CELEBRATE THE WORLD OF MUSIC at the FOLK REPUBLIC of BULLI It is with a great deal of pleasure and a more than a little bit of pride that we, at the Illawarra Folk Club, present our 26th annual festival. Every year is different and 2011 is no exception - it’s a combination of the old and the new. Old in the sense that we are welcoming back old friends like Eric Bogle and Ted Egan who joined forces in 1988 and helped propel our fledgling festival into the major event it is today. New in the sense that a whole new crop of performers like Ami Williamsom, CJ Shaw, Get Folked, Shanachie and The Barons of Tang, to name just a few, are bursting on the scene and adding new dimensions to the ever evolving music forms that go under the umbrella of folk. And what about the overseas artists we attract? Their numbers just keep growing and this year we have, among others, the 11 piece Orkestra Del Sol, who are out here for the Sydney Festival, Bettina Schelker from Switzerland, Chosani Afrique from Senegal , George Mann, Jim D’Ville and Sleepy Lou from the USA and Faye Blais from Canada.
Of course we are a not for profit organisation run entirely by our friendly volunteers to whom we say a monumental thank-you. I don’t want to get too far into mentioning specific people however I would be remiss if I didn’t pay tribute to Neil Rowsell, our festival Project Manager who has pulled the strings that have united all the parts of the organisation and Dave De Santi, our Artistic Director who has, for the 17th time ensured that our event is of the absolute highest quality. I’d also like to sincerely thank our former Secretary/ Treasurer, Ros Shieldhouse, who for so many years anchored our finances, membership and was the first point of contact for many of our festival goers. Ros and her partner, Albert moved to Queensland to be closer to family a few months ago. Thanks again to the sponsors and supporters who are featured on the back page of this programme. Particular thanks to Bluescope Steel our longest standing supporter who have stuck with us for many years, through thick and thin.
Don’t forget it’s a family affair and there’s a complete program for kids that runs throughout the event and, the kids are free.
We believe ‘The music didn’t die’ as Don McLean asserted in his iconic song ‘American Pie’ but is alive and well and living in festivals like ours.
At the Illawarra Folk Club we are acutely aware that Time will take its toll on existing workers and performers and we see one of our roles as encouraging and training the young musicians and entertainers of the future. Our Music School, a tribute to its director Ann Lehman, is held on the two days preceding the festival is fulfilling such a role. You can see evidence of its success in the special youth concerts at the Festival.
But - to use an old folk saying: ‘The proof of the pudding is in the eating’. So while you’re here, take a big bite of the music, poetry, dancing, feasting, sessioning , singing and relaxing and - I’ll see you at the bar and the 2012 festival!

Messages VIVA LA REPUBLIC! Early in 2009 I took a decision to step-back and reduce the pressure of having to direct the whole festival within a volunteer capacity and the demands of working, music making and family life. I have continued in the role of Artistic Director and handed many of the other organising duties to a core from the Festival Organising Committee – Russell Hannah, Neil Rowsell, Theresa Gregory, Graeme Morrison, Bob Williams, Rod Cork, Peter O’Neill, Bruce Jackson, Robyn Jackson, Terry Cole and Ros Shieldhouse. Many others have also stepped up as well to take more leading roles to make my life easier. You will see their names in the Volunteer acknowledgement in this program. It continues to be a privilege to be involved in presenting a truly unique and multi-award winning celebration of Australia’s and the world’s folk culture and heritage in the Illawarra. The move from Jamberoo to Bulli in 2006 was certainly exciting and challenging but now we are well established in the Northern Suburbs of Wollongong with much local support! This festival we’ve had a few more sponsorship setbacks with the loss and reduction in support of some of our previous major sponsors and the lack of the Heritage Hotel as a venue again but we’ve taken the risk of putting on a bigger festival than 2010 with 150 amazing acts and over 600 performers.
It is one of NSW’s premier music festivals and is organised totally
Coming from a varied cultural background it has been great to see the harmony that such an event provides between peoples from all over the world which leads nicely into the declaration of the Folk Republic of Bulli!
by volunteers. This has been estimated at being over $900,000 in the past and continues to grow.
When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground, you enter a whole different world. One full of inspiration, vision, creativity, harmony and community. A utopia that one could only wish it could last forever! The Festival continues to encourage and feature and nurture our young talent. It is important for them to be carrying on the tradition and for them to see our more experienced tradition bearers. Over the years Festival has also been a fine ambassador for Australia to the many visitors that have discovered folk music and have wanted an insight into Australian culture, history and social celebrations. It is also pleasing to see the Festival also contributes greatly to a number of local charities and organisations. At this festival the recipients of our support include SCARF, Greenacres, Bulli Primary School, Sandon Point Surf Club, Bulli Show Society and Bulli Uniting Church. Community partnerships began in earnest in 2001 with the major Guinness sponsorship and to date the festival would have provided over $80,000 back to the local community!
