WELCOME TO OUR COUNTRY We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where Aboriginal people have performed age old customs, ceremonies of storytelling, dance, music and celebration. We acknowledge and pay our respect to Elders past and present. And we look to those of the future, for they hold the memories, traditions and hopes of indigenous Australia. They are also an integral part of the Dreaming for a truly united and reconciled Australia. Vic Chapman, local elder
WELCOME TO OUR PEARL PARTY Who would ever have thought when we kicked off this festival and I wrote the first welcome back in 1986 that I’d still be writing one thirty years on. But I am, which I think makes me somewhat old or somewhat obsessive or maybe a little of both. It’s ironic that after each festival you sit around, exhausted and vow you’ll never put yourself through the torture of producing ‘yet another festival’. Then a few days later you start planning for the next one. You can’t help but love ‘em and hence our 30th anniversary has arrived. Our hard working committee (you’ll see their names in the programme) started work in mid January 2014. Whereas there is an occasional rest for the wicked, there is no rest for volunteer folk festival organisers and they have been hard at it ever since. The result is the festival that you are going to experience. Even though our festival continues to grow, its essential nature has not changed. The quality of the acts remains high in every department and we remain ‘The Biggest Little Festival in the World.’ We maintain our intimacy and involvement with our blackboards, sessions, poetry and spoken word. Our venues are relatively small so you are always up front and close and what you see is what you get. Every year folk say it looks our best programme yet - and who am I to argue with that. This year the themed instrument is the guitar, probably the instrument most favoured by ‘folkies’ and our logo is the Reg Mombassa created guitar icon (Riff we call it) and you will find some very fine guitar players in concerts over the weekend. There is a large overseas contingent as well as our old friends Ted Egan and Eric Bogle who gave the festival so much impetus when they first came in 1988. Our festival is now well and truly on the international folk map. It’s good to see the Folk School and Music Train continue. Thanks to the railways for their support and ensuring all trains stop at Bulli over the festival period. Over 600 people came to the festival by train last year and we hope that number continues to grow and our carbon footprint continues to shrink. We would like to thank all our sponsors whose names and logos appear on the back page. Without them we would be struggling to present the quality artistic event that is the Illawarra Folk Festival. In particular, Wollongong City Council and Destinations Wollongong has also been a great and active supporter so it’s thanks to them. I won’t mention names as I’d be sure to leave some out (and there are about 400 of them) but I’d would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and organisers who give of their time unstintingly to ensure that this festival not only remains “The Biggest Little Festival in The World” but also one of the best. Of course no introduction would be complete without thanking the Festival Artistic Director for the past 20 years, David De Santi, whose unbelievable energy, commitment and genius keeps the festival just ‘rolling along’. As I said this is our Pearl Anniversary. Over the years the site may have changed the date may have changed but the quality remains high. Enjoy the Festival, enjoy the music and enjoy this collection of rare talent. Happy folking and see you in January 2016. Russell Hannah OAM (Bigruss) President, Illawarra Folk Club

Project & Operations Director, Illawarra Folk Festival Hi everyone, Welcome to the 2015 Illawarra Folk Festival - our 30th or “pearl anniversary” festival. Our programming committee has put together an excellent programme of entertainment for us which includes many artists who have been involved in our festivals throughout the thirty years. Whilst we are enjoying these performances, please keep in mind that our festival can only happen because of the contributions of some 400 volunteers. Special mention must be made of the 2015 Festival Organising Committee which is listed separately in this publication. These are the people who contribute a huge amount of volunteer hours in leadership roles both throughout the year and during the festival itself. We actually start organising the next festival shortly after the previous festival has finished, and try to incorporate any good ideas which have come from the running of the previous festival. It is fun to be a volunteer for the Illawarra Folk festival in any capacity, and be part of a large team of people which puts together something so very special. If you think you may be interested in volunteering for future festivals, please have a word to one of our volunteers wearing a blue vest.
Let me extend a huge thank you to all our volunteers. Let’s enjoy the pearl anniversary of our festival, and hope that we are blessed with This is certainly a key signature event in our local good weather throughout. tourism calendar and Wollongong City Council Neil Rowsell is very proud to be launching and supporting this event. On behalf of Wollongong City Council, it is with great pleasure to again support the 2015 Illawarra Folk Festival Program. Clr Gordon Bradbery OAM

