Welcome to our Country

We are coming off the back of a bit of a financial drubbing in 2016 but we are nothing, if not game. Sometimes the weather Gods are not so friendly. Once again our hard working committee (you’ll see their names in the back of this program) started work in mid January 2016. Whereas there is an occasional rest for the wicked, there is no rest for volunteer folk festival organisers and they have been hard at it ever since. The result is the festival that you are going to experience. It is with a great deal of sadness that I report the passing two of our great stalwarts and supporters over the years. We lost both Brian Dunnett and Barry Winter during the year. Brian was the brains behind the Green Music Train and oversaw its success for the last nine years. His passion was railway heritage and folklore and before he died he commissioned playwright Pat Cranney to write and direct a show commemorating the 1917 Railway Strike. This has been done and will be performed in Brian’s honour. Barry Winter was a stalwart of the club, a volunteer at every festival that people can remember. We will also be holding a memorial concert for Barry. We still maintain that we are ‘The Biggest Little Festival in the World.’ We maintain our intimacy and involvement with our blackboards, sessions, poetry, folk school and spoken word. Our venues are relatively small so you are always up front and close and what you see is what you get. The program - well it speaks for itself once again, but a couple of things are worthy of mention. This year the themed instrument is the banjo, and we have our biggest number of artists from overseas artists ever - it truly puts the festival on the global map. One of our highlights is ‘The Folk Legends’ concert. Whether you’re an ‘old’ folkie or a new one it’s an opportunity to see the folkies who made this great movement of ours. All have performed at our festivals over the years and they are all back together for the first time in years. We welcome back Alex Hood, Dave de Hugard, Emma Hannah, Phyl Lobl, John Broomhall and Bob McInnes. And the Music Train just keeps getting bigger and more diverse. Over 800 people in 8 carriages spread over three trains and two days and each representing a different genre of music travelled down last year. It will ferry people to the festival in a very ‘green’ way (ie very small Carbon Footprint). It also helps with alleviating some of our parking problems. We would like to thank all our sponsors whose names and logos appear on all our promotion material and programs. Without them we would be struggling to present the quality artistic event that is the Illawarra Folk Festival. Destinations Wollonong, Wollongong Council, BueScope and Win Television have also been continuous and generous supporters, so it’s thanks to them again. Finally we would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and organisers who give of their time unstintingly to ensure that this Festival not only remains “The Biggest Little Festival in The World” but also one of the best. Of course no introduction would be complete without thanking, Festival Artistic Director, David De Santi, whose unbelievable energy, commitment and genius keeps the festival just “rolling along’. As I said this is our 32nd and Dave’s 22nd in the role. 2017 Celebration! Set in the spectacular northern Illawarra Escarpment in Bulli Showground the festival has 14 onsite venues and is a family friendly village. With superb music from 180 international, national and local artists there’s also a colourful array of international food stalls, craft stalls and the festival bar. MESSAGES Artistic Director When you enter the gates of the Bulli Showground you enter a peaceful and musical global village where you can leave your everyday cares behind. You enter a world of inspiration, vision, colour, creativity, harmony and community spirit - a utopia we wish could last all year. To achieve this of course requires quite a huge team effort and thanks to a core of about 40 devoted volunteers, which swells to 400 plus, the 32nd anniversary Illawarra Folk Festival will be another great celebration. What’s new? The new venue in the Grevillea Park is the Honey’s Eater Lounge. It will be a great space to hang in with a bar and the Tantric Turtle Café to fill your physical soul. The dance stage has been moved to the harness racing track and has been renamed Tivoli on Track. The blackboard has moved to a new space at the Dog Kennels and is called the Figgy Folk Session Blackboard. We’re proud to continue to support youth folk with the return of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra performing with special guests FourWinds and Andy Irvine and Luke Plumb. It should be a great way for young folk musicians from all over the country to share and play their love of folk music. We’re also continuing the Youth Tradition Awards and the Youth Concerts as well as the wonderful Folk School to nurture and develop our young performers. All this is part of the monster cultural event the festival has become. Here’s a few statistics – 180 acts from all over the world and Australia with 80 of them local, around 800 performers, 560 concerts / dances / sessions / workshops and 14 venues. Despite the scale of the festival we still manage to have ways to participate for all – playing music, singing, dancing, reciting, telling yarns and socialising! On this occasion of the 32nd festival and my 22nd as Artistic Director it is opportune to contemplate the development of the festival and the thousands

