Welcome to our Country

We are coming off the back of a bit of a fairly severe financial drubbing in 2017 but we are nothing, if not game. Sometimes the weather Gods are not friendly and we suspect that Festivals on the whole are suffering numbers downturns. Once again our hard working committee (you’ll see their names in the program) started work in mid-January 2017. Whereas there is an occasional rest for the wicked , there is no rest for volunteer folk festival organisers and they have been hard at it ever since. The result is the festival that you are going to experience between 18th and 21st January. It is with a great deal of sadness that I report that it has been a sad year for the Folk Community in general and the Illawarra Folk Club and Festival in particular. In February we lost one of Australias greatest bush poets, Col Wilson, aka ‘Blue the Shearer’. A member of our club and a great friend of the Illawarra. Blue appeared here many times. In fact his last appearance was in a concert in Shellharbour. He also appears on a number of our CDs and wrote most of our advertising jingles. Our Sunday Poets Breakfast will be a tribute to Blue. We also lost a life member and stalwart of the club Henry Roberts. Henry was a former treasurer and was particularly instrumental in ensuring that the club is in the strong financial position it is in today. Ted Hutton and Don Harkness, two club stalwarts of many years standing also departed during the year while Claudio Iacono a member of a number of bands in the club sadly went back to Italy, where he died after being diagnosed with Cancer. Shirley Smith, who at times stood in and did our Radio Programme and was always the first to put her hand up to MC and venue manage at our festivals was also a sad departure. We will be having an ‘Absent Friends’ concert as a tribute to these fine folkies. We still maintain that we are ‘The Biggest Little Festival in the world.’ We maintain our intimacy and involvement with our blackboards, sessions, poetry, folk school and spoken word. Our venues are relatively small so you are always up front and close and what you see is what you get. The programme - well it speaks for itself once again, but a couple of things are worthy of mention. This year the themed instrument is the ukelele, and once again we have a large contingent of overseas artists which truly puts the festival on the global map. The Green Music Train just keeps expanding and this year the musicians will be boarding a second train at Waterfall on Sunday. Over 800 people in 8 carriages spread over four trains and two days and each representing a different genre of music are expected to reach our festival in this very green way. It also helps with alleviating some of our parking problems and we are particularly appreciative of support we are given by NSW Trains and in particular by Thirroul Station Master, Michael Keelan. We would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters whose names and logos appear on all our promotion material and programmes. Without them we would be struggling to present the quality artistic event that is the Illawarra Folk Festival. Wollongong Council has also been a great and active supporter so it’s thanks to them. Finally we would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and organisers who give of their time unstintingly to ensure that this Festival not only remains “The Biggest Little Festival in The World” but also one of the best. Of course no introduction would be complete without thanking, Festival Artistic Director, David De Santi whose unbelievable energy, commitment and genius keeps the festival just “rolling along’. Also Neil Rowsell, our project manager who has managed to keep our diverse mob of organisers focused and enthusiastic. As I said this is our 33rd festival. Over the years many things have changed but two things haven’t the diversity and the quality and the fact that there is something for everyone. Enjoy the Festival, enjoy the music and enjoy this collection of rare talent and always remember when you come through the gates you are not just an audience; you are part of the whole event. Set in the spectacular northern Illawarra Escarpment in Bulli Showground the festival has 11 onsite venues and is a family friendly village. With superb music from 142 international, national and local artists there’s also a colourful array of international food stalls, craft stalls and the festival bar. The Illawarra region is diverse in its people, activities and culture. The Illawarra Folk Festival is a diverse and culturally enriching festival – now celebrating its 33rd year. This year’s festival features some of the all-time favourite performers from the last 32 years, along with