From the Artistic Director When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground, you enter a peaceful and musical global village where you can leave your everyday cares behind at the gates. You enter a world of inspiration, vision, colour, creativity, harmony and community spirit - a utopia we wish could last all year. To achieve this of course requires quite a huge team effort and thanks to a core of about 40 devoted volunteers the 30th Pearl Anniversary Illawarra Folk Festival will be one great party, a Pearl Party to be exact! Pearls are the 2015 theme, and we’re going to make sure you’re a part of it! So collect your Mardi Gras beads at the gate, don your best dress-ups for Friday night’s Pearl Ball, play at the Pearl Jam and give your best pearl song an airing at the Pearl Song Swap! But beware the resident Pearl Police and King and Queen of Pearl, who’ll be prowling the show grounds for non-pearliness! What else is new? Well, if you get this program in time you will hopefully be able to enjoy our major prefestival fringe event – Honk! Oz, see pages 56-59. It’s a free street music festival created by members of the Illawarra Folk Club and supported by The Con Artists. If you miss it this year, then make it a date for 2016. It’s a great way to get into the folk festival party spirit! We’ve added a new venue to help with hosting more intimate concerts and sessions and it’s called The Odeon, after the traditional Greek/Roman building for hosting cultural events. We’ve introduced Songwriter Circles – a much more intimate way to indulge in the creative work from some amazing songwriters. We’ve increased the Youth folk content with the introduction of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra. It should be a great way for young folk musicians from all over the country to share and play their love of folk music. We’re also continuing the Youth Tradition Awards and the Youth Concerts as well as the wonderful Folk School to nurture and develop our young performers. All this is part of the monster cultural event the festival has become. Here’s a few statistics – 180 acts from all over the world and Australia with 89 of them

