Welcome to number 34 When you reach the ripe old age of 34 years you would reckon you should know what you’re doing.
Well we’ve been doing this for so many years that you’d have to think we’ve got this whole Festival thing under control. But just when you think you’ve got it mastered, things change. In this case it is changes to Government rules and regulations which have made it very difficult for volunteer organisations to put on community events.
Still thanks to long days of trying to meet what are often seen as unreasonable conditions, where the individual nature of each festival is not taken into account, our hard working volunteers, notably our site manager, Rod Cork, have managed to stay alive and present Festival No 34.
The essential nature of the Festival has not changed however. The quality of the acts remains high in every department. We maintain our intimacy and involvement with our blackboards, sessions, poetry and spoken word. Our venues are relatively small so you are always up front and close and what you see is what you get. The program speaks for itself. Perhaps a couple of things to mention. Our concert Life Begins at Forty celebrates 40 years of the Illawarra Folk Club who instigated and still run the festival. Over the years 100s and 100s of performers have played at our fortnightly concerts. Many of those will be at the Festival and will be making cameo performances in this concert. The Folk School on the Wednesday and Thursday is one the club is rightfully proud of and is indicative of the club’s commitment to the development of young people and the genre.
And the Music Train just keeps getting bigger and more diverse. Two carriages spread over four trains and two days and each representing a different genre of music. They will ferry people to the festival in a very ‘green’ way (very small carbon footprint). It also helps with alleviating some of our parking problems.
We would like to thank all our sponsors whose names and logos appear on all our promotion material and programmes. In particular we would like to say thank you again to BlueScope whose promotion and support of our festival over many years has been one of the features that have kept us afloat. Wollongong Council has also been a great and active supporter through Destination Wollongong so it’s thanks to them. Finally we would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and organisers who give of their time unstintingly to ensure that this Festival not only remains “The Biggest Little Festival in The World” but also one of the best. Of course no introduction would be complete without thanking, Festival Artistic Director, David De Santi whose unbelievable energy, commitment and genius keeps the festival just “rolling along’.
As I said this is our 34th. Over the years the site may have changed the date may have changed but the quality remains high. This is attested to by the fact that every year our numbers increase. Enjoy the Festival, enjoy the music and enjoy this collection of assembled rare talent. Happy folking and (hopefully) see you in January 2020 Russell Hannah OAM President, Illawarra Folk Club
Welcome to our Country We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where Aboriginal people have performed age old customs, ceremonies of storytelling, dance, music and celebration. We acknowledge and pay our respect to Elders past and present. And we look to those of the future, for they hold the memories, traditions and hopes of indigenous Australia. They are also an integral part of the Dreaming for a truly united and reconciled Australia. Joyce Donovan, Aboriginal Elder

MESSAGES Lord Mayor, City of Wollongong The Illawarra Folk Festival has been bringing live music to the Illawarra for more than 30 years. It is one of the largest volunteer run music festivals in Australia and an annual highlight for music fans from across the country. Set beneath the spectacular northern Illawarra Escarpment in Bulli Showground, the festival features great music from international, national and local artists. Congratulations to the festival organisers, volunteers and loyal festival goers for making this such a wonderful event. I am sure you will enjoy the vibrant, collective energy and community atmosphere the festival is renowned for. Cr Gordon Bradbery OAM Wollongong City Lord Mayor
Project & Operations Director Hi everyone, Welcome to another Illawarra Folk Festival. Again, our programming committee has put together a great lineup of entertainment for our enjoyment. New regulations from Wollongong City Council have made it mandatory for us to add some further movement and clearway conditions for this festival. Please read, and take note of, the notice about this elsewhere in the Festival Program, and obey any instructions from venue and site managers so that our future festivals remain viable. We’re proud that our festival is entirely run by volunteers, and a lot of volunteers are required. In fact, the number of volunteers needed for each festival now numbers about four hundred. Thanks go to all our volunteers for this festival. It is fun to be a volunteer for the Illawarra Folk Festival in any capacity, and be part of a large team of people which puts together something very special. If you think you may be interested in volunteering for future festivals, please have a word to one of our volunteers wearing a blue vest at this festival. Of course, we partner with a lot of organisations as well, and have a lot of sponsors. I thank all of them because, without them, it also wouldn’t be possible. One of our key partners is the greyhound club which races weekly here at Bulli Showground. Throughout the year, Darren Hull and his staff do a great job maintaining the enclosed grounds which form the main part of our festival area. The 2019 Festival Organising Committee is listed separately in this publication. These are the people who contribute a huge amount of volunteer hours in leadership roles both throughout the year and during the festival itself. They are all very passionate about our festival, and they deserve an enormous amount of praise and appreciation. Let’s all enjoy the festival, and hope that we are blessed with good weather throughout. Neil Rowsell Operations and Project Director (Honorary), Illawarra Folk Festival

