WELCOME TO OUR

WELCOME

It was always going to be hard to come off the back of our highly successful Pearl Anniversary 2015 (30 years) but we reckon we might even surpass it in quality and flair this year. Our hard working committee started work in Mid-January 2015. Whereas there is an occasional rest for the wicked, there is no rest for volunteer folk festival organisers. The result is the festival that you are going to experience is this festival. Our festival continues to grow and the essential nature of the festival has not changed. The quality of the acts remains high in every department and we remain ‘The Biggest Little Folk Festival in the World.’ We maintain our intimacy and involvement with our blackboards, sessions, poetry and spoken word. Our venues are relatively small so you are always up front and close and what you see is what you get.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where Aboriginal people have performed age old customs, ceremonies of storytelling, dance, music and celebration.

31st Celebration

More importantly we remain a ‘Folk Festival.’ We are not just a music festival but we try to maintain the heritage, the culture, the spoken word, the history of our country in all its cultural outpourings. At the same time we recognize that our nature as a society is not static – it never really has been, and we are dedicated to presenting the cultural mix and evolving nature of our Australian Society today. We also believe that a festival should be just that; so that when you walk through the gates you are not just a visitor, you are as much a participant as our best known performers. The program, well it speaks for itself once again, but a couple of things are worthy of mention. This year the themed instrument is the mandolin. One of the important though lesser lights in the musical armoury, though mandolin players will certainly take me to task over that one. It is welcome to performers from all around the world and every state in Australia. Performers from USA, Canada, Scotland, England, New Zealand, Japan, Italy are an indication of just how widely recognised the festival is. Importantly however is that almost one third of our performers are local. We are truly an Illawarra Festival. The Music Train continues to operate with many people opting to come to the festival in a very ‘green’ way. It also helps with alleviating some of our parking problems. Thanks to Brian Dunnett for his involvement this year despite having to do much of it from a hospital bed. Thanks also to Mick Keelan and Sue from the railways for their support and help in coordinating this project. We would like to thank all our sponsors whose names and logos appear on all our promotion material and programs. Without them we would be struggling to present the quality artistic event that is the Illawarra Folk Festival. Wollongong Council has also been a great and active supporter so it’s thanks to them. Thanks to Green Music Australia for coming on board with our no plastic disposable water bottle campaign. I would also like to thank Darren Hull and the GBOTA. Darren is the manager of the greyhound complex. This year Darren has been able to reschedule two dog meetings which has made it so much easier for us to set up and pull down the festival site. Finally we would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and organisers who give of their time unstintingly to ensure that this festival not only remains “The Biggest Little Festival in The World” but also one of the best. Of course no introduction would be complete without thanking, Festival Director, David De Santi whose unbelievable energy, inspiration, commitment and genius keeps the festival just “rolling along’. I don’t like singling people out but Bruce and Robyn Jackson and Rod and Judy Cork have been towers of strength in the organisation over the year. Despite all the work they put in they are often too busy to see much of the entertainment that goes on. Neil Rowsell who is our organisational puppet master (he pulls the strings and brings together all the groups who are working away on the disparate areas of the event) continues to do a marvellous job and has put in many hours of work.

to our Country We acknowledge and pay our respect to Elders past and present. And we look to those of the future, for they hold the memories, traditions and hopes of indigenous Australia. They are also an integral part of the Dreaming for a truly united and reconciled Australia. Vic Chapman, local elder

MESSAGES

Artistic Director When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground you enter a peaceful and musical global village where you can leave your everyday cares behind. You enter a world of inspiration, vision, colour, creativity, harmony and community spirit - a utopia we wish could last all year. To achieve this of course requires quite a huge team effort and thanks to a core of about 40 devoted volunteers which swells to 400 plus the 31st Anniversary Illawarra Folk Festival will be another great celebration. We’ve continued the Pearl Party spirit with Mardi Gras beads essential for everyone! We have purple, green and black ones to collect and you are welcome to bring your own! But beware the resident Pearl Police who’ll be prowling the show grounds for non-mardi-gras-ness! What else is new? Well, if you get this program in
time you will hopefully be able to enjoy our major pre-festival fringe event – Honk! Oz. It’s
a free street music festival in the centre of Wollongong created by members of The Con Artists and the Illawarra Folk Club. It’s a great way to get into the folk festival party spirit! We’ve added a new venue in the Grevillea Park to help with hosting more intimate concerts and sessions and it’s called Café de Rude. It is brought to you by the La Petite Grande folk. The intimate Odeon will return also return after a successful premiering in 2016. We’re proud to continue to support Youth folk with the return of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra. It should be a great way for young folk musicians from all over the country to share and play their love of folk music. We’re also continuing the Youth Tradition Awards and the Youth Concerts as well as the wonderful Folk School to nurture and develop our young performers.