local, around 800 performers, 540 concerts / dances / sessions / workshops and 13 venues. Despite the scale of the festival we still manage to have ways to participate for all – playing music, singing, dancing, reciting, telling yarns and socialising! On this occasion of the 30th festival and my 20th as Artistic Director it is opportune to contemplate the development of the festival and the thousands of hours spent to create them. It’s crazy but it always seems so worthwhile seeing and enjoying the unique gatherings we have created. I have to confess another motive – being able to play music at the festival in as many bands as possible. Although it does seem like a lot of trouble to get a gig! And now for the thank you. Apart from the artistic direction and programming I have been involved in the creation of the graphics, imagery, marketing, media, website development, sponsorship, community partnerships, Thursday charity day, folk school, youth program, merchandise, raffle, visual enhancement, venue setup, sound production, site planning, festival choir and orchestra, Honk! Oz and so need to thank a swag of people. Thanks to Russell Hannah and Graeme Morrison with artist selection and programming. Thanks also to Graeme for coordinating the festival CD. Thanks to Anne Proudlove, Robyn Jackson, Suzi Wakefield and Tania De Santi with artist management, ticketing and accommodation. Thanks to Tarcita Heaven, Steve McClure and Robyn Jackson with the Community Partnership scheme. Thanks to Nick Hartgerink for his media and publicity skills. Thanks to Pedro Altuna and Sally Harris for all their amazing creativity and inspiration with our imagery, website, marketing, promotion and graphics. Thanks to Graeme Morrison, Liz and John Aitken, Heidi Vestergaard, Javier Valledor, Kim Rudner, Peter O’Neill, Aaron Burton and Jessica Millman for their photography and video capture of the festival. Thanks to Nicole Murray, John Thompson, Liz Flynn, Sally Harris and Lou Robson for being gorgeous Pearl Party imagery models, thanks to Mal Lloyd for the photography and thanks to Sally Harris for designing
and managing the whole shebang. Thanks to Brianna Smith and Anne Cantle for assistance with sponsorship. Thanks to Ann Lehmann for ongoing leadership with the Folk School. Thanks to the site planning and construction team of Dan Kuit, Simon Leamon, Steve McClure, Rod Cork, Judy Cork, Tom O’Toole, Neil Rowsell, Phil Jones and Tony Foley. Thanks to Robyn and Bruce Jackson for being so supportive on all fronts! Thanks to the amazing site artistic enhancement team of Lana Patrin, Bec O’Shea, Amanda Buckland, Virginia Settre and Michelle Bennett. Thanks to David Rooney and Lotte Latukefu with direction of the festival parades, choir and orchestra and of course the Honk! Oz festival. Thanks to Steve McClure and Samuel De Santi with assistance with sound and production. Thanks to Anita Larkin, Pedro Altuna, Bec O’Shea, Sylvia McMullen, Gwen Burke, Norm Burke, Tania De Santi and Russell Hannah for helping put the Folk section of the Steel Music City exhibition in place. Thanks to Anita Larkin for the unique festival T-shirt design. I do need to also thank my day gig employer, BlueScope, for being supportive with my organising passion for so many years. And of course thanks to the patience and support of Tania and Samuel De Santi on the home front. A final thank you is to Russell Hannah. We have travelled many roads over the past 27 years since my formal involvement began with the festival. We have had many discussions but always with the view of making the festival a better, personable and community event. There were times we could have headed into a more commercial direction but have always kept the philosophy of inclusiveness at all talent levels and participation at the forefront. Thank you Overly Adventurous Maniac (OAM) and comrade. We trust all our efforts are appreciated and we value your ongoing support and constructive comment. So bow your fiddles, pluck your guitars, blow your trumpets, bang your drum, holler a shanty, squeeze your accordion, dance a tarantella and enjoy The Pearl Party. David De Santi Artistic Director and Minister for Many Other Things
Community Partnerships
The Illawarra Folk Festival is a major community event which has generated more than $90,000 for charities over the past 14 years – and we want to do more. The festival is powered by a group of hardworking volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk who believe in giving back to the community. Since 2001, beginning with the major Guinness sponsorship, the festival has supported the NSW Cancer Council, refugee support group SCARF, the Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, the Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church, East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres Disability Services, Scouts groups, the State
Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and the South Coast School for Children with Autism.
2015 community partners
Over the past seven years in Bulli, through its charity bush dances, festival opening concerts and donations, the festival has given more than $20,000 in cash to the recipient charities.
We continue to seek further partnerships with community and charity organisations as well to bolster our volunteer ranks. There are financial and social benefits for these organisations to be involved. So, if you are interested in helping us keep this great festival alive, then please contact us at: info@illawarrafolkclub.org.au or phone 1300 887 034.

HitchHiker’s Guide to the Pearl Party This may be your first folk festival, so here are some ideas about how to enjoy this year’s Pearl Party. •
Buy your pass online to save you money and time.
•
Make sure you pack summer clothes, your Pearl Ball costume, an umbrella for quick rain-showers, a refillable water bottle and lots of good cheer. Don’t worry if you haven’t brought anything to wear - get yourself a cheap costume from the Scraggs shop in the Slacky Flat Bar.

Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with season passes.
If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway onto Quilkey Place and then to the main entry gate at Bulli Showground. If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main Bulli Showground Gate on Grevillea Park Road entry gate and head for the Festival Office. Make sure you pick up your Mardi Gras beads (or bring your own pearls). Wear them all weekend or you might get a fine from the Pearl Police with those proceeds going to Greenacres Disability Services.
Make sure you get a full program when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your guide to the venues, performers and lots of general information. Alternatively view the Festival Program Live on your phone or device from www.illawarrafolkfestival.com.au/live
Once you’ve parked the car, head for the Global Green or the Festival Bar in the main complex building, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program.
There are 13 venues to choose from. You can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck. Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. However, you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing, shanty singers or impromptu sessions. Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind. Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site. You’ll discover great music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see, move onto another venue. If all this fails, head for the Festival Bar, the Global Green, Tantric Turtle Cafe or the Piazza. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to see and hear. Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the two venues there - The Chapel and Miners Camp. At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians are always up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions. Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow revellers when leaving.

