Welcome to number 35 The Emerald (Green) Festival

Kermit the Frog once remarked that it wasn’t easy being green and given the attitude of some of our politicians he was most probably right. Here at the Illawarra Folk Festival we are into our 35th Festival, which is of course the emerald celebration, which is of course, ‘green’. As a community organisation we have felt that we should lead the way in environmental responsibility. Starting with the Green Music Train many years ago we have gradually added to our credentials. In the field of waste reduction all food scraps and cups, plates, cutlery, food and drink containers sold by stalls must be compostable or recyclable. Plastics, glass and clean cardboard are recycled, and we encourage BYO reusable water bottles and coffee cups. Saying no to plastic bags and single use water bottles is a high priority. Our aim is to send no waste to landfill. A big task requiring attendees, campers, volunteers, stallholders and performers to work together. But we know folkies and we know that they are up to the task. Here’s a new innovation - for your use our Green T shirted Folk are supplying compostable bags made from corn for your food scraps and organic matter during the festival. These can go in the green bins. Finally of course we have discarded the unrecyclable plastic beer mugs and sell cans. These are recycled daily by St Vinnies who collect them. So every time you have a canned beer or soft drink and place your uncrushed can in the appropriate bin (when it’s empty of course-) then you are helping some homeless person. We are coming off the back of a bit of a fairly severe financial drubbing again in 2019 but we are nothing, if not game. Sometimes the weather Gods are not friendly and we suspect that Festivals on the whole are suffering numbers downturns as wages growth stalls and people tighten belts. Once again our hard working committee (you’ll see their names in the program) started work in mid-January 2019. Whereas there is an occasional rest for the wicked , there is no rest for folk festival volunteer organisers and they have been hard at it ever since. The result is the festival that you are going to experience between 16th and 19th January 2020. We still maintain that we are ‘The Biggest Little Festival in the World.’ We maintain our intimacy and involvement with our blackboards, sessions, poetry, folk school and spoken word. Our venues are relatively small so you are always up front and close and what you see is what you get. The program - well it speaks for itself, but a couple of things are worthy of mention. Once again we have a large contingent of overseas artists - so you can save yourself the airfares of having to travel to see them. We have a bigger youth program now called Fresh Faces and we welcome back our old mate, Eric Bogle who first surfaced at our Festival 33 years ago, not bad for a bloke who claims to be only 40. Once again we have a lot of sessions that will involve people who want to learn more. The Green Music Train just keeps expanding. Once again we will have four trains that musicians from the festival will be boarding at Waterfall. There is over 800 people in 8 carriages spread over four trains and two days and each represents this very green idea of getting here. It also helps with alleviating some of our parking problems and we are particularly appreciative of support we are given by NSW Trains and in particular by Thirroul Station Master, Michael Keelan. We would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters whose names and logos appear on all our promotion material and program. Without them we would be struggling to present the quality artistic event that is the Illawarra Folk Festival. Wollongong Council has also been a great and active supporter so it’s thanks to them. Finally, we would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and organisers who give of their time unstintingly to ensure that this Festival, not only remains “The Biggest Little Festival in The World” but also one of the best. Of course no introduction would be complete without thanking, Festival Artistic Director, David De Santi whose unbelievable energy, commitment and genius keeps the festival just “rolling along’. Also Neil Rowsell, our project manager who has managed to keep our diverse mob of organisers focused and enthusiastic. As I said this is our 35th festival. Over the years many things have changed but two things haven’t - the diversity and the quality and the fact that there is something for everyone. Enjoy the Festival, enjoy the music and enjoy this collection of rare talent and always remember when you come through the gates you are not just an audience; you are part of the whole event. Happy folking in January 2020

Welcome to our Country We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where Aboriginal people have performed age-old customs, ceremonies of storytelling, dance, music and celebration. We acknowledge and pay our respect to Elders past and present. And we look to those of the future, for they hold the memories, traditions and hopes of indigenous Australia. They are also an integral part of the Dreaming for a truly united and reconciled Australia. Joyce Donovan, Aboriginal Elder