Project & Operations Director Hi everyone, Welcome to another Illawarra Folk Festival – the 33rd edition. Again, our programming committee has put together a great line-up of entertainment for our enjoyment. We’re proud that our festival is entirely run by volunteers, and a lot of volunteers are required. In fact, the number of volunteers needed for each festival now exceeds four hundred. It is fun to be a volunteer for the Illawarra Folk Festival in any capacity, and be part of a large team of people which puts together something very special. If you think you may be interested in volunteering for future festivals, please have a word to one of our volunteers wearing a blue vest at this festival. Let me extend a huge thank you to all our volunteers. Of course, we partner with a lot of organisations as well, and have a lot of sponsors. I thank all of them because, without them, it also wouldn’t be possible. One of our key partners is the greyhound club which races weekly here at Bulli Showground. Throughout the year, Darren Hull and his staff do a great job maintaining the enclosed grounds which form the main part of our festival area. The 2017 Festival Organising Committee is listed separately in this publication. These are the people who contribute a huge amount of volunteer hours in leadership roles both throughout the year and during the festival itself. They are all very passionate about our festival, and they deserve an enormous amount of praise and appreciation. Artistic Director When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground you enter a peaceful and musical global village where you can leave your everyday cares behind. You enter a world of inspiration, vision, colour, creativity, harmony and community spirit - a utopia we wish could last all year. To achieve this of course requires quite a huge team effort throughout the year, so thanks to a core of 40+ devoted volunteers organisers. This team then swells to 380 plus volunteers during the festival. Special mention is required to our incredibly hard working Steering Committee of Neil Rowsell, Rod & Judy Cork, Bruce & Robyn Jackson, Graeme Morrison, Peter Davis and the inimitable Russell Hannah. Thanks also to these amazing people who have made my festival organising life easier – Rod Cork (site setup management), Anne Proudlove (artist’s liaison), Gail Norris (Facebook), Lana Patrin (website), Suzi Wakefield (artists accommodation), Nick Hartegerink (media), Ann Lehmann (Folk School), Lilli Pang (youth), Stephen O’Keeffe (production), Kevin Donegan (artists tents), Shane Moon (festival shop/ merchandise), Graeme Morrison (programming/CD compilation), Claire Roberts (raffle), Annie Cantle (sponsorship) and Robyn & Bruce Jackson (ticketing). With a large financial loss last festival, the festival has been scaled back but there are still over 450 individual performances by 142 acts from all over the world, Australian and the Illawarra region. I’m proud that we continue to support youth folk with the return of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra, Youth Traditions Awards, Folk School and the Youth concerts. It’s great they are getting a grounding and exposure to folk music. Please take note also the shout out (later in this program book) for new talent to help with the survival of the Illawarra Folk Festival. I hope you will enjoy our 33rd outing. Camping Rules & Information

There is limited camping available on site. Access to the camping grounds is from 8am Thursday morning and you will not be able to camp before then. You can only register for camping when the camping office is open. Your festival wristband must be worn at all times. All children must also have a wristband as well. • Children and youth (U18) who are camping must be with a responsible camping parent. • Entry to campsite area is for festival ticketed campers only. • There is to be a maximum of 6 persons per campsite • RV camping sites will be allocated by the type and size, ie caravan, motorhome, vans. • Specific sites cannot be allocated or reserved for others, however groups are able to pre-book and pay for sites through the ticket office. Do not light any campfires. • There is to be a minimum of 2.5 metres between tents. Only one vehicle is able to be parked within the campsite area. Additional vehicles will need to be parked in the nominated car parking areas. • No parking is allowed next to tents at Slacky Heights (near Grevillea Park) and cars must be parked beside the road or in the festival car park. • Recycle all waste. Bins are marked as recycling / compostable and general waste. • Do not leave any valuables in cars or tents. • The use of generators is only permitted by motorhomes or caravans camping in the Wanderers Camp or Middle Earth areas between 8am and 8pm to recharge ‘house batteries’ and at the discretion of management. • Be courteous of your neighbours at night and keep noise to a minimum. All late night sessions should be inside the Grandstand Bar and Restaurant. • Make sure that all your camping equipment stays within your allocated space. • Unruly behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in your removal from the site. Twenty four hour security is on hand to ensure the safety and amenity of all campers.

Showers

There are limited hot-water showers so please conserve water and keep your showers short. There are hot showers for women and men under the grandstand. There are also some showers in the small toilet block near the entry to the main festival site.

Festival Bars Slacky Flat Bar

The festival organises its own bars and the proceeds help keep festival pass prices down. Please patronise it but do drink sensibly. The bar is conducted strictly according to licensing regulations, ie underage and intoxicated persons will not be served and no alcohol is to be taken inside or outside licensed areas. There are selections of Coopers beer and cider, wine and soft drinks available.

