Pyramid State Recreation Area

Pinckneyville

With a staggering 19,701 acres of wilderness within its bounds, Pyramid State Recreation Area in Pinckneyville is Illinois’ largest state park, featuring forested hills and more than 50 lakes and ponds. Visitors can explore miles of trails, fish in numerous lakes, and observe a diverse range of plant and animal species. Tent and trailer camping are available at designated areas, and the park is a popular destination for hunting and fishing. Large flocks of migratory waterfowl are drawn to the park, along with opportunities for deer and upland game hunting. The park also offers approximately 22 miles of foot and horse trails and an 18-mile mountain bike trail.

Fox Ridge State Park

Charleston

The rugged hills surrounding the Embarras River create a stunning backdrop for your next adventure at Fox Ridge State Park in Charleston. Spanning 2,064 acres, this park is a year-round destination. Enjoy summer activities like camping, fishing, and hiking, or embrace winter with sledding and cross-country skiing. No matter the season, Fox Ridge promises unforgettable outdoor experiences.

Beall Woods State Park

Mt. Carmel

Known as the “Cathedral of Trees,” Beall Woods State Park in Mt. Carmel offers a glimpse into Illinois’ prehistoric landscape with its preserved tracts of old-growth forest. Home to 64 different tree species, the park invites visitors to explore its robust network of trails, participate in interpretive programs, enjoy archery deer hunting, and relax in its scenic picnic and camping areas.

Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area is home to one of the largest campgrounds in Illinois and is located on Carlyle Lake, the state’s largest manmade lake. Each year, over 800,000 visitors come to camp, boat, hike, fish, hunt, picnic, and birdwatch. The Illini Campground features 328 Class A campsites with 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups, 36 Class C campsites for walk-in tent camping, and two rustic cabins available for rent.

South Shore State Park

Just down the road from Eldon Hazlet, South Shore State Park in Carlyle is perfect for family outings and waterbased activities. Visitors can enjoy sandy beaches, a boat launch, and designated swimming areas for a day of swimming, boating, and fishing. Hickory Hollow Campground offers 33 tent or trailer sites with scenic lake views, though no electricity is available. The Deer Run Access Area in the northern park provides a boat launch for small boats. Anglers can reel in crappie, bass, walleye, catfish, and more, while wildlife lovers may spot red foxes, raccoons, squirrels, songbirds, and bluebirds.

Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area

Kinmundy

Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area, with its serene 585-acre lake, shady oaks, and rolling hills, offers a peaceful escape in Kinmundy. Visitors can spot herons, deer, and even wild turkeys. Anglers will enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie, while Rocky Point Beach provides a refreshing swimming spot. Hiking trails and facilities for softball and volleyball add to the park’s appeal.

Randolph County State Recreation Area

Chester

Located near the Mississippi River in Chester, Randolph County State Recreation Area is spread across 1,101 acres of rolling hills. The area boasts numerous lakes and diverse habitats, providing visitors with opportunities to explore the rich abundance of local flora and fauna. With ample shade, it’s the perfect spot to visit on a hot summer day.

Red Hills State Park Sumner

Red Hills State Park in Sumner, named for its striking red clay soil, offers a variety of outdoor activities centered around its scenic 40-acre lake. Visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, hiking, and camping amidst 967 acres of wooded hills and the 627-acre Chauncey Marsh Nature Preserve. From late July to early August, pink and white hibiscus and hairy rose mallow bloom. The park also features equestrian and biking trails, seasonal hunting, and over 100 campsites.

Lincoln Trail State Park

Marshall

Lincoln Trail State Park in Marshall, named after Abraham Lincoln’s family’s journey through the area, features a serene 146-acre lake surrounded by rolling hills and grasslands. Visitors can explore eight miles of hiking trails, enjoy manicured picnic areas, and discover resources dedicated to the area’s rich history.

Washington County State Recreation Area

Nashville

Washington County State Recreation Area in Nashville, IL, centers around a beautiful 248-acre lake, offering excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming, while the surrounding landscape is perfect for hiking, biking, camping, and wildlife observation. With over 900 acres of land designated for hunting, this natural area is a must-visit.

Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area

Fayette County

Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area in Fayette County offers a peaceful setting for outdoor recreation. Shady Grove and Lakeview picnic areas are great for large gatherings, featuring shelters, water, tables, stoves, and privies, with Shady Grove also including playground equipment. For smaller, more private picnics, Fox Knoll, Coon Ridge, and Blackberry Fork are ideal. The park provides 90 campsites with electricity, restrooms, and a sanitary disposal station, plus 24 additional sites for groups. Hickory Grove offers 45 rustic sites with picnic tables, fire pads, and privies in a wooded area. Water hydrants are available, and a special site is designated for youth groups. Reservations are available for select areas.