MESSAGES Lord Mayor, City of Wollongong This year the lllawarra Folk Festival celebrates 35 years of bringing live music to the lllawarra. It's an annual highlight for music fans from across the country who converge on Bulli Showground, beneath the spectacular northern lllawarra Escarpment, to experience wonderful music in a very special setting. I would like to welcome everyone that is visiting the Illawarra for this year's festival. This is one of the largest volunteer run music festivals in Australia and I congratulate the organisers, volunteers, artists, and loyal festival goers who make this such a great event. I am sure you will enjoy the vibrant, collective energy and community atmosphere that you help to create. Cr Gordon Bradbery OAM Wollongong City Lord Mayor

Project & Operations Director Hi everyone, Welcome to another Illawarra Folk Festival – our 35th edition. Again, our programming committee has put together a great line-up of entertainment for our enjoyment. We’re proud that our festival is entirely run by volunteers, and a lot of volunteers are required. In fact, the number of volunteers needed for each festival now numbers about four hundred. Thanks go to all our volunteers for this festival. It is fun to be a volunteer for the Illawarra Folk Festival in any capacity, and be part of a large team of people which puts together something very special. If you think you may be interested in volunteering for future festivals, please have a word to one of our volunteers wearing a blue vest at this festival. Of course, we partner with a lot of organisations as well, and have a lot of sponsors. I thank all of them because, without them, it also wouldn’t be possible. One of our key partners is the greyhound club which races weekly here at Bulli Showground. Throughout the year, Darren Hull and his staff do a great job maintaining the enclosed grounds which form the main part of our festival area. The 2020 Festival Organising Committee is listed separately in this publication. These are the people who contribute a huge amount of volunteer hours in leadership roles both throughout the year and during the festival itself. They are all very passionate about our festival, and they deserve an enormous amount of praise and appreciation. Let’s all enjoy the festival, and hope that we are blessed with good weather throughout. Neil Rowsell Operations and Project Director (Honorary), Illawarra Folk Festival

Premier of NSW It is my great pleasure to welcome all guests and performers to the 35th Illawarra Folk Festival. This year's program is filled with talented local, national and international acts performing more than 400 concerts across four days. There is something for all ages at this family friendly event including different folk music sub-genres as well as poetry recitals, comedy shows and dance performances. The Illawarra Folk Festival is one of New South Wales' oldest and most loved music festivals. Whether you are here for one session, or the whole four days, the stunning Illawarra location and memorable performances allow you to truly enjoy the moment. Thank you to the organisers of the Illawarra Folk Festival. Year after year you create a program to intrigue and excite folk fans in Australia and around the world. I hope the 35th Illawarra Folk Festival is safe and enjoyable, and the best edition yet. Gladys Berejiklian MP Premier

Artistic Director

When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground you enter a peaceful and musical global village where you can leave your everyday cares behind. You enter a world of inspiration, vision, colour, creativity, harmony and community spirit - a utopia we wish could last all year. To achieve this of course requires quite a huge team effort and thanks to a core of about 40 devoted volunteers, which swells to 350 plus, the 35th anniversary Illawarra Folk Festival will be another great celebration.

Special mention is required for the incredibly hardworking Steering Committee of Neil Rowsell, Judy and Rod Cork, Robyn and Bruce Jackson, Graeme Morrison, Peter Davis, Suzi Wakefield and the inimitable Russell Hannah who sadly cannot attend this celebration. We’re proud to continue to support youth folk with Fresh Folk concerts, Blackboard sessions, showcase and the return of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra performing with special guests. It’s a great way for young folk musicians from all over the country to share and play folk music. We’re also continuing the Youth Tradition Awards and the wonderful Folk School, curated by Ann Lehmann, to nurture and develop our young performers. All this is part of the monster cultural event the festival has become. Here’s a few statistics – 155 acts from all over the world and Australia with 70 of them local, around 700 performers, 480 concerts / dances / sessions / workshops and 11 venues! Despite the scale of the festival we still manage to have ways to participate for all – playing music, singing, dancing, reciting, telling yarns and socialising! On this occasion of the 35th festival and my 25th as Artistic Director it is opportune to contemplate the development of the festival from its humble beginnings in the village of Jamberoo and the thousands of hours spent to achieve the success of the festival now. It's crazy, but it always seems so worthwhile seeing, hearing and enjoying the unique musical and artistic gatherings we have created. So bow your fiddles, pluck your banjos, strum your guitars, blow your trumpets, bang your drum, holler a shanty, squeeze your accordion, dance a tarantella or jig and enjoy our 35th 'Emerald' Illawarra Folk Festival. David De Santi Artistic Director and Minister for Many Other Things

HITCH-HIKER’S GUIDE This may be your first folk festival, so here are some ideas about how to enjoy this year’s party. • Buy your pass online to save you money and time.

• Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with season passes.

• Make sure you pack summer clothes, colourful festival style clothing, an umbrella for quick rain-showers, a refillable water bottle and lots of good cheer.

• If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway onto Grevillea Park Road and then to the main entry gate at Bulli Showground.

• If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main Bulli Showground Gate on Grevillea Park Road entry gate and head for the Festival Office.

• Make sure you get a full program when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your guide to the venues, performers and lots of general information.

• Once you’ve parked the car, head for the Global Green, Piazza or the Festival Bar in the main complex building, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program.

• There are 11 venues to choose from. You can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck. Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. However, you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing, shanty singers or impromptu sessions. • Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind. Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site. You’ll discover great music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see, move onto another venue.

• If all this fails, head for the Festival Bar, the Global Green or the Piazza. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to see and hear. • Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the two venues there - The Chapel and The Conservatory (former Miner's Camp).

• At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians are always up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions. • Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow revellers when leaving.

ILLAWARRA FOLK CLUB AND ILLAWARRA FOLK FESTIVAL The Illawarra Folk Club was formed in 1979 and has conducted fortnightly concerts on and off in the Wollongong/Illawarra region ever since. Since 1985 the Club has presented the Illawarra Folk Festival 20 times in the village of Jamberoo and 15 times in Bulli. The festival has grown from a humble beginning to being recognised as one of Australia’s premiere folk festivals and the biggest in NSW.

The Illawarra Folk Club is a community based incorporated association dedicated to the preservation, performance and presentation of folklore in all its various forms. The members include many local folk musicians, dancers, poets and storytellers. The Club holds regular concerts and events at venues around the Illawarra area. The Festival is a sub-committee of the Folk Club with around 40 members. It meets once month during the year and more often as the festival approaches. If you are interested in helping with the Folk Club or Festival then contact us by calling 1300 887 034 or email info@illawarrafolkclub.org.au

The Club has provided support to a number of local artist members who have produced recordings. It has also assisted in providing folk performers to many community and charity events in the Illawarra. You can join the Club and receive discounts to the regular concerts. Folk Club membership forms are available from the website and the Festival Reception. www.illawarrafolkclub.org.au www.illawarrafolkfestival.com.au

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS The Illawarra Folk Festival is a major community event which has generated more than $120,000 for charities over the past 18 years and we want to do more. The festival is powered by a group of hardworking volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk who believe in giving back to the community Since 2001, beginning with a major Diageo/ Guinness community sponsorship, the festival has supported over 63 organisations including more recently Motor Neurone Disease Association of New South Wales, Need A Feed, Bulli Surf Life Saving Club, headspace Wollongong, the Waniora Public School, Bulli Mens Shed, Disability Trust, Rotary Clubs of Wollongong, Cystic Fibrosis NSW, The Denny Foundation, NSW Cancer Council, APHEDA, refugee support group SCARF, the Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, the Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church, East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres Disability Services, Scouts groups, the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and the South Coast School for Children with Autism.

Thursday Charity Partners

Since 2001 the Illawarra Folk Festival has provided charity / non-profit organisations the opportunity to receive the benefits of the official opening day, Thursday. This is achieved by the sharing of the entry cost to the festival for Thursday and the proceeds of a raffle to our two nominated charities. It’s a great opportunity for folks who’ve not tasted the joy of a folk festival to get a sample for a mere $30 while supporting two worthwhile charities. Our 2020 charity is Hidden Harvest.

