Welcome to number 28 We are coming off the back of a bit of a financial drubbing in 2012 but we are nothing, if not game. One hundred and ten millimetres of rain on the Saturday night and Sunday morning, flooded campsites, bogged vehicles, damaged equipment and venues, but the bonhomie never faltered. It’s what folk festivals are about and despite writing this intro for 28 years, I still ‘love ‘em’, particularly this one. I suppose what it does prove is ‘come hell or high water the show will go on’. Our hard working committee, you’ll see their names in the programme, started work in mid January 2012. Whereas there is an occasional rest for the wicked, there is no rest for volunteer folk festival organisers and they have been hard at it ever since. The result is the festival that you are going to experience between 16th and 20th January. It is with a great deal of sadness that I report the passing of two of our great supporters over the years. We lost both Viv Sawyer and Cheryl O’Brien earlier in 2012. Viv was with us from the start and won the Woolly Yarn Spinning so often that we had to make her the judge. Cheryl was the Festival secretary in the 1990s before moving to Coolamon. She always took a keen interest in our doings even though ill health prevented her from attending in recent years. Despite last year, our festival continues to grow however the essential nature of the Festival has not changed. The quality of the acts remains high in every department and we remain ‘The biggest Little Festival in the world.’ We maintain our intimacy and involvement with our blackboards, sessions, poetry and spoken word. Our venues

The Underscore Orkestra

are relatively small so you are always up front and close and what you see is what you get. Every year folk say it looks our best programme yet - and who am I to argue with that. The programme - well it speaks for itself once again, but a couple of things are worthy of mention. This year the themed instrument is the accordion- the instrument of choice of course of our esteemed artistic director Dave De Santi. For 17 years he’s been directing the festival and after all that time he’s finally managed to sneak his instrument in. Well done Dave! Aria winner Jeff Lang, the iconic Christine Anu, The Song and Dance Man, Mike McClellan and Boogie Queen, Jan Preston head a great lineup of Australian performers. The fact that the Illawarra Folk Festival is on the international map is indicated that performers from Africa, Germany, Canada, Scotland, USA and the UK will all be there to make this one of Australia’s premier festivals. A person you will never see in the performers section of the programme is Tony Foley. Tony has been one of the backbones of the festival for 20 years. He has done the work that gets no recognition yet is essential to making our festival happen. This year Tony was made a life member of the club and he will be presented with his life membership badge at the festival finale. And the Music Train just keeps getting bigger and more diverse. Over 400 people in 8 carriages spread over three trains and two days and each representing a different genre of music travelled down last year. The brainchild of Brian Dunnett who

has once again worked assiduously all year to make it happen. It will ferry people to the festival in a very ‘green’ way (very small carbon footprint). It also helps with alleviating some of our parking problems. We would like to thank all our sponsors whose names and logos appear on all our promotion material and programmes. Without them we would be struggling to present the quality artistic event that is the Illawarra Folk Festival. Wollongong Council has also been a great and active supporter so it’s thanks to them. Finally we would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and organisers who give of their time unstintingly to ensure that this Festival not only remains “The Biggest Little Festival in The World” but also one of the best. Of course no introduction would be complete without thanking, Festival Artistic Director, Dave De Santi whose unbelievable energy, commitment and genius keeps the festival just “rolling along’. We also thank Tania, his wife, whose tolerance and forbearance keeps him just a tiny bit under control. As I said this is our 28th. Over the years the site may have changed the date may have changed but the quality remains high. This is attested to by the fact that every year our numbers increase. Wollongong City Council has been a proud supporter of the Illawarra Folk Festival for a number of years. During that time, we’ve been pleased to see this event go from strength to strength, attracting a diverse range of residents and visitors to the region.

It continues to be a privilege to be involved in a truly unique and multi award winning celebration of Australia’s and the world folk culture and heritage in the Illawarra. Over the years the Festival has been a fine ambassador for Australia to the many visitors that have discovered folk music and have wanted an insight into Australian culture, history and social celebrations. When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground you enter a new world. One full of inspiration, vision, creativity, harmony and community spirit. A utopia that we could wish could last all year!

The Illawarra Folk Festival is a community based event organised by volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk! The event has grown tremendously from its humble beginnings in 1985 to become a major stage in the Australian Folk Calendar and has been visited by thousands of patrons and performers over its history. Its future is dependent heavily on the goodwill and ongoing support of volunteers, artists, other organisations, local, state and federal government and the business community.

Each year Council supports a range of citywide and local suburb-based events that enhance our city’s cultural life and bring people together. Now in its 28th year, the 2013 Illawarra Folk Festival promises to be another exciting and inspiring one, with more than 600 performers involved in 350 events over the four days of the event. This is even more impressive considering it’s coordinately entirely by a team of dedicated volunteers. I warmly congratulate the organisers for delivering another great program, and encourage everyone to enjoy the wonderful performances it offers. The Festival continues to encourage, nurture and feature our young folk republicans. It is important for them to carry on the tradition and for them to see our more experienced tradition bearers. The introduction of the Youth Tradition Awards this festival and the continuance of the Folk Summer School continue the aims. The Festival also continues to support local folk performers (over 200 of them) and provides an opportunity for them to be showcased. It was pleasing to also be recognised in October by winning the NSW/ACT Regional Achievement & Community Awards for Events & Tourism. A further indication of the value of the festival to the region and its value as a major tourism event. A new pleasing initiative for this festival is the Living Legends Awards for the recognition of long standing volunteers. These are folk who have continuously supported the festival for 10 years or more! Hopefully as the festival continues this crop of Legends will grow. See later for their names. Thanks again to the amazing effort of the Republic Cabinet (Festival Steering Committee) – Mark Doran, Russell Hannah, Rod Cork, Judy Cork, Bruce Jackson, Robyn Jackson, Graeme Morrison, Peter O’Neill and Neil Rowsell. The fruits of their many hours of labour are on show! And of course thanks to the hundreds of volunteers, over 60 sponsors and supporter organisation sand 600 plus performers from all over the world and Australia for being part of the celebration.