State Fish & Wildlife Sanctuaries

Downstate Illinois is also home to multiple State Fish and Wildlife Areas, which offer visitors a glimpse into the natural habitats that once flourished throughout the region. Pristinely maintained trails showcase the thriving ecosystems of the greater Mississippi River watershed, providing nature lovers with excellent opportunities for hiking, biking, and wildlife observation.

Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area

Newton

Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area, located three miles northeast of Newton, extends over 1,180 acres, including a 183-acre lake. Visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, and boating while exploring the park’s diverse habitats. Late summer brings vibrant sunflower blooms, adding to the park’s natural beauty. Easily accessible from Routes 130 and 33, the park offers well-maintained camping facilities.

Hamilton County State Fish and Wildlife Area

McLeansboro

Clocking in at over 5,000 acres, Hamilton County State Fish and Wildlife Area in McLeansboro boasts a diverse mix of grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands brimming with wildlife. Visitors can enjoy hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation in this well-managed ecosystem, which includes 1,530 acres designated for hunting. The centerpiece is Dolan Lake, a serene 75-acre lake with three miles of shoreline. Anglers will find largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, and bullheads in its waters. The lake also features a convenient boat launch for easy access.

Crawford County State Fish & Wildlife Area

Hutsonville

Crawford County State Fish & Wildlife Area in Hutsonville is a paradise for anglers, featuring multiple lakes and ponds stocked with a variety of fish species. With 1,100 huntable acres, the rolling landscape is bisected by Hutson Creek and showcases a southern bottomland forest community near its northernmost range. Some open land is farmed to ensure an abundant food supply for wildlife, while wetlands and ponds enhance the area’s biodiversity. The forested regions consist of high-quality, mature oak-hickory stands, providing a rich habitat for various species.

Ten Mile Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area

Southeastern Jefferson County and Western Hamilton County

Encompassing just over 5,800 acres, Ten Mile Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area, located in southeastern Jefferson County and western Hamilton County, offers a diverse range of habitats full of wildlife. Visitors can fish in secluded creeks and lakes, hunt in designated areas, and immerse themselves in nature. With access via rural roads from Illinois Route 142 and Illinois Route 14, this expansive area provides countless opportunities for outdoor exploration.

Kaskaskia River State Fish and Wildlife Area

St. Clair, Monroe, and Randolph Counties

Amassing over 20,000 acres across St. Clair, Monroe, and Randolph counties, Kaskaskia River State Fish and Wildlife Area is one of Illinois’ largest statemanaged sites. Located just 35 miles southeast of St. Louis, this vast area stretches along the Kaskaskia River and offers fishing, hunting, and exploration of unique bottomland forests and wetlands. Key highlights include Baldwin Lake, a 2,018-acre reservoir open for fishing and serving as a vital waterfowl refuge.

Peabody River King State Fish and Wildlife Area

New Athens

Peabody River King State Fish and Wildlife Area in New Athens covers 2,000 acres of natural Illinois wilderness, including over 20 lakes and ponds totaling 534 acres. Once a surface mine, this reclaimed site now offers excellent fishing, hunting, and wildlife observation opportunities. The varied landscape, shaped by its mining history, features grasslands, prairie plants, and fields of sunflowers that support diverse wildlife. Located in southern St. Clair County, it’s easily accessible via Old Highway 13 and Darmstadt Road.

Sam Dale Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area

Johnsonville

Just northwest of Johnsonville in Wayne County, Sam Dale Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area is a picturesque park featuring lush woods, a stunning 194acre lake with five miles of shoreline trails, and several smaller ponds filled with fish and wildlife. Visitors can enjoy fishing, hiking, picnicking, camping, and spotting wildlife such as deer, turkeys, bald eagles, and foxes. Whether you’re exploring the trails, casting a line, or simply soaking in the beauty, this park offers something for everyone.

Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area

Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, located southwest of Newton in Jasper County, covers 1,775 acres of pristine lake and 540 acres of scenic shoreline. This conservation area offers exceptional fishing, picnicking, trail exploration, and deer hunting. The surrounding woodlands and shoreline provide a tranquil escape for wildlife observation.

Du Quoin City Lake

Du Quoin

A local favorite, this lake offers exceptional fishing, kayaking, and canoeing opportunities. With motorized boat restrictions, it maintains a serene environment for visitors. This lake held the state Drum record for almost 60 years at 35 pounds!