NSW Government I am delighted to send my best wishes to everyone attending the 2019 Illawarra Folk Festival. As a lover of music and violinist myself, it brings me a lot of joy seeing the Illawarra Folk Festival back bigger and better than ever. This amazing annual event that promotes and celebrates traditional folk music, playing host to some of the very best Australian and International folk artist. Offering the opportunity for people to come together in honour of folk music, the event has grown over the years into one of the most recognised in Southern NSW. Special unique events such as this play a vital role in our region's economy bringing in many regional visitors. Regional tourism plays an important role in growing the NSW economy, contributing $19.5 billion to the State in tourism consumption and directly employing 90,400 people - which accounts for 1 in 14 jobs. The NSW Government is committed to delivering more events in rural and regional NSW to support increased visitation and offer visitors more reasons to get out and see all that our State has to offer. I strongly recommend taking some time out to explore the Illawarra and South Coast if visiting this beautiful part of the world. You’ll be left with quite an experience. On behalf of the NSW Government, I congratulate the Illawarra Folk Festival team on an amazing line up for the 34th festival and wish everyone attending the most spectacular time. Gareth Ward MP Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast
Artistic Director
When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground you enter a peaceful and musical global village where you can leave your everyday cares behind. You enter a world of inspiration, vision, colour, creativity, harmony and community spirit - a utopia we wish could last all year.
To achieve this of course requires quite a huge team effort and thanks to a core of about 40 devoted volunteers, which swells to 400 plus, the 34th anniversary Illawarra Folk Festival will be another great celebration. Special mention to the incredibly hardworking Steering Committee of Neil Rowsell, Judy and Rod Cork, Robyn and Bruce Jackson, Graeme Morrison, Peter Davis and the inimitable Russell Hannah. What’s new? There is a dedicated Session Tent behind the Grandstand Bar while the Nags Lounge has become out volunteers Green Room. The blackboard concert has moved to the Piazza (near the Black Diamond Marquee). We’re proud to continue to support youth folk with the return of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra performing with special guests. It’s a great way for young folk musicians from all over the country to share and play folk music. We’re also continuing the Youth Tradition Awards and the Youth Concerts as well as the wonderful Folk School to nurture and develop our young performers. All this is part of the monster cultural event the festival has become. Here’s a few statistics – 162 acts from all over the world and Australia with 70 of them local, around 800 performers, 520 concerts / dances / sessions / workshops and 12 venues! Despite the scale of the festival we still manage to have ways to participate for all – playing music, singing, dancing, reciting, telling yarns and socialising! So bow your fiddles, pluck your banjos, strum your guitars, blow your trumpets, bang your drum, holler a shanty, squeeze your accordion, dance a tarantella or jig and enjoy our 34th Illawarra Folk Festival. David De Santi Artistic Director and Minister for Many Other Things
HITCH-HIKER’S GUIDE This may be your first folk festival, so here are some ideas about how to enjoy this year’s party. • Buy your pass online to save you money and time.
• Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with season passes.
• Make sure you pack summer clothes, colourful Mardi Gras style clothing, an umbrella for quick rain-showers, a refillable water bottle and lots of good cheer.
• If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway onto Grevillea Park Road and then to the main entry gate at Bulli Showground.
• If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main Bulli Showground Gate on Grevillea Park Road entry gate and head for the Festival Office.
• Make sure you get a full program when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your guide to the venues, performers and lots of general information.
• Once you’ve parked the car, head for the Global Green, Piazza or the Festival Bar in the main complex building, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program.
• There are 12 venues to choose from. You can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck. Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. However, you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing, shanty singers or impromptu sessions. • Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind. Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site. You’ll discover great music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see, move onto another venue.
• If all this fails, head for the Festival Bar, the Global Green or the Piazza. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to see and hear. • Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the three venues there - The Chapel and Miners Camp.
• At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians are always up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions. • Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow revellers when leaving.
ILLAWARRA FOLK CLUB AND ILLAWARRA FOLK FESTIVAL The Illawarra Folk Club was formed in 1979 and has conducted fortnightly concerts on and off in the Wollongong/Illawarra region ever since. Since 1985 the Club has presented the Illawarra Folk Festival 20 times in the village of Jamberoo and 14 times in Bulli. The festival has grown from a humble beginning to being recognised as one of Australia’s premiere folk festivals and the biggest in NSW.
The Illawarra Folk Club is a community based incorporated association dedicated to the preservation, performance and presentation of folklore in all its various forms. The members include many local folk musicians, dancers, poets and storytellers. The Club holds regular concerts and events at venues around the Illawarra area. The Festival is a sub-committee of the Folk Club with around 40 members. It meets once month during the year and more often as the festival approaches. If you are interested in helping with the Folk Club or Festival then contact us by calling 1300 887 034 or email info@illawarrafolkclub.org.au
The Club has provided support to a number of local artist members who have produced recordings. It has also assisted in providing folk performers to many community and charity events in the Illawarra. You can join the Club and receive discounts to the regular concerts. Folk Club membership forms are available from the website and the Festival Reception. www.illawarrafolkclub.org.au www.illawarrafolkfestival.com.au