The festival since 2001, beginning with the major Guinness sponsorship, has provided over $85,000 to a number of charities including Cancer Council NSW, SCARF, Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church, East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres, Scouts groups, SES Branches, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and South Coast School for Children with Autism. Over the past 7 years in Bulli, through its Charity Bush Dances, Festival Opening Concerts and donations from the Festival, we have provided over $15,000 in cash to the recipient charities. This year’s community partners include Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli PCYC, Bulli Primary School, Bulli High School, Disability Trust, Bulli Show Society, SCARF, GreenConnect, Bulli & Northern Illawarra Rotary Club, Northern Bulli Uniting Church and The Heart Foundation. We continue to seek further partnerships with community and charity organisations as well to bolster our volunteer ranks. There are financial and social benefits for these organisations to be involved. Once again I thank the amazing tolerance and ongoing support of my wife Tania (Minister for Home Affairs) and son Sam (Apprentice Minister) who continue to share our musical journey. There is a great sense of achievement in presenting the festival despite the hundreds of hours of work and the personal sacrifice of family time. I do need to also thank my day job employer, BlueScope Steel, for being tolerant with my passion for many years. Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Festival This may be your first folk festival, so here’s some ideas about what to do! • Buy your pass on-line to save you money and time. • Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with Season Passes. • If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway and get to the main entry gate. • If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main entry gate and head for the Festival Office. • Make sure you get a full programme when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your map to the venues, performers and general information. • Once you’ve parked the car head for the Global Green or the bar, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the programme. • There are 12 venues to choose from. You can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck! Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. However you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing, impromptu sessions....

• Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind! Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site! You’ll discover music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see move onto another venue. • If all this fails, head for the bar, the Global Green, Tantric Turtle Café or the Piazza. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Hint: Have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to do. • Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the venues there. • At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians will be up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions! • Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow friends when leaving!

It is situated at the main southern entry to the Showground complex. This is where you purchase passes or exchange your pre-purchased pass voucher for a wristband. Please wear it at all times! Adjacent to the Festival Office is the registration area for artists, sponsors and media. You may park your car temporarily near the Office while you get your wristband but then you must park your vehicle in the designated parking areas inside the showground.

Injury at events The IFC is the promoter of this recreational event, the Illawarra Folk Festival (IFF). It utilises existing grounds, buildings, stalls, kennels, roadways and pathways, owned or leased from various organisations. It does so on a “as is basis” and subject to existing faults (if any), the current condition and state of repair, of the grounds, buildings, stalls, kennels, roadways and pathways, so that to the extent permitted by law, IFC disclaims all liability for any injuries or death sustained, however caused, during the running of the IFF. The IFC has tried to make the IFF an enjoyable and safe experience, please take care and stay alert at all times you are at the IFF. If you or your minor are injured immediately ask a volunteer for assistance or directions to or first aid room or contact an emergency service. You assume all risks whilst you attend or participate at the IFF, regardless of what activity you are involved in at the IFF. By purchasing a ticket, or receiving a ticket as a performer, or as our guest, you acknowledge and accept these terms and conditions in your personal capacity and on behalf of any other member of a band or group you are applying for, and for any accompanying minor. If you purchase tickets for a minor, you are responsible for their behaviour and safety whilst at the IFF.

The Festival runs entirely on volunteers who appreciate a helping hand and the odd thank you! If you can also volunteer a few hours work then please see the wonderful folk in the Volunteer Registration area in the Slacky Flat Bar.

Carparking

There is plenty of free parking inside the Showground. Please do not park in the surrounding streets or in the Sports Club. Exit from the site onto Princes Highway is a left turn only. See map on right.

Dance Zones

Dance zones have been created at the sides of the Black Diamond Marquee, Slacky Flat Bar and Show Pavilion. Look for the signs and markings and feel to free to dance without blocking the view of seated patrons. Please do not relocate positioned chairs from venues.

Festival Bar

The Festival organises its own bar and the proceeds help keep Festival Pass prices down. Please patronise it but do drink sensibly! The bar is conducted strictly according to licensing regulations, ie under-aged and intoxicated persons will not be served and no alcohol is to be taken inside or outside licensed areas. Various selection of Coopers beers, wines, Pink Lady Cider and soft drinks available. Ice is available for campers and stallholders.

Camping

Many festival goers camp in the grounds around the Showground and do so for the duration of the Festival. They all quickly settle into the relaxed village atmosphere and musical environment. • Please no campfires or pets. • There is to be a minimum of 2.5 metres between tents. One vehicle is able to be parked beside tents on Slacky Flats area. Additional vehicles will need to be parked in the car parking areas. • Please recycle waste where possible. • Children and youth who are camping must be accompanied by a responsible camping adult. • Please do not leave any valuables in cars or tents. • Generators - The use of generators is only permitted by motorhomes or caravans camping in the Wanders Camp area between 8am and 8pm to recharge ‘house batteries’.