of hours spent to create them. It’s crazy but it always seems so worthwhile seeing and enjoying these unique gatherings. I have to confess another motive – being able to play music at the festival in as many bands and sessions as possible. However it does seem like a lot of trouble to get a gig! Apart from the artistic selections and programming I have been involved in the creation of the graphics, imagery, marketing, media, website development, sponsorship, community partnerships, Thursday charity day, folk school, youth program, merchandise, raffle, visual enhancement, venue setup, sound production, site planning, Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra, festival choir and orchestra and so need to thank a swag of people who have been part of the journey. Thanks to Russell Hannah and Graeme Morrison with artist selection and programming. Thanks to Graeme for coordinating the amazing 42 track festival CD compilation. Thanks to Robyn Jackson, Anne Proudlove, Heidi Vestergaard and Suzi Wakefield with artist management, ticketing and accommodation. I am delighted to send my best wishes to everyone attending the Illawarra Folk Festival. This exciting annual event promotes and celebrates traditional folk music, playing host to some of the very best Australian and international folk artists. Offering the opportunity for people to come together in honour of folk music, the event has grown over the years into one of the most revered in the Illawarra. Special and unique events such as this contribute to making NSW such a wonderful and enjoyable place to live and work. If you are visiting, I strongly encourage you to take some time out and explore NSW, particularly the magnificent Illawarra region.

Bulli Showground comes alive every year for the festival with a variety of large and more intimate performance spaces featuring poetry, comedy, music workshops and dance, as well as a wide variety of gourmet food stalls Over the 4 days of the event, The Illawarra Folk Festival attracts over 11,500 visitors and generates approximately $1.5M into our local economy – all with help from over 400 volunteers offering up over 7000 hours of help – many from our region. These type of events boost our regional economy and allow us to show off just what we as a region can do – a world class festival attracting artists from all over the world. Congratulations to everyone involved and please enjoy the hospitality of our beautiful region between the mountains and the sea.

believe we have taken steps to better ensure the festival’s sustainability. Of course, we partner with a lot of organisations as well, and have a lot of sponsors. I thank all of them because, without them, it just wouldn’t be possible. One of our key partners is the greyhound club which races weekly here at Bulli Showground. Throughout the year, Darren Hull and his staff do a great job maintaining the enclosed grounds which form the main part of our festival area. We all felt better when the NSW Government recently reversed its controversial greyhound-ban decision. The 2016 Festival Organising Committee is listed separately in this publication. These are the people who contribute a huge amount of volunteer hours in leadership roles both throughout the year and during the festival itself. It is fun to be a volunteer for the Illawarra Folk festival in any capacity, and be part of a large team of people which puts together something very special. If you think you may be interested in volunteering for future festivals, please have a word to one of our volunteers wearing a blue vest. Let me extend a huge thank you to all our volunteers. Illawarra Folk Festival is certainly a key signature event in our local tourism calendar and Wollongong City Council is very proud to be supporting this event.

Welcome to another Illawarra Folk Festival – the 32nd edition. Again, our programming committee has put together a great line-up of entertainment for our enjoyment. We must always keep in mind that our festival is entirely run by volunteers, and a lot of volunteers are required. In fact, the number of volunteers needed for each festival now exceeds four hundred. We’re proud that our festival is volunteer-run, and, after the last festival, we held a workshop to determine how we could best keep it going. This may be your first folk festival, so here are some ideas about how to enjoy this year’s party. •

Buy your pass online to save you money and time.

Make sure you pack summer clothes, colourful Mardi Gras style clothing, an umbrella for quick rain-showers, a refillable water bottle and lots of good cheer. Don’t worry if you haven’t brought anything to wear - get yourself a cheap costume from the Scraggs shop in the Slacky Flat Bar.

If you’re driving to the festival then follow the signs from the Princes Highway onto Grevillea Park Road and then to the main entry gate at Bulli Showground.

