Never Stop Being A Student

Do you think that you’ve arrived? Do you tend to think that you’ve learned what you need to learn and now know what you need to know? Or do you want to understand more deeply and more fully? Do you have a humble, open, and seeking heart? There was once a time in the early years of our faith when we couldn’t get enough. We had a voracious hunger for truth. We lived with the humbling realization that there was so much we didn’t know. We loved to study the Word of God. We loved listening to peers and mentors who were further along. We were students. But something happened along the way. Perhaps we got distracted by the world and began to live more like tourists than students. Perhaps we got discouraged and felt our study wasn’t helping. Or perhaps our hunger was blunted by a feeling of arrival. Whatever your story, I say to you - never stop being a student. There are two reasons. First – the depth of God’s wisdom. It has no boundary. It has no bottom. It has no ceiling. If for ten million years you sat for 24 hours a day at His feet to listen, you would scratch only the surface of His wisdom. Here’s the second reason – the danger of the world. Falsehood echoes more loudly and repeatedly than the sounds of wisdom. Every day a thousand voices speak into your life, and the majority of those voices have not gotten the flowers of their insight from the wisdom garden of the Lord. You see, we live in the middle of a raging wisdom war. It’s so easy

to be taken captive. It’s so easy to have divine wisdom corrupted by human wisdom. It’s so easy to breathe in the polluted air of a culture that no longer actually thinks that God is, let alone that He is wise. I’ll say it again, never stop being a student. Morning after morning, bow your head and humbly pray – “Lord, please teach me your way.” Reflection Questions: • In what ways have you stopped living as a student? • To become more of a student, what changes would you need to make in your approach to daily life? • What, in your knowledge of God’s truth, do you need to investigate further and understand more fully? • How can you encourage others to live like students? by Dr. Paul Tripp This resource is from Paul Tripp Ministries. Complaining vs. Thanksgiving How would you fill in the blank? “I’m thankful for

Scan to hear the sermon

.”

Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks... (Ps. 75:1) Do all things without complaining and disputing... (Phil. 2:14) On any given day of the week, I often complain more than I express thankfulness. The Bible specifically says complaining is a sinful heart attitude. Complaining can be seen in how we react to a situation that doesn’t go our way. Complaining itself is specifically against God. It’s where we don’t want what He wants for us. We attempt to be in His position by falsely believing that we can do a better job. Thankfully, through Jesus, we can put off complaining and put on a more godly behavior; thankfulness. We often complain about the littlest things. Alternatively, we should be thankful, to God, for the littlest things. Thanksgiving, or “giving thanks” should be specifically expressed to God. It too is a heart attitude. We often say, “I’m thankful for .” However, we should more accurately ascribe thankfulness in this way; “I’m thankful, to God, for .” Are you thankful? by G.W. Fuller ozarkschristianvoice.com

Advent: The Need

In an act of sovereign grace, God places his favor on Noah and his family. After the flood, God promises to bless his descendants. If you know your genealogies, one of those descendants is Abraham. And God says to Abraham, “In your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 22:18).

Human beings were created to love God. Our love for God was supposed to shape every thought, motive, choice, decision, word and action. But in Genesis 6 it’s very clear that our love for God has been replaced with love of self. All the evil in the world happens because we no longer love God as we should, and in his place, we position ourselves on the throne.

That blessing was Christ, wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger (Luke 2:7). This Advent season, celebrate Genesis 6:8 and God’s merciful plan of redemption through the baby in the manger. But take seriously the cause of evil in Genesis 6:5. You are still very capable of loving yourself.

Genesis 6:6 may be the saddest passage in all of Scripture. Could you get more graphic, more specific, more all-inclusive words? "And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart."

As you continue with the story, what does God do? Genesis 6:7 – “So the Lord said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land… for I am sorry that I have made them.’” It sounds like a horrible way to end the story. But praise God! Genesis chapter 6 has an eighth verse: “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.”

Do the same things that grieve the heart of the Lord bring your heart sadness? In what ways this week did you allow love of self to replace love of God?

Ikthoos Magazine Timeline Ikthoos Magazine (IM) started with an idea. About 2 years ago, I met with a friend to discuss how to get more members on my website, Ikthoos.org, an online Christian owned business directory. During our conversation, he said something that helped me generate ideas – something to the effect of – How many people know about Ikthoos.org? It’s not like you have a billboard.

pay for a billboard when printing a magazine was about the same price and it could make money to pay for itself? Local businesses will see the magazine and want to place ads in it, right? IM will grab the attention of Christians in business and the general public and then direct them to Ikthoos.org. IM is different, both in content and design. I researched what software to use and settled on Adobe InDesign. I learned InDesign through YouTube videos, tips from others, and good ol’ trial & error. I thoroughly enjoy graphic design and writing; two things I never imagined I would enjoy doing. Never stop being a student. Our first issue was distributed in Oct 2012!

"'There is an end to everything, to good things as well.'"

From there I did some research. How much would a billboard cost? Well, they’re not cheap. I noticed a lot of small-sized local directories around town. I thought, what if I did a magazine to feature local Christian businesses?