Late Night Partying

A noise curfew will apply to all camping areas after 10pm. Anyone wishing to party on can go to the Grandstand Bar area inside the Grandstand building. Please keep all sessions inside the building. Please be courteous of other campers and festival neighbours.

Lost and Found

All lost and found items including persons should be reported to the Festival Office.

Children

The Festival aims to provide a safe environment for families. Parents and guardians are responsible for their children at all times. The Shed, in the centre of the showground, is the kids entertainment venue and not a child minding facility so carers and parents are asked to stay with their children.

Visitor Surveys

A survey is being conducted. The information gathered is confidential and is used to improve future festivals and assess the quality and impact of the festival on the community. We sincerely appreciate your assistance by completing them.

There are limited hot water showers so please conserve water and keep your showers short. There are hot showers for women and men under the Grandstand. There are also some showers in the small toilet block near the entry to the main Festival site.

First Aid First aid is available from the volunteers at the Northern end of the Dog Kennels near the Global Green venue. (See map inside back cover). Safety Concerns and Emergencies Please notify a Festival Volunteer or the Festival Office if any safety issues arise as soon as possible. l no waste to landfil The Illawarra Folk Festival is committed to minimising waste and its impact on the environment including the recycling of food, plastics, glass and cardboard. The aim is no waste to landfill. This is a big task and requires attendees, campers, volunteers, stallholders and performers to work together. There are 3 waste streams at the Festival. Each waste stream has an individual bin and is identified by the colour of the bin lid. We are always looking for Green Folk recycling volunteers. Whats New at the Festival? Here’s a summary of program and venue changes since the last festival for our returning patrons and for the new ones – enjoy!

• The Festival is now a Smoke Free Music Festival, presented in conjunction with The Heart Foundation. • The Shed venue has been combined with the Youth Folk events and has been positioned in the centre of the showground Piazza area. • A Busk Stop for potential buskers - has been established outside the Showground Pavilion near the Festival Bus Stop. • The Blackboard venue has moved to be adjacent to the Grandstand Bar and will be hosted by Tantric Turtle Café • The Slack Flat bar stage and venue has been completely overhauled with change of stage location and inclusion of curtains to assist with the sound management. • The Honey Eaters Grove has been removed for 2013 – there are drumming opportunities at other venues. • The Miner’s Camp venue returns with some catering. • Youth Traditions Awards have been included to encouragement young folk to play traditional folk music. • Dance zones have been created at the sides of the Black Diamond Marquee, Slacky Flat Bar and Show Pavilion. Look for the signs and markings and feel to free to dance without blocking the view of seated patrons. Please do not relocate positioned chairs from venues.

Festival Features In addition to the concerts there are a number of special events throughout the festival. Here’s a summary of some of them.

Accordion – Theme Instrument

Opening Dance

2013 is the year of the accordion at the Illawarra Folk Festival and sees maestros visiting our fair festival to share their knowledge and love of this unique instrument. The accordion (from Greek a + cordion - α + χορδιον - meaning without chord) is a boxshaped musical instrument of the bellowsdriven free-reed aerophone family, sometimes colloquially referred to as a squeezebox. A person who plays the accordion is called an accordionist. The instrument is played by compressing or expanding the bellows whilst pressing buttons or keys, causing valves, called pallets, to open, which allow air to flow across strips of brass or steel, called reeds, that vibrate to produce sound inside the body. This instrument is sometimes considered a one-man-band, as it needs no accompanying instrument. The performer normally plays the melody on buttons or keys on the right-hand manual, and the accompaniment, consisting of bass and pre-set chord buttons, on the lefthand manual. The accordion is a free reed instrument and is in the same family as other instruments such as the sheng and khaen. The sheng and khaen are both much older than the accordion and this type of reed did inspire the kind of free reeds in use in the accordion as we know it today. The accordion’s basic form is believed to have been invented in Berlin in 1822 by Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann, Wikipaedia. Bands and musicians with accordions at the festival include Christiaan Dolislager, The Con Artists, Don’t Mention the Wall, Mzaza, No Such Thing, Peter Ellis, The Schlockmeisters, Somesing Laik Zat, Terry Serio and the Ministry of Truth, Tia Wilson, Thrillbilly Stomp, Vardos, Underscore Orkestra, Wongawilli and Zumpa. The specially constructed Global Green stage at the Showground is the scene for the opening Bush Dance. Bring the kids, dancing shoes or an instrument to join the acoustic dance band. All the dances will be called and walked through.

Welcome To Country

Held at the Thursday Night concert, the welcome will be performed by local aboriginal elder, Vic Chapman. Vic was the first Aboriginal School Principal in NSW. He has a special affiliation with the Folk Festival through his late son John who for a number of years was a festival volunteer and attendee. Vic has presented our ‘Welcome to Country’ for the six previous festivals at Bulli.

Lunch Mediterranean Style

Enjoy a scrumptious lunch with the musical and tastes spirit of the Mediterranean. There’ll be paella, moussaka, sangria, salads, panne (bread) and Italian cake. Enjoy the music of the Mediterranean with Mzaza and Zumpa and friends. A great tradition continues. Adults $15, Youth $7. Passes available from the Festival Office from 10am on the day or book online.

Opening Charity Concert

A fast moving concert with 8 acts displaying just a flavour of what’s to come over the three days ahead.. All door and raffle takings go to our two charities – The Shepherd Centre for the Deaf and the Bulli PCYC. Entry is $10 or a donation with a Festival Pass.

