Welcome to our Country We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where Aboriginal people have performed age old customs, ceremonies of storytelling, dance, music and celebration. We acknowledge and pay our respect to Elders past and present. And we look to those of the future, for they hold the memories, traditions and hopes of indigenous Australia. They are also an integral part of the Dreaming for a truly united and reconciled Australia. Vic Chapman, local Elder

Welcome to your Festival “Of droughts and flooding rains” So wrote Dorothea McKellar about the vagaries of Australia’s weather and climate in her immortal poem, My Country. If ever there was a microcosm of these weather patterns it could well be our Illawarra Folk Festival over the past two years. In 2012, we had 110mm of rain and flooding. In 2013, we had 47 degree heat and broken air conditioning. It hasn’t deterred our audiences, however, who just keep coming in larger numbers. I think it proves the festival is indeed a resilient beast and how good-natured and determined our ‘folkies’ are. Our hard-working committee (you’ll see their names in the program) started work in midJanuary, 2012. Whereas there is an occasional rest for the wicked, there is no rest for volunteer folk festival organisers and they have been hard at it ever since. The result is the festival you are going to experience between January 17 and 20. It is with a great deal of sadness that I report the passing of two of our great supporters and performers over the years. John Dengate and Len Neary, regular performers at the festival, both died this year. John was the festival’s legend. He was automatically invited every year and turned up and delivered. From our first festival in 1986 until illness curtailed his attendance a couple of years ago, John was a fixture. A magnificent songwriter, social commentator, parodist, poet and supporter of all good things, especially the bar, John will not be forgotten. Check the program for the John Dengate Tribute Concert and the John Dengate Mug for Parody. The mug will hopefully be presented by John’s wife, Dale, who has also donated the trophy which will of course not come empty. Len Neary also performed at our first festival at Jamberoo in 1986. People will remember his combination with the late Chris Kempster, Singing the Songs of Australia and Justice. Len performed at many of our festivals since, in particular a fine workshop on the life of Henry Lawson.

The program - well, it speaks for itself once again, but a couple of things are worthy of mention. This year the themed instrument is the fiddle, so if you see people fiddling about, pay no attention. They are just doing what fiddlers mostly do. There’s no need to go through the 500 performers or the 150 acts as they all are spelt out in this our program booklet. Suffice to say, you know you are on the international folk map when 12 of our acts come from overseas. And the Music Train just keeps getting bigger and more diverse. Last year there were more than 650 people in eight carriages spread over three trains. The train is the brainchild of Brian Dunnett who has once again worked assiduously all year to make it happen. We would like to thank all our sponsors, including Wollongong City Council, whose names and logos appear on all our promotional material and programs. Without them we would be struggling to present the quality artistic event that is the Illawarra Folk Festival. Finally we would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and organisers who give of their time unstintingly to ensure this festival not only remains “the biggest little festival in the world” but also one of the best. Of course no introduction would be complete without thanking, Festival Artistic Director, David De Santi, whose unbelievable energy, commitment and genius keeps the festival just rolling along. We also thank Tania, his wife, whose tolerance and forbearance keeps him just a tiny bit under control. Enjoy your festival, enjoy the music and enjoy this collection of rare talent. Happy folking and see you in January 2015. Russell Hannah (Bigruss) President, Illawarra Folk Club

Despite last year, our festival, like Topsy, continues to grow, however, the essential nature of the festival has not changed. The quality of the acts remains high in every department and we remain “The biggest little festival in the world”. We maintain our intimacy and involvement with our blackboards, sessions, poetry and spoken word. Our venues are relatively small so you are always up front and close. It’s a participatory festival. Walk through the gate and you are not merely an audience member - you are part of it.