So I did more research. I grabbed a few directories and measured them with a ruler. I folded lots of paper in half. I drew lots of boxes and created a format. I did the math and figured on bringing in X amount of money per month to funnel back into Ikthoos.org. After all, why

As you can see, IM is content driven. In the beginning, I wanted to offer encouraging and biblical content from local pastors. After reaching out for more content, IM soon

included devotionals from internationally known authors, speakers, bloggers, Christian business owners, life coaches, non-profits, missionaries, just to name a few. My wife, Ona even wrote a little. Recipes, tips, reviews, and even a calendar were added to keep IM in the hands of the reader, longer. I soon realized that Ikthoos Magazine needed its own website. More research and development ensued and IkthoosMagazine. com launched in Nov 2012. This was the first website I ever built. Soon after, I met a man that distributed a local Christian directory. He really liked the layout of IM and that it was content driven instead of just a small phone book. Since this Christian directory was no longer distributed in our area, he gave me his stands to display IM. Thank you, sir. We started with only 40 locations, mostly churches. I wanted IM to be everywhere. We started with 1000 printed copies, then 1500, then 2500. One month we printed 4000 copies! Currently, IM is distributed to over

200 churches and businesses. Each issue is emailed to over 300 subscribers, digitally shared all over social media sites, and handed out at local events, and business networking meetings. You may have seen me in my black top hat, handing out IM. You may have received

a copy from my wife or one of our cute and helpful kiddos. In late Dec 2012, I sat down with Justin Skinner of Prixel Creative. He designed a great, more open layout as a template for our Jan 2013 issue. From there, I fine-tuned the layout and expanded it into the issue you now hold. IM went from “Connected the Christian Community” to “Encouraging Our Local Community.” So what does the future hold for IM? I agree with Geoffrey Chaucer that, "There is an end to everything, to good things as well." Sadly, but optimistically, this issue marks the ending point of our magazine timeline. Why? There are two main reasons: 1. Since IM’s inception, my wife and I personally funded most of its printing and distribution. 2. IM takes an exorbitant amount of time to produce and distribute; way more than I can bear. It’s far better to sacrifice IM for my family then to sacrifice my family for IM. Thanksgiving is upon us. It’s only fitting to express my gratitude. Thank you to all those that supported IM. Thank you to those who said, “Hey, let me pass some out.” Thank you to all the churches and businesses willing to display IM. Thank you, Rob Walker for your help with InDesign and layout. Thank you Irwin Printing. Thank you, Sheila Boutwell formerly of Senior Scoops. Thank you, Allen Vaughan of Tag Magazine. Thank you, Carrie Hough for your ideas. Thank you, Chance Potts for your counsel. Thank you, John Sacoulas of Ozarks Christian Voice, for multiplying our distribution and for doing all you do. Keep on keepin’ on. Thank you, Pastor Jeffrey Chavez of Catalyst Church for believing in IM, in me, and for giving startup dough. Thank you, Pastor Josh Mathews of Meadowview Baptist Church for letting me use the church building as a popup office. Thank you to those that bought ads when IM first started. Thank you to those that helped me distribute IM all over the area and at local events. So many people helped make IM possible. Thank you all. I especially want to say thank you to my wife for supporting my crazy ideas and for her willingness to package hundreds of copies

and get them mailed out. Thank you for telling me to, “Keep going.” You’re a great co-editor and distribution-driver. Above all, I want to thank God. Your grace is sufficient. You are the Provider. Thank You for allowing me to offer biblical devotionals to this local community, my “Jerusalem.” My prayer is that many were encouraged and sharpened and that You were glorified through IM. I pray for our local community, that many will come to know You by Christians boldly sharing the Gospel to those around them. Reader, I leave you with this – I pray you were encouraged by IM. Thank you for picking up this very copy. Thank you for doing business with those within these pages. The time may come when IM can be reborn and once again encourage our local community. Until then, thank you for supporting IM! It’s been an honor to serve local Christian businesses and the greater Springfield area. Happy Thanksgiving & Merry Christmas! Fare thee well, George W. Fuller

I had no idea that verse would be the foundation for the ministry that I would start for single moms in our area two years later. My life has changed. The dreams I dreamt are no longer. When we go through rough times, we always want to be on the other side of that valley. What we need to realize is if it wasn’t for that valley, we wouldn’t get to be the person that God needs us to be. My valley made me realize how strong God always knew I was, it grew me, has given me self-confidence like no other and has stretched me to find my true passion in life. I started SingleMomzRock to help single parents in our area realize their story is not over...just like mine isn’t. What’s funny is I didn’t realize by wanting to help other single parents out, that in turn, it would heal me. But it has. God is still in the business of Redeeming...just ask me!

Bethesda Medical Care takes its name from the story of Jesus healing the sick man at the pool of Bethesda near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem (John 5:1-17). The name Bethesda is derived from two Hebrew words: Beth (which means “house”) and Chesed (which means “mercy” or “lovingkindness”). Our mission at Bethesda Medical Care is to become a house of mercy for the sick, as well as a place of healing for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit (I Thessalonians 5:23-24).