This is the only Festival to hold this great gastronomic and musical event and there are some who would say that that is just as well. Bookings are essential for this three–course gourmet treat. Non–tripe eaters can join in for a plate of ‘Grey Sludge’. But dare be critical of this culinary delight and you will be fed ‘green sludge’– grey sludge that has been left in the sun for a day or two. Positions at this great epicurian, gourmet event are strictly limited so please book on-line early to avoid disappointment.

The festival has always prided itself on its cultural children’s entertainment. There will be 30 sessions of music, dancing, storytelling, puppets, instrument making and fun.

From The City To The Bush – Australian Music

This concert is dedicated to Alan Scott who a great collector and interpreter of Australian traditional songs and was the first person invited to all our festivals until his untimely death. Each year we pull together some of his friends and those who are carrying on his traditions.

The festival provides a Green Music Train transport alternative over the festival weekend. There are 2 services on Saturday and 1 on Sunday morning with 8 themed music carriages. Trains depart from Bondi Junction Station and platform 25 at Central Station. Musicians will entertain you on the trip to Bulli Station, from which is just a ten minute walk to the festival. Entry into the carriages is with a CityRail ticket and festival pass. You can pre-purchase your festival pass or purchase at the end of your journey at the Festival Office at the Showground. The 2013 Illawarra Folk Festival will feature the inaugural Youth Traditions Awards to encourage and celebrate young artists who perform traditional folk songs and tunes. Young artists will aged between 9 and 25 will be have the chance to perform in the Youth Traditions Award concerts at the festival. The Youth Traditions Awards are designed to: • encourage young artists to explore and perform traditional folk music from Australia and abroad • broaden young artists repertoire of folk songs and tunes and keep folk traditions fresh and alive give young artists promotional opportunities through winning an award

The Australian silent comedy, The Kid Stakes, is a live action silent comedy based on the Fatty Finn cartoon characters. This highly entertaining 1927 film is a happy irreverent piece of suburban Australiana with a series of lunatic subplots woven around the schoolboy, Fatty Finn, his friends and enemies, and Hector the Goat. Jan Preston’s original score for piano and percussion (kazoo, tin drum, snare and plastic bags) reinforces the story, characters and comedy of the film.

Songs of Old Comrades

The working class, the union movement, the political parties of the left and the Folk Movement have been the source of many great songs, particularly those that have a chorus. George Mann, Rick Palieri and a host of Old Comrades will be on hand to make sure these songs stay alive. Be prepared to join in.

Kid Stakes Silent Film & Music

One of the most used (and most abused) genre’s is Parody. The troops loved it during wartime because they knew the tunes and changed the words to suit their circumstances (mostly quite rude). Bigruss will be gathering some of the festivals finest songwriters (they don’t know it yet) who dabble in the art form for a concert that will tickle more than your fancy.

We Made the Steel

The steel industry produced most of Australia’s iconic trademarks from the Hill’s Hoist to the rusting galvanised sheet on the bush dunny. Steel spread the railways out to back of Bourke, steel ploughed the soil, steel brought in the harvest and stored it, sheared the sheep and built the shed in which they were shorn. Wherever the old Southern Cross wind pump creaks, there’s the work of BHP and Lysaghts. Here the stories in song with The Roaring Forties.

Woody Guthrie Tribute

What with economies collapsing, ice caps melting and the weather going feral you might as well have a good laugh. Festival funny men Glover and Sorrensen have collected some of the best funny songwriters at the festival including Gregory North, Dingo’s Breakfast, Mal Webb, The Ballpoint Penguins, Peter Mace and others to help you forget the world’s problems. Indeed – you might as well laugh mate! Warning. there could be coarse language and themes!

There wouldn’t be a folksinger worth his/ her salt who doesn’t somewhere in their repertoire have a Woody Guthrie song. Woody was born 100 years in 1912 and tribute concerts were held throughout the year to celebrate his works, the Illawarra Folk Club had one and we are collecting as many singers at the festival to do their favourite Woody song. Don’t miss this one.

This gives you a chance to air your favourite poem or recite or read your latest composition. It’s a free for all and everyone gets a go. A tribute to the folk songs The Dubliners made famous and have been heard the world over in pubs and clubs for 50 years. Members of Wongawilli who turned 25 this year, Riogh and other festival friends will form a super folk band to play the classics.

Volunteer Living Legends The Illawarra Folk Festival has survived since its inception on the enormous effort of volunteers. Join the Festival choir and perform with Christine Anu and Mike McClellan at the Festival Finale on Sunday evening! The Festival choir will be led by Lotte Latukefu who lectures in singing in the Faculty of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong. “Unpretentious, uncomplicated, and honest.” Mike Raine. Alan Blackshaw is a singer/ songwriter who has been writing and performing for over 20 years. He is a performer strongly grounded in the folk tradition of the singer songwriter. His songs reflect a keen eye for observation, covering a broad subject range.

SAT 1.30pm-2.15pm Nag’s Lounge The Amazing 3 are an award winning Sydney-based trio whose sound draws deep on the roots of country, rockabilly, folk and blues music. Using fine voices, close harmonies and nifty guitar they collaborate on original material as well as arranging the classics in quirky, engaging ways.

Ana Otero is one of Australia`s foremost recognised dancer/teacher/choreographers. Having performed internationally as well as nationally, her experience is second to none: with much of her study done in Spain. The dance troupe is dedicated to learning and performing Traditional Flamenco.

