The Heart of the Season.
~ LOVE Letter from Ilona Lee
As the golden hues of fall sweep across our landscapes and the air becomes crisp with the promise of change, we are reminded of the beauty in slowing down and embracing the rhythms of nature. Autumn has always been a time of reflection—a season where we find ourselves drawn inward, reevaluating what matters most and savoring the comforts of home. In many ways, fall is nature’s love letter to us, an invitation to pause, breathe deeply, and bask in the warmth of the present moment.
At Ile Maison, the fall season symbolizes renewal. It’s a time for nurturing ourselves and the spaces we call home, while also looking forward to new possibilities. There is something profoundly grounding about autumn—how the earth seems to whisper that, just like the leaves falling from the trees, it’s okay to let go of what no longer serves us. It’s in this space of release and renewal that we can begin to cultivate more intention, more joy, and more connection in our everyday lives.
For me, fall is also about gratitude. I am deeply grateful for each of you, the readers of Ile Maison, who inspire me with your passion for wellbeing, art, nature and innovation. Your commitment to living consciously, with heart and purpose, fuels everything we do here. This issue is dedicated to you—to celebrating the small moments of magic in our daily lives, and to the bigger vision of creating spaces that nurture us and the world around us.
As we journey through the autumn months, let’s open our hearts to the possibilities that come with change, and take time to honor the sacredness of home. After all, in the art of living well, our homes are not just places to live—they are expressions of love, places to dream, and the foundations of a life lived with intention.
with Love,
The Global Wellness Summit (GWS) is the foremost gathering of international leaders in the multitrillion-dollar global wellness economy. MAYU WATER
The Beauty of Healthier Hydration
Breathing, Balanced Water
The MAYU Swirl harnesses the gentle, elemental power of the spiral motion found throughout the universe to deliver reoxygenated, reanimated, rebalanced, re-sculpted and rejuvenated water that tastes and hydrates the way nature intended.
Oxygen in.
Volatiles out
Water was meant to move but when it’s stuck in pipes, it loses the abundant atmospheric energy your body needs for complete hydration. Just like how wine needs to breathe to express its best flavor, the MAYU Swirl’s whirlpool motion recaptures lost vitality by inviting oxygen in to balance, alkalize and manifest your water’s true taste and texture — just 6,000 times faster.
A Window to Wellness
There are few things that so completely and beautifully convey both visual and spiritual harmony as nature’s perfect spiral form. Captured in suspended animation within the elegant symmetry of the MAYU Swirl’s porcelain and glass vessel, our spiral whirlpool is at once both a sculptural statement of wellness in motion and a vehicle to mesmerizing, captivating calm— whether you’re looking at or drinking from it.
COUCOO CABANES
GRANDS LACS
CHASSEY - LÈS
MONTBOZON, FRANCHE-COMTÉ FRANCE
IN SYMBIOSIS
WITH THE SURROUNDING
CONTEXT
The architecture and interior design studio AW² has always created projects with high added value, employing a customized bioclimatic approach in symbiosis with the surrounding context.
This approach to sustainable architecture, rooted in the studio’s identity, echoes the values and environmental principles upheld by Coucoo Cabanes, a company that advocates «a living biodiversity and a better interaction between humans and nature». This collaboration was born out of these shared values.
In June 2024, AW² delivered four new cabins to complement the existing 25 cabins implanted over a 150-hectare site in the village of Chassey-lès Montbozon in Franche-Comté, France.
A living biodiversity and a better interaction between humans and nature.
The four cabins on the Grands Lacs estate are the first in a series of collaborations between the studio and Coucoo Cabanes. Here, architecture and nature live in symbiosis. Guests are drawn to the property in order to experience a sense of humility and tranquility in the presence of nature’s majesty.
These new cabins are designed over three levels housed in a protective envelope. The cabin’s design is reminiscent of a bud just before it blossoms: the external structure opens up to reveal the interior spaces, sheltered but open to the surrounding landscape.
The first level, raised on stilts, opens onto the view and the gentle breeze. This vast, protected terrace allows guests to live outside, sheltered from the sun and rain. The second level houses the bedroom. The open bay windows allow the space to be naturally ventilated, whilst enjoying the views. The third level features a Nordic bath. This is where guests can unwind, immersed in the water and the treetops. At this height, the views are breathtaking.
Whether by oneself or accompanied, the terrace allows guests to soak up the views whilst reconnecting with the ever-present natural world.
The AW²- designed cabins respect the existing biodiversity as they emerge from the trees on the periphery of the nature reserve.
Whether open or closed, their façades – the two protective envelopes – offer unobstructed views of the forest and lakes.
The outer structure is either closed or perforated. It acts as a filter, providing shelter, framing views, protecting from the sun and wind, and creating a strong connection with the natural world in such close proximity.
Bespoke Design.
The wooden furniture has been specifically designed to blend in with the architecture of the cabin. Positioned in the center, the bed also serves as a space divider in the bedroom. The lounge area is created by a simple curved bench and a coffee table. Opposite, guests can find the coffee and tea amenities. Towards the back of the cabin, screened by the headboard, the washbasin and dry toilet have been integrated. Finally, the wardrobe and shelving unit complete the layout in the opposite corner.
Thermal comfort, provided by the high-performance insulation of the envelope, is enhanced by the openings on the opposing façades. This allows cross-air circulation, further assisted by a fan positioned above the bed.
The space is optimized, predominantly open plan, and offers a constant visual connection with the landscape outside.
SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE & LOCAL PRODUCTION
In this project, the choice of materials and construction methods accentuates the experience of total contact with nature. The location of each cabin is determined by the opportunities and vulnerabilities of the site. The aim is to protect the natural environment whilst creating the best possible experience for the guests.
The Art of Living Well
~by Ilona Lee
"Imagine living in a home where the architecture feels like an extension of the natural world, where water flows with purpose, food is sourced from regenerative gardens, and energy is harvested from the sun, all without losing an ounce of elegance. This is luxury that not only endures but enriches."
"For those of us who curate exceptional living experiences, the question is not how to balance sustainability with aesthetics, but how to amplify both. The finest homes and properties today are not just beautiful; they are alive—adapting, evolving, and regenerating. They offer more than sanctuary, they offer vitality."
As a Global Wellness Real Estate Advisor, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the intersection of elegance and sustainability in properties around the world. There is a new wave of homes where regenerative living is no longer an afterthought but a foundational principle.
Whether it’s through advanced water systems, zero-waste energy solutions, or biophilic designs that reconnect us to nature, these homes represent the epitome of modern luxury. They offer an environment where well-being and beauty are not only intertwined but indistinguishable.
In the IM movement, we celebrate this vision of living well. We believe that the future of luxury lies in homes that inspire us, heal us, and connect us to something greater. They are spaces that empower us to live with intention, surrounded by beauty, and grounded in a commitment to the planet and ourselves.
As we look ahead, let us redefine what it means to live well. Let us embrace regenerative living as not just a trend, but as the ultimate art form—the art of creating spaces where luxury, sustainability, and well-being coexist in perfect harmony. Let's talk. ~Ilona Lee, info@ilonalee.com.