Conservation Lake

Mt. Carmel

With its no-wake policy, Conservation Lake is a calm haven for fishing and paddling. Crappie, redear sunfish, and bass populate its waters, offering a peaceful outing in a picturesque setting.

Carlyle Lake Carlyle

Known as the “Playground of Southwestern Illinois,” Carlyle Lake is the state’s largest manmade lake, offering endless opportunities for outdoor fun. With coves and inlets perfect for kayaking and canoeing, open waters for sailing and powerboating, and facilities like the Carlyle Sailing Association and Boulder Marina, it’s a prime destination for water enthusiasts. Duck Island Airboat Services adds an adventurous touch, providing thrilling wetland tours. Carlyle also held the state Flathead Catfish record for almost 20 years at 78 pounds!

Olney’s Trio of Lakes

Borah Lake

This 142-acre lake offers a peaceful retreat for fishing and non-motorized boating. Anglers can target largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, with kayaks, canoes, and electric trolling boats welcome.

Vernor Lake

At 30 acres, Vernor Lake provides a serene setting for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, with restrictions on motorized boats ensuring a tranquil atmosphere.

East Fork Lake

Known for its year-round fishing tournaments, East Fork Lake boasts expansive waters and easy access for all boat types, from jon boats to speedboats and pontoons.

Baldwin Lake

Randolph County

This 2,018-acre reservoir is a fisherman’s paradise. Known for its black crappie and channel catfish, Baldwin Lake also welcomes nonmotorized boats, including kayaks, canoes, and small electric trolling boats. This lake is currently home to the Channel Catfish state record of 45 lbs 4 oz since 1987!

Governor Bond Lake Greenville

Covering 775 acres, this lake invites sportsmen and water enthusiasts to enjoy fishing, boating, and scenic picnics. Both motorized and nonmotorized boats are welcome, with well-maintained ramps and piers.

Newton Lake

Jasper County

Perhaps Illinois’ best bass lake sits just on the city limits of Newton. This lake features over 1700 acres of water with 52 miles of wooded shoreline. Even with a high bass population, you are likely to catch a 6 to 7 pound bass with the potential of a 9 pound bass. This lake does have a 25 horse power limit but boat rentals and guide services are available at the Outdoor Sportsman’s Lodge.

Vandalia Lake

One of Fayette County’s gems, this 660acre lake caters to fishing, swimming, paddling, and watersports. Its diverse depth and structure make it a hotspot for anglers of all skill levels.

Lakes of Centralia

Lake Centralia

Spanning 412 acres, Lake Centralia is a hub for fishing, boating, and watersports. With no restrictions on boat types or motor sizes, it’s a versatile destination surrounded by scenic parkland.

Raccoon Lake

This 970-acre lake is perfect for anglers and boaters alike. A 5-mph speed limit ensures calm waters for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and small sailboats. An ADAcompliant fishing dock makes this lake accessible to all.

Silver Lake Highland

Whether you’re casting a line, gliding on a kayak, paddling a canoe, or balancing on a paddleboard, Silver Lake offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. This scenic park and lake are perfect for visitors of all interests, providing a tranquil escape and activities for everyone to enjoy.

Mill Creek Lake Marshall

Surrounded by lush landscapes, this 811-acre lake is ideal for fishing and paddling. Boating is limited to kayaks, canoes, and small electric trolling boats, ensuring a peaceful visit.

Lake Mattoon

Mattoon

Spanning 1,050 acres, Lake Mattoon provides ample space for watersports like tubing and water skiing, along with quiet coves for fishing. With options for both motorized and non-motorized boats, it’s a versatile destination.

Lake Charleston

Charleston

Welcoming boats of all sizes, Lake Charleston offers a variety of activities, from water skiing to kayaking. Its accessible boat ramps and piers make it easy to enjoy this stunning lake in Charleston

Twin Lakes in Paris

West Twin Lake

Built in 1895 as a reservoir, this lake includes 75 acres of water and 4.5 miles of shoreline. This lake is perfect for paddle boats and shore fishing with the opportunity to catch a 6 pound bass!

East Twin Lake

Expanding to the east in 1916, this lake boasts 165 acres and 8 miles of shoreline. Bass and catfish reign supreme in this lake but you can expect to also find Saugeye and Crappie.