Acoustic Elements Scott Jolley and Brendan Wright are a fun mash-up of percussive grooves, Latin rock and jam songs, with covers thrown in from the 1960’s to today. They’re excited to show Illawarra what they do for their very first IFF!

A roving street performer who can juggle - multi ball and club juggling.

SAT 2.30pm-3pm Piazza Juggling Workshop *Roving around the Festival. Warren ‘Arch’ Bishop is a past winner of the Australian National Folk Festival Reciter of the Year. An all-round good guy, he is a versatile MC, a spinner of yarns, and a terrific reciter of verse. Arch can make you laugh or cry, often in the same poem.

Bajaly Suso

A brilliant kora instrument player and singer, coming from the Gambia in West Africa Bajaly Suso’s musicianship is exceptional. His kora playing is fast and furious, while retaining grace and beauty in the music. He is a singer of the Griot caste, hereditary storytellers, musicians, artists and historians of the West African Mandinka Empire. Bajaly has inherited the tradition of the kora from his father, who in turn learnt from his father, and so on from the first known kora player, Moussa Suso, his ancestor. And so the story goes.

Barbara has been teaching new autoharp players for the last 10 years at festivals all over the state of Arizona. This is Barbara’s 3rd year attending the Illawarra Festival, to share the joy of playing the autoharp down under. Eclectic musical interests range from folk, country, oldtime, Carter family and singer-songwriter. Her good friend Reanna Flemons will be joining her with her autoharp.

Singer-songwriter Barry Skipsey has a passion for life at the “End of the Bitumen”. A resident of Alice Springs for three decades, his songs portray the colour and character of the bush. As a young man, his early songs captured the Outback spirit of a shearer’s roustabout and a deckhand on a prawn trawler. As a father, his songs of Life, Love and Family will make you think, laugh and cry.

Breathe new life into an English tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. This style of cheerful handkerchief-waving and stick-clashing was imported into Australia with the convicts, but lay low due to cringe, like much of our convict past. Now revived with youthful splendour and technicolour flowers, Black Joak hope you enjoy their dancing as much as they do.

Brian Bell

Brian hails from the Blue Mountains of NSW and is a regular at Bush Poetry Festivals around the country. His poetry is provocative, sensitive, challenging and imminently enjoyable. Brian brings a sense of “what’s going to happen next” with him wherever he goes and his verse is well known for the unexpected “sting in the tail”. Brian has won some of the Country’s most prestigious literary awards, The Gulgong Henry Lawson Award for Adult Poetry, the John O’Brien Original Humorous Award and the Will Ogilvy Written Competition, in which he picked up all 3 places!

The BMC group “Urban Scrub” carries on the performance traditions of the BMC founders The Bushwhackers 1952-58.They want to keep our traditions alive by sharing the songs, tunes, dances, stories and poems from and inspired by Australia’s past and present. Urban Scrub members play concertinas, violins, piano accordions, banjos, guitars, harmonicas, button accordions, chord harps, whistles, flutes and a range of other instruments. Band members also sing Australian Bush songs and call bush dances.

The Butcher Boys

The Butcher Boys were formed in the year of our Lord 2010 with the purpose of singing the words and melodies of a time since past but relevant to the present and future. These melodies are delivered in the old time way using only string band instruments, voices and no electricity. Songs of redemption, trains, lost love, driftin’, broken hearts and life’s daily trials make up the songbook of the Butcher Boys whose major influences are Old Time and Bluegrass tunes from the turn of the century to the present day. Chord-eaux is an Illawarra band which was originally formed in 2009 by people who played regularly at the Wongawilli bush dance on Wednesday evenings. The primary purpose of the band was, and still is, to provide entertainment for residents of aged care facilities. Geri, Helen, Pat, Ruth, Bob and Neil love singalong songs and like to perform “with”, rather than “to”, their audiences.

Claire Roberts is a long-standing member of the Illawarra Folk Club. In 2012 she released her new album The Leonards Hill Dance, a compilation of songs about her experiences as a full-time musician working around Australia. She has woven much local content into her songs, having taken a keen interest in the development of the Illawarra over the years. She is accompanied by Jenna Hogan on piano and vocals and Glen Bowker on guitar. In her second show, she performs most of the songs off Joan Baez’s first Vanguard album, released in the 1960s, accompanied by Glen Bowker on acoustic guitar.

Hailing from The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music, ‘The Con Artists’ is an all ages community ensemble combining young up and coming students with some of the regions experienced folk musicians. With a vast line-up of wind, brass, percussion and string instruments, the band’s high energy repertoire is influenced and informed by the musical traditions of New Orleans brass bands, Klezmer, Balkans, French-Canadian Rock n Reel, Italian Folk, Romani and others. The Con Artists are directed by David Rooney and feature David De Santi on accordion and Mark Holder-Keeping on sax/clarinet.

Simone and Craig have been active on the folk circuit for over 13 years. Karis’ engaging stage presence is matched by the intensity of her self-penned lyrics. Though unremittingly thought-provoking, her performance is never too ‘heavy’. Dom Flemons is a folk singer and multiinstrumentalist from Phoenix, AZ who has travelled all over the world playing his unique brand of old-time music. Playing a variety of different traditional music styles as well as original material, Dom has made a splash on the old-time music scene cofounding the Grammy-award winning string band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Armed with a wide variety of traditional American instruments, Dom will bedazzle folks with his entertaining as well as informative presentation of American over a range of 100 years. Erika began practicing yoga in 1997 sampling numerous styles of yoga. After discovering Dru Yoga in 2004 she was inspired to deepen her yoga experience. Huge lifestyle benefits led to a decision to begin the Dru Yoga Teacher Training Diploma in 2007. Although training initially for personal interest, a desire to share her love of yoga grew. Erika now teaches open yoga classes, Mums and Bubs yoga, and yoga for kids.

