Past the Podium

Every four years, nations from around the world gather to celebrate the spirit of competition, pushing the boundaries of human potential at the Summer Olympics. From July 26th to August 11th, sports enthusiasts will have the opportunity to rally behind the United States as they compete in the prestigious Olympic Games in Paris.

We had the honor of chatting with Dawn Harper-Nelson, a name synonymous with speed, grace, and resilience. Hailing from East St. Louis, Dawn emerged as a track and field sensation, captivating the world with her remarkable talent and unwavering dedication. With two Olympic medals to her name, Dawn’s illustrious career exemplifies the pursuit of excellence and the triumph of the human spirit against all odds. Beyond her athletic prowess, Dawn is celebrated for her humility, leadership, and commitment to empowering the next generation of athletes. As we delve into Dawn’s story, we discover not only a remarkable athlete but also why she calls Downstate Illinois home.

As a young athlete, Dawn drew inspiration from hometown hero Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Her influence fueled Dawn’s own aspirations, and she discovered her passion for track and field at the age of 12. Dawn loved everything about running and said, “It wasn’t just the running part, it was the wind on my face, the way it felt when I was pumping my arms, my feet hitting the track. I just absolutely fell in love.” At age 14, her coach pulled Dawn aside and said, “I think with your speed and your intelligence you could be the best hurdler in the world.”

In her freshman year of high school, Dawn competed for the coveted Illinois state championship title. Not only did she outpace a seasoned senior who held the state record, but she also shattered

2 2024 Spring/Summer Tourism Times

the record herself. Though her future was looking bright, she faced many obstacles like a major knee injury in high school, caused by someone tripping her with a tennis net. However, that did not slow her down.

Determined to go pro and pursue her dreams, she earned a full ride to UCLA. One of the defining moments of Dawn’s career came during the Olympic trials, where she said to herself, “Look Dawn, you have to keep your head down and go for it.” She crossed the finish line and made the Olympic team by .007 seconds. When she was looking into the crowd celebrating her dreams coming true, she recognized the familiar face of her high school friend and middle school track rival, her now husband, Alonzo Nelson. It was a reminder of the support she had from her roots in East St. Louis.

It was then time to head to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Despite being told that first-time Olympians rarely secure medals, Dawn remained determined. Drawing strength from her coach’s wisdom and her unwavering support, she entered the arena with a singular focus: to represent herself and her family with pride. As the race unfolded, in a breathtaking finish, she emerged victorious. Reflecting on her Olympic experiences, Dawn recalls the overwhelming joy of standing atop the podium with a gold medal draped around her neck, representing her country.

The next Olympic games took place in London and Dawn was ready to compete again. This time Dawn took home a silver medal. When asked about winning silver, Dawn said, “The way that I see this silver medal is no less than my gold. My goal was to go to the London Olympics, be in the best shape of my life, put it all out there, and give the people a good show, and that is absolutely what I did.”

Away from the track, Dawn enjoys the simple pleasures of life in Downstate Illinois. From

practicing her swing at DP Golf Indoors in O’Fallon, Dawn cherishes the warmth and camaraderie of her community. Dawn told us, “I first met the owner, Dan Polites, because I was entered into a celebrity golf tournament and had only ever been miniature golfing. I needed a ton of help. He told me he owned a golfing range and generously said I could come and practice whenever I wanted. If my husband could, he would change our address to DP Golf Indoors. It’s just a nice place to kick back play golf and enjoy some good conversation.” And when it comes to satisfying her cravings, Shooter’s in O’Fallon and Drake’s in Shiloh are among her favorite spots for delicious eats. When asked what Downstate Illinois meant to her, Dawn said, “This area means community, growth, family, and a thriving life. I say this description because I have seen generations of my family, and my friends grow here. I have experienced it myself. There are so many places I plan to explore and can’t wait to feel like a kid again in my own backyard.”

For Dawn, Downstate Illinois symbolizes more than just a geographical location; it represents a place where dreams take root and resilience flourishes—a sentiment she hopes to share with others through her podcast “The Real Nelson” and social media series about her Olympic career called, “Do or Die”.

As Dawn looks ahead to the upcoming Paris Olympics, where she’ll be broadcasting, she remains deeply connected to the sport that shaped her life. However, beyond her athletic achievements, Dawn treasures her roles as a wife, mother, and friend, cherishing the connections she has forged with her community. Her journey, from athlete to mentor, exemplifies the power of perseverance and the enduring spirit of a champion. And as she continues to inspire others with her story, Dawn Harper-Nelson stands as a testament to the transformative power of sport and the strength of the human spirit.