If you’re using public transport then walk up to the main Bulli Showground Gate on Grevillea Park Road entry gate and head for the Festival Office. Make sure you get a full program when you do the pass/wristband exchange. This is your guide to the venues, performers and lots of general information. Once you’ve parked the car, head for the Global Green, Piazza, Honey Eater’s Lounge or the Festival Bar in the main complex building, sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program. There are 14 venues to choose from. You can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck. Having a highlighter pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch. However, you may get waylaid by buskers, poets, parades, dancing, shanty singers or impromptu sessions. Don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind. Chances are you won’t know any of the acts. Just walk the site. You’ll discover great music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. If you don’t like what you see, move onto another venue.

If all this fails, head for the Festival Bar, the Global Green, Honey Eater’s Lounge or the Piazza. There’s food and drink there to fill and refresh your soul. Have a chat with the bar staff - they usually know the acts and can give you a hand deciding on what to see and hear. Don’t forget at some point to do some exercise and get up to the Grevillea Park for a concert or two. It’s well worth enjoying the natural ambience of the three venues there - The Chapel, Honey Eater’s Lounge and Miners Camp.

At the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bar as the musicians are always up for a tune or two. Sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions. Remember to have fun, but be courteous to your fellow revellers when leaving.

Licence, ejection and cancellation: No redemption value. The IFC reserves the right, without refund of any amount paid, to refuse admission to, or eject, any person whose conduct the IFC, their agents, employees or contractors deems to be disorderly, who uses vulgar or abusive language or who otherwise fails to comply with any IFC directions concerning the management of the IFF. The IFF is a licensed venue. In accordance with liquor licensing law, intoxicated persons are not allowed to remain on licensed premises and will be asked to leave. No alcohol is permitted to be brought into the licensed area of the IFF. Breach of any such terms and conditions will terminate your revocable licence to attend the event without refund or compensation. All persons attending the IFF must hold a valid ticket and display a valid wristband. The applicable law is that of New South Wales.

The festival shop is located in the Slacky Flat Bar (Betting Ring) area, under the grandstand. Artist’s and festival merchandise such as souvenirs, recordings, festival T-shirts, cookbooks, clothing and publications are available.

Camping Rules & Information

There is limited camping available on site. Access to the camping grounds is from 9am Wednesday morning and you will not be able to camp before then. You can only register for camping when the camping office is open.Your festival wristband must be worn at all times. All children must also have a wristband as well. • Children and youth (U18) who are camping must be with a responsible camping parent. • Entry to campsite area is for festival ticketed campers only. • There is to be a maximum of 6 persons per campsite • RV camping sites will be allocated by the type and size, ie caravan, motorhome, vans. • Specific sites cannot be allocated or reserved for others, however groups are able to pre-book and pay for sites through the ticket office. Do not light any campfires. • There is to be a minimum of 2.5 metres between tents. Only one vehicle is able to be parked within the campsite area. Additional vehicles will need to be parked in the nominated car parking areas. • No parking is allowed next to tents at Slacky Heights (near Grevillea Park) and cars must be parked beside the road or in the festival car park. • Recycle all waste. Bins are marked as recycling / compostable and general waste. • Do not leave any valuables in cars or tents. • The use of generators is only permitted by motorhomes or caravans camping in the Wanderers Camp or Middle Earth areas between 8am and 8pm to recharge ‘house batteries’ and at the discretion of management. • No pets allowed. You will be asked to leave if you bring a pet. • Be courteous of your neighbours at night and keep noise to a minimum. All late night sessions should be inside the Grandstand Bar and Restaurant. • Make sure that all your camping equipment stays within your allocated space. • Unruly behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in your removal from the site. Twenty four hour security is on hand to ensure the safety and amenity of all campers.

Showers

There are limited hot-water showers so please conserve water and keep your showers short. There are hot showers for women and men under the grandstand. There are also some showers in the small toilet block near the entry to the main festival site.

Reusable Bar Cups We’re replacing disposable cups with reusable ones. For just $3, you’ll get a cup from the Festival bar which you can reuse, refill or swap throughout the day. You can then choose to take the cup home as a souvenir or refund it before you leave.