The ongoing encouragement received from the Northern Suburbs community and Wollongong City Council has been most inspiring not to mention the very friendly and amenable folk at the Greyhound Racing Club and the Harness Racing Club who have
The Illawarra Folk Festival, now in its 26th year, does a wonderful job of supporting local artists and bringing the region’s musical talent to life.

events, all of which strengthen pride within our city and local neighbourhoods by increasing interest and participation in the cultural life of the city.
The 2009 festival program encompasses 250 concerts with 600 performers at 11 venues throughout the city, providing an opportunity for diverse musical experiences for all ages over a 4 days period. Each year Wollongong City Council is proud to support a diverse range of citywide and local suburban based
Call for Community Partnerships The Illawarra Folk Festival is a community based event organised by volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk! The event has grown tremendously from its humble beginnings in 1985 to become a major stage in the Australian Folk Calendar and has been visited by thousands of patrons and performers over its history. Its future is dependent heavily on the goodwill 2
trusted our vision for the Bulli Showground in folk festival mode!
Many thanks are also due to our Gold sponsors BlueScope Steel, i98FM and the Illawarra Mercury and our other 62 Silver, Bronze supporters for believing in an event such as the folk festival. A large debt is owed to all the previous and current Festival Organising Committees and the many thousands of volunteers and performers who over the past 25 festivals have ensured the Festival continues. There is a great sense of achievement in presenting the Festival despite at times the many hours of work and personal sacrifices of family time. Once again I thank the amazing tolerance and ongoing support of my terrific wife Tania and son Sam who continue to share our musical journey. We trust all our efforts are appreciated and we value your ongoing support and constructive comment. We hope you continue to celebrate and enjoy the world of folk music at the Folk Republic of Bulli. So load up your guitars, blow your trumpets, bang your drum, shout your voice and squeeze your accordion - viva la folk revolution! David De Santi Artistic Director
Furthermore it attracts large numbers of visitors to the region which is great for our local economy. David Farmer General Manager City of Wollongong
I’d like to thank the large group of hard workers of the Illawarra Folk Festival who donate a large amount of their time to organise this event. I encourage everyone to attend the wonderful festival performances and enjoy this, the 24th Illawarra Folk Festival.
and ongoing support of volunteers, artists, other organisations, local, state and federal government and the business community.
Festival Opening Concerts and donations from the Festival, we have provided over $10,000 in cash to the recipient charities.
The festival since 2001, beginning with the major Guinness sponsorship, has provided over $80,000 to a number of charities including SCARF, Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres, Scouts groups, SES Branches, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and South Coast School for Children with Autism. Over the past 4 years in Bulli, through its Charity Bush Dances,
We continue to seek further partnerships with community and charity organisations as well to bolster our volunteer ranks. There are financial and social benefits for these organisations to be involved. So, if you are interested in helping us keep this great festival alive then please contact us.

Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Festival This may be your first folk festival, so here’s some ideas about what to do! • Buy your ticket on-line to save you money and time.
just take pot luck! Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch.
• Buy your camping ticket online as well as these are only issued with Season Tickets.
• However you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing, impromptu sessions....
• If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway and get to the main entry gate.
• Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind! Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site! You’ll discover music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see move onto another venue.
• If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main entry gate and head for the Festival Office. • Make sure you get a full programme when you do the ticket/armband exchange. This is your map to the venues, performers and general information. • Once you’ve parked the car head for the Global Green or the bar, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the programme. • There are 11 venues to choose from. You can either decide who you want to see and when or
• At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians will be up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions! • Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow friends when leaving!
• If all this fails, head for the bar or the Global Green. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Hint: Have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to do. • Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the venues there. 26th Illawarra Folk Festival 13–16 January 2011

Festival Features
In addition to the concerts there are a number of special events throughout the festival. Here’s a summary of some of them.
OPENING DANCE Wednesday 8pm Global Green Stage
The specially constructed Global Green stage at the Showground is the scene for the opening Bush Dance. Bring the kids, dancing shoes or an instrument to join the acoustic dance band. All the dances will be called and walked through.
LUNCH ITALIAN STYLE Thursday Midday-2pm Grandstand Restaurant
Enjoy a scrumptious lunch with the musical spirit of Italy. There’ll be pasta, sauce, lotsa panne (bread) and more to fill you tummy. Then enjoy the music of Italy with Zumpa and friends. A great tradition continues. Adults $15, Youth $7. Tickets available from the Festival Office from 10am on the day.