Over the past fourteen years in Bulli, through its charity bush dances, festival opening concerts and donations, the festival has given more than $50,000 in cash to the recipient charities. We continue to seek further partnerships with community and charity organisations as well to bolster our volunteer ranks. There are financial and social benefits for these organisations to be involved. So, if you are interested in helping us keep this great festival alive, then please contact us at: info@illawarrafolkclub.org.au or phone 1300 887 034.

A GREENER FESTIVAL Waste Reduction The Illawarra Folk Festival is committed to minimising waste and its impact on the environment by: §§ Composting all food scraps and cups, plates, cutlery, food and drink containers sold by stalls §§ Recycling of plastics, glass and clean cardboard.

§§ Allowing BYO reusable water bottles and coffee cups. §§ Saying no to plastic bags and single use water bottles

Our aim is to send no waste to landfill. A big task requiring attendees, campers, volunteers, stallholders and performers to work together. There are 3 waste streams at the festival. Each waste stream has an individual collection bin identified by the bin lid colour and signage.

Bar cups go in the Green bins

Compostable Bags For your use our Green T shirted Folk are supplying compostable bags made from corn for your food scraps and organic matter during the festival. These can go in the green bins. Please handle these carefully as they are not as strong as ordinary bags. You can also wrap food scraps etc in paper for disposal or simply tip them unwrapped into the bins. DO NOT PUT ANY PLASTIC BAGS OR PLASTIC LIDS ETC IN THE GREEN BINS. Thank you from the Green Folk and have a great festival!

Drink Container Recycling The St Vincent de Paul Society assists our recycling effort by providing dedicated blue Vinnies bins for the collection and removal of beer/soft drink cans and plastic/glass bottles enthusiastically emptied by our patrons during the festival. This is a win-win as we’re able to divert recyclable waste from landfill and local Vinnies programs and services benefit from the container refunds. Look out for a blue bin when discarding your Return and Earn eligible drink containers.

FESTIVAL FEATURES In addition to the performer concerts there are a number of special events throughout the festival. Here’s a snapshot of some of them.

Thursday Charity Day

Since 2001 the Illawarra Folk Festival has provided charity / non–profit organisations the opportunity to receive the benefits of the official opening day, Thursday, of the Illawarra Folk Festival. This is achieved by the sharing of the entry cost to the festival on Thursday and the proceeds of a raffle to our two nominated charities. It’s a great opportunity for folks who’ve not tasted the joy of a folk festival to get a sample for a mere $15 while supporting worthwhile charities. Our 2020 charity is Hidden Harvest. Hidden Harvest is a non–for–profit initiative that raises awareness about food waste and its related environmental and social problems.

Welcome to Country

Held at the Thursday Night concert, the welcome to country will be presented by Wodi Wodi elder Joyce Donovan. THU 6.30pm Slacky Flat Bar

Tripe Italian Style Dinner & Concert

This is the only Festival in the world to hold this great gastronomic and musical event and there are some who would say that that is just as well. Bookings are essential for this three–course gourmet treat. Non–tripe eaters can join in for a plate of ‘Grey Sludge’ as well as the other two courses. But dare be critical of this culinary delight and you will be fed ‘green sludge’– grey sludge that has been left in the sun for a day or two. Positions at this great epicurian, gourmet event are strictly limited so please book on–line early to avoid disappointment. Guest tripe eaters who will sing for their supper this year are: The Pie Eaters, Chloe & Jason Roweth, Hui Tocker and Peter Hicks, Derek Dowding, Graeme Fletcher and Collister Fix. THU 7pm Restaurant (music starts at 8pm)

John & Dale Dengate Mug for Parody

FRI 10–11am Ken Field’s Hoot Band This is the sixth John and Dale Dengate Mug. The Global Green Hoot Jam late John Dengate was one of the finest exponents of parody in the country – so much so that often when folks heard traditional tunes they’d remark that whoever wrote that pinched John Dengate’s tune. The John and Dale Dengate Mug (it’s not a cup) will be awarded to the pest parody, or performance of one, at the concert. John’s wife Dale will be there to judge and present it. The best part, however, is the winner will be presented with a replica which can be refilled by our friendly bar staff for free for the rest of the festival. It doesn’t have to be a song, it can also be a poem. Just bring your parody and enter on the day. It doesn’t even have to be original.