Festival Volunteers

The festival runs entirely on volunteers who appreciate a helping hand and the odd thank you. If you can also volunteer a few hours of work then please see the Festival Office staff.

Children and Youth

The festival aims to provide a safe environment for families. Parents and guardians are responsible for their children (U18) at all times. The Shed, in the centre of the showground, is the kids’ entertainment venue and not a child-minding facility so carers and parents are asked to stay with their young children.

Visitor Surveys

A survey is being conducted. The information gathered is confidential and is used to improve future festivals and assess the quality and impact of the festival on the community. We sincerely appreciate your assistance by completing them.

Lost and Found

All lost and found items including persons should be reported to the Festival Office.

BYO Bottle

The festival is striving to be a Disposal Water Bottle Free event for 2017. This festival you can find free chilled water from a special trailer and water fountains at the grandstand and around venues. Bring and use your refillable water bottle or get one from the festival office.

Festival Bars - Slacky Flat & Honey Eater’s Lounge

The festival organises its own bars and the proceeds help keep festival pass prices down. Please patronise it but do drink sensibly. The bar is conducted strictly according to licensing regulations, ie underage and intoxicated persons will not be served and no alcohol is to be taken inside or outside licensed areas. Late-Night Partying

A noise curfew will apply to all camping areas after 10pm. Anyone wishing to party on can go to the Grandstand Bar area inside the Grandstand Building. Please keep all sessions inside the building. Please be courteous of other campers and festival neighbours.

Smoke-free Festival

The Illawarra Folk Festival is a smoke-free festival. Smoking in any form including e-cigarettes/vapour is not permitted anywhere on the festival site. There is no smoking in camping areas. However, we have some Yes Butt zones, where smokers can feel free to smoke. We have made some changes, so please look for the Yes Butt banners and butt trays..

The Illawarra Folk Festival is a major community event which has generated more than $110,000 for charities over the past 16 years and we want to do more. The festival is powered by a group of hard-working volunteer musicians, dancers, poets, storytellers and culturally minded folk who believe in giving back to the community. Since 2001, beginning with the major Guinness sponsorship, the festival has supported over 50 organisations including the Disability Trust, Rotary Clubs of Wollongong, Cystic Fibrosis NSW, The Denny Foundation, NSW Cancer Council, APHEDA, refugee support group SCARF, the Leukaemia Foundation, Oxfam, Camp Quality, the Shepherd Centre for the Deaf, Bulli Uniting Church, East Timor Fund, St John’s Ambulance, Greenacres Disability Services, Scouts groups, the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and the South Coast School for Children with Autism. Over the past eight years in Bulli, through its charity bush dances, festival opening concerts and donations, the festival has given more than

$35,000 in cash to the recipient charities.

We continue to seek further partnerships with community and charity organisations as well to bolster our volunteer ranks. Thursday Charity Partners Since 2001 the Illawarra Folk Festival has provided charity / non-profit organisations the opportunity to receive the benefits of the official opening day, Thursday. This is achieved by the sharing of the entry cost to the festival for Thursday and the proceeds of a raffle to our two nominated charities. It’s a great opportunity for folks who’ve not tasted the joy of a folk festival to get a sample for a mere $30 while supporting two worthwhile charities.

Our 2017 charities are headspace Wollongong and the Waniora Public School.

Waniora Primary School Waniora Primary School is located in a beach and parkland setting in Bulli, with over 340 students enrolled. Their vision is to build a high quality learning environment that promotes equity and inclusiveness, reflecting the school and community values. They aim to promote confident, creative and resilient citizens who are equipped to embrace the challenges of the 21st Century. The school values are - Respect, Responsibility and Safety. Waniora has a very active parent community, the P&C, who supports the school to achieve all its goals, particularly through fundraising activities. They meet on the third Tuesday of each month and welcome new members. The donations will help fund school projects including new books and technology for student classrooms and the school garden.

headspace Wollongong provides free support to young people aged 12-25 years going through a tough time. Their services include counselling and mental health support, physical health, sexual health and contraception, drug and alcohol issues, and education and employment services. They also run activities, events and workshops aimed at engaging the local community, raising awareness and understanding about mental health, and breaking down barriers to seeking help. So many musicians want to reduce their environmental impact but don’t know where to start. Green Music Australia exists to make it easy, providing tools, case studies, encouragement and hands on support, partnering with others across the sector to make change happen.