Messages From the Lord Mayor Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge that this festival, currently in its 29th year, is well recognised by many as an important and significant cultural annual event within our region that brings people together and promotes friendliness, participation and having a good time with new and old friends. Our region is diverse in its people, activities and culture. Equally so, this 4 day festival in January is also diverse and culturally enriching. The program spreads across venues, 400 concerts and events with 150 international, national and local acts. With outstanding performers such as Archie Roach, The Beez from Germany, Afenginn – a Danish five piece band and Indigenous artists – Shellie Morris and Glenn Skuthorpe are amongst many others heading up the list of outstanding international and Australian artists this event will be second to none. The Youth folk program returns with Youth Traditions Awards encouraging traditional folk music and 11th Folk Music School with 41 workshops over 2 days . Open to all ages with sessions on the feature instrument – the fiddle. Transport has been arranged for you, the Green Music Train is back – 6 carriages from Sydney to Bulli. Leave the car at home and have the festival start when you get on the train! The event also provides many local performers with their first opportunity to play before a large and diverse audience. Over the 4 days of the event, The Illawarra Folk Festival attracts over 9,500 visitors and generates approximately $1.2M into our local economy. This is certainly a key signature event in our local tourism calendar and Wollongong City Council is very proud to be launching and supporting this event. On behalf of Wollongong City Council, it is with great pleasure I support the 2014 Illawarra Folk Festival Program. Clr Gordon Bradbery Oam Lord Mayor, City of Wollongong

From the Minister for Music and Merriment When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground, you enter a new world – a global village - and leave the everyday behind. You enter a world of inspiration, vision, colour, creativity, harmony and community spirit - a utopia we could wish could last all year. It continues to be a privilege to be involved in a truly unique and multi-award-winning celebration of Australian and world folk culture and heritage in the Illawarra. Over the years the Illawarra Folk Festival has been a fine ambassador for Australia to the many visitors who have discovered folk music and have wanted an insight into Australian culture, history and social celebrations. The festival continues to encourage, nurture and feature our young folk republicans. It is important for them to carry on the tradition and for them to see our more experienced tradition bearers in action. The continuation of the Youth Tradition Awards and the Folk Summer School continue this aim. The festival also continues to support local folk performers and provides an opportunity for them to be showcased.

Thanks again to the amazing effort of the Republic Cabinet (Festival Steering Committee) - Mark Doran, Russell Hannah, Rod Cork, Judy Cork, Bruce Jackson, Robyn Jackson, Graeme Morrison and Neil Rowsell. The fruits of their many hours of labour are on show. And of course, thanks to the hundreds of volunteers, more than 60 sponsors and supporter organisations and 600-plus performers from all over the world and Australia for being part of the celebration. Once again I thank the amazing tolerance and ongoing support of my wife Tania (Minister for Home Affairs) and son Sam (Assistant Minister for M&M) who continue to share our musical journey. There is a great sense of achievement in presenting the festival despite the hundreds of hours of work and the personal sacrifice of family time. I do need to also thank my day job employer, BlueScope, for being tolerant with my passion for many years. We trust all our efforts are appreciated and we value your ongoing support and constructive comment. So string up your fiddles, load up your guitars, blow your trumpets, bang your drum, shout your voice and squeeze your accordion - viva la Folk Republic of Illawarra once again. David De Santi Minister for Music and Merriment (honorary), Folk Republic of Illawarra

HitchHiker’s Guide to the Festival This may be your first folk festival, so here are some ideas about what to do. •

Buy your pass online to save you money and time.

Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with season passes.

If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway to the main entry gate.

If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main entry gate and head for the Festival Office.

Make sure you get a full program when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your map to the venues, performers and general information.

Once you’ve parked the car, head for the Global Green or the bar, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program.

There are 12 venues to choose from. You can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck. Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. However, you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing or impromptu sessions.

Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind. Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site. You’ll discover music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see, move onto another venue.

If all this fails, head for the bar, the Global Green, Tantric Turtle Cafe or the Piazza. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Hint: have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to do.

Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the venues there.

At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians will be up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions.

Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow friends when leaving.

