Welcome to number four This is the fourth festival that the Illawarra Folk Club has held down here by the sea in beautiful Kiama and, of course, with our usual confidence we are predicting it to be our best one yet. At the risk of being political (heaven forbid that we should ever be such) we are mightily pleased that our major sponsor, Kiama Council, remains intact, after very serious attempts to merge it with the Shoalhaven. The council continues to be the beacon in what is the cultural hub of the South Coast. Last year proved a great success despite the fact that we had to hold it three weeks earlier (and hence a little colder) than normal. So successful in fact that we have added a new venue - the Anglican Church. Our thanks go to the church for allowing us to use this fine facility. We are still however keeping the Festival within close boundaries to maintain it as an intimate, participatory and quality event. Bigger is not always beautiful. Our festival is now on the international music map and this year we have four international acts ranging from the Haywood Billy Goats from the USA (who will be re-introducing square dancing to Kiama), Martin Wyndham-Read and Jez Lowe from the UK and Kenta Hayashi from Japan. Some highlights include the acclaimed Simon and Garfunkel show that has been touring theatres in Australia for the last 12 months, a special concert for refugees run by Melbourne singer Celine Yap (Little Foot) and with many of the Festival performers contributing, humorous and parody concerts, lots of poetry and singalongs and a streamed concert through VOX FM that will go around the world. Our free concert in Hindmarsh Park on Sunday remains a feature as does our Sunday night in the Kiama Bowling Club and we thank the Club for their continued support. Our festival is conducted entirely by volunteers and to all of them it is a big thank you. It’s also a big thank you to our organising committee, especially Rod and Judy Cork, Bruce and Robyn Jackson, David De Santi, Graeme Morrison, Peter Davis and Steve McClure. Thanks again to the people of Kiama, the Rugby Club, the Kiama Bowling Club, both the Anglican and Uniting Churches, our fiddle playing Member for Kiama, Gareth Ward and especially Kiama Council for its support, not only financially but in spirit. Be careful if you come because Folk by the Sea is addictive and like good red wine we get better every year. Russell Hannah (Sir Bigruss) OAM President, Illawarra Folk Club

FROM THE FESTIVAL CO-ORDINATORS Welcome to the fourth Folk by the Sea festival. This year we have slightly increased the size of the festival by adding a new venue, the Point Ministry Centre at the Kiama Anglican Church.

This site adjoins the Showground site so as well as giving us a great new venue it is located in the perfect place for us. The views from the verandah at the venue are pretty spectacular as well. We are really fortunate to again have so much support from the Kiama community, including Kiama Council. We are especially glad that Kiama Council has survived the NSW Government amalgamation process and is in a position to continue their support of this Festival. A folk festival is always made up of musicians, sound technicians, volunteers and audience. Many of you have come from afar including our international musicians. Wherever you have come from, welcome to the beautiful town of Kiama and our fourth Folk by the Sea festival. The size of the festival means that there is enough variety to excite, but it is small enough to see most of the acts. While you are here, take time to walk around the town and enjoy it. Any festival is a product of the organisation behind it. In this case that organisation is the Illawarra Folk Club who continues to keep our folk traditions alive with this festival, our larger festival at Bulli and our regular events around the Illawarra. . Rod and Judy Cork Festival Co-ordinators

FROM THE MAYOR

Welcome to Folk by the Sea. From 23 to 25 September 2016, Kiama Municipality welcomes back the Illawarra Folk Club’s famous Folk by the Sea and I am delighted to extend a civic welcome for such a renowned event. The festival continues to grow in strength and reputation each year and our residents and visitors look forward to the 4th such celebration of folk, world, roots, celtic, bluegrass and gypsy music held in Kiama. We are delighted the Illawarra Folk Club has chosen Kiama as its venue again this year and look forward to working with the organisers and volunteers to make sure it is again a roaring success. Council is proud to be a 2016 sponser of the event. I understand there will be more than 50 acts from all over Australia performing in a large number of venues over that weekend and I know each venue will be well supported. What a great showcase for the Illawarra folk music scene!

FROM THE MEMBER FOR KIAMA On behalf of the Kiama community, my warmest welcome to you to the Folk by the Sea festival in Kiama.