Why are we doing this?

With over 11,000 people coming to our festival each year, we’ll be saving tens of thousands of cups and water bottles from landfill!

Single use plastic bottles and cups are an entirely unnecessary product in Australia. Sold in their millions at festivals and venues across the country, they fill bins by the truckload and cause a waste headache for organisers. But they’re not biodegradable and they’re not environmentally friendly. We use them once, and then throw them in the bin. Most end up as waste in landfill, littering our beaches and streets, or in our oceans. This has devastating effects on wildlife and leaches toxic pollution into our soils. As well as damaging local

New Venue - Honey Eater’s Lounge It is situated midway between the Miner’s Camp and The Chapel in the Grevillea Park. It will be an intimate space with food and refreshments by Tantric Turtle and there will be a second Festival Bar.

Dance Stage Relocated

The dance stage has moved onto the harness track and has a new name - The Tivoli on Track. It will host all the dance events during the festival and some intimate concerts. The Global Green venue will become a concert space from Thursday night.

Blackboard Venue Created

A new blackboard space has been created at the southern end of the Greyhound Kennels. See the MC from Thursday evening from Thursday evening to Sunday afternoon for a 30 minute spot to impress!

Bottled Water Free

The festival will continue to be a Bottled Water Free event with the assistance of Green Music Australia. Use your bottle or buy a festival souvenir water bottle and have them filled at the refill stations around the festival site.

Reusable Cups for the Bar

The festival bar will use ‘reusable cups’ for drinks. We’re replacing disposable cups with reusable ones. For just $3, you’ll get an Illawarra Folk Festival

Youth at the Folkie

The Shed venue will host the Youth at the Folkie concerts, Young Traditions Awards and young childrens’ program. Youth are encouraged to join the second run of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra. Rehearsals from Tuesday with performances on Saturday and Sunday.

The Youth Traditions Awards concerts return to encourage young folk to play traditional folk music. There are cash prizes to be won, thanks to Bulli Medical Practice, Judith Stubbs & Associates and Wongawilli Colonial Dance Club.

Dance Zones

Dance zones have been created at the sides of the Black Diamond Marquee, Slacky Flat Bar and Show Pavilion. Look for the signs and markings and feel to free to dance without blocking the view of seated patrons. Please do not relocate positioned chairs from venues. In addition to the concerts there are a number of special events throughout the festival. Here’s a snapshot of some of them.

THE BANJO 2017 THEME INSTRUMENT

2017 is the year of the banjo at the Illawarra Folk Festival! We’re planning banjo workshops at the Folk School, special concerts and we have a swag of superb banjo wielding musicians from around the country and the globe ready to entertain and delight you with their chordophonial cacophonies! The banjo is a four, five or (occasionally) six-stringed instrument with a thin membrane stretched over a frame or cavity as a resonator, called the head. The membrane, or head, is typically made of plastic, although animal skin is still occasionally but rarely used, and the frame is typically circular. The banjo is quite often associated with country, folk, Irish traditional and bluegrass music.

Historically, the banjo occupied a central place in African American traditional music, before becoming popular in the minstrel shows of the 19th century. The banjo, with the fiddle, is a mainstay of American old-time music. It is also very frequently used in Traditional (“Trad”) Jazz. Some banjos have a separate resonator plate on the back of the pot to project the sound forward and give the instrument more volume. This type of banjo is usually used in bluegrass music, though resonator banjos are played by players of all styles, and are also used in old-time music, sometimes as a substitute for electric amplification when playing in large venues. Open-back

banjos generally have a mellower tone and weigh less than resonator banjos and usually have a different setup, often with a higher string action.

The modern banjo comes in a variety of forms and includes tenor banjo, cello banjo, bass and contrabass banjo, banjo mandolin, banjo ukulele and the 6 string banjo guitar.