Brewing Brilliance

Who doesn’t love starting the morning with a good cup of coffee? We sure do! Last October we decided to promote coffee shops for our bracket challenge to coincide with the 2nd annual Southern Illinois Coffee Trail. We let the community decide what businesses would be featured on the bracket by asking the public to nominate their favorite spots to grab a cup of coffee. Since we only featured brick-and-mortar businesses on the Southern Illinois Coffee Trail, we wanted to allow any type of coffee establishment to be nominated for the bracket challenge. The Coffee Bracket was a huge hit and brought in over 20,000 votes. The finale came down to two coffee trailers: The Coffee Pot located in Freeburg and Monroe County, and Stagecoach Coffee in Paris.

The winner of the coffee bracket, with 3.7k votes, was The Coffee Pot. It is owned by Carrie Bauer, who at the time of winning, had only been in business for 11 months! They have a full-time coffee truck that you can always find parked at 105 N. State Street, in Freeburg, as well as another mobile trailer that changes locations in Monroe and St. Clair County. If you have never been to The Coffee Pot, you’ll want to add them to the top of your list. Their menu is always changing, with additions that include seasonal offerings and innovative new flavor combinations. When talking with their baristas, they said they love having the creative freedom to experiment with creating drinks that are sure to please any palette. If coffee is not your jam, don’t worry, they also have lotus plant-based energy tea drinks. If you can’t decide on what to get, you can order a double cup, with any two drink combinations. And if you really need a caffeine kick, they offer a 32 oz.

Follow @thecoffeepotmobilecafe on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date on their business – they have some exciting things in the works!

Stagecoach Coffee

The runner-up, with 3.6k votes, was Stagecoach Coffee in Paris. The owner Corby Dayton started Stagecoach Coffee at the end of April 2021. You can find them throughout Paris and its surrounding cities. You can’t go wrong with their affordable and delicious drinks!

Follow them on Facebook @stagecoachcoffeellc to see where they will be headed next.

ROPES ropes

26 2024 Spring/Summer Tourism Times

The Carlyle Sailing Association (CSA) is a familyfriendly, not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to the sport of sailing. Throughout the year they host a myriad of nautical events, races, regattas, and sailing lessons. Their harbor is nestled on the shores of Carlyle Lake in Clinton County. Sprawling approximately 26,000 acres, eight miles long, and three miles wide, Carlyle Lake is the largest man-made lake in the State of Illinois. CSA’s property neighbors the scenic Eldon Hazlet State Park which offers a campground, wildlife, and nature trails. To learn more about the Carlyle Sailing Association, or to sign up for a class, visit: csa-sailing.org

If you are wondering what the adult sailing seminar is like, then look no further! Last year, we were fortunate enough to attend their 3-day course. They provide you with all the necessary resources to quickly gain your sea legs. The seminar is a mix of both classroom and on-the-water learning, and all experience levels are encouraged to sign up!

Before the class begins, you will choose which type of boat you want to learn to sail on (Monohull - Flying Scots, Cabin Boat - San Juan 21s, or Catamaran - Hobie 18s). If you are unsure of which one would be best for you, the class director will call you a few weeks before to help you decide, and go over any questions you may have.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by their friendly staff and make your way to your assigned seat. There you will find a U.S. Sailing reference textbook with the potential to earn the Little Red Book. Make sure to arrive early each day, as a hearty breakfast is provided to keep you fueled up for a long day on the open water. Class begins with quick introductions from instructors and then some basic sailing terminology and water safety rules. From there, you will be educated on a variety of subjects like how to properly set up a sailboat, sailing directions, sailing upwind and downwind, capsize recovery, overboard recovery, weather patterns, knots and lines, and so much more. You will be given a new instructor and crew each day to help you gain confidence with others on the water. Before you begin sailing, you watch a demonstration of how to set up the sailboat. Pay close attention to this step because each day you will set up your own to familiarize yourself with the process. Lunch is provided each day, which you won’t want to miss, because the food is delicious! This break is also a great time to squeeze in some practice on how to tie knots. Their overall goal is to get you out on the water as much as possible to ensure you get the most out of the experience. At the end of each day, you will bring your sailboat in and return it exactly how you found it. You will also receive a written evaluation from your instructor so that you can see how you are progressing each day.

This year’s adult sailing seminars are available for ages 18 and up and take place May 30th-June 1st and August 29th-31st. The cost for non-members to join the class is $395. They also have a Junior Sailing Camp for ages 10-16 on June 9th14th and a Kinder Sail Camp for ages 6-9 on July 26th-28th. Sailing Seminars fill up fast, so be sure to register early!
