Welcome to number three This will be our third Folk by the Sea Festival here in Kiama. This year you might notice it is early in September- this was because there was a logistical problem with venues. Next year we hope to move it back later in the month when the days are a tad longer and the weather slightly warmer. Last year proved a resounding success and we have tried to keep to that formula without letting it grow too big. Despite its small size it oozes quality and we have performers from most states and territories of Australia. This year we have the generous support of Kiama Bowling Club and when the sun sets, and the chill winds blow in Hindmarsh Park we will adjourn there for our final warm and cosy Sunday night concerts. The Festival has something on over the three days, though the main focus remains on the Saturday. Friday night, though still being Dance Night in the Uniting Church, has blossomed into a major concert night with almost all the major acts playing in the four venues. The major free concert in Hindmarsh Park on Sunday fleshes out the programme. Being conducted by the Illawarra Folk Club, Folk by the Sea is naturally, like all our activities, run by volunteers and is a wonderful taster festival for our January, Illawarra Folk Festival at Bulli, the largest in NSW. So I’d like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and committee and club members who have come together to make the Festival possible. Thanks again to the people of Kiama, the Rugby Club, the Bowling Club, our fiddle playing politician Gareth Ward and especially Kiama Council for supporting us, not only financially, but also in spirit. We’ve another great line-up of artists and as I predicted, quite accurately it seems, Folk Festivals are addictive and Folk by the Sea is no exception. Folk by the Sea is an intimate festival featuring the sounds of folk, world, roots, Celtic, bluegrass and gypsy music in 70 concerts over 3 days in the picturesque seaside town of Kiama, famous for its blowhole. The festival is a combination of ticket only entry, Friday and Saturday and a free day of local folk artists on Sunday. It is a great pleasure to welcome the 2015 Folk by the Sea festival to our Municipality.
On behalf of the Kiama community, my warmest welcome to you to the Folk by the Sea festival in Kiama.
Here we are again starting our 3rd Folk by the Sea Festival in our beautiful town of Kiama. No folk festival is possible without musicians and sound technicians but it is the volunteers who help to hold the whole thing together. Thank you one and all for your generosity in giving of your time and energy to make this festival a success.
Every year, during the month of September, the sound of folk music illuminates Kiama and our town becomes a focal point for folk music devotees from all over the world. The 2015 festival will offer both locals and visitors a packed line-up of talented performers in a variety of local restaurants, parks, cafes and Kiama Pavilion. This year, the Festival will feature 45 acts and over 70 performers from the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, along with Aussie talent. The headline act will be the talented musician, Christine Anu. The Festival will provide another great weekend in Kiama with a variety of music, song and dance. Once again, Kiama Council is delighted to be a major sponsor and congratulate the Illawarra Folk Club and the organising committee for the effort, time and passion they put into each and every event. The Festival is a tribute to this communitybased organisation’s enthusiasm for music.
Our region is blessed with a depth and breadth of talent and I look forward to seeing the streets of Kiama bustling with visitors and locals alike enjoying everything that folk music and culture has to offer. Festival help guide This may be your first folk festival, so here’s some idea about what to do. §§ Buy your pass on-line to save you money and time. §§ Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with 2 Day Festival Passes. §§ If you’re driving to the festival then make your way to the Kiama Showground Pavilion §§ If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main entry gate and head for the Festival Office in the Kiama Showground Pavilion. §§ Make sure you get a full programme when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your map to the venues, performers and general information. §§ Grab a refreshment and study the program to decide who you want to see and whenor just take pot luck! Having a highlighterpen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. §§ Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind! Chances are you won’t know too many of the acts. Just walk the site! You’ll discover music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see move onto another venue. §§ At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians will be up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions! §§ Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow festival goers when leaving!

The Festival runs entirely on volunteers who appreciate a helping hand and the odd thank you! If you can also volunteer a few hours work then please see the wonderful folk in the Festival Office.
FESTIVAL BAR
The Festival organises its own bar and the proceeds help keep ticket prices down. Please patronise it but do drink sensibly! The bar is conducted strictly according to licensing regulations, ie under-aged and intoxicated persons will not be served and no alcohol is to be taken inside or outside licensed areas. CAMPING
Many festival goers camp in the grounds around the Showground and do so for the duration of the Festival. They all quickly settle into the relaxed village atmosphere and musical environment. §§ Please no campfires or pets. §§ There is to be a minimum of 2.5 metres between tents. §§ Please recycle waste where possible. §§ Children and youth who are camping must be accompanied by a responsible camping adult. §§ Please do not leave any valuables in cars or tents.