Held at the Thursday Night concert, the welcome to Dharawal country has been performed since the Festivals move to Bulli by local Aboriginal elder, Vic Chapman. Vic was the first Aboriginal School Principal in NSW. He has a special affiliation with the Folk Festival through his late son John who for a number of years was a festival volunteer and attendee. This is the only Festival in the world to hold this great gastronomic and musical event and there are some who would say that that is just as well. Bookings are essential for this three–course gourmet treat. Non–tripe eaters can join in for a plate of ‘Grey Sludge’ as well as the other two courses. But dare be critical of this culinary delight and you will be fed ‘green sludge’– grey sludge that has been left in the sun for a day or two. Positions at this great epicurian, gourmet event are strictly limited so please book on-line early to avoid disappointment. The late Alan Scott was one of the giants of the Australian Folk Music scene. A member of the original Bushwhackers, a great collector of Australian Bush Music and an active member of the Bush Music Club. He was a big supporter of our festival. We had a rule that Alan Scott was to be invited every year and every year he turned up and contributed to the folk scene and the event in many ways. 1917:STRIKE! - A Tribute to Brian Dunnett A tribute to the memory of the late Brian Dunnett – a folkie, unionist, railway worker and an advocate for the preservation of railway heritage. Also the person most responsible for starting the Music Train when the Festival first moved to Bulli. 1917: Strike! will tell the story of one of Australia’s biggest industrial disputes, the 1917 Great Strike, which started at Eveleigh Railway Workshops and Randwick Tram Depot and spread across the country leaving wounds that were felt for decades afterwards. Youth Traditions Awards The 2017 Illawarra Folk Festival will the feature the third Youth Traditions Awards to encourage and celebrate young artists who perform traditional folk songs and tunes. Young artists will aged between 9 and 25 will be have the chance to perform in the Youth Traditions Award concerts at the festival. The Youth Traditions Awards are designed to: • encourage young artists to explore and perform traditional folk music from Australia and abroad • broaden young artists repertoire of folk songs and tunes and keep folk traditions fresh and alive give young artists promotional opportunities through winning an award

There are five categories, each limited to five minutes. 1. Best Performance of a traditional Australian folk song 2. Best Performance of a traditional folk song from another tradition 3. Best Performance of a traditional folk tune (or tunes) 4. Tales of the Silk Road Ruido presents a brand new show - Treasures of the Silk Road. Music of almost of every culture has been enriched by wild-hearted travellers. Ha! Ha! Ha! & Ha!

Our humorous concert gets funnier every year so this year we’ve added an extra Ha! There’s three sorts of ‘Funnys’. There’s ‘funny Peculiar’ and ‘Funny Ha! Ha!’. Then there is seriously funny. Well, we’ve got the lot in this concert. Led by the festival’s perennial funny men, Glover and Sorrensen this concert will feature any artist who is remotely weird, jocular or takes the mickey out of anything pretentious. They’ll be joined by Dingos’ Breakfast, Pete Denehy, Peter Willey and Matthew Hobbs, Martin Pearson, Oz Music and Poetry Band and perhaps Alan Non. Barry Winter Memorial Concert

Barry Winter and his wife Anne were two of the Folk Club’s more dedicated and enthusiastic members who rarely missed a concert and volunteered at all our festivals. There wouldn’t have been many performers who played at the club whose CDs Barry didn’t buy. Barry unexpectedly and prematurely died earlier this year. This memorial concert features artists who Barry loved (He even got on stage one night and played with Chord-eaux). The Choirs

The festival has a long tradition of choirs singing about hope and struggle! Union choirs will again feature at the festival as they have done for the past 20 years. The Legends Concert

The Folk Scene in Australia has been around long enough to actually acquire Folkies of legendary status (though one of our legends, Phyl Lobl suggests that we should call it the Old Relics concert) From the ‘Days of Vinyl’ we have Alex Hood (who incidently performed at the first Illawarra FC concert ever in 1979) the Larrikins Dave de Hugard and Bob McInnes who have left their Country

Retreats to be with us, John Broomhall who has given up his North Coast idyll for the weekend, Phyl Lobl from the Deep South (Kiama) and Emma Hannah who has taken up residence in Wollongong to be closer to the action. The Great Woolly Yarns Competition