OPENING CHARITY CONCERT Thursday 4pm - 11pm - Slacky Flat Bar
A fast moving concert with 9 acts displaying just a bit of what’s to come over the three days ahead. Admission for non-season pass holders is just a $5 donation at the door. All door and raffle takings go to our two charities – Sandon Point Surf Club and Greenacres Disability Services The Bulli Show Society will provide a barbecue.
WELCOME TO COUNTRY Thursday 6.45pm - Slacky Flat Bar
Held at the Thursday Night concert, the welcome will be performed by local aboriginal elder, Vic Chapman. Vic was the first Aboriginal School Principal in NSW. He has a special affiliation with the Folk Festival through his late son John who for a number of years was a festival volunteer and attendee. Vic has presented our ‘Welcome to Country’ for the five previous festivals at Bulli.
ROBBIE BURNS A MUSICAL LIFE
BET YOU I CAN STOP GAMBLING
Nine Piece Celtic Band from Canberra, Humbug explore the life and times of the great Scottish Poet, Robbie Burns through his Music and Verse. The writer of ‘Auld Lang Syne” will come to life through the harmonies and magical music of the best thing to come out of Canberra since the Federal Highway.
An inveterate punter, a pokie player, and a parodyist; John Dengate would bet on anything. He’ll even bet you he can stop punting even though he reckons you should not bet on anything that has less than four legs. After he finishes this concert he’s working on one titled; “Buy me a beer and I’ll tell you how I gave up drinking”.
Friday 1.45pm - Show Pavilion
HONEY EATER’S GROVE
Friday 12-3pm, Saturday 4.30-7pm, Sunday 12-3.30pm
High on the hill in the Grevillea Park is the secretive Honey Eater Grove. Here, surrounded by New Holland Honeyeaters and the magical Eastern Spinebills you can commune with the Australian Bush. Of course there will be Sensitive New Age Drumming Sessions led by Elemental Grooves. It’s a BYO everything, but a great spot. Take your rhythm sticks, Festival Fans or just your percussive body and join in the primeval beat away from the hurley-burley of the poets and accordion players.
ALAN SCOTT MEMORIAL AUSTRALIAN CONCERT
Friday 2.45pm-11.30pm Grandstand Restaurant
Alan Scott was a great collector and interpreter of Australian traditional songs and was the first person invited to all our festivals until his untimely death. Each year we pull together some of his friends and those who are carrying on his traditions. If you are interested in our heritage this is a concert not to be missed.
This is the only Festival to hold this great gastronomic and musical event and there are some who would say that that is just as well. Bookings are essential for this three-course gourmet treat. Non-tripe eaters can join in for a plate of ‘Grey Sludge’. But dare be critical of this culinary delight and you will be fed ‘green sludge’- grey sludge that has been left in the sun for a day or two.
THE SHED FOR KIDS Friday 9.30am-5pm Saturday 9.30am-5pm Sunday 9.30am-5pm
The festival has always prided itself on its cultural children’s entertainment. There will be 31 sessions of music, dancing, storytelling, puppets, instrument making and fun.
WILD ABOUT HARRY
Friday 11.30am, Show Pavilion
Harry Robertson , though a Scotsman, was one of Australia’s finest songwriters, particularly about maritime matters. His songs, Norfolk Whalers, Ballina Whalers and The Wee Pot Stove have become classics and appear in the repertoire of many Australian folk singers. In the latter years of his life Harry spent his winters stopping with John Broomhall at his Northern Suburbs home. This is John’s tribute to Harry. 24
THE LAST BUSHRANGER music & drama
Saturday 11.15am-12.15, Show Pavilion
Jimmy Governor, an Aboriginal, was hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol at the age of 26 in 1901. He could well be Australia’s last Bushranger. Bob Campbell looks at Jimmy Governor’s life and background in story and song. It’s a glimpse of our attitudes, prejudices and lifestyle of a different (though maybe not so different) Australia. Bob is accompanied by actors Maurice Gaudry and Dave Warner.
DRONGOS, GALAHS AND DINGOS
Saturday 1.30pm-2.15pm, Show Pavilion
Roger Montgomery and John Angliss . . AKA ‘The Dingos Duo’ take you on a trip to meet some of the more insane and colourful members of the society of Oz Shane and Sharlene, Road Ragers and Speed Freaks, Stumpy & his Master, Wearily fleeing the Black Dog, Huge Beastly Willie, Overseer and psychopath, Scots Annie, Bag Lady and Casino Curser.
‘A UNION MAN’ - Film george mann Saturday 3.15pm-4.30pm
THE GREAT GUT-BUSTING TRIPE DINNER & CONCERT
Thursday 6.30pm, Concert from 8.15pm Grandstand Restaurant
Saturday 10.15am, Show Pavilion
THE CURSE OF THE BRETON FIDDLE
Friday 3.45pm - Show Pavilion
Every violinist to play the infamous and beautiful Breton Fiddle in the last two centuries has lost his life. Relive the captivating and far-reaching journey of this incredible 216-year-old cursed French Violin as it claims the lives of its owners, performer by performer, era by era.