Both having very musically influenced childhoods, they started collaborating in their school music class and created their own new sound. Lucette has toured with the KHS Senior Concert Band and both girls are a part of the school Vocal Group, with who they recently performed at the Sydney Town Hall. At age 14, both girls share a strong passion for music, LIeesha having played guitar for over seven years and Lucette playing a range of instruments including guitar, piano, clarinet and djembe.

This Brisbane six-piece is forging a reputation as one of Australia’s ‘must-see’ world music acts. Mzaza’s sensual stage show, eclectic instruments and unique way of expressing their influences have been captivating audiences around Australia and on the international airwaves. Frenchborn singer Pauline Maudy is electrifying and sings in French, Spanish, Turkish and Ladino. Talented multi-instrumentalists play a dizzying array of exotic instruments including violin, kamanche tarhu Persian violin, guitar, double bass, accordion, kaval and ney flutes, and percussion.

No Such Thing is a group of musicians who play collected Australian dance tunes. The unusual name came about after a Scottish musician commented that “there is no such thing as Australian dance music”. The band recreates the authentic feel of the old time dance bands and will soon get your feet tapping. They are a favourite of the dancing fraternity, playing monthly at Wongawilli, and at other dances.

Nancy Kerr & James Fagan

They are one of folk music’s great partnerships. English fiddler and singer Nancy Kerr came to prominence in her groundbreaking duo with Eliza Carthy before meeting Australian singer and multi-instrumentalist James Fagan in 1995. They released their first CD in 1997 and have toured internationally ever since. Powerful harmonies, stellar instrumentation, and a natural, joyous connection with one another on stage make for an unforgettable performance. Nancy and James celebrated 15 years on the road in 2012. In that time they have won three BBC Folk Awards including Best Duo award in 2003 and 2011.

He has celebrated 40 years of marriage, turned 60, and marked 6000 professional gig during his 36 years “without a real job”. September saw the achievement of a 25 year marathon residency at The Wisemans Ferry Inn and with the new triple CD set “Calling it a Day” scheduled for release in 2013 he will have released exactly 24 continuous hours of recordings.

ites to deliver his music in a sophisticated, world orientated, groove infused style that will have you in a feel good mood in no time! From varied musical backgrounds, they have recently formed to explore and perform their diverse musical style.

Paul Mbenna, aka Mister Paul, was a charttopping pop star before he left Tanzania for Australia in 2007. Now resident in Sydney, he has teamed up with the Okapi Guitar Band to create a live show direct from the nightclubs of Dar Es Salaam. The Okapi Guitar Band is Australia’s longest surviving Afropop group, described by Stani Goma 3PBS-FM as “an amazing group”, “proving that music has no frontiers” for their deep knowledge of African guitar band styles.

Peter Ellis

Peter Ellis is one of Australia’s leading collectors and performers of traditional and old time Australian social dance and dance music. The tunes are performed on a variety of ‘bush instruments’ - button accordion, anglo concertina, tin whistle and mouth organ. He has been MC and musician with the Wedderburn Oldtimers Orchestra since 1979 and leads his own band - the celebrated Emu Creek Bush Band.

Penny and the Mystics

This popular South Coast folk-influenced roots and reggae band has toured NSW and Queensland on a federal government Contemporary Music Touring Program grant since their last appearance at Bulli in 2011 and are off to WA in February. Fresh from the recent Sydney Blues and Roots Festival, Penny and the Mystics have prepared a special acoustic set for this year’s festival – showcasing original tracks from their critically-acclaimed album, new songs and some of their favourite folk tunes. Prepare to be enchanted by Penny Hartgerink’s soaring vocals and some very tight playing from Jedd Bradmore (bass) and Joe Winkler (drums and vocals), with special guest Ben Fowler from Southerly Change on guitar.

Peter is a performance bush poet and writer who has entertained audiences at festivals and poetry competitions from Gympie to Port Fairy including the Tamworth Country Music Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, the Royal Easter Show in Sydney and the National Folk Festival in Canberra. Peter is the current Australian Bush Poetry Champion, and has on three occasions, won the prestigious Golden Damper Award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival for performance poetry.

Combining Indian classical techniques with Jazz, Gypsy and Western Classical influences, The Picture Box Orchestra are unlike anything else you have ever seen. The resulting music is a curious melting pot of musical genres taking the audience on a journey from slow lilting ballads to wild and uplifting dance tracks. Collectively they have worked with Nitin Sawhney, Akram Khan, Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and The Shaolin Monks of China and more. Each of the musicians brings something unique from their own backgrounds to the project. Individually these artists have extraordinary careers and are heralded for their work.

The Recycled String Band

The group features instruments made from recycled and reused materials. The instruments are fashioned from all sorts of items, including old hub caps, cigar boxes, tea tins, suit cases and other items found at garage sales, opportunity shops, markets and junk yards. The band is equally at home in the blues realm or junkyard roots and old time country. Formed by singer songwriter/ instrument maker Luke R Davies he is joined by multi junkyard instrumentalist Chris Mangan, Jack Jensen, Bruce Gregory and Brian Rollie Dwyer they aim to have fun, environmentally friendly and entertaining.