The John and Dale Dengate Mug for Parody

This is the fourth John and Dale Dengate Mug. The late John Dengate was one of the finest exponents of parody in the country- so much so, that often when folks heard traditional tunes they’d remark whoever wrote that pinched John Dengate’s tune. The John and Dale Dengate mug (it’s not a cup) will be awarded to the pest parody, or performance of one, at the concert. John’s wife Dale who will be there to judge and present it. The best part however is the winner will be presented with a replica which can be refilled by our friendly bar staff for free for the rest of the festival. It doesn’t have to be a song, it can also be a poem. Just bring your parody and enter on the day- they don’t even have to be original. The Limerick Comp

The school aims to increase awareness of folk music traditions and provide opportunities for musicians of all ages to build on their skills and open new musical doors.

THE VENUES

On Slacky Flat There are 11 venues on ‘Slacky Flat’. This area of Bulli was a former mine worker’s camp and then the subsequent showground site.

Grandstand Restaurant

Tivoli on Track

This is upstairs in the Grandstand building and is used from Thursday to Sunday evening. There will be concerts, workshops and Folk Club type concerts. It is also the venue for the world famous Tripe Dinner.

This venue is on the former harness racing track and is a Pavilion Tent placed over a large, specially constructed wooden floor. It will feature concerts, dances, dance demonstrations, dance workshops and other outdoor entertainment.

This is the main festival concert space set in the middle of the Showground Racing Track. It will feature all the major concerts from Friday to Sunday evening and the Festival Finale.

The southern part of the former Horse Stables will be converted into an intimate concert venue.

Figgy Folk Sessions Blackboard

This venue is adjacent to the Greyhound Kennels. It’s where unbooked artists get a chance to perform featuring Blackboard, and other concerts. See the MC to get a 30 minute spot. The name has been borrowed from the regular open mic session at the Figtree (Figgy) Bowling Club hosted by the Illawarra Folk Club and Wollongong Writers Centre.

Global Green Concerts

The Global Green Stage is a Pavilion Tent over a large, specially constructed wooden floor. It will feature concerts, dances, dance demonstrations, dances workshops and other outdoor entertainment. The stage will be surrounded by food and market stalls to create a ‘piazza’ environment.

This is on the ground floor of the Grandstand building and is adjacent to the Slacky Flat Bar. It hosts sessions from early to late and a number of concert and spoken word events.

Concerts, Workshops

This is a building behind the Grandstand and can seat up to 150 persons. It will be used from Thursday to Sunday evening. It is the venue for Dinner Italian Style and the Poets Breakfast events.

Slacky Flat Bar Concerts

A building under the Grandstand that can seat up to 500 persons. It forms part of the Festival Bar area. It is used on Thursday evening for the Opening Charity Concert and then from Friday evening to Sunday evening. The Bar stocks a number of Coopers Beers, wines, cider and soft drinks.

ILLAWARRA FOLK CLUB & ILLAWARRA FOLK FESTIVAL The Illawarra Folk Club was formed in 1979 and has conducted fortnightly concerts on and off in the Wollongong/Illawarra region ever since. Since 1985 the Club has presented the Illawarra Folk Festival 20 times in the village of Jamberoo and 11 times in Bulli. The festival has grown from a humble beginning to being recognised as one of Australia’s premiere folk festivals and the biggest in NSW. The Illawarra Folk Club is a community based incorporated association dedicated to the preservation, performance and presentation of folklore in all its various forms. The members include many local folk musicians, dancers, poets and storytellers. The Club holds regular concerts and events at venues around the Illawarra area. The Festival is a sub-committee of the Folk Club with around 40 members. It meets once month during the year and more often as the festival approaches. The Illawarra Folk Club hosts a number of concerts during the year featuring local, national and touring international artists. There are usually 2 to 3 acts per event. They are held on the 1st Fridays and 3rd Saturdays of the month from February to November.

24-26 February Cobargo Folk Festival, far South Coast of NSW

If you are member of the Illawarra Folk Club you usually get a $5 discount on the entry price so it’s well worth joining!