A Greener Festival Waste Reduction The Illawarra Folk Festival is committed to minimising waste and its impact on the environment including the recycling of plastics, glass and cardboard. Our aim is to send no waste to landfill. This is a big task and requires attendees, campers, volunteers, stallholders and performers to work together. There are 3 waste streams at the Festival. Each waste stream has an individual collection bin and is identified by the colour of the bin lid and signage.
Join the Green Army If you are passionate about music and even more passionate about saving our planet come and join the Illawarra Folk Festival’s Green Army! Last year we achieved close to 95% diversion from landfill and this year we want to get over 98% diverted but we NEED YOU to help us do it.
As part of the Green Army your duties will be: Spread the REDUCE and RECYCLE WASTE message around the festival Place signage around the festival Collect and replace the bins at stations Monitor waste input and output to ensure contamination is kept to a minimum. The target is 98% recyclables. Get green and dirty sometimes! Provide 12 hours or more of your time between Thursday and Monday morning of the festival. As part of the Green Army you will receive: A special issue Illawarra Folk Festival Green Army T-Shirt An Illawarra Folk Festival Green Army sun-hat 6 free drinks from the Festival Bar. (General volunteers get 2!) A Season Pass to the Festival Light refreshments from the Volunteer Kitchen Invitations to pre and post festival concerts

BYO H20 Bottle The Illawarra Folk Festival, in its drive to be a ‘greener’ festival, is aiming to be a Disposable Water Bottle Free Festival in 2016. But you can start now by using your own re-usable water bottle or buy one of the festival souvenir bottles (at the Festival Shop) and filling up at the Filtered and Refrigerated Water Trailer stationed on the Harness Track. There will also be other smaller water stations around the festival. With over 10,000 patrons over our festival period we can save a multitude of disposable water bottles being consumed!

The Guitar 20 15 Theme Instrument
2015 is the year of the guitar at the Illawarra Folk Festival! Predominantly, folk guitarists use an acoustic guitar and simple chord progressions and melodies. The fingerpicking style of playing guitar is also strongly associated with folk music. Millions (that’s right, MILLIONS) of acoustic guitars are sold every year around the globe and the appeal just keeps growing! The guitar is a type of chordophone, traditionally constructed from wood and strung with either nylon or steel strings and distinguished from other chordophones by its construction and tuning. The modern guitar was preceded by the lute, the vihuela, the fourcourse Renaissance guitar, and the five-course baroque guitar. A 3,300-year-old stone carving of a Hittite bard playing a stringed instrument is the oldest iconographic representation of a chordophone. This festival features the guitar playing many styles – folk, bluegrass, gypsy, Balkan, Celtic and Blues!

100 Years of the Anzac Tradition Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of Anzac, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. There are a couple of special presentations in honour of the Anzac tradition and Eric Bogle is at the festival, composer of And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda.
The Anzacs - Song & Story Ted Egan and Nerys Evans will present a 75 minute audio-visual presentation The Anzacs 100 Years On In Song and Story consisting of three DVDs and hundreds of stunning images on screen, accompanied by the 20 Songs on Ted’s album “Salute the Heroes”. The Roar of the Crowd
Margaret and Bob Fagon present this fascinating collection of work featuring some of the great musical settings of poems written by members of the Sydney Realist Writers, mostly from the mid1950s to the early 1970s. Australia’s folk heritage rests not only with songs from its gold-rush days or the bush, but includes poems and music produced in our cities and industrial towns. The Sydney Realist Writers often highlighted political struggles that remain largely unwritten in Australia’s history books. This workshop explores the unmistakable Australian accent of these songs, and features the works of Jock Graham, Dorothy Hewett, Merv Lilley and Denis Kevans. SAT 6pm-7pm La Petite Grande