Edgar Arevalo
- In Conversation with Ilona Lee
Meet Edgar Arevalo, an Associate at Loring Consulting Engineers, Inc. Edgar has more than 10 years of experience in energy engineering and sustainable design. He has been involved in multiple LEED BD+C and ID+C projects, as well as NYC Green School Guide projects.
What role do policy and regulation play in shaping sustainable practices in NYC real estate?
Government policies and regulations serve as essential checks for real estate developers, ensuring their projects align with greenhouse gas reduction goals set by cities and regions. Ultimately, the real estate sector focuses on profitability, which raises the question: who would openly acknowledge that their buildings could contribute more fossil fuel emissions through local heating systems or increased electricity consumption from fossil fuel-powered plants? While some industry voices advocate for a "free market" approach, this perspective often neglects the urgent environmental needs. This is where government intervention and public sector engagement become critical.
Beyond LEED certification, what other sustainability standards are gaining prominence in the industry?
In addition to LEED certification, the WELL Building Standard is gaining traction in real estate, with the Fitwel standard following closely. Unlike LEED, these standards prioritize the health and well-being of building occupants rather than specific sustainability metrics. Additionally, Passive House certification is becoming increasingly popular due to its significantly reduced carbon footprint.
How are architects and designers re-imagining urban spaces to enhance sustainability?
Architects and designers are increasingly integrating rooftop gardens to blend natural environments with urban settings. For example, my office building features a rooftop bee farm, addressing the global issue of bee population decline.
Rooftop gardens also mitigate the heat island effect common in buildings without high solarreflective materials, helping to reduce cooling demands and electricity usage during summer months.
Additionally, architects are exploring innovative concepts like purple roofs, which are essentially green roofs equipped with advanced stormwater management systems.
Another key strategy for enhancing urban sustainability is the adaptive reuse of existing structures. A prime example is the transformation of old warehouses and factories in Industry City into modern office and community spaces. This approach often proves to be the most cost-effective sustainability solution, as it avoids the upfront expenses associated with new construction.
What challenges does NYC face in achieving net-zero energy buildings?
One of the primary challenges NYC encounters in reaching net-zero energy for existing buildings is retrofitting the electrical grid to support newer, more energy-intensive HVAC and domestic hot water systems.
A significant aspect of this is heat pump technology. While more efficient than traditional electric resistance heating, heat pumps increase power demand and longterm electricity consumption during both winter and summer months, whereas past concerns primarily focused on summer. Although heat pumps eliminate the need for locally burned fossil fuels in boilers and hot water heaters, they still increase demand on fossil fuel power plants to generate additional electricity.
The crucial concern is whether older buildings can handle the increased electrical load if their local grids are outdated. If not, building owners or real estate firms may need to invest in electrical consultants and contractors to replace the existing grid with one capable of supporting new technology.
Such upgrades can be complicated. Assuming a building has a robust local grid and the appropriate heat pump technology installed, it often leads to tension between architects and engineers over functionality versus aesthetics. This dynamic can create conflicts regarding sustainability and visual appeal. Questions arise about the placement of HVAC equipment—if the mechanical equipment room (MER) is oversized, it might occupy valuable space or disrupt the visual integrity of the design. Concerns about equipment visibility on the roof can also detract from the overall aesthetic.
These challenges require collaboration between engineers and architects throughout the project to find balanced solutions.

