CAPPADOCIA TOWNHOUSE & KONAK
8
Design proposal for the Cappadocian house concept aims to establish an interpretive contemporary architectural vision that draws inspiration from the regional urban fabric without directly imitating it.
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
Core architectural principles and traditions observed in the region are encapsulated and presented in a new form, intended to demonstrate an alternative architectural approach to the status quo of placeless apartment typology that has been taking over Anatolia.
9
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
Main design elements of the Cappadocian House: - Shaded garden/courtyard as an outdoor living space, - Covered exterior circulation apparatus used for internal traffic, - Semi-independent rooms, inspired by local, traditional rooms, - Alcoves, creating flexible shaded spaces on the street side. - Modular approach, high adaptability to different levels of density.

AEGEAN VILLA & KONAK
Design proposal for the Aegean aims to harmonize and embody unique characteristics observed in the region. Aegean Villa is the first density variation for the region.
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
The two-storey villa takes a cubic form, laid out on one and half meter square grid. A two-to-one ratio of vertical-to-horizontal openings is established (3m full-height glazing with 1.5m mullion spacing), representing proportional values of most traditional konaks. A perimeter gabion wall marks the boundaries of the open concept ground level (tashlik), integrating the garden into the house. The open-hayat is re-interpreted as a shaded breezeway wrapping around the whole structure, creating an interstitial space that the rooms can expand into when desired.

Local Denizli Travertine is used for exterior cladding of the facade. Light colored stone is preffered to minimize heat absorption.
Olive trees thrive in highly saline and sandy soil of the coastline, making it a natural choice for gardens and orchards.

Tashlik (ground floor) programs are located on an elevated platform, surrounded by the garden on all sides. The site boundaries are defined by the garden wall instead of the building walls, rendering the garden as a natural extension of the interior spaces. Elevation difference between the platform and the soil level allows for views to the outside while blocking views of the inside from the street level.

Main floor of the Aegean Konak consists of two wings and a central eyvan, all connected through an open hayat (hallway). Rooms can be arranged and customized based on the specific needs of inhabitants. Flexibility through modularity is an important feature of the design and makes the proposed design approach adaptable to a range habitation types. Each wing of the Aegean Konak could be laid out to serve as a large independent master room, smaller sleeping rooms or a mix of both since the room designs are based on the same footprint and structural elements. This also means that the structure can be easily expanded in the future without taking away main characteristics of the design. An important take-away from the morphological study of Anatolian typologies was to consider the complete life and evolution of the house, which is reflected in the design as modularity, repeatability and scalability of the architectural elements.
29

Street view of the Aegean Konak. This larger iteration is intended for multi-generational use, with private rooms that share social spaces such as the kitchen, garden and living rooms.
Perspective view of the Aegean Apartment iteration. This variation tests the concept in a larger density scale. It offers “bachelor-type” rooms that share a large kitchen and social spaces on the ground level.
30
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
“Eyvan” of the Aegean Konak. The Eyvan is an outdoor room, extending off the circulatory apparatus. It is a secondary social space on the upper level. Eyvan is supported with shading panels inspired by traditional “kafes” but is not isolated from the elements beyond that.
Spa overlooking the walled-garden in Aegean Konak. A wing of the ground level is proposed as a marble clad spa space with a small pool/jacuzzi, sauna and showers. This program is a nod to the traditional Turkish Hammam and is practical in the Aegean context where people have a strong connection to the sea on a daily basis. Either after a long day after work or a leasurely swin in the Aegean, spending time at the spa is a welcome part of the daily rituals of Aegean people.

Roof is designed to allow for green roof application.
Modernized version of wood ceilings used on the interior.
Projections provide cover to the platforms underneath.
Agricultural and wooden products can be stored outdoors, under the projections.
Outdoor terrace is the main social space.
39
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
Ground floor plan of the konak shares the same planning logic with the smaller kosk. Ground floor is reserved for kitchen, storage and mechanical functions. A lounge with three glazed sides is introduced. This is intended as an extension of the garden into the house with operable glazed panels. An interior hearth that doubles as a fire oven is located in the center, representing the traditional communal oven.
40

41
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
Upper level of the konak offers four flexible rooms which can be converted between living spaces to sleeping quarters on demand. Two ensuites and one common washroom is provided for maximum independency of the rooms from each other. Each room can be considered a small apartment, sharing circulation and social spaces (Hayat), making up the large konak. Rooms are private and Hayat is the social space of the konak, acting as the glue that brings these independent rooms together, like an internal street.

