vaccines. In addition, Dr. Graham is a FAA-designated Senior Aviation Medical Examiner. Bethesda Medical Care takes its name from the story of Jesus healing the sick man at the pool of Bethesda near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem (John 5:1-17). The name Bethesda is derived from two Hebrew words: Beth (which means “house”) and Chesed (which means “mercy” or “lovingkindness”). Our mission at Bethesda Medical Care is to become a house of mercy for the sick, as well as a place of healing for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit (I Thessalonians 5:23-24).