YOUTH at the FOLKIE
Friday 5pm, Saturday 5pm, The Forum
20 of our finest young musicians, songwriters and singers will showcase their talents. Come along and hear the next musical generation.
A TRIBUTE TO DAVE – Poet’s Breakfast Saturday 8am, Show Pavilion
Dave Meyers has been the backbone of the Poetry at the Festival for many years. A shiny Bum Singer, a bush balladist, an MC, a Poet and a great reciter. All of us were shocked when he died suddenly in September this year. His friends in the Poetry scene will gather at Saturday’s Poet’s Breakfast to pay tribute to him.
26th Illawarra Folk Festival 13–16 January 2011
“A Union Man” is the story of the life of New York Union Legend, Julius Margolin through his eyes as well as those he’s met along the way. Featuring guest appearances by Utah Phillips, Faith Petric and former NMU Vice President Julius Margolin, Joe Stack, as well as concert performances, it’s an affectionate portrait of a rank-and-file activist still fighting for justice in his tenth decade on this planet.
PIAZZA ENTERTAINMENT The Piazza in the centre area is between the Main Marquee and The Forum and is surrounded by Stalls. There will be a number of music and street theatre acts there during festival.
Friday 6pm Circus WOW Saturday 7pm Circus WOW Saturday 8.30pm Circus WOW Sunday 12.15pm The Ladies (following The Tealeaves) Sunday 1.15pm Sacred Circus Sunday 2.15pm Mean Feet Brass Band Sunday 3.30pm Sacred Circus Sunday 4.30pm Ingleburn RSL Club & Campbelltown Community Pipes & Drums Sunday 5.45pm Chines Lion Dancers Southern Crane Kung Fu
participate MORRIS- A LIFE WITH BELLS ON - Film NSW Film Premiere!
Saturday 4:45pm-6:30pm, Sunday 7:45pm-9:30pm - Show Pavilion
Described as This is Spinal Tap meets Calendar Girls, the film follows the fortunes of an avant-garde Morris team in their struggle to push the boundaries of the venerable, ancient dance. Moving from the beauty of the Cotswolds to the sprawl of LA, this mockumentary uncovers the politics and ultra-competitive core lurking beneath this seemingly innocent pub pastime of hankywaving bearded men. The Black Joak Morris crew will be providing the warmup.
SUMMER FOLK SCHOOL Wednesday 9am-8pm, Thursday 9am-7pm
With 45 workshops the Folk Music School aims to increase awareness of folk music traditions and provide opportunities for musicians of all ages to build on their skills.

THE GREAT WOOLLY YARNS COMPETITION SUNDAY MORNING GOSPEL Sunday 8.30am,Nag’s Lounge
Emma Hannah will be hosting a mighty fine gospel sing to celebrate Sunday. Grab breakfast and get along to feel inspired and spiritual. If you love the Gospel Music of the 50s and 60s you’ll love this concert. Atheists welcome
STOP LAUGHING THIS IS SERIOUS
Sunday 10.15am-Midday, Show Pavilion
Stan Cross’s 1933 Smiths weekly cartoon set a trend for humour of a distinctive Australian Nature. In this concert some of our funniest performers carry on that tradition and show that Folk Music and Song is not always doom. You can catch some of our artists such as Martin Pearson, Eric Bogle, John Dengate, Pete Denahy, Roger & John from WA, and Nick Rheinberger being seriously funny. They will send you away with a smile on your face that will get you through the day - at least until the bar opens.
UNION CHOIRS CONCERT Sunday 12.15-1.15pm, Show Pavilion
The Union choirs will again feature at the festival as they have done for the past 17 years. With choirs from Newcastle, the Blue Mountains, Canberra, Sydney and our own local Illawarra Union Singers it promises to be one of the biggest line-ups ever.
ACOUSTIC WOMEN
Sunday 5pm-6pm, Nag’s Lounge
A journey into the music of some of the best women singers and songwriters of the 20th century with the and their friends. The show includes singer/ songwriter and acoustic guitarist Claire Roberts, singer/pianist, Jenna Hogan and singer/songwriter Belinda Harkness.
Finale & Parade
Saturday 12-1.30pm Grandstand Bar

THE GREAT LIMERICK COMP Sunday 12pm-1pm Grandstand Bar
Bring along your favourite limerick - anything goes. Write one yourself and win a prize for the best original composition. It’s a lot of fun and a quite old poetic form (an easy one too). Hosted by Brian Bell.