The Roaring Forties

The Roaring Forties - an archetypal trad-style harmony group with salty maritime songs and other robust musical examinations of Australian social, industrial and political history. Choruses, harmonies and wit abound. The ‘Forties will be presenting their new CD, “We Made the Steel”, during the Festival. The songs – by Robin Connaughton and John Warner – are augmented by anecdotes and slides and are based on Robin’s personal experiences working in the steel industry in Newcastle and Port Kembla during the 1960s and 70s. The songs cover a surprisingly large range of emotions and musical styles with a deal of lively accompaniment.

Our own cuddly Sir Big Russ, aka Russell Hannah, was awarded an Order of Australia Medal on 26 January 2011, hence the Sir. Russell proclaimed, as the new Presidento of the Folk Republic of Bulli, that his acceptance of the award would be on behalf of the ‘thousands of others’ who volunteer in the Illawarra for community events and in recognition of the folk scene as a whole. A life-long love of words has also led to co-authoring a book on Australian railway folklore, writing poetry, limericks and associating with other poets and yarn-spinners. However he still does remain a tormenter of accordion players and a lover of tripe....

Senor Cabrales is a group of seven traditional musicians from Australia and Spain who have come together to share their passion for the music of the Celtic areas of Europe, with a particular focus on the musical traditions of Asturias, Galicia and Brittany. Instruments include fiddle, Spanish pipes gaita, mandolin, bouzouki, flute, whistle, tenor banjo, bombarde, mandola and bodhran, interwoven with rich harmonic rhythm and driving percussion.

The Simpson Three

The Simpson Three are a trio of Celtic musicians performing predominantly Irish music - with a dash of Swing! Declan, Bec and Clancy all promise an explosive blend of traditional and contemporary tunes and songs. Their line up includes tenor banjo, mandolin, fiddle, bodhran and guitar. The trio have recently won the Peter J Daly award, FAA youth Award and Declan Affley Awards for excellence in Traditional Irish music. These three cheeky siblings know how to have fun and promise to crank it up!

Shalani

Shalani Thomas is a local Bulli school girl, who has been singing since she was two, and started playing guitar at age eight. Now 10 years old, Shalani plays acoustic guitar and a six string banjo which features in several of her songs. Shalani writes and sings her own songs, and also does some beautiful covers of Edie Brickell, Taylor Swift, Kasey Chambers and even Bruno Mars. Shalani has performed on stage and street at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. She won Crowd’s Favourite award at Thirroul Seaside Arts talent quest. She has also played with Australian artists Troy Cassar Daly and Carter and Carter.

Tommy performs his own songs with guitar accompaniment. At just 13, he has a talent for strong melodies and thoughtful lyrics that describe the world of the very young. He has performed at previous folk festivals, schools festivals, and Viva La Gong. As well, he plays piano, and is learning classical guitar and some folk songs.

Tribal Jewels Dance Co. is Illawarra’s premier Tribal Style bellydance troupe. Artistic director and master teacher, Jacqueline Peperkamp is an award winning member of the NSW Bellydance community. Jacqueline first formed Tribal Jewels dance troupe early 2004, which has since gone on to perform locally and nationwide. Tribal Style Bellydance is richly flavoured by gypsy dance influences from Rajasthan, India, Egypt, Morocco, Spain, Turkey and tribal Asia.

Formed in January 2012 but already becoming well known in the folk festival scene, Tolka perform a mix of traditional and original Irish tunes and songs, partnering with original Irish step dances. Awardwinning guitarist Robert Hillman’s driving rhythms with Cameron Hibb’s punchy banjo combined with fiddle player Hilary Glaisher’s raw melodies and Allan Evans’ lyrical flute come together to produce an eclectic traditional sound with a modern Melbournian twist. Throw in two energetic Irish dancers, Matt Harriage and Bec Voake, and Tolka is a feast for the ears and eyes.

They are based out of Portland Oregon and have been touring the US, Canada, Europe and Central America for the past seven years. Vardos

Livewire violinist Alana Hunt shreds through seductive serenades and hurtling wedding dances chased by Kirri double bass, and Sofia accordion with burning vocal laments from the Balkans. Vardos have roamed extensively through Eastern Europe learning from Roma gypsy musicians in Transylvanian villages, Bucharest kitchens and Hungarian music schools. Formed by Alana in 1993, Vardos has performed extensively in Australia, Europe, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Memphis Tennessee and appeared on Spicks and Specks ABC TV . They have supported The Cat Empire and Gipsy Kings and have been nominated and shortlisted for Aria, Golden Fiddle and BBC Radio3 World Music Awards.

The Volatinsky Trio plays music laced with the flavours of Russia and the Balkans on an exotic combination of instruments. They have headlined at The National Folk Festival 2010 & 2012 and the Fairbridge Festival WA. Lucy Voronov from Minsk Belarus is one of the great players of cimbalom hammer dulcimer. Cellist Anatoli Torjinski Odessa, is renowned for his brilliant jazz/world-style improvisations. Kiev-trained Stephen Lalor guitar & Russian domra works with Australian and Asian orchestras as a mandolin specialist. Their CD Troika is out through Planet.

Wiyanga Nanga Mai is an Indigenous and non-Indigenous dance troupe. They are 14 women who are mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers who believe in health and well-being for not just themselves but their families and communities. They spread a message of ‘ it’s never too late to use it or you lose it’. This approach to well-life with movement through contemporary music and humour is a good mix of staying, maintaining and feeling good.

