- Kaia Lodge offers off-grid accomodation on brough of birsay, scotland. The building surfaces out of the landscape as a mediator between raw nature and culture. - Kaia brings together 3 main programs; accomodation, spa and a gourmet cooking school. sustainability and supporting programs such as solar arrays, greenhouse and composting systems are also integrated to achieve a self sufficient building.

- The structure is strategically located on the tidal island, maintaining a low profile against winds while maximizing glazed surfaces oriented to the solar trajectory. - The design takes advantage of the natural slope of the site by burrowing its back against prevailing winds, minimizing exposed surfaces. - radiant heating and thermal mass is provided to make use of passive solar strategies. - Kaia is adjacent to ancient ruins on the island, providing shelter to visitors and making the ruins more accessible through shared circulation, landscaping and utilities. - the building is designed with a combination of permanent and non-permanent materials, considering the after-life of the structure in harmony with the adjacent ruins.

Kaia design aims to harmonize with its surroundings, creating a sense of belonging to its unique environment and elements.

-scottish landscape is almost entirely composed of smooth, horizontal surfaces, carved away by waves and winds for centuries. it is rare to see any naturally vertical forms IN THE LANDSCAPE. Due to harsh contrast, a vertical break in the horizontal landscape provides an inherent monumental quality. - Thus, the building flows with the surrounding geography through its horizontal layout and expressed rooflines while the chimney serves as a terrestrial lighthouse.

asimov chair

In collaboration with / LARA ISAAC / 3B ELECTIVE course 2015 / CAMBRIDGE / CANADA

as part of 3rd year structural design/build elective, our team took on designing a chair that represents ideas of the acclaimed author isaac asimov. his humanist philosophy is emphasized through the dynamic and social aspects of the chair while the form and structure pays tribute to asimov’s work and his interest in space. The result is asimov chair; it is consisted of two independently rotating rings, the main body which supports the rings with 4 spokes each and 2 different seating elements for the separate chair and bench functions.

manifesto // There is no up or down in space, where gravity holds no domain. There are no directions either, what is right becomes left a moment later. Space might be, the ideal vacuum for thinking after all, granting freedom from bias or prejudice. taking away our sense of orientation. by nature it forces us to be constantly versatile. through which, we could become truly neutral, opening our minds to all points of view. Asimov embraced this freedom and the Asimov chair is built on it. The chair rests in motion, all positions are correct, all rotations are right, all directions lead somewhere. It embraces the individual, to carry them through physical space; changing their perspectives constantly. as a bench, it demands 2 or more to sit. a socio-political collision is required, to balance ideas, perspective and gravity. There is no polarization, but only ideas, vision and revolution.

3.07 section of bench mode

- asimov chair has 2 main modes of sitting, noted as chair and bench modes. - the chair mode provides seating surface for a single user whereas the bench mode can accomodate between 1-6 people. - the bench mode performs better with more than a single user since multiple users balance the rotating ring by sitting on opposite sides. This opposition brings balance to the whole surface. - in chair mode, the structure is balanced on the larger ring and the stem which can rotate independently from each other. this means the user can pivot the chair with their feet on the ground, turning the balancing ring to rotate the whole chair. orbiting movement can be achieved by taking the feet off the ground and moving the chair by changing the center of gravity through body movements.

process //

the chair was modeled in 3D, from which shop drawings were produced. 18.4mm plywood sheets were cut and laminated to produce parts.

the force calculations were complicated by many different types of movement that the chair offers. indeterminate forces were involved, thus simplifying assumptions were made to resolve these forces. we overstructured the chair slightly to make up for these simplifications.

during winter 2014 coop term, I had the opportunity to work for stantec architecture in edmonton. This exposed me to a rich variety of architectural projects and experience. My tasks included design studies, production of technical drawings, 3D masses, models and renderings. I also had the chance to contribute to multiple proposal and R&D projects. the projects I was involved with pertained to industrial, commercial, scientific and prefab building typologies. This variety really helped get a sense of specific requirements and considerations needed for each unique typology.
