Hey VSAA! Welcome to this school year’s final issue of Illustrate Magazine, and my final issue as Editor! I have had a wonderful time this year editing the magazine, and it has been a privilege to see all of the art you’ve created this year. However, I am looking for somebody who can take over the magazine next year! I am looking for anyone who will be a junior or senior next school year. There is no requirement of graphic design experience, I didn’t have any when I started. If you are curios at all or have any questions, please contact me! You can email me at sophoakl@gmail.com, or if you are more comfortable you may DM me on my instagram account @soap.oakley. Thank you for taking the time to submit to the magazine if you have, and thank you for checking it out and supporting your peers!

ASHLEY JONES Why did you do it? - I was given the prompt “Downtown Vancouver” and this sculpture was the first thing I was reminded of. I chose the colors because of our trees and sky.

RIVER ALMSTED Grade 9, Graphic Design What did you do? - I based these designs on three of my characters from around seventh grade. The old designs were all non-humanoid, so it was interesting to try and adapt them into a more human form. Why did you do it? - I did it to stretch my limits as a character designer, as well as to experiment with colored lineart. It was really fun to try and add some personality to them via poses and expressions.

ANDREW MILLER Grade 12, AP Studio Art How did you do it? - I started with a sketch on watercolor paper and then without ink in most of the pieces I used the sketch as the skeleton of the painting and with many layers of watercolor finished the pieces. For The Druid I additionally used prismacolor pencils to add extra detailed and flesh out the owlbear more effectively. Why did you do it? - My portfolio concentration is fantasy adventure, anything from a party of adventurers or a vast mountaneous landscape. These pieces are a part of that focus.

Character Concept

MIA LEWIS

Grade 6

What did you do? - I decided to draw a character concept for a story I am working on. It is of one of the main characters named Maylin. Why did you do it? - To get a better picture in my head while thinking of the character. Also because I wanted to get better at drawing different positions when I draw people, so this was a great way for me to work on that.