Festival Volunteers

The festival runs entirely on volunteers who appreciate a helping hand and the odd thank you. If you can also volunteer a few hours of work then please see the Festival Office staff.

Children and Youth

The festival aims to provide a safe environment for families. Parents and guardians are responsible for their children (U18) at all times. The Shed, in the centre of the showground, is the kids’ entertainment venue and not a child-minding facility so carers and parents are asked to stay with their young children.

Visitor Surveys

A survey is being conducted. The information gathered is confidential and is used to improve future festivals and assess the quality and impact of the festival on the community. We sincerely appreciate your assistance by completing them.

A noise curfew will apply to all camping areas after 10pm. Anyone wishing to party on can go to the Grandstand Bar area inside the Grandstand Building. Please keep all sessions inside the building. Please be courteous of other campers and festival neighbours.

Smoke-free Festival

The Illawarra Folk Festival is a smoke-free festival. Smoking in any form including e-cigarettes/vapour is not permitted anywhere on the festival site. There is no smoking in camping areas. However, we have some Yes Butt zones, where smokers can feel free to smoke. We have made some changes, so please look for the Yes Butt banners and butt trays..

There is plenty of free parking inside the showground. Please avoid parking in the surrounding streets. Exit from the site onto Princes Highway is a left turn only. See map below.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS 2018 Community Partners:

The Illawarra Folk Festival is a major community event which has generated more than $110,000 for charities over the past 16 years and we want to do more. The festival is powered by a group of hard-working volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk who believe in giving back to the community. Since 2001, beginning with the major Diageo/ Guinness sponsorship, the festival has supported over 55 organisations including the headspace Wollongong, the Waniora Public School, Bulli Mens Shed, Disability Trust, Rotary Clubs of Wollongong, Cystic Fibrosis NSW, The Denny Foundation, NSW Cancer Council, APHEDA, refugee support group SCARF, the Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, the Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church, East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres Disability Services, Scouts groups, the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and the South Coast School for Children with Autism. Over the past nine years in Bulli, through its charity bush dances, festival opening concerts and donations, the festival has given more than $45,000 in cash to the recipient charities. We continue to seek further partnerships with community and charity organisations as well to bolster our volunteer ranks. There are

Thursday Charity Partners Since 2001 the Illawarra Folk Festival has provided charity / non-profit organisations the opportunity to receive the benefits of the official opening day, Thursday. This is achieved by the sharing of the entry cost to the festival for Thursday and the proceeds of a raffle to our two nominated charities. It’s a great opportunity for folks who’ve not tasted the joy of a folk festival to get a sample for a mere $30 while supporting two worthwhile charities.

Our 2017 charities are Need a Feed and Bulli Surf Life Saving Club.

Need a Feed The vision at Need a Feed is to not only feed hundreds, but millions of families in times of need throughout Australia. Need a Feed supports local families in times of need in a variety of ways, from providing food to personal care items and school supplies. As well as emergency food relief service, they hold events throughout the year, supplying food to hundreds of

people on any one day via a ‘host’ organisation. They have been able to rescue food that would have otherwise gone to landfill, and pass it on to. various neighbourhood centres and organisations for their community lunches.The organisation came about with the vision of Shaz Harrison-Shaw, who was herself struggling to put food on the table. She has since made it her mission to support families in the same position as she was. To date Need a Feed has supported more than 7,500 families and distributed more than 55 tonnes of food! www.needafeed.org

Bulli Surf Life Saving Club The Bulli Life Saving Club has been protecting beachgoers for over 104 years. They are steeped in tradition, mate-ship and memories that last a lifetime and have a ‘no lives lost’ record due to the diligence of the members patrolling Bulli Beach. They continue to provide a voluntary role in protecting the community along Bulli Beach. They welcome any new members to their family orientated club. A GREENER FESTIVAL Waste Reduction The Illawarra Folk Festival is committed to minimising waste and its impact on the environment by: §§ Composting all food scraps and cups, plates, cutlery, food and drink containers sold by stalls §§ Recycling of plastics, glass and clean cardboard.

§§ Allowing BYO reusable water bottles and coffee cups. §§ Saying no to plastic bags and single use water bottles

Our aim is to send no waste to landfill. A big task requiring attendees, campers, volunteers, stallholders and performers to work together. There are 3 waste streams at the festival. Each waste stream has an individual collection bin identified by the bin lid colour and signage.

