DISCOVER THE Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail

The Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail (KCT) offers the perfect autumn adventure, blending rich history with stunning fall foliage. French colonists named the Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail in the early 1700s. This 60-mile auto tour route winds through the scenic Middle Mississippi River Valley, showcasing dramatic bluffs, and quaint historic villages. As the leaves change colors, visitors can explore French colonial sites, Native American heritage, and early Illinois statehood landmarks while enjoying the stunning countryside. While there are more than 60 miles and over 50 landmarks to explore on the KCT, we have pulled out a few must-visit spots for you to discover this fall. For more information kctrailillinois.org.

Stand in the same room where Lewis and Clark planned much of their famous 1804 westward expedition at the historic Cahokia Courthouse, in Cahokia. The 1740 French structure is open for visitors to explore.

Just a few short blocks away, the Holy Family Church & Parish Museum boasts an equally impressive resume that history buffs are sure to enjoy. It is the oldest church west of the Allegheny Mountains and is the oldest continuous Catholic parish in the United States. It is one of the best preserved examples of French colonial architecture in the country.

In making your way south, you’ll come across the wonderful community of Columbia, which hosts more than one notable stop! The Miller-Fiege Home and Sandbank School sites offer an unprecedented peak into life in the area during the 1800s through their dedication to preservation and education on the topic.

Dive even deeper into the early history of Downstate at the oldest settlement in the area, the Bellefontaine House in Waterloo. And if you are looking for another local treasure, swing around the corner to the Monroe County History Museum, where visitors are immersed into the rich history of the region from French settlement all the way to modern day.

The Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail is home to one of the oldest building in the State, Fort de Chartres in Prairie du Rocher This fort hosts multiple military reenactments throughout the year, and welcomes visitors for self-guided tours anytime. The site is an essential stop along your journey down the trail. While in the area, roll through downtown Prairie du Rocher to grab some roadtrip grub and take in the village’s old-school charm.

Towards the southern end of the trail you can see where the roots of the area sprouted. The Pierre Menard Home, in Ellis Grove, belonged to the esteemed local trader and first lieutenant governor of the Illinois Territory around the turn of the 19th century. This beautiful home is a well-preserved example of local architecture from the early American period.

Holy Family Church, Cahokia

Not far away in Chester is the Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site, where early French settlers set up defense from the hostile British and their Native American allies leading up to and during the French and Indian War. While the fort is no longer standing, the site provides visitors with a wealth of information about the period and the lifestyle of those who settled around the fort.

Hop across the river for the final stop on the trail! The Kaskaskia Bell State Memorial houses the “Liberty Bell of the West”, which was cast in France in 1741 and gifted to the original village of Kaskaskia This bell was rung by American revolutionaries following a key victory over the British in 1778 that secured the then-attached village of Kaskaskia for the budding nation.