Our region is blessed with a depth and breadth of talent and I look forward to seeing the streets of Kiama bustling with visitors and locals alike enjoying everything that folk music and culture has to offer. If you are visiting Kiama, I sincerely hope you enjoy the festival, as well as everything our town and region has to offer. If you are a local, I hope that you enjoy this wonderful festival that gets better every single year. Once again, my warmest welcome to you and I hope that you enjoy the festival in addition to the many treasures Kiama has to offer. Gareth Ward MP Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier – Illawarra and South Coast Member for Kiama

I want to extend Council’s congratulations to the organizing committee for the wonderful work they put into the event and also commend the many volunteers who assist over the 3 days and nights to make sure the festival goes smoothly. From the opening family bush dance on Friday 23 September to the free folk concert in Hindmarsh Park on Sunday 25 September (and thereafter at the Kiama Bowling Club) there is something for everyone in this festival. I have much pleasure in extending a welcome on behalf of our community to the Folk by the Sea featival and invite the many residents and visitors who will attend to enjoy our beautiful seaside municipality and its many charms. Illawarra Folk Club The Illawarra Folk Club is celebrating its 37th year of existence. Formed in 1979, it is a ‘not for profit’ incorporated organisation dedicated to the presentation and preservation of our folklore and heritage in both its historical and evolving forms. Music, story telling, singing, poetry, collecting and dancing are all part of its activities and it has been running two concerts per month during all this time. Concerts are generally held on the first Friday and third Saturdays of the month at the Wollongong City Diggers Club, though sometimes special concerts are also held at the Wongawilli Hall. The Club has provided support to a number of local artist members who have produced recordings. It has also assisted in providing folk performers to many community and charity events in the Illawarra. As well as providing an outlet for local artists it brings many acclaimed artist from interstate and overseas. Since 1985 the Club has presented the Illawarra Folk Festival once in Wilton, 20 times in the village of Jamberoo and now 11 times in Bulli during January. The festival has grown from a humble beginning to being recognised as one of Australia’s premiere folk festivals and the biggest in NSW. It is also the largest continuing festival in Australia to be run entirely by volunteers. The Festival is a sub-committee of the Folk Club. It meets once month during the year and more often as the festival approaches. Since 2005 the Club has also presented a smaller one day festival at the Jamberoo Valley Lodge. In 2013 this event was moved to Kiama and has expanded to an event held over three days called Folk by the Sea.

Picturesque Kiama! When you first arrive in our beautiful region you are captured by the picturesque rolling hills, the serenity of our beaches and panoramic views. Kiama is simply one of the most delightful places in existence with a year round sense of holiday ease. A perfect smattering of eateries, beautiful shops including Australia’s Largest Independent Surf Shop, markets, wineries and a large & sweeping beach home to serious surfers, competitions and sand castle tournaments. Seven Mile Beach is a water lover’s paradise. Here you’ll find surf camps, paddle boarding, diving, wind surfing, fishing….the neat flat waves are ideal for kids & learners of all sorts. One of Australia’s best known phenomena’s is the Kiama Blowhole and the iconic Lighthouse catching the magnificent views, located on Blowhole Point Road. It’s the ocean edge that is perhaps Kiama’s biggest draw card. The harbour is nestled in the town centre and is home to many of our local tour attractions; you can take a charter boat and experience the thrill of catching your own fish, or perhaps take in a little whale watching. Heading back to the north of Kiama CBD, you will find the tranquil town of Minnamurra and Bombo Beach. A favourite location for boat fishermen heading out the open sea, kayaks and canoes, snorkelers , divers and lovers of fun in the sun. Beautiful country lanes will lead you into Jamberoo town, then only a short drive to the magical Minnamurra Falls and rainforest in the Budderoo National Park, Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk and the awesome Jamberoo Action Park, the largest water themed fun park in NSW. You can take in our whole seaside region from Minnamurra to Werri Beach by taking the Kiama Coast Walk wandering past headlands, rivers, Kiama town centre up to the Blowhole point then on towards the Little Blowhole passing more beaches & bays before winding up at Werri Beach.