development of the festival and the thousands of hours spent to create them. It’s crazy but it always seems so worthwhile seeing and enjoying these unique gatherings. I have to confess another motive – being able to play music at the festival in as many bands and sessions as possible. However it does seem like a lot of trouble to get a gig! And now for the thank you. Apart from the artistic direction and programming I have been involved
in the creation of the graphics, imagery, marketing, media, website development, sponsorship, community partnerships, Thursday charity day, folk school, youth program, merchandise, raffle, visual enhancement, venue setup, sound production, site planning, Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra, festival choir and orchestra, Honk! Oz and so need to thank a swag of people. Thanks to Russell Hannah and Graeme Morrison
with artist selection and programming. Thanks to Graeme for coordinating the festival CD compilation. Thanks
to Lilli Pang, Robyn Jackson, Cathy and Suzi Wakefield
with artist management, ticketing and accommodation. Thanks to Tarcita Heaven, Suzi Wakefield and Robyn Jackson with the Community Partnership scheme. Thanks to Nick Hartgerink for
his media and publicity skills. Thanks to Pedro Altuna for the amazing creativity and inspiration with our imagery, website, marketing, promotion and graphics. Thanks to Graeme Morrison, Liz and John Aitken, Javier Valledor, Kim Rudner, Peter O’Neill, Aaron Burton, El Cooper, Sam St John and Jessica Millman for their photography and video capture of the festival. Thanks to Bonnie Hittman for assistance with sponsorship. Thanks to Ann Lehmann for ongoing leadership with the Folk School and Youth Tradition Awards.

All this is part of the monster cultural event the festival has become. Here’s a few statistics – 170 acts from all over the world and Australia with 70 of them local, around 800 performers, 540 concerts / dances / sessions / workshops and 14 venues. Despite the scale of the festival we still manage to have ways to participate for all – playing music, singing, dancing, reciting, telling yarns and socialising! On this occasion of the 31st festival and my 21st as Artistic Director it is opportune to contemplate the

Thanks to the site planning and construction team of Simon Leamon (new Construction Manager), Steve McClure, Rod Cork, Judy Cork, Tom O’Toole, Neil Rowsell, Phil Jones, Kevin Donegan, John Spira and Tony Foley. Thanks to Robyn and Bruce Jackson for being so supportive on all fronts! Thanks to the amazing site artistic enhancement team of Lana Patrin, Bec O’Shea, Amanda Buckland and Virginia Settre. Thanks to David Rooney and Lotte Latukefu with direction of the festival parades, choir and orchestra and of course the Honk! Oz festival. Thanks to Dan Kuit for his many years of Construction Manager – he is taking a well earned rest. I do need to also thank my former day gig employer, BlueScope, for being supportive with my organising passion for so many years. A final thank you is to Russell Hannah. We have travelled many roads over the past 28 years since
my formal involvement began with the festival.
We have had many discussions but always with the view of making the festival a better, personable and community event. There were times we could have headed into a more commercial direction but have always kept the philosophy of inclusiveness at all talent levels and participation at the forefront. Thank you Overly Adventurous Maniac (OAM) and comrade. We trust all our efforts are appreciated and we value your ongoing support and constructive comment. So bow your fiddles, pluck your guitars, blow your trumpets, bang your drum, holler a shanty, squeeze your accordion, dance a tarantella and enjoy our 31st Anniversary Festival. Lord Mayor, City of Wollongong

Project & Operations Director

I am delighted to send my very best wishes to participants and attendees celebrating the Illawarra Folk Festival in 2016.

Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge that this festival, currently in its 31st year – 11 of those at Bulli is well recognised as one of our region's significant annual cultural events that brings people together and promotes friendliness, participation and having a good time with new and old friends – a Jewel in our Crown.

Hi everyone,

This diverse annual festival in the magnificent Illawarra plays host to some of the best Australian and international folk artists, and offers the opportunity for people from different backgrounds to come together and celebrate folk music. Since its establishment, the Illawarra Folk Festival has continued to grow, and is now firmly cemented on Illawarra’s events calendar. I encourage everyone attending to get involved and experience what’s on offer. I would like to take this opportunity to commend the Illawarra Folk Festival organisers and supporters for making this wonderful event possible. Initiatives like this help make our State an incredibly special and enjoyable place to live. On behalf of the NSW Government, I congratulate the organisational team for their ongoing dedication and commitment, and wish everyone celebrating this wonderful event an enjoyable and memorable 2016 Illawarra Folk Festival.

Mike Baird MP Premier

Our region is diverse in its people, activities and culture. Equally so, this 4 day festival in January is also diverse and culturally enriching. The program spreads across venues, 500 concerts and events with 170 international, national and local acts – many of which are local. With outstanding performers and celebrations including the return of the youth folk program with Youth Traditions Awards encouraging traditional folk music and Folk Music School with numerous workshops over 2 days; open to all ages. Along with an invitation to all songwriters and musicians residing in Australia to enter our 31st Anniversary song contest - FOLK TIME Transport has been arranged for you, the Green Music Train is back – 8 carriages from Sydney to Bulli. Leave the car at home and have the festival start when you get on the train! Over the 4 days of the event, The Illawarra Folk Festival attracts over 11,00 visitors and generates approximately $1.5M into our local economy – all with help from over 400 volunteers offering up over 7000 hours of help. This is certainly a key signature event in our local tourism calendar and Wollongong City Council is very proud to be launching and supporting this event.

Welcome to another Illawarra Folk Festival – the 31st edition. Yet again, our programming committee has put together a great line-up of entertainment for our enjoyment. We must always keep in mind that our festival is entirely run by volunteers, and a lot of volunteers are required. In fact, the number of volunteers needed for each festival now exceeds four hundred. It is fun to be a volunteer for the Illawarra Folk Festival in any capacity, and be part of a large team of people which puts together something so very special. If you think you may be interested in volunteering for future festivals, please have a word to one of our volunteers wearing a blue vest. The 2016 Festival Organising Committee is listed separately in this publication. These are the people who contribute a huge amount of volunteer hours in leadership roles both throughout the year and during the festival itself. We actually start organising the next festival shortly after the previous festival has finished, and try to incorporate any good ideas which have come from the running of the previous festival. It was great that we had some new and enthusiastic contributors to the important planning phase of the 2016 festival, and the festival will no doubt benefit as a result. Let me extend a huge thank you to all our volunteers. Let’s all enjoy the festival, and hope that we are blessed with good weather throughout.

On behalf of Wollongong City Council, it is with great pleasure to again support the Illawarra Folk Festival Program.

Buy your pass online to save you money and time.

Buy your camping pass online as well as these are only issued with season passes.

Make sure you pack summer clothes, colourful Mardi Gras style clothing, an umbrella for quick rain-showers, a refillable water bottle and lots of good cheer. Don’t worry if you haven’t brought anything to wear - get yourself a cheap costume from the Scraggs shop in the Slacky Flat Bar. If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway onto Grevillea Park Road and then to the main entry gate at Bulli Showground. If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main Bulli Showground Gate on Grevillea Park Road entry gate and head for the Festival Office.

them all weekend or you might get a fine from the Pearl Police with those proceeds going to The Disability Trust.

Make sure you get a full program when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your guide to the venues, performers and lots of general information.

Alternatively view the Festival Program Live on your phone or device from www. illawarrafolkfestival.com.au/live

Once you’ve parked the car, head for the Global Green Cafe de Rude or the Festival Bar in the main complex building, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program. There are 14 venues to choose from. You can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck. Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. However, you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing, shanty singers or impromptu sessions.

Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind. Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site. You’ll

discover great music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see, move onto another venue.

If all this fails, head for the Festival Bar, the Global Green, Cafe de Rude, Tantric Turtle Cafe or the Piazza. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to see and hear. Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the three venues there - The Chapel, Cade de Rude and Miners Camp.

At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians are always up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions. Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow revellers when leaving.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS 2016 community partners

Bulli Public School

The Illawarra Folk Festival is a major community event which has generated more than $100,000 for charities over the past 15 years and we want to do more. The festival is powered by a group of hard-working volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk who believe in giving back to the community. Since 2001, beginning with the major Guinness sponsorship, the festival has supported the Cystic Fibrosis NSW, The Denny Foundation, NSW Cancer Council, APHEDA, refugee support group SCARF, the Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, the Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church, East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres Disability Services, Scouts groups, the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and the South Coast School for Children with Autism. Thursday Charity Partners Since 2001 the Illawarra Folk Festival has provided charity / non-profit organisations the opportunity to receive the benefits of the official opening day, Thursday. This is achieved by the sharing of the entry cost to the festival for Thursday and the proceeds of a raffle to our two nominated charities. It's a great opportunity for folks who've not tasted the joy of a folk festival to get a sample for a mere $30 while supporting two worthwhile charities. Our 2016 charities are The Disability Trust and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library which is supported the combined Rotary Clubs of the Illawarra.

The Disability Trust is committed to providing highly professional care and services as well as advocacy for people with disabilities and their families. Based in regional NSW with the head office in Wollongong, The Disability Trust provides a wide range of services to residents from Sydney in the north to the Victorian border. The Disability Trust has its roots firmly in the community, having been established in 1974 to help children with disabilities and their families in the Illawarra. In recent years they have grown substantially, and now have approximately 800 permanent and casual staff providing care for more than 3000 clients. In 1995, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly's vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. The project has been gaining momentum in Australia and the Illawarra with support by the combined Rotary Clubs of the Illawarra and an IMB Foundation grant.

A GREENER FESTIVAL Waste Reduction The Illawarra Folk Festival is committed to minimising waste and its impact on the environment including the recycling of plastics, glass and cardboard. Our aim is to send no waste to landfill. This is a big task and requires attendees, campers, volunteers, stallholders and performers to work together. There are 3 waste streams at the festival. Each waste stream has an individual collection bin and is identified by the colour of the bin lid and signage.

Join the Green Army If you are passionate about music and even more passionate about saving our planet come and join the Illawarra Folk Festival’s Green Army! Last year we achieved close to 95% diversion from landfill and this year we want to get over 98% diverted but we NEED YOU to help us do it. As part of the Green Army your duties will be: Spread the REDUCE and RECYCLE WASTE message around the festival

Place signage around the festival Collect and replace the bins at stations Monitor waste input and output to ensure contamination is kept to a minimum. The target is 98% recyclables. Musicians leading the way to a greener world Green Music Australia is working with musicians, festivals, venues and studios to help the music scene reduce its environmental impact. We're proud to partner with Illawarra Folk Festival in making this event plastic water bottle free! Check out our work, and help us help the music scene help the planet: www.greenmusic.org.au

We're going plastic water bottle free! Imagine music festivals and venues keeping musicians and punters healthily hydrated with no single use disposable plastic water bottles in sight. It’s actually not that hard to imagine, because it’s what we all used to do! The Illawarra Folk Festival, in its drive to be a ‘greener’ festival, is aiming to be a disposable water bottle free festival in 2016 with the help of Green Music Australia.

HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO Bring your own re-usable water bottle or buy one of the festival souvenir bottles (at the Festival Shop) and fill up at the Filtered and Refrigerated Water Trailers. With over 11,000 patrons over our festival period we can save a multitude of disposable water bottles going to landfill! Single use, disposable plastic water bottles are an entirely unnecessary product in Australia, with demand manufactured by marketing campaigns, and with a massive environmental impact. The waste from the hundreds of millions of bottles Australians buy and throw out every year ends up mostly in landfill and, too often, in our waterways, leaching toxic pollution into our soil and rivers. As well as damaging local environments, the manufacture and transport of the bottles generates over 60,000 tonnes of planet-warming greenhouse gas pollution each year, according to Cool Australia.