This is the Illawarra Folk Festival’s thirty fourth festival. It is also the 16th compilation CD that we have produced. The Festival is, of course, conducted by the Illawarra Folk Club which this year celebrates 40 years of presenting concerts and festivals in the Illawarra and many of the artists appearing have also appeared at the Club’s fortnightly concerts over the 40 years prior to this. As always, this recording showcases the performers that help make the Illawarra Folk Festival one of the most diverse and friendly in Australia. Our sincere thanks go to the performers who have donated their music to make this CD possible. It acts not only as a promotion of this, 34th festival, but in years to come will be a constant reminder and an historical record of an event that is fast becoming entrenched in our culture. Our thanks as well to Graeme Morrison and David De Santi for the hard work that went into making this recording possible. This recording represents one of the few ways that you can take part of the Festival away with

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS The Illawarra Folk Festival is a major community event which has generated more than $115,000 for charities over the past 17 years and we want to do more. The festival is powered by a group of hardworking volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk who believe in giving back to the community Since 2001, beginning with a major Diageo/ Guinness community sponsorship, the festival has supported over 60 organisations including more recently Need A Feed, Bulli Surf Life Saving Club, headspace Wollongong, the Waniora Public School, Bulli Mens Shed, Disability Trust, Rotary Clubs of Wollongong, Cystic Fibrosis NSW, The Denny Foundation, NSW Cancer Council, APHEDA, refugee support group SCARF, the Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, the Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church, East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres Disability Services, Scouts groups, the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and the South Coast School for Children with Autism.
Thursday Charity Partners
Since 2001 the Illawarra Folk Festival has provided charity / non-profit organisations the opportunity to receive the benefits of the official opening day, Thursday. This is achieved by the sharing of the entry cost to the festival for Thursday and the proceeds of a raffle to our two nominated charities. It’s a great opportunity for folks who’ve not tasted the joy of a folk festival to get a sample for a mere $30 while supporting two worthwhile charities. Our 2019 charities are the Motor Neurone Disease Association of New South Wales and Leukaemia Foundation.
Over the past fourteen years in Bulli, through its charity bush dances, festival opening concerts and donations, the festival has given more than $50,000 in cash to the recipient charities. We continue to seek further partnerships with community and charity organisations as well to bolster our volunteer ranks. There are financial and social benefits for these organisations to be involved. So, if you are interested in helping us keep this great festival alive, then please contact us at: info@illawarrafolkclub.org.au or phone 1300 887 034.
Motor Neurone Disease Association of New South Wales
MND NSW provides information, support and education for people living with motor neurone disease, their families, friends and carers. We also provide information and education about motor neurone disease for health, community and residential care professionals. www.mndnsw.asn.au
Leukaemia Foundation
The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national charity dedicated to helping those with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders survive and then live a better quality of life. Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are all types of blood cancer and they can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time. Another 35 Australians are diagnosed each and every day. Although improved treatments and care are helping more people survive, sadly someone loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. In fact, blood cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer or melanoma. www.leukaemia.org.au