Whats New at the Festival? Here’s a summary of program and venue changes since the last Illawarra Folk Festival for our returning patrons and for the new ones - enjoy! • There is a new venue – La Petite Grande – a circular circus style venue. It is positioned on the Harness Racing track in front of the main grandstand. • The festival is now a smoke-free music festival, presented in conjunction with The Heart Foundation. Please smoke only on the Designated Areas which are signed. • The Shed venue has been combined with the Youth Folk events and has been positioned in the centre of the showground Piazza area. • The Blackboard venue has moved next to the Grandstand Bar and will be hosted by Tantric Turtle Café. • The Slacky Flat bar stage and venue has been completely overhauled with change of stage location and inclusion of curtains to assist with the sound management. • Youth Traditions Awards return to encourage young folk to play traditional folk music. There are prizes of $800 worth. • Dance zones have been created at the sides of the Black Diamond Marquee, Slacky Flat Bar and Show Pavilion. Look for the signs and markings and feel to free to dance without blocking the view of seated patrons. Please do not relocate positioned chairs from venues. • The Festival Finale will be held in the Slacky Flat Bar venue on Sunday. • The Vegie Patch is a new food area north of the Global Green, ideal for chillin’ out with vegetarian delights.

Community Partnerships The Illawarra Folk Festival is a major community event which has generated more than $85,000 for charities over the past 13 years – and we want to do more. The festival is powered by a group of hard-working volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk who believe in giving back to the community.

2014 Community Partners:

Since 2001, beginning with the major Guinness sponsorship, the festival has supported the NSW Cancer Council, refugee support group SCARF, the Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, the Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church, East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres Disability Services, Scouts groups, the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and the South Coast School for Children with Autism. Over the past seven years in Bulli, through its charity bush dances, festival opening concerts and donations, the festival has given more than $15,000 in cash to the recipient charities. We continue to seek further partnerships with community and charity organisations as well to bolster our volunteer ranks. There are financial and social benefits for these organisations to be involved. So, if you are interested in helping us keep this great festival alive, then please contact us at: info@ illawarrafolkclub.org.au or phone 1300 887 034.

Festival Features In addition to the concerts there are a number of special events throughout the festival. Here’s a summary of some of them.

Feature Fiddle Events

The Fiddle 2014 Theme Instrument Firstly let’s make it clear that the violin and the fiddle are the same instrument! But when a violin is used to play ethnic or folk music, it is generally referred to as a fiddle. The fiddle has four strings, which, in standard tuning, are tuned GDAE and which are played with a bow, generally made of horsehair. Because fiddles are small and therefore readily portable, they long ago became the instrument of choice for many ethnic communities throughout the world. Fiddles travel easily, and therefore were a popular instrument for immigrants for centuries. The fiddle is also a quite loud instrument, considering its size, and therefore worked well as a dance music instrument before electric amplification became possible. In many folk and ethnic music forms, the fiddle is commonly cross–tuned or played in an open tuning, much like a guitar or banjo might be. Open tunings allow a fiddler to play chords while also playing the melody, and therefore get more sound out of the instrument. Source: http://worldmusic.about.com/od/ instruments/p/fiddle.htm

Parody – It’s All Good Fun One of the most used (and most abused) genres is Parody. The troops loved it during wartime because they knew the tunes and changed the words to suit their circumstances (mostly quite rude). The name Louisa Lawson may be familiar to many of us as the mother of poet Henry Lawson. Louisa is also remembered as a writer, poet, newspaper proprietor and suffragist in her own right. Australian Traditions The Alan Scott Memorial The late Alan Scott was one of the giants of the Australian folk music scene. He was a member of the original 1950s Bushwhackers, a great collector of Australian Bush Music and an active member of the Bush Music Club. He was a big supporter of our festival. We had a rule that Alan Scott was to be invited every year and every year he turned up and contributed to the folk scene and the event in many ways. The now regular ‘Australian Traditions’ concert is our tribute to him and is hosted by Jason Roweth and Bob Bolton. Here you’ll capture the best of traditional Australia with Chordeaux, No Such Thing, Bush Music Club, The Raglins, Battlers Ballad, Dave de Hugard, Peter Mace, and Bob Campbell. Lola Wright’s Keg Night “Lola Wright’s Keg Night” is a musical memoir adapted by PP Cranney and Christina Mimmocchi from the autobiography of Lola Wright. It’s a new verbatim play with music based on the passionate life and times of former Illawarra identity, Lola Wright – teacher, activist, performer, wife, mother, lover. For

