Located at the northern edge of the Abbas Abad Hills, Tehran Mixed Use Complex is a mixed-use project including retail, office, hotel, serviced apartments and underground car park covering 50.000 m2 building area which is conceived by the planning authority of Tehran as the cultural and recreational hub of the city as part of the TOD (Transit-Oriented Development). During my internship at EAA London, I was responsible with the correct synchronization between the 3D model and construction documents, accurate modelling and integration of the transportation infrastructure including the metro station and bus terminal, producing CAD data in reference with the printed documents, reconfiguration of the masses and reorganization of carparking lots in changing circumstances, and preperation of the initial renders showing the changes in design before the meetings with the partners. I used AutoCAD, SketchUp, Lumion, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Indesign throughout the project. In order to increase the speed of my workflow, I used many external plugins on SketchUp. My work on the infrastructure models and sections significantly affected the project and we discussed the viable options to improve it. I was also tasked with designing a footbridge, a bus terminal, a continous circulation in shopping area covered with a glass roof.

The project is designed as a car-free zone offering an accessible network of open public spaces. The project site is a destination point for the route starting with the Imam Khomeini Mousalla Mosque, coming from the urban public spaces on the south-north axis which is defined as “the spiritual axis”. The project aims to give a chance to new interconnections with the surrounding urban fabric. It also connects the main axes to the Taleghani Park on the west via a series of open, semi open spaces, green terraces and finally a pedestrian bridge. Another point is to connect the ceremonial axes of the Mousalla Mosque and the Holy Defense Museum across Haghani Highway to the urban fabric and Mirdamad Avenue on the north while providing a passage between metro station and bus station on the same level. The permeability of the project promotes a ‘hinge’ point for various routes. It is a significant transition point at the junction of culture, recreation and retail facilities.

Mass model of the whole metro station

One of the first tasks I undertook was to model Shahid Haghani Metro Station located under the B block. The task was important because the design would be revised according to the volume and exact location of the metro station’s air ducts and pedestrian access. I evaluated the metro station plans and sections given by the authorities and work on to produce an accurate model of it. Some of the data was in the form of scanned documents so I had to check each drawing according to scanned documents. I used AutoCAD for it. After I collect the required vector data, I started to model the station on SketchUp and placed it into the proposal using the existing air duct as a reference point. As a team, we re-evaluated the situation over the model I prepared and decided to adapt the floors considering the new circumstances.

Increasing transportation alternatives and pedestrianizing the area was the main goal of the project. As a replacement of the existing footbridge, I designed and modelled a new footbridge crossing Haqhani Highway connecting Aqaqiya Park, Taleghani Park and the second floor of the complex, considering the designs of the other footbridges in the proposal. Two escalators connect the two sides of the highway to the footbridge and it provides a pleasant alternative to the pedestrians. I used stone paving and grass surfaces as they were used in the other bridges and they offer more natural experience and a great view of forests of the surrounding parks, away from the busy traffic. Due to the dramatic and sudden changes in the climate conditions of Tehran, an openable glass cover for open spaces was requested from the client. I proposed the approximate layout of the area to implement a glass cover and create the model

Reading Heights, designed by Emre Arolat Architecture, is the firm’s first project approved and being constructed in the UK. The project comprise of a major extension and conversion of an office block into residential units. It also reconfigures the existing Clarendon House and creates mews houses in the courtyard of the 1980s building, accommodating a total of 92 flats. I was accepted to the award-winning practive Emre Arolat Architecture by London Office Director Uygar Yüksel and participated in the Erasmus+ Traineeship Mobility Programme to receive my grant and travel to the UK with a Tier 2 Government Authorised Exchange Visa. As an Intern Architect, I involved in the project during the planning application process within the design development stage of the project. Being the only intern in the office, I was able to take many important responsibilities. I got to work on a little bit of everything from producing 3D models on SketchUp using AutoCAD files, designing detailed interiors for residential units and lobby, doing research for the desired materials, preparing initial renders and printouts of the documents before important meetings. I also participated in the meetings with the clients and videoconferences with the partners in İstanbul office.