An Illawarra Folk Club member of many years standing Barry passed away in October. Barry was always the first to have his name down for a poem at the breakfast and often ran them. PEARLER The hardest taskmaster in the world must be Dave De Santi. “Write a pome, Blue. Do it quick.” with information scanty. He’s aided and abetted in a most ferocious manner, With Illawarra Folk Club veteran … Russell Bloody Hannah. Dave wants the theme to be the Festival’s Pearl Anniversary. He’s insisting on full detail, and is dismissive of the ‘cursory’. So I’ve done a bit of digging, to celebrate the Pearl, And with a high degree of difficulty, I’m giving it a whirl. It starts off with the Tripe Night. Don’t let that put you off. Some regard tripe as a food … others tend to scoff. I’m still the poet laureate for tripe … I think that’s right. To watch Big Russell stuff it down is not a pretty sight. The music theme this festival, I’m told, is the guitar, I was scared the accordion was going to be the star. Now for a bit of history … it kicked off at Jamberoo, And persisted there for twenty years. But the festival outgrew Jamberoo, and in the year two thousand and five, someone said Bulli. It should be our new home. That’s the site that we should try”. Ten years at Bulli coming up. Thirty years in all, And we’re going to celebrate it with a PEARLER of a ball. We hope the bands will dress up in ‘Mardi Gras’ type style, Wear pearls of course (real or sham), a celebration smile. A ‘PEARLER’ of a festival, that’s what we’re aiming for, With performers and the audiences calling out for more.

A real celebration. ‘Pearl’ for thirty years. The first to get a gong, I reckon, should be the volunteers. Their effort and commitment, carried out in style, Set the tone … even in the grog tent, they went that extra mile.