The Illawarra Folk Festival is in its 33rd year... It's a community based (non-profit) and organised effort arranged by the Illawarra Folk Club. Our festival is loved in so many ways by artists, patrons and volunteers. It takes a huge amount of volunteer effort to make it happen. During the course of the year over 30 team leaders dedicate many hours to coordinate and manage their tasks. These people are at the heart of our volunteer community. But for the festival to continue there needs to be new people to become Team Leaders. Youth at the Folkie

The Shed venue will host the Youth at the Folkie concerts, Young Traditions Awards and young childrens’ program. Youth are encouraged to join the third run of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra. Rehearsals from Wednesday with the final performance and Sunday. The Youth Traditions Awards concerts return to encourage young folk to play traditional folk music. There are cash prizes to be won, thanks to Bulli Medical Practice, Judith Stubbs & Associates and Wongawilli Colonial Dance Club.

Dance Zones

Dance zones have been created at the sides of the Black Diamond Marquee, Slacky Flat Bar and Show Pavilion. Look for the signs and markings and feel to free to dance without blocking the view of seated patrons. Please do not relocate positioned chairs from venues. In addition to the concerts there are a number of special events throughout the festival. Here’s a snapshot of some of them.

THE UKULELE 2018 Theme Instrument

2018 is the year of the ukulele at the Illawarra Folk Festival! Here’s a a brief history of the humble ukulele (from: https://ukuguides.com/information/ very-brief-history-of-the-ukulele). By the 18th Century, Europe already had a long history with stringed, fretted instruments. Larger instruments such as guitars and lutes had developed smaller cousins to benefit seafaring musicians. In Portugal the guitar had shrunk down to became a machete (machete de braga), retaining the figure of 8 shape despite the size making it redundant. In 1879 the Ravenscrag set off for Hawaii with four Portuguese cabinet makers on board. The market for large, ornate Portguese furniture amongst Hawaii’s largely poor and agrarian population presumably not being large enough to support them all, the four started to make instruments. The one

that took hold was the machete in a new form - the ukulele. It became a big hit with the Hawaiian Royal Family and Hawaiians in general, that it became firmly established as their instrument by the start of the 20th Century. After the US’s annexation of Hawaii, the new owners were keen to sell it on to mainland America as a dream tropical island. Their big push was the Panama Pacific international Exposition in 1915. Their show included plenty of ukulele music and featured the ukuleles of Jonnah Kumalae. It sparked the original ukulele boom in the 1920’s among people dreaming of a mythical island getaway. Inevitably, the ukulele started to move away from purely a Hawaiian novelty and became such a part of music making that by the start of the 1930’s most piano scores featured ukulele chord diagrams. Thanks to Ukulele Ike, the uke’s image turned almost 180 degrees to become associated with smoky bars, trilbies and jazzy songs. When Wall Street collapsed in 1928 the economy and the uke’s popularity in the US took a big dive. The booming consumer economy of 1950’s US, saw mass produced plastic goods flooding shops. The ukulele was a prime instrument for mass selling to kids and jazz guitar manufacturer - Maccaferri - jumped on the opportunity with their ranges of plastic ukes. This was bolstered by the use of the ukulele by huge TV star Arthur Godfrey and the second ukulele boom came into being. The rather less aspirational figure of Tiny Tim was the soundtrack to the uke’s crashing popularity in the 1960’s and 1970’s. For most of the 1990’s, the alternative music scene was dominated by traditional guitar bands and, as a reaction to this, the first decade of the 2000’s saw a growing acoustic alternative scene start to emerge, using more eclectic sounds and more unusual instrumentation. The ukulele found its place in this sound with bands like ‘The Magnetic Fields’. Two huge trends that helped bring the ukulele back to popularity, were the proliferation of the internet and the huge increase in imports from China and the East. The internet has put ukulele music in front of people and has created a groundswell growth of people being inspired to pick up the instrument by others like themselves who are just playing for their own enjoyment. You’ll see the ukulele in a number of acts at the festival! Here are some of the special events.