Festival First Aid staff will be wearing a Green vest. The Festival First Aid room is in the lower level of The Pavilion at the Surf Beach (southern) end. If the First Aid room is not attended please contact a Festival staff member in a green, red or blue vest.
There are hot water showers available in the Rugby Club building. Please conserve water and keep your showers short.
LATE NIGHT PARTYING
A noise curfew will apply to all camping areas after 10pm. Anyone wishing to session on can go to the Pavilion. Please keep all sessions inside the building. Please be courteous of other campers and festival neighbours.

SMOKE FREE FESTIVAL Folk by the Sea is a Smoke Free Festival. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the Festival site, including camping areas.
The Festival aims to provide a safe environment for families. Parents and guardians are responsible for their children at all times.

ANA OTERO FLAMENCO DANCERS
Ana Otero is one of Australia`s foremost recognised dancer/teacher/choreographers. Having performed internationally as well as nationally, her experience is second to none, with much of her study done in Spain. Her dance troupe is dedicated to learning and performing and is the only traditional flamenco troupe in the Illawarra! SUN 1.50-2.10pm Hindmarsh Park
BOB McINNES
Bob McInnes grows proteas next to the Illawarra Fly but his real claim to fame is that he is probably the best Scottish fiddler in the state. An ex member of the larrikins and many famous bush bands he will be leading a fiddling session on the verandah on Saturday and he has an acute sense of humour so you’ll probably get a laugh as well. Christine Anu is regarded as one of Australia’s most celebrated Indigenous entertainers across music, film, television and theatre. 2015 marks 20 years since her iconic debut album STYLIN’ UP was released. This year Christne has released a new live album that pays homage to the songs and the album that started her illustrious music career. Andrew and Carole live near Swansea, Old South Wales, UK. Andrew plays Crane Duet concertina; Carole the cornamuse, forerunner of the oboe. THE BLOWHOLE BUSKERS
The Blowhole Buskers, Kiama’s first ukulele group, have been enjoying themselves and bringing entertainment around the town for over three years. Most of the layers who have joined had never played a musical instrument before and were very apprehensive about doing gigs in public. Doux Manouche perform a lively and entertaining style of gypsy jazz reminiscent of the great jazz days gone. Influenced by gypsy greats Django Rhinehardt and Stochelo Rosenberg, this talented young trio are already gaining wide support and admiration from audiences
Garry started singing old bush ballads in Brisbane in the late 1950’s and helped form the Moreton Bay Bushwackers”. In 1961 he formed “The Wayfarers” and was employed at the Primitif Coffee Lounge. The Humphreys is a new band of fun-loving fellows. Steve McClure (guitar), Richard Coterill (double bass), Claudio Iacono (mandolin) and Humph David D Bear De Santi (accordion) create a fusion of blues, folk and trad. The Hillbilly Goats hail from FAR NTH QLD and have been Raisin’ a Ruckus all over the festival scene for the last 4 years. WELCOME TO COUNTRY & OFFICIAL OPENING The festival is honoured, to be welcomed by Wadi Wadi elder Joyce Donovan from Gerringong. Joyce was the 2008 Australian of the year NSW local hero and has been honoured by her own Wadi Wadi elders for her outstanding indigenous social justice and human rights work. Russ Churcher hails from the mid-north-coast and is a singer/songwriter/parodist/poet/ comedian and one of the few performers who have attended every Folk by the Sea that’s been held. RYEBUCK NOVA AND THE EXPERIENCE
The infectious indie-folk outfit Nova and the Experience are making waves across Australia as well as the US through their relentless touring and airplay support. The band who have recently signed to Murphy Rights Management (Chris Murphy) and Universal are back in the studio this April and May to record their latest single with renowned producer Jean Paul-Fung (JP) which will be released in July 2015. THE RHYMER FROM RYDE
The “Rhymer from Ryde’s” Bush poetry is 98% Fat free, low in salt, good for your cholesterol and best enjoyed whilst sitting down. Taken internally, it will induce convulsions (of laughter) followed by a feeling of satisfaction and well being.
Ryebuck was formed in 1978 and is Sydney’s longest running bush band. They are also Australia’s first contra dance band, as Pastrami on Ryebuck. Caller Julie Bishop has been dancing since 1977 and has been called Australia’s Queen of Contra. SAT 7-9pm Uniting Church Hall

Rosas Flamencas dances the art form of flamenco. These fiery, traditional and contemporary flamenco dances are inspired by the passions and music of the gypsies of Andalucia. Artistic Director, Rodolfa has had a long career as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. Rosas Flamencas lights the emotions of these dynamic, wild dances with a mesmerising style.

