Happy Valentine’s Day VSAA! Thank you so much for viewing the eigth issue of Illustrate Magazine! I’ve had a lot of fun editing this issue for you guys, and every single piece of art that is in this issue is amazing, so thank you for submitting! I’ve run into a few issues with people not knowing where to submit, so i’ll hopefully clear it all up right now. You can find submission links on Abby Harris’ website, Crystal Zeller’s website, in your email, and in the bio of Illustrate Magazine’s new instagram account. I’m playing around with the idea of creating a website for you guys to make it easy to view the magazine and find the link to submit, so look forward to that! Enjoy the magazine! - Sophie Oakley, Editor 5

What did you do? - Both of these pieces are inspired by some of my favorite books: “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, and “Call Me By Your Name” by Andre Aciman. I love books almost as much as I love art, so I frequently create drawings/paintings of my favorite characters. These are some of my most recent favorites. How did you do it? - For “Pelion”, I did the lines in paper with pen and ink, then scanned it into Photoshop for coloring. “Ari and Dante” is watercolor and acrylic on watercolor paper. “Elio” is oil on canvas.

What did you do? - I created a batch of songs, then paired it with artwork that represented the music. For the artwork, I brought out what was in my head as I sung each song. Last Night is about a memory from a night before, and the artwork is almost illusion-y with a 3D effect on the background words paired with a nostalgic looking polaroid picturing me crossing a street. It’s all very aesthetic and I wanted the artwork to be just as pretty as the music is. How did you do it? - I first listened to my songs. I drew inspiration from what was flowing in my head. Images whirled around and eventually I had an idea of what I wanted featured. I used Photoshop and just went at it. Why did you do it? - Each song is a project inspired by current emotions; it was all written down in-the-moment, and each lyric represents a memory or a feeling. I wanted to put myself into a visual artist’s position by going from scratch and creating something out of almost nothing. I needed something to visualize each song and to bring a picture to them so that when other people listened to my music, they would see what I had saw while creating it.