Held at the Thursday Night concert, the welcome to Dharawal country has been performed since the Festival moved to Bulli by local Aboriginal elder, Vic Chapman. Vic was the first Aboriginal School Principal in NSW. He has a special affiliation with the Folk Festival through his late son John who for a number of years was a festival volunteer and attendee. The Great GutBusting Tripe Dinner & Concert

This is the only Festival in the world to hold this great gastronomic and musical event and there are some who would say that that is just as well. Bookings are essential for this three–course gourmet treat. Non–tripe eaters can join in for a plate of ‘Grey Sludge’ as well as the other two courses. But dare be critical of this culinary delight and you will be fed ‘green sludge’– grey sludge that has been left in the sun for a day or two.

This workshop is a collection of songs and poems about horses – the friends and work companions of man over the ages. Some are collected, some are written by John and Robin from The Ten Quid Poms in the last few years. FRI 11:00am–12:00pm Grandstand Bar

Youth Traditions Awards (and Cash Thursday Charity Day Prizes!) Since 2001 the Illawarra Folk Festival has provided charity / non-profit organisations the opportunity to receive the benefits of the official opening day, Thursday, of the Illawarra Folk Festival. This is achieved by the sharing of the entry cost to the festival on Thursday and the proceeds of a raffle to our two nominated charities. It’s a great opportunity for folks who’ve not tasted the joy of a folk festival to get a sample for a mere $30 while supporting worthwhile charities. Our 2018 charities are Need a Feed and Bulli Surf Life Saving Club.

The 2018 Illawarra Folk Festival will the feature the fifth Youth Traditions Awards to encourage and celebrate young artists who perform traditional folk songs and tunes. Young artists will aged between 9 and 25 will be have the chance to perform in the Youth Traditions Award concerts at the festival. Irish Famine – A Story in Music

1845 and lasting for six years, the potato famine killed over a million men, women children in Ireland and caused another million to flee. The British sent almost 4,000 vessels carrying food from Ireland to England during 1847, when 400,000 Irish men, women and children died of starvation. Absent Friends Tribute Concert

This year we lost a life member and stalwart of the Illawarra Folk Club Henry Roberts. Henry was a former treasurer and was particularly instrumental in ensuring that the club is in the strong financial position it is in today. Ted Hutton and Don Harkness, two more Illawarra Folk Club stalwarts of many years standing also departed during the year while Claudio Iacono a member of a number of local bands in the Club sadly went back to Italy, where he died after being diagnosed with cancer. In this concert we pay tribute to them. Shirley Smith, who at times stood in and did our Radio Programme and was always the first to put her hand up to MC and venue manage at our festivals was also a sad departure. Choir One Minute Wonders Festival Join the Festival Choir and perform at the Festival Blue the Shearer Tribute

On February 3rd this year the Illawarra Folk Club and Festival lost one of its best, Blue the Shearer (aka Col Wilson). Do we have to say anything about Blue. Like Banjo Paterson, Henry, Adam Lindsay, and Henry Kendall his poems will outlive him. Every week he sent the ABC ratings soaring by reciting his weekly verse on air. He was the scourge of politicians whom he dissected with merciless satire, he commented upon the foibles of our lifestyle and no subject was too trivial to escape the cutting edge of the incisive Blue mind. From fitted sheets to chainsaw massacres, from grandkids to macho men, Blue was in there, making sure that these important things in our lives were never swept under the carpet. Best of all Blue has been down in the Illawarra so often that he regarded himself as a local. He is also the official ‘pote’ of the Tripe Eaters. Here’s Blue in a contemplative mood with his famous hat. Hoot Jams

The Hoot Band is a pick–up band, playing traditional New Orleans second line brass band music, surprising covers and a few of Ken’s original compositions. It is open to all interested brass band musicians.

HITCH-HIKER’S GUIDE This may be your first folk festival, so here are some ideas about how to enjoy this year’s party. •

Buy your pass online to save you money and time.

Make sure you pack summer clothes, colourful Mardi Gras style clothing, an umbrella for quick rain-showers, a refillable water bottle and lots of good cheer. Don’t worry if you haven’t brought anything to wear - get yourself a cheap costume from the Scraggs shop in the Slacky Flat Bar.

If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main Bulli Showground Gate on Grevillea Park Road entry gate and head for the Festival Office.

Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with season passes.

If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway onto Grevillea Park Road and then to the main entry gate at Bulli Showground.