Over the last 20 years, single use bottles have gone from an oddity to everywhere, and the music scene is no exception. Musicians themselves, instead of being given jugs and glasses of water when we perform, frequently find trays of small disposable bottles as the only water provided by venues and festivals. Audience members are often handed free plastic water bottles when arriving at festivals as a reminder to stay hydrated, and food and drink stalls sell them by the thousand, creating a rubbish headache for organisers as well as an environmental nightmare. While we mightn’t think of water bottles as part of the music industry’s environmental footprint, it’s no exaggeration to suggest that they could easily account for one of our biggest impacts. They are also extremely visible, there are readily available alternatives, there are existing leaders in the industry already phasing them out or banning them altogether, and, being a product manufactured by marketing, they are highly vulnerable to a cultural campaign.

ABOUT GREEN MUSIC AUSTRALIA Green Music Australia is harnessing the cultural power of music and musicians to lead the way to a greener world. So many musicians want to reduce their environmental impact but don’t know where to start. Green Music Australia is here to make it easy, providing tools, case studies, encouragement and hands on support, partnering with others across the sector to make change happen. They run campaigns on key issues to build support and momentum for change. And they celebrate successes and leaders, showing others how much can be done.

The Mandolin

2016 Theme Instrument

2016 is the year of the mandolin at the Illawarra Folk Festival! We’re planning mandolin workshops at the Folk School, special concerts and a major showcase concert ‘Mandolin Mayhem’... and we have a swag of superb mandolin wielding musicians from around the country and the globe ready to entertain and delight you with their chordophonial cacophonies! A mandolin (Italian: mandolino; literally “small mandola”) is a musical instrument in the lute family and is usually plucked with a plectrum or «pick». It commonly has four courses of doubled strings tuned in unison (8 strings), although five (10 strings) and six (12 strings) course versions also exist. The courses are normally tuned in a succession of perfect fifths. It is the soprano member of a family that includes the mandola, octave mandolin, mandocello, and mandobass. There are many styles of mandolin, but three are common, the Neapolitan or round-backed mandolin, the carved-top mandolin and the flat-backed mandolin.

Feature Mandolin Events You’ll see a mandolin in a number of bands! Here’s some of them: Ann Lehmann (The Shield Maidens & The Celt), Beth Patterson, The Button Collective, Chloe Roweth, Fresh off the Boat, Irine Vela (The HaBiBis), Harman & Hellens, Claudio Iacono (The Humphreys), Innes, Maurie Mulheron (Songs From The Sixities), Nigel Lever (Karen Lynne Bluegrass Circle), Liam Kilpatrick (O’Leary), Lindsay Martin (Riogh), Nara Demasson (Santa Taranta), Scott Wise and Senor Cabrales. The Great Woolly Yarns Competition Your chance to take out some of the great prizes on offer just by telling the odd tale or two. Truth is not an issue though laying claim to it is essential. Only one rule – all yarns must be no longer than five minutes or the gong applies. Hosted by Russell Hannah this competition is in its 29th year. Politicians are barred. SAT 11:30–12:45pm La Petite Grande

The John and Dale Parody Mug The late John Dengate was one of the finest exponents of parody in the country- so much so, that often when folks heard traditional tunes they’d remark- whoever wrote that pinched John Dengate’s tune. The John and Dale Dengate mug (it’s not a cup) will be awarded to the pest parody, or performance of one, at the concert. Your name will be inscribed on the mug (which was one of Johns and has been donated by John’s wife, Dale who hopefully will be there to present it) The best part however is the winner will be presented with a replica which can be refilled by our friendly bar staff for free for the rest of the festival. It doesn’t have to be a song, it can also be a poem. Just bring your parody and enter on the day- they don’t even have to be original. The Mug is inscribed with the words ‘I’ll Fight but not Surrender’. Sun 3:15pm-4:15pm La Petite Grande

2015 Winner Mike Martin with Russell Hannah and Dale Dengate