Steve Wilson-The Man With The Concertina performs an eclectic repertoire of folk and beyond to include original compositions and covers of popular songs. His passion for the concertina is infusing and his performance certainly entertaining. As well, in the guise of Bluey Bones, The Jolly Swagman, he delights the young’ns with some classic Aussie children’s songs and bush yarns and gets the kids involved with sing-a-longs and percussion, games and fun stuff.
The Tinkers specialise in performing traditional Irish acoustic music. Rebel songs, reels, jigs, ballads, hornpipes, polkas. We have played many gigs recently including the MONA Museum in Hobart, Marrickville Cultural Festival, Nolan on Lovel Gallery Katoomba, Joadja Winery Berrima, Kelly’s Newtown, Penrith Panthers, Chado Hobart, The Irish Society Ceilidh Wollongong, The Lark Distillery Hobart. We Came for Dinosaurs. and were bitterly disappointed. Because dinosaurs are extinct. Unlike our music, which is fresh and all about living. Not long hatched from the incubator of university, Georgia (vocals and keyboard), Jack (guitar) and Chris (drums/cajon) are taking their first steps in the acoustic music scene having performed here last year and a few other folk festivals around NSW. They are gigging and seeing how their soulful/insightful/thoughtful (choose one or all?) originals might stop and make you listen, groove for a while, and help you along your way. Illawarra Folk Club
Festival Food Guide
The Illawarra Folk Club is celebrating its 36th year of existence. Formed in 1979, it is a ‘not for profit’ incorporated organisation dedicated to the presentation and preservation of our folklore and heritage in both its historical and evolving forms. Music, story telling, singing, poetry, collecting and dancing are all part of its activities and it has been running two concerts per month during all this time. Concerts are generally held on the first Friday and third Saturdays of the month at the Wollongong City Diggers Club, though sometimes special concerts are also held at the Wongawilli Hall. More recently it also presented the Folk Stage at the 2012 Viva La Gong festival and a series of Lunchtime Concerts at the Wollongong Art Gallery. It has produced a monthly newsletter for the past 35 years. The Club has provided support to a number of local artist members who have produced recordings. It has also assisted in providing folk performers to many community and charity events in the Illawarra. As well as providing an outlet for local artists it brings many acclaimed artist from interstate and overseas. Since 1985 the Club has presented the Illawarra Folk Festival once in Wilton, 20 times in the village of Jamberoo and now 9 times in Bulli during January. The festival has grown from a humble beginning to being recognised as one of Australia’s premiere folk festivals and the biggest in NSW. It is also the largest continuing festival in Australia to be run entirely by volunteers. The Festival is a sub-committee of the Folk Club. It meets once month during the year and more often as the festival approaches. Since 2005 the Club has also presented a smaller one day festival at the Jamberoo Valley Lodge. In 2013 this event was moved to Kiama and has expanded to an event held over three days called Folk by the Sea. Seven Mile Beach is a water lover’s paradise. Here you’ll find surf camps, paddle boarding, diving, wind surfing, fishing….the neat flat waves are ideal for kids & learners of all sorts. One of Australia’s best known phenomena’s is the Kiama Blowhole and the iconic Lighthouse catching the magnificent views, located on Blowhole Point Road. It’s the ocean edge that is perhaps Kiama’s biggest draw card. The harbour is nestled in the town centre and is home to many of our local tour attractions; you can take a charter boat and experience the thrill of catching your own fish, or perhaps take in a little whale watching. Heading back to the north of Kiama CBD, you will find the tranquil town of Minnamurra and Bombo Beach. A favourite location for boat fishermen heading out the open sea, kayaks and canoes, snorkelers , divers and lovers of fun in the sun. Beautiful country lanes will lead you into Jamberoo town, then only a short drive to the magical Minnamurra Falls and rainforest in the Budderoo National Park, Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk and the awesome Jamberoo Action Park, the largest water themed fun park in NSW. You can take in our whole seaside region from Minnamurra to Werri Beach by taking the Kiama Coast Walk wandering past headlands, rivers, Kiama town centre up to the Blowhole point then on towards the Little Blowhole passing more beaches & bays before winding up at Werri Beach.

Folk by the Sea is a new intimate event featuring the sounds of folk, world, roots, Celtic, bluegrass and gypsy music over 3 days in the picturesque seaside town of Kiama, famous for its blowhole. The event is a combination of ticket only entry, Friday and Saturday at the Kiama Showground and a free day of local folk artists on the Sunday at Hindmarsh Park and Kiama Bowling Club. The 3rd Folk by the Sea at Kiama is presented by volunteers from the Illawarra Folk Club Inc. who present regular folk music concerts and the world famous Illawarra Folk Festival.