Make sure you get a full program when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your guide to the venues, performers and lots of general information.

Once you’ve parked the car, head for the Global Green, Piazza, Honey Eater’s Lounge or the Festival Bar in the main complex building, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program.

ILLAWARRA FOLK CLUB & ILLAWARRA FOLK FESTIVAL The Illawarra Folk Club was formed in 1979 and has conducted fortnightly concerts on and off in the Wollongong/Illawarra region ever since. Since 1985 the Club has presented the Illawarra Folk Festival 20 times in the village of Jamberoo and 11 times in Bulli. The festival has grown from a humble beginning to being recognised as one of Australia’s premiere folk festivals and the biggest in NSW. The Illawarra Folk Club is a community based incorporated association dedicated to the preservation, performance and presentation of folklore in all its various forms. The members include many local folk musicians, dancers, poets and storytellers. The Club holds regular concerts and events at venues around the Illawarra area. The Festival is a sub-committee of the Folk Club with around 40 members. It meets once month during the year and more often as the festival approaches. is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. However, you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing, shanty singers or impromptu sessions.

Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind. Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site. You’ll discover great music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see, move onto another venue.

If all this fails, head for the Festival Bar, the Global Green or the Piazza. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to see and hear. Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the three venues there - The Chapel and Miners Camp. At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians are always up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions. Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow revellers when leaving.

THE VENUES

On Slacky Flat There are 9 venues on ‘Slacky Flat’. This area of Bulli was a former mine worker’s camp and then the subsequent showground site.

Black Diamond Marquee Concerts

This is the main festival concert space set in the middle of the Showground Racing Track. It will feature all the major concerts from Friday to Sunday evening and the Festival Finale.

Global Green Concerts

The Global Green Stage is a Pavilion Tent over a large, specially constructed wooden floor. The stage will be surrounded by food and market stalls to create a ‘piazza’ environment.

Grandstand Bar

Sessions and Concerts

This is on the ground floor of the Grandstand building and is adjacent to the Slacky Flat Bar. It hosts sessions from early to late and a number of concert and spoken word events.

Grandstand Restaurant Concerts

This is upstairs in the Grandstand building and is used from Thursday to Saturday evening. There will be concerts, workshops and Folk Club type concerts. It is also the venue for the world famous Tripe Dinner.

Nags’ Lounge Concerts

The southern part of the former Horse Stables will be converted into an intimate concert venue.

The Shed

Kids Festival, Youth

Children are entertained in this area from Friday to Sunday during daylight hours. Youth folk concerts are held on Friday and Saturday evenings. Sunday afternoon will include a feature concert.

Show Pavilion

Concerts, Workshops

This is a building behind the Grandstand and can seat up to 150 persons. It will be used from Thursday to Sunday evening. It is the venue for the Poets Breakfast events.

Slacky Flat Bar Concerts

A building under the Grandstand that can seat up to 500 persons. It forms part of the Festival Bar area. It is used on Thursday evening for the Opening Charity Concert and then from Friday evening to Sunday evening. The Bar stocks a number of Coopers Beers, wines, cider and soft drinks.

Tivoli on Track Concerts / Dance

This venue is on the former harness racing track and is a Pavilion Tent placed over a large, specially constructed wooden floor. It will feature concerts, dances, dance demonstrations, dance workshops and other outdoor entertainment.

In the Grevillea Park

There are 2 venues in the beautiful Grevillea Park above Slacky Flat. You can catch a courtesy bus from the Show Pavilion or walk up the path.

The Chapel Concerts

The Chapel venue is a Pavilion venue situated in a natural environment in the park. It is adjacent to a small chapel building that used to be in the village of Sherbrooke on Bulli Mountain.

The Miners’ Camp Concerts

An intimate venue at the Grevillea Park Gates area. Bulli is renowned for its mining heritage, hence the name.

Youth Traditions

The Water Runners

Folk Coming in 2018 The Illawarra Folk Club hosts a number of concerts during the year featuring local, national and touring international artists. There are usually 2 to 3 acts per event. They are generally held on the 1st Fridays and 3rd Saturdays of the month from February to November. If you are member of the Illawarra Folk Club you usually get a $5 discount on the entry price so it’s well worth joining!