Robeson Hills Nature Preserve

Lawrenceville

Robeson Hills Nature Preserve in Lawrenceville is a 120-acre preserve near the Wabash River, is a remarkable remnant of mesic upland forest, featuring narrow ridges, steep slopes, and deep ravines. Managed by Vincennes University as part of a 545-acre outdoor education site, it boasts diverse habitats and a beech-maple forest atop deep loess deposit. Visitors can explore its rich biodiversity, including tulip trees, oaks, and abundant wildflowers, while also discovering its historical significance, with archaeological features like shell middens from an Archaic Indian culture.

Fults Hill Prairie State Natural Area

Chester

With nearly 1,000 acres of land to explore, the Fults Hill Prairie Nature Preserve is one of the most stunning areas of natural beauty in the state of Illinois. The preserve’s trails provide outdoors lovers with an unrivaled look into the native landscapes that once lined the vast bluffs of the Mississippi River. Salt Lick Point

Featuring towering bluffs and an abandoned quarry, Salt Lick Point in Monroe County showcases the beauty of the Mississippi River’s geological impact perfectly. Visitors can follow the marked trail as they clamber up the bluffs, where they will be welcomed by some of the most scenic views in all of Downstate. Steep grades and uneven trails stand between the bottom and top of the trail, but once the views are well worth the ascent!

Knobeloch Woods Nature Preserve

Freeburg

Explore the enchanting landscapes of Knobeloch Woods Nature Preserve in Freeburg, where nature thrives in harmony. This network of trails winds through beautiful woodlands, providing a perfect setting for outdoor adventures and quiet reflection.

Piney Creek Ravine Natural Area

Purchased by the state in the 1970s to protect the rare plant species that call this area home, Piney Creek Ravine Natural Area in Campbell Hill offers hikers of all skill levels a great chance to view the unique natural landscapes of the area. Dense woods ensure that hikers stay cool in the summer while providing cover from the harsh elements at other times of the year. When you visit, be on the lookout for short-leaf pine trees in the area, as this is one of the few places where they grow naturally in Illinois as well as over 200 petroglyphs dating back to A.D. 500.

Stemler Cave Woods Nature Preserve offers a network of trails that cater to both casual walkers and avid hikers. This preserve offers a glimpse into the area’s geological history while providing ample opportunities for hiking and exploration. Birdwatching, wildlife photography, and hiking are among the most popular activities at Stemler Woods.

Illinois Caverns

4369 G Rd, Waterloo, IL

Illinois Caverns State Natural Area offers adventurous visitors a one-of-a-kind underground hiking experience. Located in Waterloo, this 6-mile network of passages showcases astonishing natural formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and flowing streams, all kept at a constant 58°F. Unlike commercialized caves, Illinois Caverns provides an authentic spelunking adventure, requiring visitors to bring three sources of battery-powered lighting, wear a hard hat or helmet, rubber boots, and ensure their party includes at least four people with one adult for every minor. Visitors must also sign a waiver at the on-site IDNR office before entering the cave. With a mix of easy walk-through areas and more challenging side passages, Illinois Caverns promises an unforgettable subterranean journey for both novice cavers and seasoned explorers.

Metro-East Levee Trail

Cahokia

The Metro-East Levee Trail in Cahokia delivers breathtaking views from atop the Mississippi River flood control system. Spanning 7.2 miles, this paved trail offers casual and experienced riders an unforgettable experience with vistas of the St. Louis skyline and the Mississippi River. Note, this trail’s surface is very rough and suited only for hiking. Biking is allowed but is extremely challenging.

Illinois Central Railroad Riverwalk

Vandalia

Established in 2011, the Illinois Central Railroad Riverwalk in Vandalia combines nature and history. This scenic unpaved nature trail is just under one mile in total length and leads visitors to the Kaskaskia River. Along the trail there are several “Did You Know” signs that tell the history of the Illinois Central Railroad.

Goshen Bike Trail

O’Fallon

The Goshen Bike Trail in O’Fallon winds through St. Clair County, offering a mix of urban and natural settings. This well-maintained paved trail is perfect for leisurely rides or commuting while showcasing the charm of the area.

MetroBikeLink Trail

St. Clair County

The MetroBikeLink Trail in St. Clair County runs parallel to the MetroLink Red Line for 14 miles. It offers a unique rail-with-trail experience through Clinton County. It’s mostly flat terrain, scenic bridges, and convenient connections to MetroLink stations make it an excellent choice for both recreational riders and commuters.

Belleville’s Richland Creek Greenway Trail

Cyclists can enjoy art and nature on Belleville’s Richland Creek Greenway Trail, which combines modern sculptures with a fully paved path. This two-mile stretch connects to the MetroBikeLink system, creating endless opportunities for extended rides across the St. Louis metro region.