The marine industry does not escape from environmental challenges and the need to meet the sector’s decarbonization needs. Boat builders and equipment manufacturers are slowly but surely setting a course towards ecology. Technological and eco-responsible innovations are becoming increasingly common in the boating industry.
The Cannes Yachting Festival, Europe’s largest in-water boat show, therefore naturally decided to contribute to this by highlighting the efforts and energy show exhibitors are putting into boat building, propulsion, waste management, end-of-life management, eco-design, optimization, innovative materials, and so on, to build the future of the marine sector.
CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL 2024
Following the Path to Green Innovation.
In line with the Green Route launched in 2022, this year the Cannes Yachting Festival launched a new Innovation Route. It brought together a selection around forty technological and eco-friendly marine innovations identified by dedicated signage visitors can follow.
"We were proud to welcome almost 700 boats, with 120 as world premiers, and 640 exhibitors. Once again our visitors were able to see the crème de la crème of the marine industry, but this year we are pleased to be accommodating around 40 boats, innovations and services that are part of an eco-friendly and de-carbonization approach for the marine industry. There is still a long way to go in making yachting clean, but an increasing number of initiatives are moving things forward and this Innovation Route is a good demonstration of this,"

Dittmer Claims Victory in Longines Hampton Classic 5* Grand Prix
Erwin Wins $75,000 Hampton Classic 2* Grand Prix presented by the Deslauriers Family and Lynne Tarnopol.
The 49th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show concluded with the Longines Hampton Classic 5* Grand Prix, where Rene Dittmer of Germany raced to victory with one of only two double-clear rounds. He and Corsica X stopped the clock in 37.55 seconds to close their summer on a high, earning the winner’s share of the $400,000 purse.
"It’s just unbelievable to come here and win again,” said Dittmer, who won the $39,000 Flecha Azul 5* Speed Stake in 2023. “It really means a lot to me to win in front of this amazing crowd. My horse was unbelievable this week; she jumped five clear rounds and didn’t have a rail down all week. I’m really grateful that Mark Miness trusts me with this horse. I’m super happy and still can’t quite believe that this win happened in such a prestigious event
"I was really working on being consistent, clear and not too reckless in the jump-off,” Gochman said. “I was super happy with my horse today. He’s an incredibly scopey, careful horse. I tried very hard to present everything to go smoothly for him, and I couldn’t be happier with him.”
“I have an unbelievable horse,” Matz said. “Since I first got him, I’ve thought he is the best horse I’ve ever ridden. I’m so happy to have him with me at this level.”