My work was mainly covering the revisions to be made on the models including changes in the furnishing decisions and textures representing some of the particular materials.

In the first day at EAA Some major changes have been made in order to comply with the planning conditions without harming the project’s fundamental values.

In the last day at EAA

During the revisions of the project, I worked closely with the other members of the team. Liaising with each member of the team provided a great advantage for us to produce accurate drawings and digital models. Since the project was discussed with and reported to the partners at the Ä°stanbul branch weekly, having comprehensive knowledge of the revisions as much as possible was crucial.

Folkart Time is a mixed-use development covering 27.400 m2 construction area with 369 residential units, 271 offices, 46 commercial unit, and a school building. The Project separates private and public spaces with a diagonal 2 storey mass and defines commercial and private courtyards. The design can be defined as a collaboration of physical parameters and social culture within an optimum spatial state. The courtyards take on an important role to support this. Courtyard perimeters serve as small scale commercial units. The detachment of the residential block from the transformative residential block allows more sunlight to illuminate the courtyards. As a Construction Intern, I worked 6 days a week for a month and I observed both rough and fine construction applications, managed and controlled the installation processes, checked compatibility between on-site applications and the project data and report the results to engineers and technicians. I was also responsible with the keys so I was informed first before each application. As a team, we were assigned to prepare presentations explaining the construction proceses every week I found the opportunity to see the latest technologies used in the construction industry and work with very hardworking engineers and technicians.

RESIDENTIAL BLOCK B

OFFICE BLOCK B

OFFICE BLOCK A

2 Office blocks contain 371 offices with 3 different types. These blocks surround the commercial courtyard and the bazaar on the ground floor which comprise 46 retail units. separates the private courtyard from public access. During my internship, I was able to observe both rough and fine construction works. In the office blocks and B Block of the residential block, I checked and investigate the rough construction applications. I divided my daily schedule in order to see and report as much on-site application as I can. Every Monday morning, between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. I was informed by the engineers and technicians about what types of works will be executed in the site this week. I arranged my visits according to the briefs I recieved.

I observed some of the most fundamental rough construction works which are used in reinforced concrete constructions including the construction of R.C. flat slabs with table type heavy load scaffoldÄąng system, assembly, disassembly and transportation of column formworks and slab scaffolding, concreting in extremely hot wheater and the precautions to reduce the negative effects of the high temperatures on concrete, construction of the AAC, drywall and steel non-structural walls, construction of reinforcement steel bars in beams, columns, slabs and shearwalls, pouring of screet etc. Each morning, I start with checking the rough construction works until 12:30 p.m. before the sun gets real hot.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

RESIDENTIAL BLOCK A

Residential block A was not being constructed until the half of the schedule past because the only heavy vehichle access between the containers and the construction site was provided here as a ramp. Flat slab construction with table type heavy load scaffoldÄąng system was very fast, almost 4 floors constructed throughout my month-long internship at Folkart. Moreover, each intern was assigned to different floors in order to oversee and control the applications made in the school building. I had all the keys on the ground floor and I was responsible to contact and start the applications in each room. After the work is done, I locked the room to keep it clean.

I observed some of the most important fine construction works as well. The middle school building was scheduled to be finished within a month so it was a great opportunity for me to take my part in the finalization of a school building’s construction. I was able to investigate the construction of curtain walls, longitudinal sunshades, polyurethane based coating and water proofing application, stone wool heat insulation applications, landscape applications and their insulation processes, electricity, plumbing and machinery works, implementation of windows, doors, emergency doors, suspended ceiling, railings, parquet floor, tile floor, PVC floor and many more. I move to the school building every day to check fine construction works after 12:30 p.m. until 17:30.