Humanitix Recipient Charity – Australian Children’s Music Foundation The 2019 Illawarra Folk Festival is utilising the ticketing platform Humanitix to sell online tickets. Humanitix is a not-for-profit organisation which redistributes the profits from booking fees to fund charities. The Illawarra Folk Festival has chosen the Australian Children’s Music Foundation as the recipient of these funds. The Australian Children’s Music Foundation (ACMF) is a not-for-profit organisation, established by Don Spencer, inspiring creativity and imagination by providing weekly music education classes and instruments to disadvantaged children and youth at risk in Australia. Across Australia, a dedicated team of ACMF teachers motivate, educate and inspire disadvantaged children and youth in free, long-term weekly music programs. Over 75% of Australian Public Schools do not have access to a music teacher, depriving them of the many benefits of music education. The ACMF is determined to change this. Since their inception, they have provided over 233,500 free music lessons of every kind, donated over $1,000,000 worth of instruments and received over 27,000 entries in the ACMF National Songwriting Competition. They are committed to delivering longterm programs in every state and territory in Australia. www.acmf.com.au

§§ Allowing BYO reusable water bottles and coffee cups. §§ Saying no to plastic bags and single use water bottles

We Need You
to make the Illawarra Folk Festival beat on!
The Illawarra Folk Festival is in its 34th year... It's a community based (non-profit) and organised effort arranged by the Illawarra Folk Club. Our festival is loved in so many ways by artists, patrons and volunteers. It takes a huge amount of volunteer effort to make it happen. During the course of the year over 30 team leaders dedicate many hours to coordinate and manage their tasks. These people are at the heart of our volunteer community. But for the festival to continue there needs to be new people to become Team Leaders. So if you think the following might suit you then please let us know: Helping present a world renowned music and spoken word event Supporting folk music in Australia Learning and developing event management skills Making new friends Creating memories of good times As a core Team Leader volunteer you would be committing to: Attending Organising Committee Meetings (monthly from July) Getting involved in pre festival planning, decisions and direction of the festival Managing a team of volunteers (including rostering, training, supervising and evaluating) Supporting your volunteers during the festival Providing post festival reporting and wrap up comments and suggestions. If you want the heart of the Illawarra Folk Festival to beat on, then please let us know! Send an email to info@illawarrafolkclub.org.au

Geographica
Geographica, presented by The Thomsons, is a nuanced odyssey through the world’s back blocks. Be prepared to dust off your passport, add a few obscure visas, and meet a cast of characters, including a Texan diner waitress masquerading as the Statue of Liberty, a Central Asian small time drug mule, an aspirational Bougainvillean boy in a maelstrom of anarchy, and reflect on the rhetoric of a post-apocalyptic world. Be there as Singapore falls, and take the road trip of a lifetime through West Bengal armed only with a Monkey God keychain.
Dingo’s Breakfast Are At it Again Uncle Jimbo’s Island Bar Lectures (60’& 70’s) is a scripted, participation powerpointed media show, with a narrative part written especially for the audience, where we will be often forcing said audience to utter sage, left wing thoughts not necessarily of their own. The show embraces a clutch of portraits of Australia and Australians, in an era full of Life With Hope, War Without End, Wimmin’s Lib and the Forty Hour Week. Darryl and Derrol McPorcine, the new bright lights of the Corporate World, present their seminal PowerPoint, Pirates of the Corpseration in which they endeavour to impress upon the peasant folk of our fair land Australia, their personal take on the direction our country is being taken by the great and benevolent financial wizards of Oz and/ or Elsewhere.