of Polish Cinema in New York.
From Pola Negri to Kieślowski, scheduled for October 23-27, 2024, in New York, is a tribute to the rich legacy of Polish cinema and its groundbreaking filmmakers, whose works have shaped the history of global cinema. The event honors renowned directors such as Andrzej Wajda, Jerzy Skolimowski, Andrzej Munk, and Krzysztof Kieślowski, all of whom have left an indelible mark on both Polish and international film landscapes. At the same time, it celebrates Pola Negri, a pioneering Polish actress who achieved international stardom during the silent film era and became one of the first major Hollywood icons.
The event will begin on October 23, 2024, at the Polish Consulate General in New York, with a screening of The Polish Dancer (1917), one of Pola Negri’s early works. The silent film will be accompanied by live music performed by celebrated jazz musicians Krzysztof Medyna and Andrzej Winnicki. Both musicians are renowned for their work in the Komeda Project, where they reinterpret the compositions of legendary Polish jazz composer Krzysztof Komeda. Their jazz performances, marked by improvisation and a fusion of traditional jazz with classical and folk influences, will bring a modern, dynamic interpretation to the silent film, heightening the emotional impact of Negri’s performance.
This unique collaboration, set against the historic atmosphere of the Polish Consulate’s landmark building, will create a memorable tribute to Negri’s groundbreaking work.

Known to many as the “queen of the beauty industry”, Sydell Miller was guided in every aspect of her life by her family’s mantra: “Think, Believe, Dream, Dare.”
From her very first forays into fashion and the beauty business, to her innumerable philanthropic endeavors, and the collection of fine art and design that she surrounded herself with, Miller lived a life of beauty, both inside and out.
This November, Miller’s extraordinary collection will take center stage as the crown jewel of Sotheby’s marquee sales week in New York. Encompassing masterpieces of Modern and Contemporary art, sculpture, and icons of design, this collection unites the finest works across periods, styles, and forms.

I collect pieces I love. Each piece I collect speaks to me in a language of art and design and always excited me when I saw them for the first time. Even today, these pieces still make my heart flutter with joy. I never collected from just one period in time or style. Always collected things that I connected to through their beauty
~Sydell Miller
Sydell Miller was a great 20th century collector, and the roll call of great artists and designers in her collection speak to both the breadth of her vision and the depth of her connoisseurship. What stands out is the thread that runs through every painting, sculpture and object – that of Miller’s eye for beauty as she innately understood it. We are thrilled to celebrate her lifetime of creativity, innovation and philanthropy through the artworks that were her private sanctuary and inspiration."
~ CHARLES F. STEWART, SOTHEBY’S CEO
Reflecting how Sydell Miller lived with her collection – where fine art and design coexisted in perfect harmony – approximately 90 works will be presented together in landmark Evening and Day sales at Sotheby’s New York this November, with additional works offered in sales throughout this Fall, expected to achieve in the region of $200 million. The sales will be preceded by a series of curated exhibitions in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Taipei and Los Angeles.
Together, the works speak to the awe-inspiring power of beauty in all its forms: from an enthralling example of Monet’s iconic Nymphéas to Kandinsky’s explosion of geometric exuberance; from Picasso’s first depiction of a female artist to an elegant Matisse portrait from wartime France; from an extraordinary work by Yves Klein executed at the height of his career; to unique and defining commissions by François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne.
A further selection of works showcasing the full breadth of Miller’s collecting pursuits will be featured in three dedicated online sales. The first online sale will celebrate Miller’s keen eye for fashion, followed by an auction celebrating the collection’s expansive range of ‘objets d’art’, and another featuring exquisite furniture, decorative art, and silver. Miller’s impeccable taste in jewelry will also be showcased in Sotheby’s sales of Magnificent Jewels and Fine Jewels in December as part of The Luxury Sales series.
Sydell Miller was an impassioned collector, with a great eye for the exceptional and beautiful in all fields. She had an intrinsic love of art and the idea of buying works as a matter of investment or speculation seemed anathema to her. It was rather a natural extension of an aesthetic that permeated her every activity and pursuit. While she welcomed opinions and recommendations, her choices were entirely her own. Meeting nearly 30 years ago, sharing our love for art and being on the other end of the telephone with her at auction, was one of the thrills of my early career. Learning from her about the essential aspects of success in business and life: conducting yourself thoughtfully, ethically and honestly was a lesson I've treasured even more.