over forty years, from the 1940s to the 1980s Lola contributed to the Illawarra’s vibrant social history. Whether teaching nursery rhymes to primary students, establishing the South Coast’s first bush band, playing piano at local dances, singing The Red Flag at Miners strikes, or leading a sing–along of The Internationale at one of her infamous Oak Flats Keg Nights, Lola’s passion for music, and social justice, left its mark on all who knew her. This is her story in her own words – and the music that she loved. The great thing is that Lola, who now lives in Morundah, southwest of Narranderra will be coming. Now 87, Lola is making one of her now rare forays back to Wollongong where she will undoubtedly meet up with one of her old kindergarten students, festival Artistic Director, Dave De Santi. Giant’s Leap – An Activist Folksinger’s Memoir is the first book of a planned two part memoir and social history that covers the period from WW2 to the end of the seventies, arguably the most exciting and optimistic period of the 20th Century, when post–war reconstruction and industrialization followed the destruction and human brutality which surfaced in the Second World War and the Holocaust. As a child Bob Campbell remembers gazing from the escarpment of Giants Leap behind his home in Sandy Hollow, down the Hunter Valley towards the coast. That image becomes the metaphor underlying this book; a leap of escape as his imagination took him into the world of his celluloid heroes and later into a world of struggle against social injustice. The Great Woolly Yarns Competition

‘Father’ John O’Brien with Noel Stallard We all grew up with the Irish/Australian poems like Tangmalangaloo and Said Hanrahan (the ultimate pessimist). Written of course by John O’Brien whose real persona was Father P J Hartigan, the parish priest at Narrandera. Well, we are indeed privileged to have the good father at our festival. Not in person of course – he passed on to his reward many a year ago – but in the form of Noel Stallard, the organizer of the John O’Brien Festival at Narrandera each year. You should not miss Noel’s show if you have a millimetre of Irish blood in you. SUN 3:30pm Show Pavilion

THANK YOU! Hi everyone, Welcome to the 2014 Illawarra Folk Festival. An excellent programme has been put together by our programming committee for your enjoyment. So, let the fun begin! Whilst enjoying the festival, please keep in mind that our festival is the culmination of a year of planning and organising by our steering committee and other dedicated individuals. They are all volunteers, and the festival would not be possible without their efforts. It is very rewarding to be involved with these people and these activities, and, if you are at all interested in being a part of this in the future, please let one of our festival management team know. These are the people wearing the blue vests. We welcome new faces of all ages. Indeed, we need new people to ensure that our festival benefits from new ideas, and so that our festival has people to take it into the future. Whilst the 2013 festival was very successful, it is always good to look for potential improvements, and we did that with a festival debrief in February. The debriefing session covered all aspects of running the festival, and we have tried to incorporate the good ideas that came out of it. The 2014 festival should be even more successful as a result. The 2014 Festival Organising Committee is listed separately in this publication. These are the people who contribute a huge amount of volunteer hours in leadership roles both throughout the year and during the festival itself. Our festival depends on each of these people as well as the other 300+ volunteers who fill their teams. On your behalf, let me extend a big thank you to all our volunteers. Let’s enjoy the 2014 version of our festival, and hope that we are blessed with good weather throughout.

Illawarra Folk Club & Illawarra Folk Festival The Illawarra Folk Club was formed in 1979 and has conducted fortnightly concerts on and off in the Wollongong/Illawarra region ever since. Since 1985 the Club has presented the Illawarra Folk Festival 20 times in the village of Jamberoo and 7 times in Bulli. The festival has grown from a humble beginning to being recognised as one of Australia’s premiere folk festivals and the biggest in NSW. The Illawarra Folk Club is a community based incorporated association dedicated to the preservation, performance and presentation of folklore in all its various forms. The members include many local folk musicians, dancers, poets and storytellers. The Club holds regular concerts and events at venues around the Illawarra area. The Festival is a sub-committee of the Folk Club with around 40 members. It meets once month during the year and more often as the festival approaches. If you are interested in helping with the Folk Club or Festival then contact us by calling 1300 887 034 or email info@illawarrafolkclub.org.au The Club has provided support to a number of local artist members who have produced recordings. It has also assisted in providing folk performers to many community and charity events in the Illawarra. It has produced a monthly newsletter for the past 30 years. You can join the Club and receive discounts to the regular concerts. Folk Club membership forms are available from the website and the Festival Reception.