Zondrae King

Zondrae sees the world through a ‘Mother’s Eye’ and writes from the heart. She recently was runner up in Far North Qld ABC Radio poetry comp in a field of over 235. She continues to write and perform in a unique way drawing from her experiences of life at Lightning Ridge and travel throughout Asia and Australia. Covering everything from her ‘operation’ to the Southern Cross she is sure to have selected a poem to perform that will touch most festival goers.

Thank You! Hi everyone, Welcome to the 2013 Illawarra Folk Festival. Our programming committee has again put together an excellent programme for your enjoyment, and I’m sure you’re going to have a wonderful time. As always, the festival is the culmination of a year of planning and organising by our steering committee and other dedicated individuals. It is very rewarding to be involved with these people and these activities, and, if you are at all interested in being a part of this, please let one of our festival management team know. These are the people wearing the blue vests. We welcome new faces of all ages. Indeed, we need new people to ensure that our festival benefits from new ideas, and so that our festival has people to take it into the future. The first step this year, as always, was to conduct a debrief shortly after the 2012 festival. The steering committee then set in place working groups for the following activities: •

From July onwards, we had to really start focusing on the nitty-gritty of getting the 2013 festival set up properly. More people became involved, and specific functional meetings were held regularly for activities including: •

Welcome to the 2013 Illawarra Folk Festival. Despite all the dramas of organising the festival with a volunteer committee, we can promise you an even more exciting and enjoyable festival this year. Having just come back from attending a number of music festivals across NSW and Victoria (and leaving aside my natural bias) I think that we have one of the best well-rounded folk festivals in Australia. While we aim to keep the festival at a comfortable size, we have also managed to squeeze in more attractions and reorganised some of the venues to improve the sound. The festival is jam packed with a great variety of artists, whether you like the more traditional folk or bluegrass acts or love to dance to the gypsy bands. Beside the great music, there is plenty of fun to be had at the workshops, blackboard concerts, dance, Green Music Train, poet’s breakfast or just chilling out and watching the people go by. We’re also pleased to support the younger musicians who will be the future of folk, through youth scholarships to the music school or the opportunity to play at the youth concerts or blackboard venues. This year we will be expanding our social media input and hope to have photos, videos and comments up on Facebook as events unfold at the festival and of course we will be continuing our twitter feeds of exciting events as they occur.

By December, regular site visits to the Bulli Showground were being undertaken as the 2013 festival loomed.

A special thanks should go towards all the people who have assisted in promoting the festival in the Marketing and Media area - you have been a great team to work with. In particular, an enormous thank you to Dave De Santi who looked after the Marketing and Media area while I was away. The team is slowly growing which enables volunteers to gain a variety of experiences, however we are always looking for new volunteers to assist us in publicising the festival, as there are such a variety of roles to perform.

I won’t mention specific people here, but the 2013 Festival Organising Committee is listed separately in this publication. There are some 50 names in this list, and these are the people who contribute a

Illawarra Folk Club & Illawarra Folk Festival The Illawarra Folk Club was formed in 1979 and has conducted fortnightly concerts on and off in the Wollongong/Illawarra region ever since.

The Festival is a sub-committee of the Folk Club with around 40 members. It meets once month during the year and more often as the festival approaches.

Since 1985 the Club has presented the Illawarra Folk Festival 20 times in the village of Jamberoo and 7 times in Bulli. The festival has grown from a humble beginning to being recognised as one of Australia’s premiere folk festivals and the biggest in NSW.

The Illawarra Folk Club is a community based incorporated association dedicated to the preservation, performance and presentation of folklore in all its various forms. The members include many local folk musicians, dancers, poets and storytellers. The Club holds regular concerts and events at venues around the Illawarra area.

The Club has provided support to a number of local artist members who have produced recordings. It has also assisted in providing folk performers to many community and charity events in the Illawarra. It has produced a monthly newsletter for the past 30 years. The Venues A folk festival is made up of a number of various sized venues and food and drink facilities. The IIlawarra Folk Festival has 12 venues including a Festival and 2 food and market areas – the Global Green and the Piazza. All of the venues are within the confines of the Bulli Showground.

Concerts

This is in the Grandstand building and is adjacent to the Slacky Flat Bar. It hosts sessions from early to late and a number of concert and spoken word events such as the Woolly Yarnspinning and Limericks Competition.

This is the main festival concert space set in the middle of the Showground Racing Track. It will feature all the major concerts from Friday to Sunday evening and the Festival Finale.

Open air stage in the middle of the track area between the Black Diamond Marquee and The Shed venue. Enjoy a food, coffee and other refreshments while watching dance, street theatre, circus and the passing crowd.

This is upstairs in the Grandstand building and is used from Thursday lunchtime to Sunday evening. There will be concerts, workshops and Folk Club type concerts. It is also the venue for the world famous Tripe Dinner and Lunch Mediterranean Style!

Slacky Flat Bar Concerts

Show Pavilion

A building under the Grandstand that can seat up to 500 persons. It forms part of the Festival Bar area. It hosts many ‘folk pub’ style performers. It is used on Thursday evening for the Opening Charity Concert and then from Friday evening to Sunday evening. The Bar stocks a number of Coopers Beers, wines, cider and soft drinks.

Concerts, Workshops This is a building behind the Grandstand and can seat up to 150 persons. It will be used from Friday morning to Sunday evening. It is the venue for the Poets Breakfast events – BYO breakfast and a poem.