SYDELL MILLER ’S LEGACY & PHILANTHROPY
Miller was also the recipient of many prestigious awards. She was the first non-hairdresser elected to the National Cosmetology Association’s Hall of Fame, named one of the “Top 50 Women Business Owners in America” by Working Women Magazine, and received the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation Legacy Award, creating countless scholarships for cosmetology students.
Her remarkable legacy lives on in these philanthropic endeavors, and in tribute to her commitment to charity, a portion of the auction proceeds will benefit Cleveland Clinic Women’s Comprehensive Health and Research Center, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Sydell L. Miller Elephant Care & Visitor Center at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Sydell Miller was a gracious host, known for her kindness and compassion and remaining true to her core values throughout her life. She was, in the words of those close to her, “as sweet as the chocolate she loved.”
Guided by this spirit of generosity, the Miller name has long been synonymous with charitable giving. She served on the boards of the American Cancer Society of Palm Beach, BBSI, the Cleveland Clinic, Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, Norton Museum of Art, Palm Beach Civic Association, and Palm Beach County United Way.
In her later life, Sydell Miller’s devotion to philanthropy took center stage. Among the many institutions and causes that she championed was the Cleveland Clinic, home to the Sydell & Arnold Miller Family Pavilion and Heart and Vascular Institute – now the top-ranked cardiology hospital in the United States.

Thomas Houseago's "Night Sea Journey" Illuminates Lévy Gorvy Dayan
This fall, Lévy Gorvy Dayan presents "Thomas Houseago: Night Sea Journey," a highly anticipated exhibition marking the artist’s first New York solo show in a decade.
Running from September 9 to October 19, 2024, the exhibit transforms the gallery’s Beaux-Arts townhouse into a sprawling canvas for Houseago's innovative exploration of material and psychological depth.
"Night Sea Journey" arrives in tandem with Houseago’s completion of a monumental 162-foot-long sculpture, a gift to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
This exhibition continues Houseago's architectural ambition, evident in the expansive and multifaceted works displayed across three floors of the gallery.
"The art in this show, created during a period of personal recovery, showcases some of the finest work he has ever made. As one of Thomas’s earliest supporters, I am honored to host his grand return.”
"Thomas
Houseago is one of our greatest living sculptors, with each work representing a bold new step for the medium," says Dominique Lévy, founding partner of Lévy Gorvy Dayan.
This presentation reveals Houseago’s first body of work since his breakdown in 2019. His new sculptures, forged in wood, bronze, steel, and plaster, exhibit a raw, almost sentient quality.
Despite his prior assertion that he could not “work small,” Houseago’s pieces in "Night Sea Journey" vary dramatically in scale and theme. A striking bronze minotaur greets visitors at the entrance, embodying the tension between instinct and reason.
On the second floor, Houseago’s foray into painting is highlighted through threedimensional still lifes, which juxtapose the grandeur of his sculptures with the simplicity of everyday objects.
“The eggs, white plaster and redwood sculptures, are set against a textured black tapestry that suggests a darkened grotto,” Houseago explains. “They represent genesis, our existence, and our story that continues.”
Houseago’s work often weaves together personal and cultural mythologies with natural elements.
In "Night Sea Journey," motifs like chimerical figures, owls, eggs, and skulls coalesce into a narrative of struggle, loss, and renewal. The monumental minotaur, a symbol of transformation, stands amidst large-scale redwood sculptures, including totemic owls and dynamic figures that evoke an enigmatic forest scene.
This installation contrasts with the darker, introspective ambiance of the second floor’s egg sculptures and the intimate “treehouse” gallery, which features a table scape of redwood carvings evoking both companionship and mourning.

It is more than an exhibition; it is a powerful, introspective voyage through the artist’s psyche, making it a must-see event this fall in New York.
Accompanying the exhibition is a film directed by Andrew Dominik, screened daily at the gallery.

Following his 2011 solo show at L&M Arts in Los Angeles, this exhibition reaffirms Houseago’s profound impact on contemporary sculpture and painting.
“The sun rises and the moon rises; everything is sound and light waves, energy.”
Inspired by Edvard Munch’s 1909 mural "The Sun," Houseago’s vibrant painting serves as a memorial to those lost and a tribute to the enduring presence of the living.
“I love the look of the moon and the sun setting on the ocean. It’s been a lifesaver for me and has immense meaning,” Houseago reflects.