Green roof can be used to grow crops for the household. Mountainous terrain makes creates a challenge against farming of common crops and most land is used for hazelnut production. Green roofs provide valuable space to grow additional crops while blending the buildings in with the natural landscape.
44
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
Black Sea geography is made up of valles and mountain series. Terraces overlooking the valley and sea are preferably social spaces for the local population.
The hearth is located at the heart of the building with a double chimney support. Inspired by communal ovens, a fire oven is provided at the ground level and a fireplace is located on the upper floor.

ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
- The structure is strategically located on the tidal island, maintaining a low profile against winds while maximizing glazed surfaces oriented to the solar trajectory. - The design takes advantage of the natural slope of the site by burrowing its back against prevailing winds, minimizing exposed surfaces. - Radiant heating and thermal mass is provided to make use of passive solar strategies. - Kaia is adjacent to ancient ruins on the island, providing shelter to visitors and making the ruins more accessible through shared circulation, landscaping and utilities. - Building is designed with a combination of permanent and non-permanent materials, considering the after-life of the structure in harmony with the adjacent ruins.
50
Kaia design aims to harmonize with its surroundings, creating a sense of belonging to its unique environment and elements.
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
Kaia Lodge is composed of 2 storeys: Upper level provides accomodation and cooking programs while the lower level houses the spa, greenhouses and service programs. Exposed site elements on the lower level promote interaction with the natural site.

Scottish landscape is almost entirely composed of smooth, horizontal surfaces, carved away by waves and winds for centuries. It is rare to see any naturally vertical forms in the landscape. Due to harsh contrast, a vertical break in the horizontal landscape provides an inherent monumental quality. Thus, the building flows with the surrounding geography through its horizontal layout and expressed rooflines while the chimney serves as a terrestrial lighthouse.

ASIMOV
CHAIR & BENCH
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
As part of third year structural design/build elective, our team took on designing a chair that represents ideas of the acclaimed author Isaac Asimov. His humanist philosophy is emphasized through the dynamic and social aspects of the chair while the form and structure pays tribute to Asimov’s work and his interest in space. The result is Asimov Chair; it is consisted of two independently rotating rings, the main body which supports the rings with 4 spokes each and 2 different seating elements for the separate chair and bench functions.
MANIFESTO // There is no up or down in space, Where gravity holds no domain. There are no directions either, What is right becomes left a moment later. Space might be, The ideal vacuum for thinking after all, Granting freedom from bias or prejudice. Taking away our sense of orientation. By nature it forces us to be Constantly versatile. Through which, We could become truly neutral, Opening our minds to all points of view. Asimov embraced this freedom And the Asimov chair is built on it. The chair rests in motion, All positions are correct, All rotations are right, All directions lead somewhere. It embraces the individual, To carry them through physical space; Changing their perspectives constantly. As a bench, it demands 2 or more to sit. A socio-political collision is required, To balance ideas, perspective and gravity. There is no polarization, but only ideas, Vision and revolution.
63
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
- Asimov Chair has two main modes of sitting, noted as chair and bench modes. - The chair mode provides seating surface for a single user whereas the bench mode can accomodate between 1-6 people. - The bench mode performs better with more than a single user since multiple users balance the rotating ring by sitting on opposite sides. This opposition brings balance to the whole surface. - In chair mode, the structure is balanced on the larger ring and the stem which can rotate independently from each other. This means the user can pivot the chair with their feet on the ground, turning the balancing ring to rotate the whole chair. Orbiting movement can be achieved by taking the feet off the ground and moving the chair by changing the center of gravity through body movements. 64

PROCESS //
The chair was modele in 3D, from whic shop drawings wer produced. 18.4mm plywood sheets wer cut and laminated t produce part
The force calculations were complicated by many different types of movement that the chair offers. Indeterminate forces were involved, thus simplifying assumptions were made to resolve these forces. We overstructured the chair slightly to make up for these simplifications. In addition, the stem is supported with an aluminum tube around a steel rod to accomodate the independent rotation of the upper and lower rings. CONSTRUCTION MODEL

LIBERTY TOWER
ILHAN OZDEMIR PORTFOLIO/2021
Liberty Tower is a high density building proposal to be located at Toronto’s Liberty Village. The design brings together corporate and creative office spaces alongside a farmers market, retail and recreation areas, adding new programs to the commercial core on the adjacent lot. F.A.R. 7 is maintained while the high massing density of the context is mitigated by orientation and form of the building. Northeast corner of the building terraces away from the major intersection while north elevation gently flexes back in order to relieve the alley condition created with the neighbouring building.