My memories of the festival, especially Jamberoo, Magical occasions, meeting friends, both old and new. Old friends back to celebrate, Greg Champion, so many, Ted Egan, Eric Bogle, Bernard Carney, Enda Kenny. Just to name a few of them, musicians by the score, Woolly yarns, and poetry, food and dancing, and much more. Those no longer with us, with their lasting contribution. To the festival and its history … memories in profusion. Viv and Vina Sawyer, John Dengate, Alan Scott and Bob MacDonald and his parrot … gone, but not forgotten. The standouts … Wongawilli, longest serving act, Hannah and De Santi, their spirit still intact. Thanks to those who started it, and to those who kept it going, The volunteers, performers, those who kept it growing. Congratulations due to all, who kept the ball in play, We wish you well, and hope you have a ‘PEARLER’ of a day.
Blue the Shearer
30 Years a’ Folkin’ I have always believed that memory is not a continuum but consists of a series of little cameos of incidents that have shaped perceptions of the things that have happened to us and the framework in which we live. To write a 30 year history of the Illawarra Folk Festival would take a large tome, so when I think back over the last thirty years it’s some of the incidents that I remember most which I’ll try and put in here. As one who has been in it from the start I’ve watched it grow from the germ of an idea to the large undertaking that we have today. The Illawarra Folk Club was a mere six years old when we decided that no self- respecting folk club could exist without running a festival. So in 1985 we teamed up with the Bankstown Folk Club and the NSW Folk Federation and dabbled in folk festival organising for the first time. We ran a festival at Wilton which was moderately successful and whetted our appetite to run our own. 30 years down the track and the folk festival is still the IFC’s largest concert. Though our concerts were run at the old Junior Tennis Clubhouse, long since demolished, we wanted a place outside the city’s boundaries that had ambience, some buildings we could use and perhaps a pub. Jamberoo fulfilled all these requirements. As well, the Jamberoo Pub was having Bush Bands every Sunday afternoon, so already there was a ripe climate for folk music. March 1986 was our first festival, unrecognisable in comparison to the giant it is today. It centred round the Youth Hall and the Pub. Such was the impact on the town that I recall a local in the pub saying; “Hey mate! Is there something going on here today?” The conventional wisdom was that we sold 18 tickets and half of these were bought by the Committee. But it was enough to keep us on track for another tilt in 1987. Our numbers doubled albeit from a small base and we attracted our first international act. An Irish couple Rosie Short and Anthony McCartan were passing through on a holiday tour of Oz. They called themselves ‘The
76
Churchfitters’ and asked if they could play. They did and were a great hit- I still have their tape and from time to time play it. But it was 1988, which we declared a BiCentenary free year, that we really hit our straps. We had had both Eric Bogle and Ted Egan, folk superstars, play to packed houses at the folk club throughout the year and the both said they would come to help our fledgling festival out. We realised that we would need something larger than the youth hall. So we hired a large Marquee for $2000 – money of course that we did not have so we had to pre-sell tickets. It was touch and go for a while but we were vindicated when the concert with Ted and Eric attracted 800 punters on the Sunday afternoon. We were now hooked on the festival and, like Topsy, we grew. Emboldened by our success we had John Williamson play to a packed tent in 1989 and the festival was growing yet again. We started using the Marquee on Saturdayand later Friday as well. One of the highlights of our 20 years at Jamberoo was our schoolkids concerts during Friday daytime in the Marquee. Schools from up and down the coast would bus their kids in for a concert that usually involved our most popular artists. The special schools all brought their kids too, many in wheelchairs but all enjoying the music. I always remember Geoff Mack, who wrote I’ve Been Everywhere, having the kids clapping in awe at his linguistic convolutions. And then the international artists started to come. The great Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon from USA, Faith Petric, The Chippolatas, Frankie Armstrong, Andy Irvine, Geraldine Doyle, and I have vivid memories of Roy Bailey getting a standing ovation after playing to a packed house in the marquis. This late eighties, early nineties was a period when Allen Clark and Alison Rowe, who sadly passed away this year, arranged for our Friday Night concert to be broadcast all over regional NSW. Clarkie was the then manager of the Illawarra ABC (2WN) and has often stepped in and MC’d our major concerts. Perhaps one of the more defining moments occurred when our present artistic director,
www.illawarrafolkfestival.com.au
David De Santi, took over the directors role in 1996. He had been involved in the committee since 1989. His energy and vision was a major influence in growing and maintaining a festival that could well have burnt itself out. His longevity in the demanding job is also quite remarkable. The three biggest things in securing the festival was the opening of the bar on the festival site, a large 6 figure grant from Diageo/Guinness obtained by David de Santi and the move from March to September at Jamberoo. In 2005 we decided to move the festival to January at Bulli where we have been for the last 10 years. We have survived tempest where we had to drop the tents one Sunday at last festival in Jamberoo, 2004, flooding at Bulli and a 45 degree heat wave Friday, also at Bulli. We have also had some great exhibitions that have been set up at the Festival. The Peoples Forest was a travelling exhibition on the environment and was opened by Peter Garrett. Similarly we ran an exhibition on the Railway History. A grant from the government’s cultural bodies allowed us to run a much applauded multicultural programme and we expanded into a second marquee. The Spanish in Australia and the Folk Lore of the Pacific Rim, Verandah Music and Australia Remembers were special themes for which the Festival received special cultural grants. For the Spanish in Australia theme we had Al Grassby attend and had a song written about his grandfather by Neil Adam and performed with Felpeyu from Asturias, Spain. And of course there’s the great Gut Busting Tripe Night and Lunch Italian Style that kicks off the festival each year on a Thursday. I think we might be the only Festival in the world that puts on concerts where such delicacies are held. Though the festival has been largely selfsupporting, we have received great support over the years from Bluescope Steel, a sponsor for over 20 years and both the Wollongong City and Kiama Councils. Not only financial but in a morale enhancing way. The last ten years at Bulli have seen the festival grow to such an extent that we now have 13 venues and over 180 acts, 700 performers, 400
volunteers, a working committee of 40 and magnificent and informative web pages. The influx of overseas artists over our time at Bulli has culminated in there being 15 here this year- As well our two ‘founding folkies’ Ted and Eric are also back. It’s an indication that the festival has reached global recognition. We would have liked to have Judy Small, but she flew the coop to become a judge. Whatever changes there has been over the thirty years, we remain true to our original ideals of being a folk festival not just a music festival. We are about participation. When you walk through the gates you are not just a punter, patron or audience, you are a participant. The sessions, the blackboards, the walk up poetry, the dances, the Woolly Yarn Spinning are all part of the ‘Sizzle’ and if we are still around in another 30 years we hope this will still be. We are the largest Australian, could be the world, ongoing folk festival that is run by volunteers. If there are to be tributes paid then it should be to them for without them we wouldn’t be still here. The Festival has provided over 10000 individual performances by over 3000 individual acts over its 30 year lifespan. People probably didn’t know that there were that many Folkies out there! It may be our Pearl Anniversary but we are not putting ’pearls before swine’. We are putting pearls before people who appreciate them and the fact that you are reading this attests to that. I have only skimmed the surface – the exigencies of space prevents more reminiscences and waxing lyrical. See me at the bar and I can reveal a lot more. Have a good one. Comradesirbigruss OAM
