- THE GIVEN SITE IS in AN EXISTING LIGHT INDUSTRIAL ZONE, SURROUNDED BY RAIL CORRIDORS, COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC ROUTES AND BIKE TRAILS. THE PROJECT TAKES THESE ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS INTO CONSIDERATION, ORIENTING ITSELF ACCORDINGLY WHILE IMPLEMENTING COMPLIMENTARY PROGRAMS TO THE EXISTING URBAN TEXTURE. - THE ADJACENT INDUSTRIAL BUILDING IS INTEGRATED AND USED FOR INDOOR, HYDROPONIC FARMING, SUPPORTED WITH A ROOFTOP GREENHOUSE. THE PRODUCE IS SOLD AND CONSUMED IN THE COMMUNITY MARKET ON SITE. THE RESIDENTS OF THE BUILDING ARE PROVIDED THEIR PERSONAL GROWING SPACES AS WELL. PREFABRICATED MODULES CAN ALSO BE ATTACHED TEMPORARILY TO THE BUILDING FRONT TO MODIFY AND SUPPORT THE GROUND LEVEL PROGRAMS AS NEEDED.
BUILDING PULLS BACK FROM THE RAIL CORRIDOR, massing and landscaping between the trains and units mitigate noise levels.

asimov chair
In collaboration with / LARA ISAAC / FOR 3B ELECTIVE AT UWSA completion / 2015 / CAMBRIDGE / CANADA
ilhan_ozdemir
portfolio/2016
as part of 3rd year structural design/build elective, our team took on designing a chair that represents ideas of the acclaimed author isaac asimov. his humanist philosophy is emphasized through the dynamic and social aspects of the chair while the form and structure pays tribute to asimov’s work and his interest in space. The result is asimov chair; it is consisted of two independently rotating rings, the main body which supports the rings with 4 spokes each and 2 different seating elements for the separate chair and bench functions.
manifesto // There is no up or down in space, where gravity holds no domain. There are no directions either, what is right becomes left a moment later. Space might be, the ideal vacuum for thinking after all, granting freedom from bias or prejudice. taking away our sense of orientation. by nature it forces us to be constantly versatile. through which, we could become truly neutral, opening our minds to all points of view. Asimov embraced this freedom and the Asimov chair is built on it. The chair rests in motion, all positions are correct, all rotations are right, all directions lead somewhere. It embraces the individual, to carry them through physical space; changing their perspectives constantly. as a bench, it demands 2 or more to sit. a socio-political collision is required, to balance ideas, perspective and gravity. There is no polarization, but only ideas, vision and revolution.

2.02 exploded axo
- asimov chair has 2 main modes of sitting, noted as chair and bench modes. - the chair mode provides seating surface for a single user whereas the bench mode can accomodate between 1-6 people. - the bench mode performs better with more than a single user since multiple users balance the rotating ring by sitting on opposite sides. This opposition brings balance to the whole surface. - in chair mode, the structure is balanced on the larger ring and the stem which can rotate independently from each other. this means the user can pivot the chair with their feet on the ground, turning the balancing ring to rotate the whole chair. orbiting movement can be achieved by taking the feet off the ground and moving the chair by changing the center of gravity through body movements.

the chair was modeled in 3D, from which shop drawings were produced. 18.4mm plywood sheets were cut and laminated to produce parts.
process // the force calculations were complicated by many different types of movement that the chair offers. indeterminate forces were involved, thus simplifying assumptions were made to resolve these forces. we overstructured the chair slightly to make up for these simplifications. in addition, the stem is supported with an aluminum tube around a steel rod to accomodate the independent rotation of the upper and lower rings.

Liberty complex is a high density building proposal to be located at toronto’s liberty village. The design brings together corporate and creative office spaces alongside a farmers market, retail and recreation areas, adding new programs to the commercial core on the adjacent lot. F.A.R. 7 is maintained while the high massing density of the context is mitigated by orientation and form of the building. northeast corner of the building terraces away from the major intersection while north elevation gently flexes back in order to relieve the alley condition created with the neighbouring building.
