PAPI holds midyear confab, executive session for editors, publishers MAKATI CITY - The Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI) will hold its 2010 Midyear Conference and Executive Session of Editors and Publishers on June 23-24, this year at the Makati Sports Club, this city.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato C. Corono and President Gloria Arroyo will be the keynote speaker and the guest of honor in the two-day event to be participated in by publishers, editors, reporters, broadcasters and other personalities engaged in mass communication.

Also invited are Comelec Chairman Jose R. Melo who will give an assessment of the country’s first automated elections; Dean Luis V. Teodoro, Deputy Executive Director, Center for Media Freedom and Democracy, who will talk on Media’s role in new governance; and Philippine Daily Inquirer Publisher Isagani Yambot who will speak on the ethical dimensions of journalism and propaganda.

A fellowship dinner will be hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Juan Dayang in the evening of June 24.

The media conference and executive session for publishers and editors is set every June of the year.#

Again, though, these policies should not be merely about “consolidating the Philippines’ share of the [overseas job] market over which it has little real control”.

Something also is essential for the incoming president to do, Achacoso said: a better approach to address the lack of programs to create jobs domestically.

“Labor migration as the solution to the Philippines’ economic problem is erroneous, and addresses only one aspect of the [domestic employment] problem.”

Ang noted that the Aquino administration has the wherewithal to hit the diasporic dividend.

“He [Aquino] can help turn remittances into concrete investments.”

Preventing overseas movement of workers is unacceptable, yet the Philippine government should not rely on demand-driven job markets abroad to sustain the economy, Achacoso and Ang said.#
